To hear White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan tell it, it wasn't all that easy piecing together information coming out of the Armstrong Ranch in Texas on Saturday night after Vice President Dick Cheney inadvertently sprayed a hunting companion with bird-shot from his .28-guage shotgun.

McClellan himself wasn't aware of all the details until Sunday morning, he said today, during the second round of contentious briefings on the shooting in the White House press briefing room.

McClellan later updated this briefing with some details about what the president knew, and when he knew it.

Q: So when did the president definitively know that the Vice President had shot somebody?

McClellan: "Chief of Staff Andy Card called the president around 7:30pm EST to inform him that there was a hunting accident. He did not know the vice president was involved at that time.

"Subsequent to the call, Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove spoke with Mrs. Armstrong. He then called the president shortly before 8:00pm EST to update him and let him know the vice president had accidentally shot Mr. Whittington.

Early stories I read in other media asserted that local police were refused access to the shooter, Vice Resident Cheney, by the Secret Service. If true does this amount to obstruction of justice?

THAT IS TOTALLY UNFAIR to say that Whittington was "sprayed." It's just another example of the Liberal Media Bias at work at the Chicago Tribune.

He was actually blasted.

You would spray one with a machine gun.

It is hard to believe that someone would call the White House to let them know that someone had been shot in a hunting accident and not let them know who had been shot or by whom. It doesn't make any sense. I'm trying to imagine how the first call would have gone:

"Hello. This is the White House."

"Yes. Someone has been shot in a hunting accident."

"Okay. Wait a couple of hours and call us back with more details."

"Roger. Out."

It just goes to show that Dick Cheney can't handle a shot gun, just like he can't handle classified information.

He is a bumbling fool whose mishaps result in peppering faces and outing CIA agents.

The walks up from behind him, Cheney turns and fires and doesn't see the orange hat or vest. Where was the secret service? And why did Whittington go pick up a bird the dogs neglected to retrieve? Probably the oldest guy in the group and he walks off to pick up a bird? Try again. The stories are changing so quickly that the truth hasn't come out yet. Whittington had a heart irregularity that some are now calling a heart attack but they are leaving the bucksot in place. There's more to this story than we'll ever know.

After 22 hours it makes you wonder. What else are they hiding?

It sounds Mr. Whittington is fighting for his life in the ICU. I hope Mr. Cheney accepts responsibility for his actions. Texas Penal Code Title 5 Chapter 19 defines manslaughter as, "A person commits an offense if he recklessly causes the death of another person." I cannot believe I just read a CNN article that stated "Authorities have cleared Cheney of wrong doing.." Let me guess the "authorities" work in the White House? What could be more reckless than shooting someone? How can the shooter already be judged?

There is an ominous side to the story that needs to be addressed. The victim had a heart attack apparently because of the so-called minor gunshot wound in which he was shot in the head and upper torso and the pellets are floating around his body. I don't see how anyone shot like that could ever be said to have minor injuries. The fact that local authorities were initially not informed nor allowed to interview Cheney at least gives the impression he is hiding from possible criminal charges as "negligent use of a firearm" can be a crime. The fact the proper authorities were not told or allowed to investigate is troubling.

Amazing...if someone slipped on a wet floor in the White House you would all scream "Conspiracy!" Hunting accidents like this happen all the time. So much so that in Texas they need not file a police report, only a report with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (or whatever it is officially called). I myself was almost shot in the face in such a circumstance, by my own brother who followed his target a bit too far. Fortunately for me I screamed and he stopped. But I was also about 15 yards away from him. Whittington was 30 yards by the official report. And the reason the White House was alerted was not because it was just a hunting accident- it was a hunting accident with the VP's hunting party. You people need to stop wasting so much time with conspiracy theories and live life a little. But if not, here's one for you. Please, someone, anyone, tell me why between 1993 and 2000 our country was hit by al Qaeda on 5 different occasions, and Bill Clinton was no closer to capturing bin Laden than GW Bush? Not to excuse Bush, but he only had about 8 months to do what Clinton failed miserably to do in 7 years! The conspiracy here is why Clinton/Gore get free passes and get to continue to berate the current administration when their record is far worse (see Rwanda)! My point is to not defend Bush, because 9/11 is a result of the failures of multiple people. You will continue to allow this to happen if you do not hold our leaders accountable regardless of party affiliation! Clinton/Gore- GUILTY! Bush/Cheney- GUILTY! All Senators and Congressmen who voted to give Bush authorization to invade Iraq but later claimed ignorance of his true intentions- GUILTY! WAKE UP, PEOPLE! Do not let your hatred of one person/party blind you to shortcomings of everyone else who has blood on their hands!

Why did Armstrong (per articles I read) initially refuse to identify Hunter #3 in the group, when, in fact that hunter was later identified as the U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland. I doubt most of us have a clue who Pamela Willeford (U.S. Ambassador) is. Was Mrs. Willeford interviewed by local law enforcement? After all, Willeford would have been alongside Cheney, unlike Armstrong who was reported as being several yards away. And if not, why not? Was Mrs. Willeford issued a citation for failing to have a $7 license to hunt quail. After all, Whittinton and Cheney were cited. If not, why not? No mention of this anywhere. Willeford almost becomes a person of NO interest. Why?
