The first reviews of the vice president's hunting accident are starting to come in, and they start with a disdain for hunting.

"Dick Cheney just seems to keep topping himself on the hunting front.,'' Wayne Pacelle, president of The Humane Society of the United States, said Sunday evening.

“Then, he went on an exclusive private shooting spree in Pennsylvania and shot dozens, perhaps hundreds, of stocked pheasants at a drive-thru canned hunting operation – where the pen-raised birds were treated as nothing more than living targets, Pacelle said.

"Now, he’s shot a hunting companion in his latest hunting venture,'' he said. "We don’t quite understand his obsession with shooting animals, and we’d advise him to pursue a less violent form of relaxation and get on with the important business of leading the country.”

The Humane Society supports the protection of all animals, including hunting companions.

Dick should have taken Scooter hunting while he still could.

Can you really blame Cheney? Pheasants haven't organized an insurgency and they rarely shoot back...

I'm not surprised that Vice President Cheney shot his hunting companion. If you walk like a man and you talk like a man, you must be a duck. It's Bush Administration 101.

Mark Silva leaves out a salient fact from his article--that Wayne Pacelle, the person he quotes for a first reaction, is a Democrat Party activist who in the last two election cycles contributed at least $3,250 to Democrat candidates, including $1,000 to John Kerry, Bush's 2004 Democrat opponent. Political reporters have a duty to inform the public of the political affiliations of the people they quote, and in his haste to inject an anti-Cheney quote Mr. Silva ignores that duty.

I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than get in a car with Ted Kennedy...

The tally so far...
Ted Kennedy and Oldsmobile: 1 dead
Cheney and shotgun: 0

"“Then, he went on an exclusive private shooting spree in Pennsylvania and shot dozens, perhaps hundreds, of stocked pheasants..."

And then again, maybe he shot ONE BILLION!!

Cheney always shoots himself in the foot, why not someone else for a change?

While this is an amusing story (sort of), I think its interesting that they were able to bury it until after the Sunday morning shows, were able to get everyone lock-step on the story, and somehow blamed the victim for the occurance. They initially reported that it was a minor mishap (something like - his ego was bruised more than he was) even though he had to be airlifted to a major hospital because the local facility couldn't treat him.

The beat goes on.

Regarding Dick Cheney shooting his companion during a hunting trip. Its just consistent with everything the Bush-Cheney administration does: Ready! Fire! Aim!

Did anyone else notice in the coverage of the hunting accident that the victim was treated by medical personell traveling with the Vice President. So I guess we pay Secret Service AND a medical team to travel with teh Vice President in case he has heart trouble or accidentally shoots someone!

Wayne Pacelle is starting to sound like a spokeperson for PETA. Is Pacelle protecting a flying bird or voicing a distain for hunting. A bird that is harvested and put on the table for consumption is still food, no matter if it comes from the field or the processing plant. Is the position of The Humane Society a no harvest policy now?

Sometimes, you politically minded (politically correct minded) people are so inventive, slick, sly and witty, I'm just not sure how to live life other than how you think I should. Seriously. Ready, fire, aim? Spend less time being witty, and more time solving the problems you claim we have and perhaps you would be heard. If the problems are tossed aside in the light of 'jokes' such as reaady, fire aim...then perhaps the problems aren't so big after all.

This is barely a newsworthy article. Why the need for a comment section???

I thought that hunting an animal meant giving that animal a chance to get away from becoming food on the table. Cheney doesn't hunt, he kills, putting the poor animal in a firing squad and shooting and then he doesn't even see his target!!

Is Dick Cheney the first vice president to shoot someone since Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton?

G. Lucas, Pacelle used to be Executive Director of Fund for Animals. One of his quotes: "We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding." Draw any conclusions you'd like. :-)

Well, isn't this typical. A real macho man like Cheney who doesn't wince at the idea of someone else being tortured, who had "other priorities" when it was time to strap on the ammo and serve his country, goes "hunting" on a farm with caged birds who are released in order for paper mache rambos to shoot them down, like fish in a barrel, or chained prisoners at Abu Ghraib. Cheney is an embarrassment to the human race.

Humane Society or PETA? Birds of a feather flock together. Pun intended.

OK folks, let's not let the political venom spew any more than has or will contune this evening on the late night talk shows. This was a hunting accident - no more, no less. Accidents happen, even with the best of hunters. Unfortunately, this involved VP Cheney and because of that, Bush/Cheney haters will load their powder and let fly - this is the status of politics in America - any opportunity to show hate, will happen.

SSSHHHHHHhhhhhhhh, this really didn't happen , lets down play this and do nothing about it. I thought we had laws to keep guns out of the hands of nuts, like this. Sure it was a accident , but haven't we as a nation endured enough accidents with this administraions shoot from the hip mentality . With good common sense and good planning, accidents are far and few between!! As a Nation at war how can a president take a 5-week vataction at his ranch during the summer and the VP take hunting trips , There is a time for work and a time for play, I just wish they would get to work . Sick of the talk , they should try walking there talk . Get tough on themselves , not just the terrorists!!

In spite of this unfortunate occurrance involving the vice president, in many states incidents of injuries stemming from hunting are at all time lows.

Just like the birds for chicken nuggets at McDonalds, these birds were created for consumption by humans. At least they got to fly for a brief moment. PETA member (People Eating Tasty Animals)

So he shot a lawyer. No problem!

Why have I been hearing that the victim is responsible? Aren't there hunting regs that require that all in the group must be accounted before firing a shotgun? Nobody in this administration is accountable for anything it seems.

We should be clear: it's not hunting when Cheney kills farm-raised animals in a canned hunt. If the birds are eaten, I have no particular moral problem with this practice, but it's still not hunting and it's still not sporting -- it's slaughter.

"Comments are not posted immediately. We review them first in an effort to remove foul language, commercial messages, irrelevancies and unfair attacks. Thank you for your patience. "

So much for editorial discression. The Pacelle quote “Then, he went on an exclusive private shooting spree in Pennsylvania and shot dozens, perhaps hundreds, of stocked pheasants at a drive-thru canned hunting operation – where the pen-raised birds were treated as nothing more than living targets, Pacelle said.["] is a blatantly unfair attack, obviously hyperbolic, and did not even have a closing quote.

Having been in Iraq recently Cheney thought this dude was and insurgent, a WMD, or IED. Eye exam recommended.

Scott McCellelan's brave attempt to try to explain the inexplicable delay between the time the White House learned of the accident and its actually being reported to the Corpus Christi press by Mrs. Armstrong is another classic for this administration. They seem to believe if you just ignore mistakes, they might just go away. By attempting to control the universe, they mismanage even the most routine and human events. (Assuming it was truly an accident.) I'll bet Karl Rove is now second guessing his decision to try to bury this one.

lieutenant columbo,

how long did it take ted kennedy to call for

help, with mary jo at the bottom of the lake?

Cheney should get an award from the NRA for demonstrating why Americans should have the right to carry assault weapons. Buckshot just doesn't get the job done.

What would have happened if the shoe were on the other foot and Huntington shot Cheney?

We may soon read that quick-triggered Dick was operating on "bad intelligence" that Harry was carrying WMDs or that he had sold his shares of Halliburton. Is there a statute that rebids the VP from hunting with the Commander in Chief?

The tally so far...
Laura Bush & car= 1 dead boyfriend
Ted Kennedy and Oldsmobile= 1 dead
Cheney and shotgun: 0

To me both ends of the reaction are extreme. However, one things indisputable. He was not a careful hunter, was reckless in his judgement of when to shoot. History will record whether his inputs on foreign policy were of similar nature.

hey g. lucas, maybe the position of the humane society is 'no kill without consumption'. i'm sure the vp and his esteemed party picked up all the birds, picked out all the shot, dressed the birds and prepared them. sure they did..... and wmd's are calling you from crawford texas.

We're missing the larger picture here:

Whether you are bombing people or shooting animals, these are acts of violence and terroism. Although, many do not consider shooting or slaughtering animals as acts of violence or terrorism -- perhaps it's time we did!

This planet will never know peace as long as a person will wield a weapon against another living being.

I am a firearm owner and also hunt pheasant. I do not shoot anything I don't intend to eat(as in hunting partners, even if their lawyers). I also disagree with Wayne Pacelle and the other groups out there that care more about the rights of a dumb bird than the rights of people. I just wish Cheney takes the next hunting trip with Bush and they accidentally shoot each other.

The Gang that can't shoot straight, does it again! Maybe a song, "Cheney's got a gun", to the tune of "Jaime's got a gun".

Hey, we've found the missing weapon of mass destruction. No wonder Dubya doesn't let him hangout in Crawford. Sure puts new meaning on Charleton Heston's famous NRA retort, "from my cold dead hands.

A delay of even a few hours ia all that is required for a drunk to sober up. This might not be relevant except for the fact that Cheney is the only vice-president elected with a criminal record, and both convictions for drunk driving.

The moral of the story; Walk loudly and have a flack jacket......

I am not adverse to hunting, but I do have a problem with individuals who kill large numbers of animals in a single event, apparently for the sheer pleasure of it.

On the "hunting" trip to PA to harvest the pheasants, it struck me that it would have been cheaper to release chickens and turkeys to be the hunting targets. On second thought, that would have seemed unsportsman-like because these are not the wild "game" species that the pheasants were and they would have had little inclination to get away.

Maybe if Cheney hadn't had "other priorities" during Vietnam (multiple deferrments), he would know how to handle his weapon better...

Great!

In response to the "dumb bird" comment: if the earth is destroyed, it will be pretty certain that it won't be because of the greed, shortsightedness or willful violence of any of its avian residents. God created birds to be birds, and they are very good at being what God intended them to be, which is more than I can say for the human race.
