House Speaker Dennis Hastert was released from Bethesda Naval Hospital at 2 pm Eastern time on Monday after four days of treatment for a leg infection, said press secretary Ron Bonjean.
"He's doing well," Bonjean said. "He's healthy and over this."
The 64-year-old Illinois Republican was admitted to the military hospital on Thursday with a case of cellulitis, a skin infection, on his lower left leg and was treated with intravenous antibiotics, Bonjean said.
Hastert was expected to be back at work in his office by late afternoon and to perform his normal duties this week as Congress meets.
"The staff spent the weekend visiting him, bringing work to him. He spent his time reading, working and bored--because he's used to campaigning and doing things," Bonjean said.
Hastert has diabetes, which can lead to poor blood circulation in the extremities. The disease can cause cellulitis to spread more rapidly and consequently doctors frequently treat cellulitis aggressively in diabetics.

I see the editorial staff is bending over backwards to give Hastert free press coverage with the up-coming election in November. How many columns have I seen now in the Swamp about Hastert’s skin problems? I think at least 5, and out of those columns I don’t think I’ve read more than 3 responses. This only shows that the Tribune is and always will be leaning more right than some of the bloggers here would want anyone to believe. It also seems to be a good indicator of how many votes Hastert is likely to get in November.
