Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia has served six terms in Congress, but one brash encounter with a U.S. Capitol Police officer may have cost the Atlanta-area Democrat her seat in the House.

Election returns from the 4th Congressional District show that Hank Johnson, a former DeKalb County commissioner, has easily unseated McKinney in a runoff today. From the first reporting of ballots tonight, Johnson was claiming about 75 percent of the vote in a runoff for the party's nomination. His lead tapered off, but he ultimately carried the contest with 59 percent of the vote.

McKinney, who had apologized to the House for her run-in with a Capitol Police officer who hadn't recognized her when she was entering the Capitol in March, emerged from her party's three-way primary last month with less than half the vote, leading to today's runoff with Johnson.

McKinney also was known for conspiracy theories that the Bush administration had forewarnings about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Attorney Johnson carried 59 percent of the vote, surpassing McKinney by more than 11,000 votes.

Kudos to my beltway blogging colleagues for great and timely election blogging tonight.
Tell Tackett to give you all the rest of the week off.

I knew there had to be something to blame...She now blames the electronic voting machines. I can understand Afro-americans wanting a black canidate that would have their intrests in mind...but there are so many better choices than someone who is an ambarrassment.

Good job election bloggers. It's good to see Zorn in the Swamp. I wonder if the Capitol police get to escort Cynthia McKinney out of her office one last time.

Glad to see McKinney gone, she is an embarrassment. And, Bill, I apologize for the comment I made in the post about Indiana tea leaves. I misread what you wrote. Hope you see this.

It's great to see that the voters in the 4th district have chosen a well spoken voice of moderation over the radical McKinney.

Contrast this to the election in Michigan, where R-Rep.Joe Schwarz, the incumbment, lost to wing nut Tim Walberg from the New Kids On The Block.

Walberg vowed to vote against pork, tax increases, and an anti abortion & homo plank.

Schwarz, the moderate was backed by Pres.Jack Daniels and Cuckoo McCain.

This shows what faction of the people are running this country.

Hey,Master's boy, real intellect on your part.

Now,if you wanna talk about embarrassing, let's talk about "Duke Cunningham" in the slammer.

Or,Tom"Bug Snatcher"Delay,on his way to the slammer.

Or,David Safavian,Top procurement official for neo nuts,on his way to the slammer.

Or,Claude Allen,Top domestic policy adviser to KKK Rove, convicted shoplifter, copped a plea to stay out of slammer.

Or,R-Bob Ney,soon to be convicted influence peddler,on his way to slammer.

No problem, John D. I saw it. Good to see you back in the Swamp. For any devoted McKinney watchers out there here's a great video of her "concession speech" claiming that an election she lost - to another democrat - was stolen... by 11,000 votes. She goes off on a nice tangent about electronic voting machines. It's really priceless. I guess we should just wait for the investigation into the nefarious electioneering of Hank Johnson (another democrat!).

Gosh, I'm going to miss Cynthia and her shenanigans. Not enough to wish she'd won her primary, no not that much. But it'll sure be quiet around here.

Sorry about the youtube mess up. It's actually Pink's "Dear Mr. President," the file changed on me. Here's the right link of the concession speech, scroll down to the bottom: http://hotair.com/archives/top-picks/2006/08/08/electionblogging-lieberman-vs-lamont/

Oh and Bill R., the people of her district did elect an African-American candidate who's better than her, Hank Johnson!

That was my point!

Bill..I know you didn't know this but right now I live in GA. I did know that Hank Johnson is african american. What I meant was ... the people have felt like Mckinney is the only voice(loud and obnoxious as it is) that could be heard and promote their fears and interests.

On the subject of Joe Schwarz, his voting record showed him to be a republican in name only and the voters of his district have chosen Tim Walberg, who they feel will better represent them in the general election. Same as with McKinney and Johnson.

Bill, the Prez. and the Prez wanna be both endosed a guy who was a Republican in name only.

You must be a fiction editor.
