U.S. Sen. Barack Obama stepped up to help Democratic 6th District Candidate Tammy Duckworth respond to ads from Republican opponent Peter Roskam attacking her position on illegal immigration.
Roskam’s new ad places Duckworth’s face next to U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and footage of people scaling a wall and states that she “supports Ted Kennedy’s plan to give amnesty to illegal aliens.”
It goes on to state that she would give illegal immigrants “welfare and social security benefits.”
“Peter Roskam says, ‘No amnesty, no handouts.’ He’s on our side,” the ad concludes.
The National Republican Congressional Committee also has hammered Duckworth on the issue in ads, calling her “wrong on immigration, wrong for Illinois.”
In the new Duckworth ads that began to air Wednesday, Obama says “illegal immigration is a serious problem and it demands honest answers.”
“That’s not what you’re getting in Peter Roskam’s TV ads,” Obama says. “The Tribune calls his attacks on Tammy Duckworth misleading. And I agree.”
Obama points out that he and Duckworth both support a plan sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), “which does not include amnesty or benefits for illegal immigrants.” Kennedy, a popular liberal whipping boy for Republicans, also signed on as one of nine co-sponsors of that bill, which passed the Senate with bipartisan support in May.
The McCain plan would add 12,000 agents to the border patrol force and allow illegal immigrants already in the United States to apply for citizenship after paying fines and back taxes, learning English and staying employed for a prescribed amount of time.
Roskam supports Republican legislation from the U.S. House of Representatives that would make illegal presence in the country a felony and require the building of fences along 700 miles of border.
“To solve immigration and other problems we need to change Washington,” Obama says in the ad. “And send serious leaders who speak the truth. Leaders like Tammy Duckworth.”
Roskam, a state senator from Wheaton, and Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran from Hoffman Estates, are in one of the most tightly contested congressional races in the country as they vie to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde in the west suburban 6th District.

Obama is only trying to "keep the faith". He does not have a plan or a grip on the immigration problem. When people break the law there needs to be serious consequences. Why don't the democrats just come out and say the same thing. You come into the country illegally you get sent home without the possibility of ever coming back legally again. Find the people who are hiring them and fine them $25,000.00 for each one there. Use that money to help pay for sending the illegals back. Over the border or across the ocean, I don't care where they are from. We must be a nation of laws that mean what we say.

Swiftboating a veteran show no class. Roskam voting record on veterans is very poor. And all call has gone out. Veterans from across this Country are coming in a convoy to man phones and walk for Tammy she gave both legs in defence of this Country. And Roskam runs an ad the Reynold the prevert protecter send him. NO WAY WILL LIES STAND.

The Republicans can only "try" to fight Tammy Duckworth on immigration, because they have nothing else to fight with.
Peter Roskam is a Bush loving, rubberstamp member of the "old boys" club of NeoCons who got us into this fine mess in Iraq.
Tammy served honorably in Iraq,in the war that George W. Bush, and his rubberstamp Republican led Congress lied about to get us involved in.
WMD's????
"We are not in the business of nation building"
George W.Bush in 2000
"We can not invade Iraq, because we do not have an exit strategy"
Dick Cheney in 1991
She lost both of her legs as a direct result of their lieing.
Now,she wants to run for Congress, and do something about the mistakes that have been made in Iraq, and what does her Republican challenger, the ambulance chasing,Tom Delay protege, silverspoon Republican lawyer Peter Roskam do ??
He swiftboats her of course,he trys to make her sound like she wants all illegals to walk across the border, and have citizenship when she never, ever said that.
If you vote for Peter Roskam, you might as well bring back Tom Delay, and his buddy Jack Abrammoff;Delay is one of Roskam's mentors.
The Republican leadership, and the W. administration want to send people off to fight, and die in Iraq, but they don't give a damn about them when they get back, and they especially don't want them to run for office, and expose their lies for the whole world to see.
VOTE FOR TAMMY DUCKWORTH:
She's an honorable American,we already have a couple of draftdodgers in the whitehouse.
I want someone like Tammy Duckworth who will expose these frauds, and their followers like Peter Roskam.
GO TAMMY!!!!

Dale Peters....Geeez,relax.Alot of men and women that served this country were maimed,my father was one of them in W.W.2,does that mean because he votes Republican,he is for "swiftboating" Tammy????
To set the record straight, the dems have a problem with hating the military,(Carter)...(Clinton)...and the dems are using Tammy because she was maimed serving this country and when the opposition attacks her views, the dems do as you do and make false accusations and start with the swiftboating nonsense.
Dale, when two war hero's,Bush 41 and Dole lost to draft dodger Clinton, what were your views then,I'm sure as partisan then, as they are now.

Illegals have been coming here since I can remember, probably since before I was born. They couldn't do anything in the 60's and they won't stop it now. Congress can pass any law, put up that stupid fence...but people will still come to the land of plenty.

The woman lost both legs in the war, she supports an immigration plan endorsed by John McCain and George Bush himself, and this sleazebag is lying about her stance and demonizing her. I hope he loses by a landslide.

Rich...I believe the ball has been in your court
for 6 years....I guess you guys have a real grip on things. Please don't tell me that the democrats stone walled you and you couldn't get anything passed, that only sounds so absurd. Hey look at the bright side...we got a 700 mile fence on a 2500 mile border....you feel safer , don't you?

I honor anybody who puts their life on the line, and especially those who have shed their blood in service to the republic. However, that in and of itself is no reason to support any candidate.
Yes, if this were my district I would vote for Duckworth, but it would be because she would be a better Representative, not because she's a vet.

Bill...I do feel a little safer, I would like one across the boarders to the north and the south across the entire expanse. Listen, the difference between us is that when my guys screw up I hold their feet to the fire and say that what they are doing is not acceptable. It would be easier if both sides of the asile worked together on this, I just don't see that happening much from the democrats. Both sides ae at fault, by my vote still is going for the ones that are continuning to try to get it right. Republicans know what the democrats don't seem to get, we need to work together not against one another. What is your plan for keeping us safe, nation building? How much more technology do you want to give to those who are trying to kill us?
Posted by: rich | October 19, 2006 8:35 AM
Dale, you say that Roskam's voting record for veterans is very poor. I would like to know as a state senator what exactly his votes on vetersans are. Please explain rather than your ususal hit and run attacks.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, outside of you, Dale, of the nearly 20 veterans I know not one of them agrees with your contentions -- and those veterans range in age from 25 to 76.

This may be slightly off topic, but why would Carter hate the military? He's a graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis and served onboard Atlantic and Pacific fleet subs.

> You come into the country illegally you get
> sent home without the possibility of ever
> coming back legally again.
Take a good look people -- this is the face of contemporary fascism. Citizens who will vote to forcibly deport 10 million people from the United States. Why? One, because enforcement of our country's immigration policies has been deliberately weak for the past few decades. And two, because we need those landscaping jobs!

Thank you, Swamp, for exposing this absolute lie about one of our finest candidates to run for office, Tammy Duckworth. Tammy is the voice we need in Washington to get a start on unraveling this mess that the Bush administration and Republican led Congress has gotten us into. Every time I see that Roskam ad on TV, I can’t understand how any political party can be allowed to run absolute lies about an opponent. Personally I think this type of campaigning says a lot about the integrity of Roskam and the Republican Party in general. They seem to be pulling out every dirty trick they can to keep control of the House.
VOTE FOR TAMMY DUCKWORTH

Rich...perception......I see the same from your side, although I hate to use that phrase your side, it should be our side. I hold accountable ever politician to do his duty to this country no matter what side he comes from. How did we get to this point? You say them, I say them! What ever happened to the public frowning on dirty politics? Name-calling? Demonizing the other side? Each and everyone of us hold some blame in this. We didn't DEMAND more from them. This blame game has to stop....What ever it is thats wrong, we all broke it. Lets fix it..and we need to start talking about it yesterday!

Radian,
That's Paulo's typical garbage he spews. Don't forget he also said Clinton hated the military. Nevermind the fact that it was the Clinton military that gave us swift victory in taking out both the Afghan and Iraq government. The mess that has happened since is because this Administrations post-war planning.
Posted by: jethro | October 19, 2006 11:10 AM
Bill, I agree. Let's start to hold them all accountable. And ourselves as well. I am for the person who is going to keep me and my family safe. Not just in words but in action and deeds done. Let's be sure that everyone realizes that we have to be right 100% of the time or we may lose big. The terrorists only have to get through once and many will start to lay blame even though they themselves by their inaction will have been the most at fault. Wake up fellow Americans, we, the people, have the real power. Let's take it back from those who don't use it for all of OUR greater good.

Radian and Jethro: Thanks for standing up to Paulo's asinine comment about Dems hating the military. This was news to me, being from a military family. Paulo must be desperate, and must also wonder why so many Iraq and Gulf vets are running as Dems this year.
Go Tammy Duckworth!

Roskam and the NRCC have spent millions of dollars running racist attacks on Duckworth. Look at the photoshopping of her eyes in that commercial above to make her look "scary asian".
The claims that she supports amnesty and giving welfare and SS to illegals is a lie. She supports John McCain's Senate bill. There is no Ted Kennedy bill, he's one of 9 co-sponsors.
Millions of dollars spent on this crap. When are Republicans going to run honest campaigns about real issues instead to pandering to fear and smear? I've had enough of their lies, their scandals, their stupid war on science and their shortsighted suicidal economic policies. Roskam talks about cutting taxes in one breath and embracing earmarks the next. We have a $9 trillion dollar debt and borrow another $300 billion a year from the Red Chinese. Even if the Red Chinese weren't communists who don't believe in demcoracy, free speech, civil rights etc. their banking system is as corrupt and fragile as the Saving & Loans were in the US in the 1980s. It makes no sense to tie our financial future to communist bankers.
If you're planning on voting Republican this year, do the country a favor. Just stay home.

In answer to Paulo who said, "To set the record straight, the dems have a problem with hating the military,(Carter)...(Clinton)..." Jimmy Carter served in the U.S.Navy. He also did a very admirable job in bringing home the hostages from Iran. They were released at the moment he left office. He sacrificed another run for the presidency and didn't campaign so that he could work at freeing them. He has been quoted as saying that it would have been so easy to have sent in troops as everyone was calling for, but that would have resulted in the deaths of some or all of the hostages. Give credit were it is earned regardless of political affiliation. Oh, and by the by...I think Franklin Delano Roosevelt (a dem) did an admirable job of waging war and giving his sons to serve in the military.

Granny,
I have pointed out Carter's tremendous contribution to the nation as a US Navy nuclear engineer under Ad. Rickover many times. He was Rickover's go to guy for testing and developing our nuclear strike capable navy.
He, Carter, literally gave all subsequent presidents, Dem and Repub, a major tool to help win the cold war.
Yet not once have the cons. posting here even acknowledged his actual military contributions.
I have also pointed out the fact that all the hostages survived, and that many would have died if a military strike was conducted.
All to no avail.
