What does Karl Rove know? pt II: The Swamp

The Swamp

Posted by Frank James at 7:42 am CDT

Yesterday, I asked what does White House political guru Karl Rove know that we don't know? This morning I refine that question: What does he know that many conservatives don't?

The Washington Times, the same paper that had yesterday's story about a confident Rove telling Times journalists during a visit that Republicans will hold both chambers of Congress, has another story (registration required) this morning that says conservatives are so turned off by Republican leadership, many will skip voting this year.

According to the story by Ralph Z. Hallow:

"The message hasn't gotten across because a lot of people are sick and tired of thinking the only reason for going to the polls is to vote for the Republicans because they are lesser of two evils," said Tom McClusky, vice president for government affairs at the Family Research Council (FRC), a leading social conservative group.

"Conservatives aren't motivated to come out, is what I'm finding," said conservative campaign consultant Rick Shaftan, who is based in Sparta, N.J. "They see no reason to re-elect the people who are in office."

A top Republican pollster confidentially echoed those sentiments.

"There are very definitely trouble signs in many states of what we call the 'LRs' -- the lethargic Republicans," said the pollster, who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity. "They are unhappy with the president and have little love lost for Congress."

At another point in the story, there's this passage:

To explain the disaffection of some conservative voters, Mr. Shaftan cited the national party's assistance to liberal Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee against conservative challenger Stephen Laffey in last month's Rhode Island primary.

"The Republican leadership spent $1 million on helping Chafee, and then it wonders why conservatives don't think they're wanted in this party," Mr. Shaftan said. "They think the leadership wants them to come out every year, shine your shoes, then go sit in the back of the bus, take their Bibles and read them and shut up."

Clearly, Rove has heard similar assessments from fellow, politically savvy conservative Republicans. That would seem to argue for something short of the confidence he expressed the other day to the Times.

It's all very curious.

If only no one showed up to vote...do you think they would get the message? We are certainly are in need of real leaders.

We are all very sick of the Karl Rove kind of politics. Kudos to Chicago Tribune for endorsing sensible local candidates like Tammy Duckworth and Melissa Bean.

KKK Karl knows that on 11/7 the fat lady will be singing to the fat boy.He and all the other crooks better get them Dem trial lawyers ready!

It's the republican way, They're your best friends until the election is over... Then they go back to padding their friends pockets (and their own).

Rove is possibly the dirtiest politician in recent times. We need to insist on independent examination and certification of all electronic voting machines. You would think that the integrity of our voting systems is something all parties would want to insure. After claims of irregularities in voting machines in 2004 there would be a public outcry to independently verify that these machines cannot be tampered with, yet I still haven’t heard any follow up on this subject. I wouldn’t put anything past Rove and his swift-boating buddies.

I dont worry about Uncle Rove, he is enjoying his breakfast right now and undoubtedly has a trick or two up his sleeve. Still no sign of the "October surprise", should be any day now. Probably an Osama Bin Laden capture, timed for 11 days before the elections, perfect!

In the meantime he will work the church rosters, get the minions to pound the streets to remind everyone of how scared they should be, and whip out a few new labels for people to toss around the water cooler. I think 'cut and run' has worn down slightly, maybe he can revive 'flip-floppers'? Terrorist coddlers? Osama Bin Lovers? Oh that zany Uncle Rove, such clever wit!

Dont worry America, just crawl back under your desks and be afraid, there is terror everywhere and only the Bush crew can keep you safe. Even though there have been no new attacks since 9/11, we should still cower in fear, its called staying the course. Be afraid, and refuse to change your minds or opinions(Flip-Flopper!)- its the new American way!

You need to ask, "What does (Karl Rove) know that many conservatives don't?"

Just read the front page of your own website:

"Officials still haven't fixed electronic problems behind a virtual meltdown in spring elections."

I have NO DOUBT the Republicans will retain control of both the House and the Senate. Like the past elections, this one is so close, you can steal it easily if you know which machines to rig or which ballots to botch or which lines to make interminably long.

This isn't rocket science. But Rove certainly has the political science down to an art form.

I love how our mind-numbed Leftists continuall say the republicans line their pockets!! Hey folks, what exactly was that $1,500 birthday check the Boy Governor's 7-year-old daughter received? I could use a $1,500 check in my back pocket to cover my car repair bill!! Governor, any thoughts of help here???

Frank James purports to be bewildered at Karl Rove's vote analysis, and wonders why Rove is optomistic. Perhaps, Frank, the reason is that Rove actually talks to Republican voters--unlike you.

This article is just a second-hand copy of what some other newspaper wrote. A real reporter, Frank, might try talking to Mr. Shaftan. Or try talking to Rove himself. Does the Tribune have any rule forbidding its reporters from talking to Republicans?

"The Swamp" has been going on for 10 months now. It has a battery of self-proclaimed "political reporters" who have posted literally hundreds of stories. However, in all those 10 months, in all those articles, I can't once recall any Swamp opinionator actually talking to an ordinary Republican voter about politics. Occasionally, and only when compelled to, a Swamp reporter talks to a Republican politician. But a voter? One of the 51% who voted for Pres. Bush in 2004?

Frank, if you want to learn what Republicans are thinking, try talking to them direct. You might just learn something.

bill r.,

If no one showed up to vote, they would be peeing themselves in ecstasy - it would save a lot of bother about how to win/fudge/steal future elections. I personally have nothing to vote for or against really. Neither of our senators is up. My representative (Gutierrez) will win no matter what. I can't stomach either of the major party candidates for governor and I haven't decided about the Green party candidate. I can't vote for Stroger, but I certainly can't vote for Peraica. My state senate candidate feels she should be elected because "Cicero could use some state help with its rat problem" - she didn't say whether she was talking about the four-legged or two-legged kind. But, nonetheless, I will be there on election day - please do the same.

John D,

I'm really not trying to be rude, but I'm trying to figure out why someone who could use $1500 for car repairs is such an ardent Bush supporter? What exactly has the Bush administration done for you? The type of people that Bush has helped don't worry about car repairs - they simply buy new cars.

I'm not necessarily saying that the Democrats have done significantly better (although I do believe they have done at least somewhat better, and I think they are at least somewhat more sincere when they say they care). But even if you're not ready to jump on the Democratic bandwagon, why do you rush to defend all things Republican/right wing?

John that's the Gov. As to Karl Rove he is a very little man with no moral values. He lies, cheats and will do anything to win. Evan breaking the law. His Oct hit will be Saddam will be found guilty on Nov 5th killed Nov 6th.

Jane D.,
I see you call our governor "the boy governor".

I think he meets the age requirement little Janey

Judy Bozo Topinka was the STATE TREASURER while George Ryan, and his buddies were selling drivers licenses to illegals.
There is no way in h**l that she could not have known about that as Treasurer of the State, unless she was completely not doing her job.
It's the same predicament that Denny Hastert is in right now.

And I love how people like John D attack anyone they can to try to change the subject from their disastrous president and his disastrous party!

John D. I love how you're the master of comparing appls to oranges. You cry about Blago and Henry Reid which were both apparently part of some shady dealing but you're so willing to look past the MAJOR scandals surrounding the people you support. Delay? Cunningham took MILIONS!!!! and now he's going to jail. Bob Ney???? Now another Repub is having his house raided by the FBI.

But those all don't compare to a $1500 check the gov gave to one his friends kids. You're so far right you can't see your left hand.

Per Bruce:

"Frank James purports to be bewildered at Karl Rove's vote analysis, and wonders why Rove is optomistic. Perhaps, Frank, the reason is that Rove actually talks to Republican voters--unlike you."

Bruce:

Herr Karl only talks with people that matter to him, i.e., those willing to contribute to Republicant campaigns. These are not run of the mill voters, they are in the elite.

I personally enjoy talking to "regular" Republicans these days, because just about every one of them is ashamed that they blindly supported these criminals despite all the objective evidence telling them not to.

Other than simpletons like you, John D. and Bill, people with even the barest of clues now know that it was a mistake to support the present cabal. They still claim to be conservatives, but they recognize a mistake when they see one. In short, your "man of the people" argument is as dishonest as the WMD argument that Murderer Boy used to dupe you into supporting the "war." Unfortunately for you, you're too blind to know when you've been had.

BTW: Please regale for us some of your stories form the front in Baghdad. A manly man like you must been among the first to enlist.

Are the Republican voters any different from you Bruce? In complete denial about what is happening in Iraq, dismissive of Congressional scandals, preaching accountability but not practicing it.

John D., there are some great stories in the Trib today about Blago.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich said Wednesday that he would not return campaign contributions raised by an Arab-American organization even though an internal investigation determined the state employee who heads the group organized a Blagojevich fundraiser on state time.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/chi-0610190032oct19,1,2061362.story?coll=chi-news-hed
Talk about arrogance! Who cares what the law says? It's Blago's money and he's keeping it.

And then there's, of course, Tony Rezko getting busted upon his return to Chicago. Nothing like having your top fundraiser and best friend indicted twice, eh?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-061019rezko,1,2269551.story?coll=chi-news-hed

Hey G, you are the epitome of the typical uninformed Leftist.
1. It's Harry Reid, not Henry.
2. Blogo didn't give the $1,500 check, his daughter received it as a birthday gift from a Blogo friend.
3. I have not excused any Republican scandal. Cunningham IS in prison, not going, as he should. Ney is following. Good riddance to them.

Maybe Karl has a shrewd financial analyst who saw this coming: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-101906dow,0,7077473.story?coll=la-home-headlines
I defy anyone to spin this news in a negative light.

John D., not only did Blago not give the $1,500 back, he's refusing to give back money raised by a state employee who organized the fundraiser on taxpayer time, even though his own internal invesigator told him he should give the money back. Moxie, thy name is Blagojevich.

"Billy Boy Topiinka" What you thinkin?

Does all your blather mean you're not voting for "Blago".He's clean as a whistle.Quit posting falsehoods about our Govenor.

You're not going to go "Mel Gibson" on me again tonight, are you?

Bill,

Have you even lived in the proud Democratic leaning State of Illinois long enough to vote against Blago???

Rick Sanitorium could use your help right now you know.

Judy Bozo Topinka is not going to win...end of story....

Bill:

Trickle down economics does not and has not worked. Your positive news does not tell the whole story.

The Dow reflects that so-called "blue chip" companies are doing well. Nothing more and nothing less. The corporations should be doing well, as they've been running the country for six years. As a consequence, blue chips have seen: their taxes cut, at the expense of an expanding budget deficit; their labor costs drop, due to international outsourcing and to technological advances that enable computers to do work that humans used to do. Thus, even if revenue is flat, earnings increase, because costs have been reduced. Even after factoring in fat cat compensation packages, corporations still have enough money to increase their share value. This is great if you're a money manager, but not so great if you're struggling to pay rent and thus do not dabble in stock speculation.

The question for voters is not whether blue chips are doing well, but instead whether their families are doing well. On that score, we know that "good" jobs are being replaced by Wal-Mart and Starbucks jobs, that average incomes have been dropping in real terms, that foreclosures are up, and that millions of people lack health insurance. These facts are, as suggested above, perfectly consistent with a booming Dow.

Surely ou must find it noteworthy that your Buddy John D. has to whine about spending money to fix his 1991 Taurus (or whatever). Your good news does not tell the whole story by any stretch of the imagination.

---

BTW: Still waiting for you to share some of your stories of bravery and liberation in I-Rack. You did enlist, didn't you?

At the risk of listening to A Blinkin tell me that the Dow crossing the 12,000 mark is a bad thing, I'm going to let that one go. I just don't see what it has to do with trickle down economics. I think when American companies succeed, America succeeds since the business of America is business. It's that simple to me.

I'd much rather concentrate on this post, which may be the best, most unintentional piece of humor ever posted on this site in the 10 months it's existed. Of course, it's from Raving Loon (p.s. I've lived in Illinois for 5 years... again) I quote:

"Does all your blather mean you're not voting for 'Blago'.He's clean as a whistle.Quit posting falsehoods about our Govenor.'

Falseoods? Did the Tribune publish a falsehood when it said Tony Rezko, Blagojevich's to fundraiser and state business manager, was indicted? Did the Tribune publish a falsehood when it reported that Blagojevich accepted a $1,500 campaign check disguised as a gift to one of his children? Did the Tribune publish a falsehood when it reported that federal investigators had Blagojevich and his administration under their microscope? Did the Tribune publish a falsehood when they asked Blagojevich if he'd hired a criminal defense attorney and Blagojevich refused to answer the question?

But to some people, he's still clean as a whistle. Fascinating, really.

P.S. Loon, I never much liked Santorum. Never voted for him. I even voted for Wofford against him once. I was more of an Arlen Spector guy. Pat Toomey's doing great things with the Club for Growth, though. I'm sure he'll find his way back into Pa. politics, too.

The biggest problem that my relatives back home have told me about is the "brain drain" from the Pittsburgh area, where the best graduates from Pitt, CMU, UPenn, Penn State and the other big schools all take jobs out of state. Ridge started, and Rendell, has continued, a program to draw us expatriates back where you get tax breaks and other inticements if you move back to the state. The problem is the tax benefits don't mean a thing if they don't have the jobs young professionals want. The state's still not creating enough jobs to keep its young people and the tax base is dwindling. Kind of sad, really.

I don't want to engage in a debate of what causes that or whether the tax breaks are a good idea, I'm just pointing out the fact. If you're really that interested in my background, the least I can do is be cordial. I have nothing to hide. Have you lived in Chicago all your life?

Bill,
I'm heartbroken, you gave Loon credit for my question.

If you were not a resident during your time in college, then is 5 years really a fair assessment ???

Hey Bill,What do you think about that family that got killed by the illegal alien driver that George Ryan sold a drivers license to,while Judy Bud Topinka looked the other way as State Treasurer.
Were you living here then ????

Rick Sanitorium is screaming for your help Bill.

"...to some people, he's still clean as a whistle.

Not anybody with at least two firing synapses in the noggin.

Actually, Frank James's question has been answered, and answered in the same newspaper (the Washington Times) that he quotes above. Predictably, this answer was not part of his article:

"Grover Norquist, a close associate of White House political strategist Karl Rove, dismissed concerns about voter turnout as empty threats. "There are always in every election cycle self-appointed conservative leaders who announce, 'You haven't done enough for me, so my troops are staying home,' " Mr. Norquist said. "The National Rifle Association, Americans for Tax Reform, the [National] Right to Life Committee -- the groups that actually put lead on the target and who do stuff all the time, they're not unhappy," Mr. Norquist said. "The people who are whining are the guys that don't have grass roots that they can actually move. So they are frustrated, and they don't have anything to do other than threaten not to participate.""

John E, Bill and Finito are so screwed up and obsessed with us,they can't even respond to the proper post.

Can you imagine these two guys leading troops into battle?

Now,Finito is blasting Bill for calling Blago clean as a whistle!

Ranting Buffoon

It's you that I'm blasting for calling Blagojevich "clean as a whistle".

Of course if you had at least two firing synapses in your noggin you would have figured that out.

RB,
Stop implying that you served in the military. It's disgusting!

Finaldo,I find it highly offensive the way you speak of Bill.If he thinks Gov.Blago is a good man,you should respect his choice.

"I think when American companies succeed, America succeeds since the business of America is business. It's that simple to me."

Bill,

Your post about the "business of America being business" was cute and catchy. While that may be true, there is really no argument that the social compact that has existed since World War II has been broken, and that the spoils of America's business is going to fewer and fewer people. These "American" businesses (many of which are headquartered in such American places as Bermuda, Netherlands Antilles, Latvia, etc.)that are succeeding are using foreign labor, tax loopholes and accounting shenanigans to manipulate their post-profit tax burden down to nothing. On top of that, the real wages of the WORKERS of these companies have actually declined over the last 20 years. That is unsustainable.

For America to prosper, the growth of the economy needs to be broad based. We have had 5 years of "economic growth," but who is benefitting? I am a real estate developer, and now that the cheap credit and explosive growth in the residential market appears to be finished, how are the regular people going to keep propping up the economy? Do you not see that the downturn in housing is going to have a huge effect on the nation's prosperity, from individual homeowners being unable to draw equity out of their houses to prop up their spending, mortgage payments rising, and an overall construction slowdown that affects builders, contractors, brokers, mortgage companies, retail and many other sectors of the economy.

Now that we are facing a recession (and as others have pointed out, the Dow hitting 12,000 has little relevance for non-investors, i.e., regular people) how are we going to cushion the fall? Taxes are ARTIFICIALLY low, propped up by borrowing that will indebt my generation and those that will follow, and all of the benefits have gone to the top. As even the conservative economist Robert Samuelson said, this is "Trickle Up Economics." I could go on about how the money used to fund the tax cuts for the top 1% came from payroll taxes paid by the masses and that this is the grossest theft in American history, but I will leave that for a future post.

The reality is, the only way to get this country back on track is to move back to the progressive system that has worked so well for so long. If Republican economics really worked, than the years 1993-2000 would have been the Second Great Depression, and not the broadest and largest economic expansion in history. America is tired of a government that lives to comfort the comfortable. It is time for change and on November 7 the people will speak overwhelmingly out of hope, and not fear.

Bufoon:
Are you really that dim? Please explain to me what you don't understand about this.

Bryan,
Don't forget that credit for the boom in the 90s is due to George H.W. Bush going against his promise of "no new taxes". His party hated him for it but it worked.

what does Karl R. know? he knows that Americans don't vote for losers, and volunteers don't work for lost causes, so if you want to pull your bacon out of the fire, you'd better put on a happy, confident face, regardless of the polls.

Fawnito,there's no plan.You can't call someone dim,without a plan.Where's your plan?

Janet,

Some credit can be placed on Bush 41's tax policy, but the broader framework was laid in the '93 tax bill under Clinton and the subsequent Welfare Reform Act.
