Trent Lott is back.

Once the consummate Senate insider, then a political pariah, and now a Senate insider again, Lott, the Mississippi Republican, was elected Minority Whip this morning. The secret ballot was 25-24, with Lott edging out Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

Lott was ousted from his position as Senate Republican leader in 2002 after he praised then-Sen. Strom Thurmond’s segregationist 1948 presidential campaign during a 100th birthday tribute. In his place, the Bush White House essentially installed Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), who is not likely to go down in history as one of the better Senate Majority Leaders.

Rather than resign in disgrace, Lott stayed on in the Senate, playing a pivotal role in helping to get the money and legislation necessary to rebuild the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. And he became the behind-the-scenes go-to-guy for senators needing advice on legislative strategy and coalition building.

Wednesday morning, the incoming Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Harry Reid of Nevada, had only kind words for Lott at a breakfast meeting with reporters - even though he did not know who would win the Republican race for whip.

“I have great affection for Trent Lott. He and I worked together when he was the leader. I have great respect for his abilities. I like him a lot. Behind the scenes these last two years, he has been extremely helpful to me,’’ Reid said, noting that “if he wins, it’s a great comeback.’’

In an April, 2006 article in The Chicago Tribune, Republican senators insisted that Lott was as relevant as ever.

"He unquestionably is probably one of the best floor tacticians I have encountered in my 28 years here," Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) said at the time. "Like E.F. Hutton, when he speaks, people listen."

Now that Republicans are in the minority in the House and the Senate, Republicans may have realized that they will need that sort of acumen if they are to get some of their ideas through or if they are to stop the Democrats from going too far. Lott will be working with Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who was elected the Senate's Minority Leader.

Hopefully for the Republicans, Trent doesn't bring up how great segregation was.

Who will be the first to trot out "the Dems have Robert Byrd" horse?

Now the Repubs are getting back to their base. There must be dancing in the aisle's at the CCC headquarters!!!

We wouldn't had all these troubles if we had elected Strom Thurmond as Prez.

"Who will be the first to trot out "the Dems have Robert Byrd" horse?"

Sure, it's never wrong when it's your party, just the other guys...

Not on topic, but vitally important info nonetheless for so many of the regulars here...

The Repubs love to have their racist types in leadership positions,it fires up their base.

Dems twist the meaning of a speech.
Hide Byrde in the closet, pull a sheet over him.

When are people ever going to grow up and act like adults? Does anyone out there think?

*Knock* *Knock* Hello? Is there an adult in the house?

(stop twisting around to look)

Lott's the wrong guy for the position, especially if the GOP is looking for a clear and fresh image. This could really hurt the GOP in 2008 elections.

Perhaps the Republicans want to return to the "good old days".

It's nice to have the Dixiecrat back. Harry can call on Trent's experience with the bogus Clinton impeachment, to bring down the real criminals of Bush&Co. Besides, after the Dems take back the oval office, we'll need Trent to have his buddies over at Northrop Grummans build a new nuclear sub in honor of the 44th president. How does the U.S.S. John R.Edwards sound?

I agree with Sam. And I think it's fabulous.

These two parties are so chummy they are really one party. The Democrats weren't installed by voters to pal around with and praise the Republicans, they were elected to do something about the mess made in recent years. Sadly, it looks like the mess will continue. Guess that's what you get when the same corporations fund the campaigns of both parties.

It's hard to keep a good old boy down. Welcome back Trent Lott. Its inbreeding time again on the hill. Remember,it's best not to wear the hood 'till after dark this time around.

Hmmm, so far there is open warfare in the House Demoncraps between John Murtha and Henny Stoyer and no Swamp. Now ABC News is reporting that Jack Abramoff is singing tunes and nailed 6-8 Dem Senators as particularly corrupt, especially Sen. Harry Reid. No swamp on that either.

Oh, that's right, the Tribune Washington Bureau works for Howard Dean.

Maybe Frank James can come up something to trty and explain away this Harry Reid fiasco too??

From ABC News, loonybird leftists, not Fox News:

As convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff reported to federal prison today, a source close to the investigation surrounding his activities told ABC News that Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was one of the members of Congress Abramoff had allegedly implicated in his cooperation with federal prosecutors.

A spokesperson for Reid, elected yesterday as the Senate Majority Leader, said the senator had done nothing illegal or unethical.

"We have no idea what Abramoff is telling prosecutors to save his skin, but I do know that these kind of old allegations are completely ridiculous and untrue," Sen. Reid's spokesman Jim Manley told ABC News.

A source close to the investigation says Abramoff told prosecutors that more than $30,000 in campaign contributions to Reid from Abramoff's clients "were no accident and were in fact requested by Reid."

Abramoff has reportedly claimed the Nevada senator agreed to help him on matters related to Indian gambling.

The Associated Press reported earlier this year that Reid wrote at least four letters helpful to the tribes that had contributed money to his campaign.

Reid has denied there was any connection between the letters and the contributions and has said he is a longtime opponent of certain kinds of Indian reservation gambling.

The AP reported that Reid acknowledged "routine contacts" with Abramoff's lobbying partners and intervening to block rival tribal casinos.

The AP also reported that Abramoff's billing records showed extensive contact with Reid's office over a three-year period in which Reid collected more than $68,000 from Abramoff's firm, partners and clients.

Prosecutors have said that Abramoff's cooperation is essential to the corruption investigation, but, so far, they have brought only one prosecution against a member of Congress connected to Abramoff, Republican Bob Ney of Ohio, who resigned.

The source said prosecutors do not intend to rely solely on Abramoff's account of events, and his allegations against Reid and others will not necessarily result in criminal charges.

Sources close to the federal investigation say Abramoff has offered testimony about his contacts with "six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic senators" and an ever larger number of Republican members of Congress.

In addition to Reid, the sources say Abramoff has been most closely questioned about his contacts with Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont.), who was defeated in last week's election.

"Being defeated may have been one of the best things that ever happened to Burns," said a source close to the investigation. "There is much more interest in members of Congress who are still in office," the source said.

Burns, who received more than $150,000 in Abramoff-connected campaign contributions, has strongly denied any wrongdoing and returned the money.

Sen. Reid has been an outspoken critic of the connections between Abramoff and Republican legislators.

In a speech earlier this year, Sen. Reid described it as "a program where the lobbyists paid and the Republican members of Congress played."

John D.,
I wouldn't believe everything the Abramoff says. He inflated the number times and how close he was w/ the President and the White House...unless of course you think what he claims is as much fact as what you are implying about his alleged relationship to Dems

little Johnny/JD, you forgot to mention(R)Duncan Hunter, and(R)Conrad Burns among the many who are going to bite the Jack Abramoff bullet.

Harry is clean, put your swiftboat away...again

Hey, Juanito! I got the foil on, man!

Hmmm, so far there is open warfare in the House Demoncraps

Finally we hear from the elementary school children.

John D...Are you a grown up? You must be the most immature poster I have ever seen. Can't you start any post without name calling?

As a Democrat, I congratulate Sen. Lott and the Republican leadership for its choice. This is good news for the country... and great news for the Democrats.

I see that "Karl Rove" style attacks are still in vogue. If this keeps up, our venerable political partys will be forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel for candidates. Oh wait, the Repubs already did, with W. But enough of that. If you folks really wan't to see things cleaned up in Washington, then write your congressional reps and demand 'real' campaign and lobby reform. Boehner had a chance to address the latter in the aftermath of the Abramoff business, but chose to go "golfing" instead. Mabe Nancy will pick up the ball. In fact, I'm going to write my Congressman, Jim Matheson, this very minute. I don't know that I'll get very far though, he's still ticked I called him a Rebublican in "sheep's clothing". Or mabe it was that crack I made about the late Gov. Scott Matheson, a revered moderate Democrat, "turning in his grave" at the thought of son Jim voting for torture and illegal wiretapping. I'm sorry Jim, it's hard being a Dem in Utah.

Not to be a whiner. But if you folks at "The Swamp" are striving to make this a productive, or at least an interesting and lively blog, it would help if you could post comments in a timely manner. I know the publisher is cutting back on staff and funding, but this is ridiculous. By the time comments are posted on one topic, you've already introduced a half dozen more...just me venting.

John D:

Many of us who post here don't swear by each and every Democratic politician there is. We're not so naive, or brainwashed. Politics has always had dirty players, and probably always will.

I don't know all the facts, but I do know that the Republicans have seriously harmed this country. Nothing can compare with the incompetence and bungling this administration has displayed.

Having Lott in a leadership position and the Harold Ford ads should help with the Repub effort to attract more African American voters!

Little Johnny, give it up.The Abramaoff scandal is all about Repubs.

Where's your buddy Bill, did he take John E's advice and sign up?

By recycling Lott, Republicans have apparently seen the future and it's behind them.

PhilW, got mine on too... and I'M INVINCIBLE!

Hey gang!

As I said in a recent post, Change Course; 'Hard Right Rudder!'

Dern'it , I was right, again.

Ya see, Trent has a likable persona. He seems nice and folksy.
I don't dislike the guy as a person. But underneath the patina of affability is the heart of an 'old south' hero. They actually hate America. They are the ones that attempted to destroy us as a nation. Yet they get the cred as patriots?

Here's a Billy Holiday song, recorded in 1938. Talk about bravery. (Nina Simones (RIP) modern 1960 versions is also terrific)

Listen up, Trent!

Strange Fruit; (Lewis allen)

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

You are correct, sir!

They need to find a way to let postings update without the intervention of a person. Obviously, they do not have someone available to do this on a regular basis.

Crunch the stuff through a dirty word finder and post it during un-covered hours.

Having said that, I am sure the reporters, Mark, Frank, Dave, Bill, all like to vet many of the entries, but let's get this stuff moving!

Of course, we might find out the opposite; That we, libs and cons posting here, are the rational and thoughtful ones! Un-freaking real, huh?

We don't know what we don't know.

C.Morris,

I agree, use the dirty word filter and put it on autopilot. Also, as insurance they could use a "Report Abuse" button so posters could flag especially unfair and nasty personal attacks.

C'mon Trib, this is the 21st century!

C. M. That Lewis Allen tune is quite moving. Much more powerful than Neil Young's Southern Man. I heard it once on a PBS documentary, movie or something. I thought it was a Billie Holliday creation. Hard for me to comprehend some of our country's racist past, or that some of our representatives in Congress could be complicit. As a teenager I recoiled at the actions of segregationist Democrats like George Wallace and Lester Maddox. Things are much improved these days, but remnants of bigotry still persist. I know one rural area in Utah where the schools refused to honor a holiday for Martin Luther King, but they still liked the idea of a day off, so they traded the MLK Holiday for a three day weekend in October to coincide with the deer hunt. I guess all this is loosely relevant to Trent Lott and others.

The naughty word filter sounds o.k., but I'm not sure about the "report abuse" button. Some people on this blog have pretty thin skins. And others, and I'm not naming names, keep emploring the editors to censure, censure, censure.

Sen. Lott's redemption and election is a good news to the Republican. They need it. May congratulations to him and the party.

Now that I'm thinking about it, the "Report Abuse" button might be abused. You're probably right, unlettered.

I can't figure out the editing standard here -- or if there even is one for that matter. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I've had what I thought were pretty harmless posts edited or blocked altogether.

It's interesting though; I've seen some fairly nasty ethinic slurs routinely go through, but the standard "dirty words" don't make the cut. And "irrelevancies and unfair attacks" are NEVER removed.

bill r. - - do you read this blog regularly? John E. ususally sounds like a two-year old. I think there's enough immaturity to go around on both sides of the aisle here

Bill R., before you start questioning other people's maturity, first look at your own. Second, look at the posts of your fellow loons here. Any post from John E., Raving Loon, C Morris and others have about as much credibility and intelligence behind them as a thesis paper written by a kindergarten student would have. "Little Johnny D" and the other names constantly thrown at anyone to the right of far left or anyone with an intelligence level beyond sixth grade? Come on, Bill R.
And John E., Duncan Hunter has not been embroiled in any Abramoff scandal and Conrad Burns already lost re-election because of it.
And it's hilarious how the Wacked-out Left believes everything Abramoff says when it pertains to a Republican, but when he fingers a Demoncrap, then there is no merit. You folks truly are priceless.

Yes,
or just jerk the babbling offenders in the morning, or during the prime posting times, when there is obviously a MONITOR working to get updates in quickly.

Frankly, I want to hear everything.

Unlettered, all;

As I recall, Allen worked closely with Billie to produce this song.
She, a stunningly beautiful young woman at the time, and a huge talent, was forced to work as a prostitute at age 13.

Talk about overcoming your childhood traumas. She also had to fight heroin addiction and alcoholism most of her adult life.

Well, this is one that really belongs in 'Sweet Home Chicago', which is closing in on 100 posts.

Yes Blah Blah, I have posted here once or twice
and my post still stands. If you have any problems with any posters maturity, you are more than welcome to address them as you wish just as I have. I have seen John D's posts for months and just about everyone starts with some sort of name calling.
This brings the level of discussion down to a childs level and helps no one. If everyone takes responsibility for their own actions whether someone else does it or not, maybe the level of discussion could reach a new high.

Bill R., my only name calling is calling the Far Left, the Loony Left. When one reads their nonsense, it is quite clear to anyone with a clue that Loony Left is not namecalling, but just simply and plainly calling it like it is. Other than that, no other name calling by me.

I guess this is not your post?

Demoncraps is telling it like it is. I mean if John E can call every moderate and conservative a member of the KKK, racist and names even worse, calling Democrats Demoncraps is pretty mild. Like I said before, my comments are in response to the nonsense dished out by Johnny E., Raving Loon (probably one and the same), C Morris, Kennybunkport and the rest of the hateful nonsense dished out by your buddies.

Little Johnny,I've warned you before about being your worst nightmare. If you call me Demon-Crap one more time,I'm complaining to the Moderator and you will be removed from this Blog forever.

How does it feel to be a MINORITY????

Wake up a Little Johnny, wake up.
