Harriet Miers, the president's general counsel, friend and onetime nominee for the US Supreme Court, turned in her resignation today.
President Bush, who had appointed Miers to a vacancy on the high court only to withdraw her in the face of growing criticism from senators who found her lacking, accepted the resignation of a longtime friend from Texas yesterday and it was announced publicly with a letter today.
"It's hard to leave the tasks at hand," Miers wrote to Bush. "They are gravely important, and I shall miss greatly the arena in which the battles of our times are being fought."
Miers' resignation is effective Jan. 31 - and she informed the president yesterday, submitting her formal letter today.
"He has regretfully accepted her resignation," White House spokesman Tony Snow said, explaining Miers' departure as a matter of her own personal timing.
"She's been here for six years... It's hard duty," Snow said. "It's really bittersweet... She has decided that it's time to move on."

I'll never forget when she called W.
"the smartest man I ever met".
When she said that jaws all over the country dropped, and Faux News was smiling.
See ya Harriet,go back to Texas, you fit in just fine down there with all the other "Earl's".

It sounds like Junior is making room for some real attorneys. Incompetent cronies don't provide much cover when faced with the probability of having to answer tough questions.

Her nomination to the Supreme Court has always been one of the strangest things Bush has done, in my opinion.
Subjecting a person so unqualified to the scrutiny of the press and the confirmation process at the Supreme Court level seemed to verge on being cruel to me. For whatever reason, Bush was content to let one of his closest advisors be professionally humiliated for no apparent reason.

Oh, Harriet, we hardly knew ye!

"She has decided..."? I'm confused. I thought Bush was the decider.

Maybe they're expecting legal salvos and need a heavyweight.
Opening the mail of private citizens without a court order, for a very recent example? What the hell?
Maybe Harriet belongs with Ozzie. Maybe she saw the light.
I'm still more interested in the little-reported resignation of General Casey -- particularly in light of what I expect to be an announcement of a troop surge -- to which Casey has voiced his opposition.
Open to all views on Iraq, or does W hear what he wants to hear?

You don't do all us Earls justice, sir.

ROFL, ROFL, ROFL, ROFL, ROFL -
I think this is one of the most amusing resignations of the Bush Administration yet. All his ladies are deserting him. With the appointment of Negroponte, who can doubt that Condi is going to have to do with her husb... ah the President next?

745 more days of this stuff - but then, who's counting?

Harriet walks warily down the street,
With the brim pulled way down low
Aint no sound but the sound of her feet,
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, Im gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
How do you think Im going to get along,
Without you, when youre gone
You took me for everything that I had,
And kicked me out on my own
Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
There are plenty of ways you can hurt a lady
And bring her to the ground
You can beat her
You can cheat her
You can treat her bad and leave
When shes down
But Im ready, yes Im ready for you
Im standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating the sound of the beat
