I have a story today in the Daily Press about Sen. Jim Webb, the Virginia Democrat, who will deliver the Democratic response tonight to President Bush's State of the Union address.
Just a year ago, Jim Webb was a best-selling author and former Navy secretary who was angry about the Iraq war.
Tonight, the newly elected Democratic senator from Virginia makes his debut on the national political stage to offer an alternative to President Bush’s agenda.
Tapped by congressional leaders to deliver the Democratic response to Bush’s State of the Union address, the freshman senator suddenly finds himself serving as a national spokesman for his party and a prominent voice of protest against the Iraq war... ``On balance, this has all been a very fast start,” Webb said Monday as he prepared for his prime-time address, which will be delivered from the U.S. Capitol immediately following Bush’s speech.

The Journal notes that last year Bush said of Iraq: "We are winning. ... As we make progress on the ground, and Iraqi forces increasingly take the lead, we should be able to further decrease our troop levels."

It's going to be simply sickening to watch the Republican chickhawk shills attack Webb's patriotism and his dedication to strong United States after the speech. The fact that he himself is a combat veteran, earned the Navy Cross, and that his son is serving in Iraq right now won't stop them. They have no shame.

Brother Dale,here's one more for the "Pro" soldier Repubs.Maybe Bush/Cheney needed the money for their "Surge".
Defense Department officials have laid off most of their case workers who help severely injured service members, sources said.
The case workers for the Military Severely Injured Center serve as advocates for wounded service members who have questions or issues related to benefits, financial resources and their successful return to duty or reintegration into civilian life — all forms of support other than medical care.
The center officially opened in February 2005, with its primary offices in Arlington, Va., but also hired advocates at hospitals around the country.

C Jim is not going to fire for effect he is going to open fire. This Vietnam Vet will speak the truth. But Watch the right wing claim he is a women hater because of remarks made 30 some years ago in a book. Ya right that's all they have.

I can't watch Dubya speak anymore. I can only stand so much of his BS and I reached my absolute limit back in 2002/2003 when he started talking about WMDs.
It'll be interested to hear what Webb has to say though. I'm looking forward to that.
