Reading through the news coverage of Barack Obama, Timothy Noah of the on-line magazine Slate finds evidence that the Illinois senator may be more than a mere Democratic presidential candidate. Perhaps, Noah wonders, Obama actually might be the Second Coming of the Messiah, the Savior of Mankind.
"His press coverage suggests we can't dismiss this possibility out of hand," Noah writes, in inaugurating his Obama Messiah Watch.
The feature will "periodically highlight gratuitously adoring biographical details that appear in newspaper, television, and magazine profiles of this otherworldly presence in our midst," Noah writes.
The first installment cites a Los Angeles Times profile of Obama's years at Occidental College. In the article, a former classmate describes an early sign of Obama's high intellect: how few notes the future presidential candidate took in class.

Ok Guys enough with the Obama Treads . Hell Bush's people thinks he walks on water so what.

Dorning, do you realize how sad Frank James is going to be that you beat him to the punch of comparing Obama to The Messiah? And can you imagine the jealousy welling up in Jeff Zeleny? Fawning, thy name is Libune.

...where can I get a small statue of Obama to put on the dashboard of my car?...

Dale,
Thanks for the update about Libby on the other thread. We do need a different topic other than Obama.

Jeff,
I think this post was written tounge-in-cheek, or maybe just to rile up the Obama haters around here.
Either way, try to find a sense of humor.

I think the Slate piece is written tongue-in-cheek, but if you have even a shallow curiousity in this blog you'd know that James, Zeleny, et al follow Obama around like little puppy dogs. And they don't go where they don't fawn.
Posted by: Jeff | February 8, 2007 2:06 PM
As Senator Obama becomes more popular, the media will have to run with 'humorous' articles making fun of his popularity. How dare the American people find a hero in public service!
Posted by: Paul | February 8, 2007 2:09 PM
Give me a break!! The second coming of the Messiah?!?!?! Is our loony left wing media that desperate? And, yes, I am SURE Frankie James took the rest of the day off so bothered that Mike Dorning got to post this latest LIBune Obama love affair story. Soon, following the Scum-Times's Lynne Sweet, we'll be seeing Mike, Frank, Mark Silva and Jeff Zeleny (where art thou, Jeff?) writing how they joined Barack's health club so they can see the senator naked in the men's locker room!! (Yo, Trib pick-and-choose censors, that last line is a JOKE -- I think?!?!)

Oh, for heaven's sake. You guys ought to know by now that the Swamp's right wingers don't do satire any better than they do nuance. This'll just be more red meat to go along with the Pelosi plane brouhaha. They're coming out of the woodwork already!

I now know Obama is the Messiah. I was having lunch with some friends,we all ordered fish and a loaf of bread.
The waiter told us there was only 1 fish and 1 loaf of bread left.
Obama was having lunch next to us with his pal, Tony Rezko, and over heard what the waiter told us.
Obama told the waiter to serve us and the waiter expressed his shortage of fish and bread again.
Do as I say,Obama commanded! The waiter came out with a basket that had one fish and one loaf of bread in it and showed it to Obama.
Feed them all,Obama said. The waiter gave one fish and one loaf to my friend and then there was another in the basket and another and another!!!
I asked the waiter for tarter sauce and he told me he's completely out of it....I looked to Obama for help and he told me,"I don't know how to do that....yet."

What is the RR going to say when they find out their Messiah is a black man with a funny soundin' middle name?

"President of the United States of America" ... Barack Hussein Obama? NO, I DON'T THINK SO.

"Could Obama Be The Messiah" - YES!
Please save us from the tragedy that Republican President Rambo and his sidekick Deadeye Cheney have laid at America's doorstep, Mr. Obama.
OBAMA IN 08 !

Eureka! Now I understand why the same Hardcore Obama Haters follow his stories with what could characterized as religious zeal. You HOHs suffer from Pavlov's Syndrome. That is, the split second you see an article about Obama, you start salivating uncontrollably, like the first time you wet your whistle. While--at the same time--the tiny wheels in your tabula rasa cranium start churning furiously like a hamster's legs on a treadmill; trying your best to think of something "enlightening" to post. Then you wait...And wait. Pouncing on the refresh button and moaning, "What's taking these blog-blockers so long...? Finally your little gems of wisdom appear: "Ahhhh! Hating on Obama feels so damn GOOD! Oh boy! Here comes another juicy BO article..."
Peace, and continued pleasure!

Timothy Noah started his "Obama is the Messiah" "watch" 10 days ago, to the amusement of people like myself. The "Swamp" is right on top of things, as usual.
Evidently, even the Lefties at Slate think the Obama media coverage is over-the-top fawning.
Posted by: Bruce | February 8, 2007 5:36 PM
The media just wants a democratic candidate that is either half black/half white or half woman/half man. They like to take progression slowly.
Posted by: Brad | February 8, 2007 6:48 PM
It's hilarious that a couple of the Left's Obamaniacs don't realize that this is tongue-in-cheek and only for laughs.
My guess is that Dorning wanted to bait and embarass the Right wing loonies who wouldn't get the sarcasm, and he caught a couple of lefties in the process!
PS to Rus Styles: You're one of the better posters here, so I'm surprised I have to point this out:
Don't you think that "BO" is an unfortunate choice of abreviations?
Posted by: Leo T | February 8, 2007 7:15 PM
Sure would be a nice turn of events, and I've met him so maybe that will help get in the pearly gates!!!

Leo, C'mon...You know I'm just having a lil chain-pullin'fun with my fellow bloglodytes. No, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck and lost my common-sense. But, I appreciate your props...

Leo, C'mon...You know I'm just having a lil chain-pullin'fun with my fellow RW bloglodytes. No, I didn't just fall off the turnip truck; my common-sense is intact. But hey, I appreciate your props...
PS: Yea, prior to Biden's assurances that BO was indeed "clean", those initials might be cause for concern. Although, I must admit, it does lack ring appeal. Well, while I'm dreaming about Obama tonight, my subconccious will come up with something snazzy.
Posted by: Rus Styles | February 8, 2007 8:39 PM
this blog while written to be humorous, has just unconciously made a big leap of fear to attack the psyche of the obama supporter via their faith and belief in his/their dreams. just trying in basic terms to hop on the bandwagon of oppression and ultimately racism or some other class related prejudice. imagine being that guy joking about martin luther king jr. or gandhi or jesus or buddha.. why even stand on that side of the fence?
essentially your humor is weak and transparent as your fear is rank.

Could Obama be the Messiah? That's blasphemy! Why everyone knows that George W. Bush is the one and true son of god.
Posted by: Lou Kaye | February 8, 2007 10:42 PM
Rus Styles your Pavlov's Syndrome post is the kind of post that keeps me coming back for more!!! Thanks. Very funny and...very true.

Blasphemy! Everyone knows that the true Messiah is Oprah. And the Anti-Christ is, of course, Bush.
Quickly, on your knees, hold your remote, and pray: "Hail Oprah, Full of Grace, Thy Marketing Power is with Thee . . ."
Thank [non-offensive progressive diverse spiritual being] that we have the Big Media to explain this to us. What ever would be do without them?
Posted by: Robert Howell | February 9, 2007 7:24 AM
There's more to this than you think. I've seen some very underground email forwards that suggest that Obama is the anti-christ. The whole cohort that's going on and on about his Arabic middle name are using that as proof of evidence of the end times. It's going to get really nasty, folks.

I have a new candidate for the Obama "Messah Watch"--the article in today's Tribune Tempo section by Patrick Reardon and Nara Schoenberg. Titled "Great Expectations", it breathelssly reports how Obama's anticipated announcement is "eagerly anticipated" (by who, except Tribune reporters?) and manages to associate Obama's name with pictures of George Washington, FDR, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan. It then proclaims that Obama "is wrapping himself in the mystique of Abraham Lincoln".
Laughably pathetic, and typically Tribune.

Well Leo, after experiencing multiple Obama-isms last night :), here are 10 sobriquets that were deleriously emoted each time...Take your pick:
O'Barry-O (Hmmm, may sound too white? But he is half Irish.)
Senator Bam-Bam (He comports too much "soigne" for this cartoonish moniker)
OB-Wan (Nah, G. Lucas might file a lawsuit)
OB-Wanna-B-Pres (Oh no, Americans are too bz to say this much)
Ba-Husba! (Sounds a lil too Jewish?)
LL Cool-B (LL= Lincoln-Like)
Kunta-Bama (Would have worked well during Lincoln times.)
Soul Bama (Passe. Perfect for the Afro-70's)
Barama (Timeless. And, rolls effortlessly off the tongue, huh?)
Your welcome...
PS: Buddha...You need to rub those little beads, chant and relax--Ommmmmm...

Bruce:
I'd climb Mt Everest, naked--just need my Olympus 5.0 digital camera-- during a sub-zero blinding blizzard to see, and take a picture of your burgandy face after Obama devours whatever Great White Dope, oops, sorry...I meant Hope, the republican party throws into the Lion's Den...
Posted by: Rus Styles | February 9, 2007 9:25 AM
Wow, this discussion is proof positive that right wingers cannot grasp humor or satire. This is actually somewhat disturbing.

Bruce, that should tell you something. Americans have lost all hope thanks to G.W. or is that T.O???
Team obliterator!!! Bruce thinking people long for a return to sanity in the White House. Ya dig!

Now, if Obama is in fact the messiah, will Tony Rezko be his Judas in his upcoming trial?
Posted by: Sam Adams | February 9, 2007 11:30 AM
It's true. As of yesterday, I joined the church of Obama. We call ourselves the Obama Nation!

Obama is a wolf dressed in sheeps clothing. Beware!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Dave Noel | February 9, 2007 1:20 PM
I hear the faint squealing of irrational fear--the father of bigotry--dressed blithely as concern... Keep the Al-Queda "plant" theories flowing, there so blatantly far-fetched it shows both the level of desperation and depravity by the HOHs/PWF (Plutonian Wing Fundamentalists)
Posted by: Rus Styles | February 9, 2007 2:40 PM
Nice work guys! - obviously the radical right loves to create this "Messiah" stuff to make any well-respected public figures that threaten their shallow mind-set look "odd" or "different". One look at all of these responses makes it look like they've done their job well. They've been doing it for the last 50 years! Ok - here's one for you - I have it from "reliable" sources that George W. sleeps with his toy horse "Fella" in his cowboy jammies every night.

Obama is a left-wing socialist. Look at his voting record. He is dangerous to America and what we stand for. What a joke, the next Messiah? He is a product of the left-wing press.

I've prayed that the LORD JESUS CHRIST and God Almighty may forgive you all for mocking and defiling HIS RETURN for the sake of your pathetic, unholy media refuse.

I'm with the "group" who are watching him for signs of Anti-Christ. He is rising to power very quickly! People are strangely facinated with him for no apparent reason.

Has anyone noticed that the "Christ" face on the Shroud of Turin looks a hell of a lot like Osama bin Ladin? And Barack Obama looks a hell of a lot like Bosko?
