It’s not often that a senior member of a president’s cabinet, whether it be the Bush Administration or any other, thanks journalists for exposing shameful problems within the government agency he runs.

But that’s what happened today at Defense Secretary Robert Gates press conference at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

This week, the nation, including Gates, the White House and top military brass, learned through a Washington Post series about the tribulations of some injured soldiers at that facility, all outpatients, who’ve been subjected to bureaucratic difficulties and in some instances poor living conditions.

Gates said:

“I'm grateful to reporters for bringing this problem to our attention, but very disappointed we did not identify it ourselves. Our nation is truly blessed that so many talented and patriotic young people have stepped forward to serve. The men and women recovering at Walter Reed and at other military hospitals have put their lives on the line and paid a considerable price for defending our country. They should not have to recuperate in substandard housing, nor should they be expected to tackle mountains of paperwork and bureaucratic processes during this difficult period for themselves and for their families. They battled our foreign enemies. They should not have to battle an American bureaucracy.”

Later during the press conference, Gates was asked about a comment made by Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley, head of the Army Medical Command, who told reporters yesterday “I'm not sure it was an accurate representation. It was a one-sided representation."

In reaction, Gates said this:

All I can tell you is that I read the articles on Sunday and Monday, and I was upset by them. And I have not seen anything or heard anything in the time since then to lead me to believe that those articles were in any substantial way wrong.

These are gloomy days for American journalism for a number of reasons I don’t need to get into here. But Gates’s message, as well as the positive impact the Post stories should have on real people, is a reminder of the good the mainstream media often does and why many of us in this business remain proud of it, despite the abuse we get from people who deride the MSM.

Most of us, as young journalists, learned a simple credo: “Afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.” The Post series lived up to the highest ideals contained in those words.

And it was refreshing to hear from a high government official who understood that when journalists report bad news about something on an administration’s watch, the response doesn't always have to be one of defensiveness and spin.

Such reports can present an opportunity for government openess and accountabililty, a chance for government to publicly vow to right what's wrong. Today was such an opportunity and Gates grasped it.

Dale Peters,

You'll be pleased to hear that something's getting done and the ladies who reported it are on the fast track to Pulitzers.

Keep slugging it out....

I'm waiting for the pro-war Republicans who let these pi** poor hospital conditions for our troops happen under their watch in Congress and the Whitehouse and claim to be the only one's who "support" the troops, to spin this as the Democrats fault.

I've got news for the Wingnuts, America has learned from the time that Republicans blamed the Dems for "losing" the Vietnam war by pulling out.
Turns out that Vietnam wasn't a winnable situation either.

Iraq is the Republicans baby, always has been, always will be.

Your daddy's bleeding heart liberal's don't exist anymore and you can thank KKKarl Rove for that Repubs...meet the new guys on the block and don't worry we are only more than happy to fight you.

Gates seems like a class act.

Now if Bush's Dad could just get rid of Cheney and replace him with, oh, maybe Colin Powell.

Then, get rid of Condi and replace her with Brent Scowcroft.

Then, he might as well send the Chimp back to Texas and take over the top job himself.

Then, the second Bush Administration could end on a note of sanity.

(Just kidding: We all know the Christian Taliban would never stand for it.)

Now let's have a follow up every month to see what Gates does about it.

I think it is pitiful that people who work at these hospitals around the nation did not speak out sooner and that it took reporters to bring such shameful treatment to light.

Bless our soldiers and their families in these situations and get the rest on them home.

Lt. Gen. Kiley demonstrated what defensiveness and spin are.As head of the Army Medical Command he is the person responsible. What are the odds against him getting an extra star and a comfortable retirement? These General Officers take care of each other. Name an officer that has paid for any Iraq disaster.

Guys this is not over. There is a Bill going to the floor calling for all VA and Military Hospitals to be check by IG. We know of a least 7 places just like Walter Reed mostly clinics but twi Hospitals out west.

Worth repeating:Republics like to send our soldiers to war to die and get maimed, then want nothing to do with them.

Just like Roe V Wade, all BS and no action for all the years they had control.

Voting for Republics is just what PT Barnum said............

I'm waiting for the pro-war Republicans who let these pi** poor hospital conditions for our troops happen under their watch in Congress and the Whitehouse and claim to be the only one's who "support" the troops, to spin this as the Democrats fault.

John E. The problem is the democratic workers who are in charge of keeping the facility clean are just plain lazy,,,so what's new about that ?

Look, it's good that the administration is glad for the expose (if that part is true). Much better if the expose had said that the administration had already detected the deficiencies -- myriad as they are -- and that noticeable progress had already been made in correcting them. Best of all if the investigation had reavealed a healthy system and state-of-the-art facilities in the first fri**ing place.

The pattern of this administration to be so firmly in control of so many systems that just plain don't work, haven't worked, and aren't even close to getting any better is nauseating. The ONLY good news here is that these people can't and won't be re-elected, so whoever comes next CAN'T be as bad. All we have to do now is to allow the soldiers who are giving their blood, their limbs, their health and their sanity to exist in the hellholes the administration has built for them for another two years. Hopefully the ones who are a bit healthier can keep the rats and roaches away from the less-healthy ones. TERRIFIIC job of supporting the troops, huh?

Good for Gates.

Kenny, I wouldn't be congratulating Dale Peters too much. Apparently many veterans organizations have just as big a problem with him as they do with the conditions at Walter Reed.

Leave it to a Yuppie Young Republican like Billy/Jeff to take pot shots at a Vietnam Veteran like Dale Peters.

Jeffy/Bill,..leave us links that aren't from wingnut web sites like the freerepublic and redstate.com.

We already know that like minded Wingnuts like you are out there.

Jeff,

Does that link look sane to you? No thanks, character assassination isn't my thing. Too bad many now consider it a valid form of debate -- it's not.

No need for debate on this story. We can all agree that progress in cleaning up Walter Reed is a good thing.

Very nice Jeff Free Republic give me a break swift boaters . You now just showed who and what you are. Yes they went after me why because I sent Convoy's to defeat the Republican Party My DD 214 is with VVA Veterans For America and others. I was vested by all real Veterans Groups last word on that subject. I work and help Veterans what do you do talk. I got the First Marine 100% PTSD Home from Iraq.

John E, what a truly sad commentary you offer: "Blame the workers, not the management that allowed this to happen."

You probably blame Ford workers for the Pinto instead of putting it right where it belongs: on the engineers who did a bad job designing the car, and the management that learned of the problems and did nothing for years because they felt dead people cost less than fixing the problem.

John E., read the substance and don't just judge a book by its cover. I realize reading more than three or so lines of slanted, biased posts is tough for you but check out the substance instead of just attacking the messenger.

If you did you'd realize that Dale Peters very likely doesnt' exist. In fact since you're fond of accusing me of posting under a different name (one I dont' know), I wouldn't at all be surprised if you were Dale Peters. You and Raving Loon show the lack of reading comprehension and inability to post more than three sentences of "hooray for our side" posts that you could very well be one and the same.

I'll bet that "Dale" is one of your little inventions. So sorry that someone caught you redhanded.

p.s. John E., weren't you getting redeployed to Iraq in January? Are you posting from Anbar province. Oh, right, Mom's basement. Got it.

Here you go, John E., just for you, DailyKos on the Dale Peters situation. Lefty enough for you? Notice they came to the same conclusion as FreeP?"
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/1/15/9311/84467
The level of deception here is repugnant.

Good Lord, it just gets worse. John E., this one's not as Lefty as DailyKos (where Dale has no friends) but this is another sufficiently non-FreeP site for you.

"Troopers..(and Nelly)...I have researched all of the Nam era LRP/LRRP databases I have access to...Being Secretary of E20-C75th Ranger does have some perks...which is ALL of them....Dale Peters IS NOT LISTED on any Roster....He damn sure was not one of Gen Westies' boys..."

Pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

John E., if you don't read the entire DailyKos saga, at the very least read this excerpted part:

"Dale has a long history of trolling other military and veterans' sites (read the UPDATE and follow its links to military.net and others) with bogus tales of a wounded vet son and other stories that got him busted as a fraud by actual US veterans. The fraud on those other sites showed that Dale was into sockpuppetry and fake emails, etc."

"Dale was banned here by Kos for plagiarism/fraud; "Janet G" surfaced soon afterward with a similar writing style..."

And on the subject of outing so called "veterans":

John E, you were telling everybody last autumn that you were shipping out to Iraq in February. So, GI Joe, are you posting all day, every day from Baghdad? Or is it still your mom's basement?

I'm happy to hear that Defense Secretary Robert Gates accepts accountabililty. He seems allot better than his predecessor.

John E you don't have to defend me I have my DD214 And thanks to Jeff's link my lawyers can go and just might shut down that sight. See the day they did that I laid my wife to rest. You know the one they claimed wasn't real even with her obit in this paper. Jeff don't ever leave a post with my name in it again And I will do like wise You and done to me

So why did DailyKos come to the same conclusion then?

Everybody,

When you go to the DailyKos site, take plenty of time and be sure to follow all of the links. The details of this really get creepy.

So, Dale (WHAT'S YOUR MOS!!!) Peters is a fake.

Never would have seen that one coming...

Leo's right. It's a complicated story and the DKos link follows every lead to its complete conclusion. It's a really, really creepy hoax. A special thanks to Quiksilver at DKos for his very thorough investigation.

Jeffry/Bill, I'm still in the IRR,turns out W. and McCain's "surge" wasn't as big as they wanted it to be and I can't say that I'm surprised.

That's the last time I will defend my DD214 to a Yuppie Young Republican Chickenhawk like you Bill.

Leo, you get no response from me because I know who you really are and I have never bitten on your new idenity like others on here have.

Just because people say things about Dale P. doesn't mean they're true.
I listen to mental midgets like JohnD/Leo and Paulo try to rewrite my history everyday, give it a rest on Dale P. you loser wingnuts......can't you find a better way to win an argumeny than to keep doing the "Swiftboat" thing over and over??

Speaking of "Swiftboat",I see that John McSurge has hired KKKarl Rove's top "swiftboater",Mr.Terry,to lie and distort for his campaign....what a swell guy that Angry Old McCain is.

Billy/Jeff,
I'm not buying your bull about Dale Peters.

"Quicksilver"??? is this guy supposed to be some reputable journalist??

For all any of us know it could be another one of Leo T's alias's.

P.S. I'm glad to see that Republican war hero Surge McCain has been so outspoken about the poor conditions of the hospitals that our wounded troops have been staying at......come to think of it..........he's said NOTHING about it,...oh well,he agreed with W. that we should torture prisoners of war,so what else would you expect from a guy who finished 895th out of 900 in his class at Annapolis.

I never said Quiksilver was a journalist, I said he did a thorough investigation. Last time I checked there was no licensing of journalists, or in this case, a person who thoroughly looked at the facts from all sides.

I know John E., that's only four places higher than you.

p.s. Would you have followed Henry V at Agincourt? What with the public knowledge of his misspent youth? I'm glad McCain had a truly joyful youth because those memories, as he wrote in "Faith of My Fathers" were one of the few things that sustained him during the three years of vicious beatings he suffered for you and every American.

Jeff-

Every time you remind us that MCacin was tortured in Vietnam, I will remind you that he has not had the courage to stand up to this administrations torture policy. He voted for Graham-Levin and the Military Commissions Act.

He is either a hypocrite or a coward. Take your pick.

People have spoken out, thats why they hire private contractors, gotta meet numbers on contract.

All Va & Military hospitals must be investigated. Vets go home to local VA & Mil hospitals if Walter Reed is the "Crown jewel" in medical care the rest must the " Mayo Clinic".

I have worked VA & Mil hospitals, now retired. I had two days to train a temporary replacement. Years of experience not used properly.

Stop looking for blame. Fix the damn problem.
Current regulations should be thrown out and begin anew. Hiring, medical care, paper-work & training.
