The Swamp

Why do many people take such delight in beating up on Al Gore?

The question is hard to answer. All I know is it seems to be a source of enormous enjoyment for many people. Perhaps it has to do something with the former vice president's wonderfully earnest qualities.

Take the story that the Associated Press spread around the country Tuesday. It seems that a conservative group figured out that Gore's Nashville 10,000-square foot mansion used more than 12 times the amount of electricity than the typical household in the city.

"He's not doing enough in his own home to be going around telling other people how to reduce consumption," said Drew Johnson, president of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, identified by the AP as a think tank that pushes conservative causes.

But wait! The star of "An Inconvenient Truth," the academy award-winning documentary in which Gore warns of incipient global warming, had an explanation. He only uses only "green power."

In other words, his power is different from electricity going in many other Nashville homes. A Gore spokeswoman, Kalee Kreider, said the former vice president pays $432 a month for 108 blocks of "green power" at $4 a block. That's enough to pay for 16,200 kilowatt hours a green power each month.

Also, the Gore home is under renovation to add solar panels. He has said that he leads a "carbon-neutral" lifestyle, meaning that he invests in projects to reduce energy consumption around the globe.

Let's go back to the "green power" idea for a moment. It means that Gore is paying the utility extra money for some of the electricity that it purchases from clean-energy sources, such as wind or methane.

When I covered a wind-power project controversy in West Virginia last year, I learned that much of the energy to be generated by the wind turbines would be sold and put on the electrical grid. It most likely be used in other states, I was told.

But electricity is electricity, just like money is fungible. You can say you are using "clean" energy by paying extra, but what you are using may actually be generated by a coal-fired plant somewhere else. But it's fair to say that wealthier people are providing investment capital for renewable energy, which is sold at a premium to people like Gore.

If you happen to be poor, of course, you are more likely to be using "dirty electricity," since you can't afford to buy these costly green-power blocks, even if you are using the same power they are. (Oh, by the way, the federal government provides generous "production" tax credits to firms that create wind power for the very wealthy people who can afford it. In a sense, the middle-class taxpayer is subsidizing "wealthy" electricity).

As for Gore's move to offset his high use of energy by investing in renewable energy sources, Johnson wasn't convinced. "In general, I applaud his efforts to reduce energy consumption, but if he is going to be a spokesman for global warming, he has to be willing to make the same sacrifices."

Not to beat up on Al Gore, but he has the means to buy green power, and that's a good thing. Not everyone with his affluence bothers. It's good that he has an environmental conscience. It would be unfair to ask that he live in a smaller house, or sell one of the three he owns. After all, he's Al Gore. He's carbon-neutral.

Most people with bucks probably don't bother spending it being Green.

So Gore is carbon neutral... if more people went through life making a conscious effort to at least do no harm, the world would be a lot better off.

Heavens, more than 80 private jets with waiting limos were in LaLa Land Sunday for the Oscars. Al Gore flies all over the place -- in private jets. More private jets in the air means more exhaust, and according to these folks, more global warming gases. Al Gore has multiple big homes. John Edwards has a home bigger than Rhode Island. The Hollywood folk who tell us to save energy, fly private, have multiple cars (including SUVs, Hummers, speedy, gas-guzzling sports cars), have big homes for one or maybe two people, have their lawns manicured weekly, if not more often (yet, on oscar.com, they tell us to let the grass grow longer), and on and on. And when was the last time some Hollywood celebrity took a bus to work? Well, they can't be bothered, we're told.

You know what, if you're going to dictate to the world what it should do, then walk the walk. Lead by example. Make sacrifices Al and Hollywood!!

"Lead by example. Make sacrifices "

You mean like all the personal sacrifices the Republican leadership have made for the War in Iraq?

From Breitbart online, the details the above article doesn't give:

"...The next day [afer the Oscars], the Tennessee Center for Policy Research issued a statement saying Gore was not doing enough to reduce his own electricity consumption. The group disputes that global warming is a serious problem.

"We wanted to see if he was living by his own recommendations and walking the walk," said think tank president Drew Johnson.

Utility records show the Gore family paid an average monthly electric bill of about $1,200 last year for its 10,000-square-foot home.

The Gores used about 191,000 kilowatt hours in 2006, according to bills reviewed by The Associated Press. The typical Nashville household uses about 15,600 kilowatt-hours per year.

The group said that Gore used nearly 221,000 kilowatt hours last year and that his average monthly electric bill was $1,359. Johnson said his group got its figures from Nashville Electric Service...."

And that's just for Gore's Nashville home. No mention of his other homes in Carthage and Washington D.C.

Gore and that other zillionaire turned climatology expert, Leonardo DeCaprio, need to practice what they preach. And all those celebreties at the Oscars applauding Al--how many of them took buses to get there?

Tony, not that makes any difference, but there are a couple of Republican Congressmen who do have sons in the military and in Iraq.

Stop with the ignorant talking points and enter the world of reality.

Johnny D-

How many Republican Congressmen have served in Iraq themselves?

I still don't understand how these global warming people can say the the coast lines of America would get flooded with waves 8-16 feet high if the glaciers melt?
If they melted, the area and the mass would still be the same...
If you have a glass filled with water and ice and the ice melts, does the glass overflow? No,because the area and mass of the ice are replaced.
It's the same...right?
Paulo

Bruce,

Do you ever check your resources, or do you just repeat whatever you hear that sounds good to you? Did you check into just WHO is this Tennessee Center for Policy Research? Is it a bona fide organization?

http://www.seeingtheforest.com/archives/2007/02/a_far_too_conve.htm

And shame on the Tribune for jumping on the wagon today and publishing this stupid swift boat story without investigating it. The whole story is itself just a puff of methane, if you catch my drift.

If by "a couple" you mean two, then that leaves 199 Republican Congressmen who can help lead by example. Not to mention our commander-in-chief.

Bruce:

Thank you for the line that absolutely shows the ignorance of this "think tank":

"The group disputes that global warming is a serious problem."

Enough said.

Glad to see the picky, picky attacks on Al Gore. The wing nuts are right to be fearful. Al Gore will be the winner again. The media feels guilty about all the lies and half truths they passed on about him so it will be difficult to"swift boat" him this time. There is also the fact that he was right about the war and the aftermath.

Paulo-

The antarctic ice sheet, and the greenland ice sheet rest on land, not in the ocean. When they melt, that water will be added to the ocean, raising the level.

Critical thinking really isn't your thing, is it?

I think this just points out the problem so many people have with those who tell us all how we should live our lives but then don't practice what they preach.

Kalee Kreider, a spokesperson for the Gores, did not dispute the Center's figures, taken as they were from public records. But she pointed out that both Al and Tipper Gore work out of their home and she argued that "the bottom line is that every family has a different carbon footprint. And what Vice President Gore has asked is for families to calculate that footprint and take steps to reduce and offset it."

For those of you who do not like the meesenger, here's the message: Undisputed by the Gore spokesperson, seeing the figures were taken from "public records". I know Tony, you don't under-
stand this... This taken from the very conservative ABC news

I could live with Gore for president - but he is a hypocrite on this issue - period. These are not ticky tack attacks - they are logical supportable attacks - anyone who supports democrats and says these attacks are off limits is simply an incredibly huge hypocrite themselves - they won't even let a congressman tell a dying 96 year old man you would have made a good president without vicious attacks -- if someone found out dan quayle used this much more than the national average of killowatts for his household and then said he was an environmentalist, the dems would be using these exact same figures to attack him

more to the point, the hollywood and washington elitists that fly around on their private jets - do not leave footprints - they leave craters - and they do not have the moral high ground on any of these issues - they are elitists in favor of a permament oligarchy with them in charge (as are many American politicians - truth be known)

tell me someone in the 21st century who does not have a home office - everyone does - that is NOT a mitigating factor

(and I bet the Gores have other offices they use anyway)

No one is disputing those facts Donny. No One.

However, you keep ignoring that the Gores are spending a siginificant anount of extra money each year to purchase blocks of renewable energy to balance out their usage.

Don B,
What is your point? Do you not understand he has a large home with 2 offices w/ full staffs within the home and he is paying extra money to buy power generated by renewable sources?

tom,
Trent Lott said the world would be a better place if they had listened to Stom Thurmonds ideas. You better make yourself clear. Do you think we would be better of w/ seperate but equal facilities and segregation? Do you long for bathrooms that say Whites Only?

Fellow Republicans, your glory has already waned. DOW just fell 416 pts yesterday, thank God, it recovered this morning. It's not over yet, real estate foreclosures will be coming soon, majority of the policies of this Bush Administration did in the last 6 years were failures including immigration. In the 2000 Election, Gore gave way to Bush and the latter has enjoyed 7 and going 8 years in office. Now let's give Al Gore a chance, if the world accepted Al Gore, why not us? fellow Americans, let's avoid partisan politics and save the world from global catastrophe.

Join the movement in endorsing Al Gore as the next President of the United States (like late Richard Nixon in 1970.)

Just in case Gore changes his mind and decides to run for president the dirty tricksters are afoot. Apparently someone is so concerned about Gore's resurgence of popularity, that it has been necessary to pretend that he wastes more energy than anyone. I imagine that if some lazy reporter did some investigative work on the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, it would lead to the Energy industry or some other interested party.
I was unaware that anyone could access someone else's utility bills. It certainly wasn't true according to Peoples Energy here in Illinois about three years ago. I could not schedule a meter reading in an unoccupied house by Peoples because I was not the person named on the bill. I was told it was because of stringent security measures for HLS. Maybe someone who works for a public utility could explain how someone's private bills can become a matter of public record.
As far as Gore's alleged hypocracy-I don't think he has ever said that people should burn candles for light. He is for pushing energy alternatives and conservation.

Jethro - I'm an overweight doctor - when I tell people they need to lose weight , I am right - 100% right -- but I am still a hypocrite -- if I listened more to my own advice more patients would probably listen to me

you are making a lame excuse for some of these ultra-rich who feel guilty about being the real reason our country uses up so much of our natural resources - sure they use excuses and try to buy themselves some absolution by giving a little bit back - but for the most part, they are takers not givers - just think about how the Gore family got rich in the first place (before they made a killing on google stock - they had large sums of money to invest - lots and lots of money - tobacco money)

back to work

p.s. -- sent some dittos to you on the Iraq war strand and answered a question of yours on the other Gore strand

Jethro: my postings were for the doubting Thomas' who mentioned something about info. came from conservative think tanks hence
did not believe story, including Tony yesterday, Also, because Mr. Gore pays extra, doesn't mean it's always so called "green power".
Because one pays extra taxes for a gas guzzler, but uses an inordinate amount of gas doesn't make that person "green"

John D,

You make the claim that Al Gore jets from place to place on private jets. As you have seemingly pulled this fact out of a hat, I'd like to inform you that Gore travels to make his global warming speeches commercially.

And as for this Gore home nonsense, this much is clear - right wingers do not have the facts to refute the message so all they have left is to smear the messanger. Gore pays extra to make sure the energy his home gets is clean and renewable. Yet another right-wing smear de-bunked.

NEXT!

yes, but janet he said it at a freaking birthday party - granted -- it was a stupid thing to say and worthy of the apology that he gave BUT he was trying to pay a compliment to a dying man and thus considering the ACTUAL context of the remarks, the attacks were somewhat valid BUT much more ticky tack than this Gore issue

but my point is simple and CORRECT and unapologetic -- GORE left himself wide open for this perfectly fair attack -- just like I do by not losing weight and telling my patients they need to --

if I had a heated pool like Gore, I would probably be in better shape than he is but alas we do have similar silhouettes

I could have used any of dozens of other examples demonstrating that had the shoe been on the other foot, democrats would be making similar or louder attacks on any republican who used so much more than the local average in terms of Kilowatts -- especially if the republican was a so-called environmentalist - so it is utterly hypocritical of democrats to say these attacks on Gore are unfair

I like Gore - but he is not being "swift-boated" (if there really is such a phenomenon seeing how Goldwater was "daisied" 40 years ago) -

Gore has stock in these companies that promote green energy and he does quote junk science in order to promote these products

but the hypocrisy of the democrats who rush to attack those who raise these questions and defend the indefensible is palpable

that's why I am an independent

p.s. - I bet you will not hear republican candidates attack Gore's power bill because it will draw attention to their own

and while we write back and forth here, thousands of democrats who love Hillary are looking up Obama's and Guliani's power bill records (but they won't be able to go public until Hillary is ready to do damage control on her own "carbon footprint" which is likely to be much worse than Gore's)

Ha! All you left-wing nuts can't stand that Al Gore's hypocrisy is being exposed. Just another liberal inconvenient truth.

You Loony Lefters, bring on Al Bore!! If you folks truly believe he is your party's savior (I thought it was Hillary, or Barack, or Edwards? -- lol --), then by all means have Al run again. I cannot wait to see the Giuliani inauguration in 2009. Mitch McConnell become Senate majority leader and John Boehner become Speaker of the House!! Boy, oh, boy, 2008 is looking like a banner year for the GOP!!!

The Republican plan for Iraq: 1) Talk about Al Gore's electric bill, 2) Talk about Anna Nicole or anything other Iraq.

Ah, jethro, it aint the Republicans focused on Anna Nicole. In fact, I know of no Republican interested in that story or spectacle or whatever it's supposed to be. Now the left-wing loons in the media, they can't get enough of Anna Nicole (and for added measure, when a segment on a Fox News show talks about Anna, I channel surf, turn TV off, do anything but watch!).

OK jethro - I respect a lot of what you say but how do the republicans have anything to do with anna nicolle ???

I gotta hear this

the truth is the republicans do talk frequently about Iraq -- but talk is cheap

the other truth is Gore practically invited this attack on himself and it is a perfectly fair attack

something else I want to hear ..... how does Gore do this monkey math when he says he is carbon neutral -- he uses how many kilowatts ?? if anything less than 100% of that is nonrenuable, then he could not possibly be carbon neutral unless he is himself somehow creating an equal or greater amount of renuable energy that he gives away for free -- monkey math ! but I would like to see the numbers for fun

don't forget, I like Gore - he's a hypocrite (like me) but not nearly as big as Cheney or Hillary (I put him roughly an equal to dubya in hypocrisy - a little more or less)

signed - darn glad to be an independent

Just plain awesome.

tom,
I never said Republicans had anything to do with Anna Nicole. I said the party will go to any length to talk about any other subject rather than address the debacle in Iraq. There is even an article on the Swamp about how no one supporting the surge came onto Sunday talk shows to talk about Iraq. Yet there are more than enough posts about Al Gore showing the Republic Parties inability to understand what carbon neutral means.

You state that Al Gore has the affluence to buy green power. You imply that those who aren’t wealthy “can't afford to buy these costly green-power blocks,” and you state that “the middle-class taxpayer is subsidizing `wealthy’ electricity.” Al Gore may choose to pay $432 (your figure) a month for electricity from renewable sources, but that in no way means that the rest of us need to venture into that price range. The typical American home requires 6 “blocks” of electricity per month on average (blocks are 100 kilowatt hours), and that power is available to us here in northern Illinois for $2.50 per block. That premium amount goes to pay the cost differential between conventionally generated electricity and the higher cost of wind-generated electricity, allowing the wind farm that generates the electricity to operate cost effectively. Here in northern Illinois, that wind farm is the ComEd-Community Energy Wind Farm at Crescent Ridge, located in Bureau County, Illinois. Therefore, most of us can effectively switch to wind-powered electric usage in our homes for an additional $15 per month. I have done so, and I guarantee you that neither I nor my family could remotely be considered wealthy. Certainly some people cannot afford even this much extra per month (especially on top of the recent unfreezing of electric rates), but anyone considered middle-class can if they consider it important enough. The more ComEd customers in northern Illinois who purchase these wind certificates, the more wind farms ComEd and others can bring online in Illinois. That means cleaner air for us and a more secure energy future with more stable costs for everyone.

jethro -- as I agreed with you on another topic yesterday - I do not agree with republican policy on Iraq - but I don't think they (Bush, at least) are running away from the topic -- but I was joking with you about Anna Nicolle because she has nothing to do with anything -- the hype over Anna is just a clear example of how the press tries to make stories out of nothing - I'm sick of the whole thing

but while we are at it -- what exactly is your definition of carbon neutral ??

(just a reminder - FYI - I am not a repo or demo)

oops - jethro in rereading my 233 posting - I said if anything less thatn 100% of the energy he (or anyone) uses is nonrenuable then you can't be carbon neutral -- of course, I meant to use the word renuable instead

at any rate I await your definition - seriously I do respect your opinion on this - all kidding aside

I will say something that is very controversial to Republicans. Al Gore will be the savior of the Republican Party debacle for the last two terms of Pres. Bush. He may be representing the democrats but Republicans do not want to be known as the party that:

1. Started the 3rd World War

2. Snobbed the warnings on Global Warming

3. Started the meltdown of American dominance in the world of finance due to continuous fall of dollar against major currencies, unfavorable balance of trade against Asian Tiger Economies

4. Uncotrolled influx of illegal immigration of poor people in the Southe desperate to come to America while emigration of jobs continues to happen to the lowest bidders

In the end, every American would blame anything Republican, even if this is the party that made solid promises for the good of family like going against abortion a crime against the unborn child, less taxes, being religious, less government. Americans will turn away from all these good policies in the past and will only remember that the party of Lincoln bankrupt every economic household and warmonger politicians started the nuclear winter. Let's give Al Gore a chance to become President in this blog. Campaign with us and get to his website DraftGore.com

When I see Mr. Gore riding public transporation daily, then I might think he is serious.

Tony,

It would be hard to be a congressman and serve in Iraq at the same time. However, Republican Congressman Kirk of Illinois 10th district has had his reserve unit called up and has had to leave his congressional duties.

If I had the Gore's money, I might be able to spend money on inefficient renewable energy, but I, like most Americans, have better things to do with our money.

As far as leadership. When the democrats force gov't employees to start paying into the faulty Social Security system, that would be leadership. How about when they take away some of the accelrated write-off tax schedules for Hollywood? How about a tax on movies that would go to fund educations, think of the money that could be raised if each movie ticket was taxed say $5.00. Doesn't that sound like a good idea?

Jeff C,

Since it is a volunteer military and you need to be 18 to be a volunteer, no Congressman - or any parent - could force their child to join the military. It is the choice of the Congressman's child not the Congressman.

Jethro,

He has three homes, three very large homes. It was your left wing Mr Newkirk that posted this story.

I agree with Al Gore on most political matters, except NAFTA, but find him to be typical of most wealthy people. I live in Jackson Hole, Wy., where many of the world's most wealthy people own huge, energy-hogging homes. Some have and use two or more homes right here. Lots of these folks like to talk the green talk. They're in love with the word "sustainability." They attend conferences on environmental, development and energy issues. Those of us who work for a living and live on a budget find these folks endlessly entertaining. They advocate living green, as long as they don't have to. What's perhaps most ironic is how some brag about "building green." When the building is 8,000 square feet for one or two people, and you have several others just as big, does it really matter how "green" the structure is?
Regarding buying energy or carbon credits — which can be called penance for the rich — it's the height of hyprocracy and greed. As is so often the case, the rich simply buy their way out of undesirable situations and into socially "respectable" ones.
Again, I like and respect Al Gore, especially for his recent efforts. But, frankly, I'm not real enthusiastic about continuing my efforts to reduce my "carbon footprint" while the wealthy ignore their own advice.

tom - glad to see you're back bashing Democrats under the guise of being an "independent".
I love Republic Party liars.

Al Gore is the real deal or the Republic Party of Karl Rove could come up with something better to swiftboat with than his electric bill and that he flies to events on a private jet.

How are the guys down at Halliburton doing after yesterdays stock market scare??
I'm worried about those "poor" souls.

Keep watching BillO' and Sean Insanity,un-reality TV is better than "real" TV for you guys these days because the reality is that your party is disappearing from the political power seen after the 08 elections....and you only have yourselves to blame.

We already know AlGore is a green fraud in his Nashville home. And USA Today has come out with an article saying he's a green fraud in his Arlington VA home as well. Another anti-green lifestyle can be found at the Democratic National Committee HQ.

I wonder when someone at the Swamp will start being a reporter and investigate how "green" Barack (No middle name were allowed to say) Obama is in his private home and in his Learjetting around the country.

Bruce,

As usual, you make these outrageous claims with absolutely nothing to back it up. Did you even read the article? Gore purchases green renewable energy at a higher rate - he can afford to walk the walk, so he does. Reading is an amazing thing, isn't it?

And if you bothered doing ANY research at all, you'd also know that Barack Obama flys commercially. He said so as much in his book. His "private home" is hardly a mansion. While not small by any means, it's a comparatively modest sized dewlling on the South Side of Chicago, not even close to the size of George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas.

John E. how could I stay away from you forever ?? impossible - you are too lovable

for those who don't know me - I'm the guy who is literally registered as an independent voter in my state and thinks for himself and reads a lot before speaking

everytime I bash the Clintons, John E and a few others accuse me of being a Republican (which I take as an insult - not that he attacks my veracity but because I believe BOTH parties care more about their party being in power than they care about the good of the country as a whole)

everytime I point out that both parties are playing a game of media hype, John E. says I must be a Republican because only a Republican would think the Democrats are not pure in their intentions and flawless in their logic

basically I dislike both parties because they are both full of BS (like this Gore stuff) and I hate BS

so in John E's book, I have to be a Republican because anyone who doesn't think Bill Clinton was a top ten president who only made one mistake in eight years (and that one mistake had nothing to do with being a good president), then I must be a Republican

well the truth is both Bush and Clinton are bottom ten presidents and if we had not had a decent economy under both presidents, they both would have been kicked out of office (even without the Monica story)

would a Republican ever say something like that

no way

still Bush is the sitting president and I'm hoping he yet overcomes some of his mistakes

that's the difference between me and a die hard political loyalist like John E. -- they want GWB to fail even further even if it hurts the country because it will be good for their party and they care more about their party than they care about this country

but I love free speech -- so bring it on John E.

p.s. thanks Jethro for the link

Neil, you might want to do a little research yourself. If you do, or can do some research, you might learn that Bush's Crawford ranch is a TRUE GREEN home. It puts anything Gore can do to shame, which is not hard to do anyway. Bet ya didn't know that, huh Loony Lefter?

John E.

Define swiftboating. You throw that term around like democrats throw around tax increases

Johnny D-

If global warming is a myth and a fraud, why is Bush's ranch green? Is he a looney lefter?

Terry,

I can;

The term 'Swiftboating' originated with the lies of a group of
Swiftboat vets that decided to tell lies, and in fact change their
own previous statements about John Kerry's military service and
medals, including the Silver Star.

It has now entered the lexicon to as a political attack based
on lies, innuendo, revisionist history, and otherwise personal
attacks from moral cowards.

C. Morris,

For John E, "swiftboating" means:
"any idea I disagree with;
or any idea or concept too complicated for me to understand;
or any fact that I'm uncomfortable hearing".

For him it's not about lying at all. That's why the word appears in virtually every one of his posts.

CM,

I appreciate you definition, but I was looking for John E who throws the term around as loose as teh democrats use "for the children" or any politician uses the phrase "the fact of the matter is..."

Al Gore invented the internet and I suspect the thirteen servers that manage the web are in his mansion, which explains his high energy usage.

Just to show that Al Gore doesn't have a monopoly on the aluminum foil hats this is from the Ottowa Citizen:

Paul Hellyer served in the Canadian cabinet in the sixties and he states. Governments have alien technology they obtained from the crashes of UFOs. He says those spacecrafts were equipped with advanced fuel sources and propulsion systems that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuel within a generation.

Boy does Al have brass ones:

According to The Tennessean newspaper’s report, Gore buys his carbon offsets through Generation Investment Management. a company he co-founded and serves as chairman:

Those carbon credits he buys to offset his huge carbon usage, he basically buys from himself.

He whips up this hysteria og global warming and then starts a company that will take advantage of the hysteria.
