Looking for a sneak preview of the real 2008 presidential campaign?

Forget all the hype about who's got the money and who's leading in the polls.

Republicans are offering talking points about each of the Democrats, and they ain't pretty.

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, for instance, is dubbed "an inexperienced, insulated, arrogant, unabashed liberal." 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards is called "a hypocritical, inexperienced liberal with a new negative attitude." Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd is "a New England liberal, past his prime, on an unrealistic vanity run for the White House."

And of course there's frontrunner Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"A Calculating, Divisive, Lifelong Liberal with Political Baggage," reads the headline on her "RNC Research Briefing."

It goes on and on from there…"Media, pundits and even Hillary associates acknowledge her calculating nature," and "Hillary has a history of divisive rhetoric about Republicans and gender roles."

The RNC isn't being shy about this stuff. It introduced the papers at a national conference call with reporters, and later in the day put out multi-page, detailed statements with quotes and data, most of it attributed.

The biggest swipe of all, though, may have been the one the GOP didn't take.

It didn't put out anything on Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Hey, what do you know, the RNC had John D write their talking points.

Typical Republican name calling drivel. No mention of the issues, of course. They need to avoid the issues at all costs.

It's all true! And one has the middle name Hussein.

Paulo

Tony those talking points are more like Paulo like him the Free Republic nuts

Repubs, bring on your "Swiftboat",it's going to sink this time around.

OBAMA IN 08 !!!

When you learn from James Carville, you learn from the best there is at what he does. And what he does is sling mud.

..."liberal"..."liberal"..."liberal"...

...well, let the fun begin...

...this election will determine who the country wants...a liberal or a neocon...

...(sorry folks, any con who supports the Iraq war is a neocon...no substitutes allowed)...

Hey, remember that non-binding resolution all you lefty posters were preening like peacocks over here about just one week ago? The one that was such a HUGE policy statement that you could barely withhold you and Jack Murtha's enthusiasm to de-fund the war even another minute?

Well, look what might happen if you go further down that road: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0207/2865.html

Oooh, that's got to smart. You know you guys did this to yourselves, don't you? Now pro-war Joe has your precious policy by the short hairs. Next time you run off to fund a nutroots candidate to make a policy statement, you might want to be a bit more objective about the dynamics involved. I couldn't've written this one better myself. Thanks Joe, you've made my day.

Let me help the Dems:

John McCain--a mentally unbalanced, angry, sick and old flip-flopper who will do anything to reach the White House. Also loves deficits and wars.

Rudy Guiliani--a moral degenerate who swaps in his wife every several years, occasionally for another family member. Also loves deficits and wars.

Mitt Romney--conservative when it benefits him; liberal when it benefits him. Also loves deficits and wars.

Sam Brownback--wants to set the country back to the 1800s, when minorities and women knew their places and every child had a choice between memorizing the bible or being sent to work the fields. Also loves deficits and wars.

Mike Huckabee--wants to do what Brownback wants to do, but will be nicer about it. Also loves deficits and wars.

Duncan Hunter--Also loves deficits and wars.

Pathetic.

The question is, can the Democrats counter with substance? If they can't, they may be in for trouble.

The primary reason they've had trouble in the past was in running from the label "liberal" instead of defending it and defining it. That has cost them elections they should have won.

I wonder if one of the Republicans talking points will include the fact that they are the party responsible for the slobbering fools who are currently residing in the Whitehouse??

"...AS FAR AS OBAMA GOES,I LIKE HIM AND WILL PROBABLY VOTE FOR HIM...."

Posted by Leo T. Jan 26,2007 11:57:27 AM

Yeah Leo,I think we have candidates(Obama)with substance and I'm glad to see that you agree with me.

Jeffy,

The Dems have got a new resolution that they're going to put to the NeoCons in the Senate within the next few days and this one will be binding.

The Republicans in the Senate should have just bit the bullet on the non-binding stuff.....to late now boys you're going on record whether you like it or not....

P.S...Jeff/Bill,I found an interesting quote yesterday from Rob Haney who is a long time associate of John McCain's and the Republican state committee chair in Arizona's Disrict 11,...McCain's home district, please read..

"MCCAIN IS MENTALLY UNSTABLE AND OUT OF CONTROL AND VINDICTIVE,AFTER DEALING WITH HIM ON A REGULAR BASIS IN ARIZONA FOR YEARS I QUESTION HIS ABILITY TO HANDLE REAL POLITICAL PROBLEMS NATIONWIDE"

Gee Jeff,it's nice to know that people in his home state think so highly of him don't you think???

These things are hilarious. I can't believe real voters read this stuff and make up their minds about who to vote for. God, our country's in trouble.

BB, the Republican version was awesome. Funniest thing you've written on these pages. Well done!

Republicans are going to wing bs every which way they can. Why?

To distract voters from their sorry offerings of candidates for president.

By the way. Nothing has stuck to or will stick to Barack Obama.

America bought the Republicans "Swiftboat" style of politics in 2004 and we have regreted it ever since,I doubt that anyone will buy their line of bull this time around.

Flipflopper McCain is going to be speaking at an Evangelical University this weekend trying to change his image from the "Maverick" days.

If there's one thing we should have learned from the W./Cheney administration it's that the RR is dangerous when they are in control of the Whitehouse.

Save America,don't vote Republican again!!!

Notice how the headline labels the GOP talking points "mudslinging" when they label Hillary (for example) "a calculating, divisive, lifelong Liberal." Does anyone deny that she is all these things? Does it even come close to what Obama's moneyman David Geffen is calling Hillary, which somehow doesn't deserve (according to the reporter and his headline writer) to be labelled "mudslinging"?

No wonder the "Swamp" has been called "the Church Bulletin of the Left".

By whom?

Gore must run. He can win again. He has already been defamed and that stuff has run off his back. Gore/Obama can take the White House for a 16 year stretch.

Wow, John E., there really is no level you won't stoop to, is there?

A 65-year-old retired IBM middle manager is really no one who's opinion of McCain I'd take seriously. This guy barely knows McCain and the radical right is using his desire to make a political name for himself in their campaign to discredit McCain. You're going to have to do much better than that, John E. Rob Haney's simple a disgruntled far-right Republican who's still mad that McCain doesn't support a wall separating the United States and Mexico and that he does support a guest worker program.

"The Church bulletin of the Left"??

Who calls "The Swamp" that, Bruce, except for you, or maybe John D. or Paulo or the rest of the right wing posters here??

And by the way Bruce, the reason why it is called that is because there is nothing of substance in the charges - all words.

The Republican mantra - if you can't beat them on the issues, start calling your opponents names.

Bruce:

Will it ever dawn on you that your relentless (and monotonous) criticism of the Trib's supposed liberal bias is likely only to get you more of the same from the Trib? You profess this disdain for the Trib and yet you continue to post, thereby driving up (in some small way) its ad revenues.

If you don't like what you're reading, don't read it. An outraged reader is a reader still, and your tedious rants, which are inevitably tangential to the thread topic, only feed the dragon.

That's enough for now. I've got to run over to the Washington Times and complain about its conservative bias. I'll stop 'em sure enough.

Actual.lly I would call The Swamp: "The LIBune's Left Wing Daily Crap Machine.

Hey One-Note LIBuners, will you also present to us all the name calling and hate coming from the DNC?

I won't hold my breath! But, please, John E., Catherine, Raving Loon, Janet, BB, Tony, you all can hold your breath!!

Jeff,

The thing about responding to John E is that even if he actually reads your post (and it seems that he usually doesn't if it's longer that 2 or 3 simple sentences) he doesn't understand what you're saying.

Best just to ignore him and let him babble.

I think John E and Paulo are the same person.

Catherine -

Really, you must be able to admit by now that the Swamp is a left-leaning blog.

To all -

The mudslinging goes around on both sides (it's my favorite part of presidential elections, FYI). Just because the Swamp decides to post only the GOP mud doesn't mean the Democrats aren't doing the same thing. In fact, I think you'll see much more mud-slinging on the left this time around, since I think the Democrats generally assume that the Democrat nominee will be our next president. With those stakes, just watch the candidates pull out all the stops leading up to the primaries. Hillary and Obama's little quibble is only the beginning.

And seriously, isn't it time to give up on the "Swift-boating" mantra? You all talk as if that's the only reason Kerry lost, and that the Democrats would never do such a thing...please. I think you swift-boat complainers out there are just upset that the Republicans finally got wise and started doing the same kind of thing Democrats have been doing for years.

Jeffrey/Bill,

I love how you call using someones quote a "low blow",..give me a break.

Rob Haney is the committee chair in Arizona's district 11....JOHN MCCAIN'S HOME DISTRICT IN ARIZONA and he has known him for YEARS..

I think he probably knows Sleepy better than anyone, don't you??

Leo and Muckley..go take a bath...

..."No wonder the "Swamp" has been called "the Church Bulletin of the Left".

By whom?"...

...by Bruce of course...

Paulo, can't you come up with anything better than the Hussein thing. God help us if someone named
Paula runs. PAULA!!! BORING!!!

For those who seem to think "liberal" is an insult anywhere else outside the narrow idealogical re-definitions of Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney et al.

Liberal:

Main Entry: 1lib·er·al
Pronunciation: 'li-b(&-)r&l
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin liberalis suitable for a freeman, generous, from liber free; perhaps akin to Old English lEodan to grow, Greek eleutheros free
1 a : of, relating to, or based on the liberal arts b archaic : of or befitting a man of free birth
2 a : marked by generosity : OPENHANDED b : given or provided in a generous and openhanded way c : AMPLE, FULL
3 obsolete : lacking moral restraint : LICENTIOUS
4 : not literal or strict : LOOSE
5 : BROAD-MINDED; especially : not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms
6 a : of, favoring, or based upon the principles of liberalism b capitalized : of or constituting a political party advocating or associated with the principles of political liberalism; especially : of or constituting a political party in the United Kingdom associated with ideals of individual especially economic freedom, greater individual participation in government, and constitutional, political, and administrative reforms designed to secure these objectives

John, because someone's a local official in McCain's district that means he "knows him better than anyone?" That's ridiculous. Do you have any idea how long McCain's been in office? He first got elected to congress in the 80s.

Just to play along I'd wager that McCain's campaign and half of the U.S. Senate knows him better than this guy, who wasn't an official when McCain served in the 11th district instead of representing the whole state. Cindy McCain probably knows him better. Most Democrats probably know him better.

Rob Haney is a political axe-grinder who wants a wall placed between Arizona and Mexico. That's the root of his entire beef with McCain. I'm more than proud that McCain wouldn't let this rabble-rouser tell him what ideas he should or shouldn't endorse.

Leo's right, you're not even going to read this.

no name,

You make an excellent point about Kerry, which is an expansion of the earlier comment I made. It wasn't so much that Bush won, but that kerry lost. The blockhead set himself up to be attacked about the VN War, with his "reporting for duty" BS.

The Democrats have a history of doing blundering like that. Remember when Carter was supposed to easily win against the crackpot B-movie actor Reagan? Remember Michael "Massachussets Miracle" Dukakis being a whopping 17 points ahead of Bush 41 in July of '88? Remember when smartest-kid-in-the-class Gore was supposed to wipe up the floor with dumb Bush 43?

The Democrats have a habit of losing elections they should have -- or at least could have -- won. They're well positioned to take the White House in '08, but given recent history they'd do well not too be cocky.

I've said that before in this forum, and the afore mentioned dim bulbs attacked me for it.

Haney is a LONGTIME REPUBLICAN FRIEND of McCain's on top of being the state committee chair.

Haney knows Sleepy very well and he has more support in Distric 11 than McCain does....a VERY Republican district I might add.

Posted by: Jeff

What do ya know, he's (James Carville) married to a Republican. Maybe there's hope for those of us who think Democrats & Republicans can actually work together. now I know that concept will bug the Paula's, and Rey's of the swamp. Don't freak out guys your brown shirts will always define YOUR brand of politics!

Leo -

You are so right about Democrat loses. Although, I can't help but also wonder if issues come into play as well. I have noticed a tendency among Democrats to skew left in the latter days of elections, perhaps because they're nervous about losing their base. I think most "average" voters out there hover around the "middle" on issues so when a candidate appears too extreme they tend to get turned off.

Ultimately, it's best for everyone to remember how much a part politics plays in each election.

Wrong again, John E. McCain and Rob Haney are NOT friends. Haney tried to get McCain to take a hard line against illegal immigration and endorse the idea of a wall between Arizona and Mexico. McCain would not and when he did Haney and his committee condemned McCain for it. McCain, no stranger to a fight, tried to get the entire district 11 board kicked out of office. He even got Fife Symington to run against Haney for chairman of the district 11 board.

Unfortunately Haney still won and went on to say how "unstable" McCain is because he tried to get a rabble rouser like Haney kicked out of his committee head position through normal democratic means. You know, that he would stand up for himself and take a pragmatic approach to illegal immigration (McCain is in favor a guest worker program, Haney is not).

Yes this is a very republican district. The fact that they can fight amongst themselves this way is the Arizona version of a Chicago aldermanic primary. To suggest that these two are somehow friends is ridiculous.
