WASHINGTON--Two days after he visited South Carolina, York County Democrats took a straw poll Sunday and Dodd won 28 percent of the approximately 100 people voting. Runnerup was Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois at 24 percent, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York at 18 percent; 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards at 11 percent and Delaware Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. at 5.5 percent. Former Vice President Al Gore, running as a write-in, got 8 percent.

Jim Watkins, York County chairman, had a simple explanation for Dodd's success: "He visited here," Watkins said.

But the chairman quickly added that the triumph should not be dismissed. Dodd campaigned in the county Friday, and Watkins thought it significant that activists returned for a meeting Sunday and gave Dodd their votes.

"As people got to know him, they liked him. That goes a long way," the chairman said. "He's a good storyteller with a good sense of humor, and people related to that."

The poll was conducted in Rock Hill, a Charlotte, N.C., suburb, as activists watched videos submitted by each candidate.

For Dodd, the win was a rare bit of good news in a campaign that has seen him at the bottom of poll after poll. Sunday, for instance, a Los Angeles Times survey of Democratic National Committee members found Dodd the first choice of 1 percent--and second choice of 1 percent, even though 78 percent of DNC members had a favorable impression of Dodd. Dodd was the party's general chairman in 1995 and 1996.

Dodd's staff and backers, though, have long maintained he is running a campaign far different from the hihg-octane efforts of Obama, Clinton and Edwards. "This is the tortoise versus the hare," said spokeswoman Beneva Schulte.

Dodd's strategy has been to campaign the old-fashioned way, meeting with small groups in the key early primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, while at the same time keeping up his fundraising.

The York County result is evidence the strategy is working, said Michelle Macrina, a Greenville, S.C. consultant serving as Dodd's state spokeswoman.

"This tells you that when Chris Dodd meets people," she said, "they're drawn to him."

Does Chris Dodd have a relative that works in the Libune Washington bureau? The truly pedestrian news about him that continues to make it into "The Swamp" is perlexing.

Chris Dodd gets more LIBune coverage than all GOP presidential candidates combined. The only two candidates who get more coverage than Dodd in the LIBune are Barack and Hillary.

Mitt "Frenchy" Romney won the straw poll at the Republican Party "Conference" on Saturday in D.C.

You know,...the Republican "Conference" that had Ann Coltergeist as the featured speaker.

The Grand Old Pedophiles Party is a complete disaster these days thanks to W. and Veep Dick Vader.

John E. if any political party is the party of pedophiles is the Democratic party. You know the one in which Grand Pedophile Congressman Gerry Studds ACTUALLY slept with a 17-year-old page rather tham hit on one. You know the party that in so many states across the country where they are against minimum sentences for pedophiles, or in which gives pedophiles probation rather than prison? Or what about the ACLU, which believes NAMBLA has the right to tell child predators who to be predators and actually molest young boys? Yes, John E., is the Democratic party that is the party of pedophiles.

100 Democrats voting, with Dodd the only candidate that showed up, and even then he gets only 28 votes. Pretty sad for Dodd.

Is reporter David Lightman on Dodd's staff? Sure seems like it. The Swamp has run as many stories on Dodd (less than 1% in the polls) as there are actual Dodd supporters.

Little Johnny D,

Do the names(R)Mark Foley and Rev. Ted Haggard ring a bell for you ???

How about Bill-O from the Fox Noise Channel getting axed from his speaking gig in Florida recently??

Bill-O was going to be the featured speaker at a conference on Missing and Exploited Children...until they heard him say on the air that he thought that Shawn Hornbeck,a recently found kidnapped and sexully abused teenager in St. Louis, enoyed living with his kidnapper more than his parents.

I'll stick with the Grand Old Pedophiles slogan for the GOP , they've earned it.

I think your first point is dead on.

As for the second, you might note that Hartford is in Connecticut, just like Dodd. Not all editorial decisions are the product of a vast left wing conspiracy. Some things are the result of basic journalism.

John E., Bill O'reilly never said Shawn Hornbeck enjoyed living with his kidnapper. More distortions from your Loony Left ilk. In fact, O'Reilly has been a champion in protecting kids, getting Jessica's law passed and enacted across the country.

What teen did Ted Haggard sleep with? And what teen did Mark Foley sleep with? Are you condemning all gay men as being pedophiles? Doesn't sound very liberal to me!

Little Johnny, Bill-O said it ON THE AIR and got axed from his speaking gig in Florida because of it.

As long as the GOP allows the NeoCons to continue to hijack their party platform they'll continue to be the minority party Mr.Dyslin.

Goodluck to the Republican's in 08 with the noose that is President Rambo and Deadeye Cheney around your necks.

No, we just accuse Haggard of being a liar, a hypocrite, and a crack-head.

The predator Foley was hitting on young pages for years, and Republican leadership knew about it, but kept silent to preserve Foley's district for the GOP. And don't whine to me about some "conspiracy of Democrats to sit on the information for political purposes", assume responsibility for a change.

And Studds, democratic leaders did not engage in a cover-up, and he was censored by the House. Not quite the same story as Foley.

Johnny D,
Sorry to bring facts and perspective to the equation:

"The situation here for this kid looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his old parents...And I think when it all comes down, what's going to happen is, there was an element here that this kid liked about his circumstances." -Bill O'Reilly, 01/16/2007 The O'Reilly Factor

Wrong again, Dt. Rahm Emanuel knew about Foley WAY before the Republican leadership did. But Rahm doesn't care if any kids get molested. He only cared about winning.

Don't believe me? Fine, ask Matt Miller:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/09/foley.emanuel/index.html

"Are you condemning all gay men as being pedophiles?" asked John D.

"No, we just accuse Haggard of being a liar, a hypocrite, and a crack-head." says dt.

Sorry, dt but John D's right on this one. In point of fact, John E is calling them pedophiles, and they're not.

I guess it's the stress of posting while in combat that makes John E make these careless, obviously wrong statements.

PS, Don't bother reminding me that Haggard, Foley and O'Reilly are all sleazy, each in their own way. I already know that, but it's beside the point.

"Little Johnny D,
Do the names(R)Mark Foley and Rev. Ted Haggard ring a bell for you ??"

John E, all,

If you want to see the funniest 5 minutes on film, go rent
'Jesus Camp' and see Ted Haggard's big scene. Sweet.

"What teen did Ted Haggard sleep with? "
Posted by John D."

John D,

Well, we don't know yet, but we do know how predators work.
Like anyone in authority, they use their power and influence to
isolate and render helpless their victims.

Why don't you stick to advise on heating and AC problems?

Considering that this started as a thread about Dodd's "success" in some straw poll, I think we're already well beside the point on this one.

Does anyone remember Charlotte's pizza at Dundee/Northwest Highway in Barrington? Thin crust and they made their own sausage. And sold $2 bottles of Leine. Killer good stuff.

John E,

Quit ducking the question: Define swiftboating.

Don't forget Mel Reynolds, either, who spent four years in federal PMITA prison for having actual intercourse with a 16-year-old subordinate... then had his sentence commuted by a guy - the president nonetheless... who also had sexual relations with a much younger female subordinate... and then he was given a job by an Democrat "spiritual leader" who had an affair with a much younger female subordinate. Mel's new job? Youth counselor.

Yep, there's plenty of guilt on both sides here.

p.s. Can't go wrong with Giordano's.

Billy/Jeff,

Your guy McCain is down 25% to Rudy.

Don't you think you should be working on McCain's failing campaign rather than trying to blame the Republican coverup for pedophile (R)Mark Foley in order to keep a seat in the House of Rep's on Rahm ??

Terry!
Dont bother brother johnE now he out on patroll till mourning.
Dale Peters

Loony Lefters, we do know that Haggard apparently slept with a gay prostitute several times. A legal age prostitute. Suddenly, somehow in the tiny little brains that make up the Loony Left that means he preyed on kids. Nice leap there.

Regarding Gerry Studds. Gerry Studds SLEPT with and had an affair with a 17-year-old male page. Mark Foley did none of those things. Mark Foley resigned his seat. Gerry Studds kept getting re-elected until he retired in 1996. Do you folks need more explaining?

And it is so hilarious that the demented John E. seems to have so much time on his hands that he has to investigate exactly who John D is. You have that much time in mummy and duddy's basement, John E? Should I hire a private investigator to seek you out? Or how about the police, the FBI? Gee, John E., for someone who is suppose to be fighting in Iraq, you sure do have a lot of time on your hands!

That's because Chris Dodd has more integrity than all of the GOP presidential candidates combined.

John D:

If Studds was so bad, why couldn't the Republicans run anybody that could beat him in an election in all those years after he was censured in the House?

BC, Gerry Studds was a representative in the liberal state of Massachusetts. It has been proven over and over again that Democrats will re-elect Democrats no matter who corrupt they are. Look at the election of Todd Stroger. Look at the re-election of Gov. Blablooeyavich. Look at the re-election of Mayor Daley. Look at all the times Teddy Kennedy has been re-elected. Look at the re-election of William "I have $90,000 in my freezer" Jefferson.

Regarding Studds, the House Democrats never removed, never asked him to resign and his constituents didn't care. Ideology is all that matters for Democrats. John Gacy could be U.S. Senator from Illinois (he was a Demo precinct captain) and you Democrats would still vote for him.

Johnny D,
Prostitution is illegal at any age. Sorry to bring facts and perspective to the equation.

Littly Johhny D,
All those names you named are innocent until you prove otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt.

Very funny, "John," that you would say those folks are innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. You might want to practice that philosophy on others beyond your left-wing buddies.!

And, Jethro, I never mentioned prostitution, only that Gerry Studds had an ongoing sexual affair with a House page (male). Now if you want to discuss prostitution, I am more than willing to talk about Barney Frank and his escort boyfriend who was running a gay escort agency from Barney Frank's condo. Barney Frank is still in Congress too!

"And, Jethro, I never mentioned prostitution..."

Is this another lie or an ommision, Johnny D, reporter extraordinaire?:

"Loony Lefters, we do know that Haggard apparently slept with a gay prostitute several times. A legal age prostitute."

Does it shame or embarass you on any level that you are the least thorough "journalist" on the planet? Are you really incapable of double-checking or even remembering what you wrote 12 hours ago?

Bryan,
Funny thing is that time stamp is wrong. Both his comments were made today within an hour of each other.

John d,

Be sure to check out 'Jesus Camp' and enjoy Haggard's
funniest five minutes on film.

Can't wait to see Perkins, Dobson, Robertson in a similar sichyation; they doth protest too much, ehy?

Also;
My furnace seems to run too long. What do you recommend?

If, as many of you say, John D can't fact check, than maybe he can get a job at the New York Times. I'm sure Jayson Blair's desk is still available.

So, i did mention prostitution. Sue me! Still the point is lost on your Loony Lefters. John E lumps Haggard in with Foley. The point was not that prostitution is legal, the point was that the man Haggard had been sleeping with was an adult, not a minor or near minor.

The other point is that you Loony Lefters have never condemned your party or Gerry Studds for actually having sex with a 17-year-old page, but Mark Foley, who only sent e-mails, gets condemned. And don't think I am defending Foley cause I am not. But e-mails do not compare to actually doing the deed.

But common sense is still lost on the Loony Left.

John E.... You still feeling good about Pinocchio Obama ? I see he's disassociating himself from that wonderful Trinity Church, and the NYT is reporting some questionable stock deals. I think the Times likes Billary, what do you think ? Pinocchio won't be around for the the first corn harvest. I can't figure out who's behind this, is it Mr. Rove, or Mssrs. Carville and Begala. Bottom line is these are despicable acts, and i hope they stop immediately if not sooner.

Terry McAuliffe, Paul Begala and James Carville all have gone on record as saying that anyway who gets in Hillary's way will be destroyed. Can Barack take the Clintoon heat?

"the senator did not know that he had invested in either company until fall 2005, when he learned of it and decided to sell the stocks. He sold them at a net loss of $13,000."
-03/07/2006 Chicago Tribune

Thats a real scandal from which he did not benefit financially from, Don B. Keep reaching and try to read more than the headline.

JETHRO : It certainly wasn't for lack of effort on Pinocchios' part, he took the lead in an effort to get the federal government to spend more money to fight the bird flu. I see you convenietly left that out,
kind of like Harry Reid forgetting about his land deals. I think it's called ethics Jethro. Don't worry Jethro, I won't mention the other deal with the campaign contributors that gave $150,000 to him,
you know his new freinds that he partnered up with the satellite
communications comp.

"he took the lead in an effort to get the federal government to spend more money to fight the bird flu."

Nah, Rumsfeld beat him to it. He made a million in the process.

Wow old thread, but I felt compelled to say that I loved Charlotte's Pizza. Too bad it was torn down by IDOT in '89. First place I ever had a beer, and it was a Leinie.
