"A year ago,'' President Bush said over dinner last night, "my approval rating was in the 30s, my Supreme Court nominee had just withdrawn and my vice president had shot someone…
"Those were the good old days,'' he said, with a dryly delivered line that sparked laughter throughout the ballroom of the Washington Hilton.
Yes, it's that confessional season again in Washington in which even the president is wont to admit to a sense of humor as he troops through the annual dinners of the news correspondents who cover Washington. It was the Radio and Television Correspondents' dinner last night that provided a forum for the comedian-in-chief. And even the president's political "architect,'' Karl Rove, was hauled on stage, making his own game appearance as a hip-hop dancer to the rap lyrics: "He's a dancing resident, he's a sidekick to the president.''
"I'd like to thank Sen. Webb for providing security,'' said Bush, with a nod to the Democratic senator from Virginia, Jim Webb, whose aide was arrested this week for apparently unwittingly carrying a handgun and some clips of ammunition into a Senate office building in a bag.
The White House insists it doesn't want Rove "hauled up'' on Capitol Hill to testify about the federal prosecutor firings, with worries about "a media spectacle.'' But with Rove making his own media splash last night, the president had this to say about the spiraling controversy over the prosecutors: "We really blew the way we let those attorneys go,'' Bush said. "You know you botched it when people pity lawyers."
Karl Rove's dance party.
The appearance of the comedian-in-chief
The president faces another of these comedic hurdles, in the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association in April. But he will take a pass this year on the annual dinner of the Gridiron Club on Saturday night, an event where some of the city's most seasoned reporters don costumes and make fun of all who rule in Washington. He is playing host to the president of Brazil at Camp David that day.
But Bush is dispatching Vice President Dick Cheney to the Gridiron. Robert Novak says so.
Bush, in good form last night, insisted that he has no intention of being a "lame duck president…
"Unless Cheney accidentally shoots me."
Pondering what book-project he might take post-presidency, with an allusion to Bill Clinton's weighty My Life, the president said he is thinking of "something fun and creative for mine…
"Maybe a pop-up book."
He offered some possible titles: "How W Got His Groove Back," or "Tuesdays with Cheney."
The ballroom was filled with a bipartisan lineup of luminaries, though the president did note that Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, Democratic presidential aspirant, was not there.
"Not enough press,'' said Bush.
The president also invoked the swimsuit photo of Obama's Hawaii vacation:: "His pecs glistening in the sun…
"Have you ever seen a shot like that of Denny Hastert?"
The president and first lady had arrived by limo at 7:33 pm EDT, somewhat late by the president's own schedule. He wore the traditional tuxedo with bow tie, she a shimmering purple green gown.
With an official White House transcript of said events, as they say, still "in the e-mail,'' we owe our account of the president's laugh lines and all the rest to the fine pool reporting of Ian Bishop of the New York Post.
Our pooler also reported that the first couple had waited off stage during the pre-dinner mingle period as Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, chatted with folks, and Republican National Committee general chairman Mel Martinez , less than 20 feet away, stood alone behind his chair at table 95, nursing a glass of red wine.
"It's been a long day," Martinez quipped.
Ten minutes later, the chairmen sat at the same table, separated by NBC News' Tim Russert.
A Gulf Coast menu was served: New Orleans cajun salad, Texas rubbed tenderloin of beef (with grilled vegetables and glazed sweet potato) finished with Mississippi Mud pie – "no word,'' the pooler wryly noted, "on whether the bar was serving Hurricanes.''
On the serious side, the president did acknowledge the battles with his cancer that his own press secretary, Tony Snow, and Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards, are facing. He pursed his lips upon taking his seat at the head table..
His motorcade delivered the first couple home to the White House by 10:24 pm EDT, a late-night for Bush, and a long day, by any standards, for a president forced to laugh at himself.

Funny stuff. He certainly makes a better comedian than a President.

At least they didn't find anything to joke about in Iraq.

I guess I need to lighten up. I thought we were in a serious situation with thousands dead in Iraq and tensions mounting worldwide. I thought the political impasse in our branches of government was a significant blemish in our nation's history. I should be eating ice cream and pretending to be a rapper. Silly me.

Why do they even have these correspondents dinners where everyone gets dressed up and pretends to not detest each other? Seems to me that this pageantry is a holdover from a bygone era.

Too bad people are laughing at Bush, not with him. I am glad the whole crowd got a good laugh at what a complete mess this country is in. Bush's two terms have been a nightmare it will take this nation a long time to recover from. Maybe then we'll find something to laugh about.

By the way, "Have you ever seen a shot like that of Denny Hastert?" - thanks for the mental image. Hopefully that will go away before lunch.

Do yourselves a favor learn somthing RESPECT!!!!

I read this early today but withheld comment to see how long it would take for people to complian about the President making jokes "at a time like this." This dinner and the associated joking are a Washington tradition. When your guy is in office you'll all remark about what incredible wit he has, so just lighten up.
I can't wait for Bush to leave office just so you all can quit compliaining about him. Plus, since it's likely the Democrats will be in complete control, I'll be interested to see who you'll blame then for the country's woes.

As usual, I am so proud of my President for graciously resisting the urge to cower from unrelenting, hateful, lib' attacks. President Bush's wit and Karl Rove's good sportedness--at this social/professional event--were not only appropriate but refreshing. I suppose some of you feel that humor and entertainment are solely reserved for Democrat fundraisers and Holly-weird ms.
Mr. President, when years have passed and I reflect on the many leaders we have elected, I will forever admire your decency, courage, conviction, smile and humor. I only hope you will not be the last truly good person this country was fortunate enough to elect President.
For those of you who do nothing but complain, look in the mirror for the true culprit. Your desire for a country of blamers, takers, cowards, anything-goes amoralists and personality chameleons disserves America in countless ways. Congratulations.

That's pretty funny, no name. See, there's this ex-president named Bill Clinton and, even though he's been out of office for over 6 years now, the Republicans and Neocons STILL BLAME HIM for darn near everything that they can, as a way to distract attention from the failure that is the GW Bush administration.
So tell us - when will the Republicans & Neocons quit complaining about Clinton?

Lori, a country of blamers, takers, cowards, anything-goes amoralists and personality chameleons, that pretty much sums up the scum that we have been symbolic of the Bush years--Delay, Foley, Scooter Libby, the list goes on and on. Have you not been reading the news for the past year, or is that too "liberal" for you?
Posted by: Martin | March 29, 2007 11:11 AM

I wish it were that easy that we could separate Bush from the stubborn, vindictive and adolescent character that he is from the office of the President but, unfortunately, it is not only difficult, it is nearly impossible for a rational person to do.
RESPECT is not learned, it is EARNED!

Why is it that "conservatives" insist that anyone left of center is "amoral" or even immoral? As if just because they live a Christian life dedicated to the bible they've got a one way ticket to heaven. Wait!!! that's it!!! They're moral because they fear punishment for wrong doings rather than doing what is right because it is the right thing to do! Which is the exact reason why many terrorists so strongly believe in their actions, because a god wills it.
As an atheist (a.k.a. godless) I'm offended that one may think I have no morals because I don't have a god watching over my every action. My morals are strongly held and don't need a government to impose laws in order to preserve them.

Even that kid doing the Star Wars light saber thing on YouTube looked less dorky than Rove...
And stop complaining how "in times like these" you can't joke. Then don't watch the Daily Show.
And commenters, please, also stop using tired stereotypes of liberals and conservatives on The Swamp. In the words of that guy from the Daily Show: "Stop, stop, stop, stop hurting America."
What it comes down to is bipartisan unfunniness. Republican or Democrat, politicians are just not funny.

Lori- You are dense and pathetic. You are also a hypocrite. When Bill Clinton was President we had unrelenting and hateful attacks against him almost daily. There were also personal attacks against his wife and Chelsea. If you think this moron Bush is descent and courageous you obviously don't have any sort of understanding of those words. If you think this Mr. Bush is a good President you have no concept of U.S. history and/or what a good President is. He has desacreted the office of President. What is Bush's approval rating these days?? Where have you been?? Overdosing on Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and going gaga over Fox News. Bush makes himself look like an incompetent fool more and more each day. He can't even speak correct English. You should look at yourself in a mirror.

I am so proud of my President for petulantly resisting the urge to accept responsibility for his unrelenting incompetent blunders, particularly his Iraq attack. President Bush's witless clowning and Karl Rove's godawful rap--at this social/professional event were appropriate--for the worst president ever. I suppose some of you feel that humor and entertainment are solely reserved for Democrat fundraisers and Holly-weird forums. This performance proves you're absolutely right.
Mr. President, when years have passed and I reflect on the many leaders we have elected, I will forever admire your gall, your lack of morals, and your ability to smile and make humor out of the suffering of other Americans. I look forward to your conviction. I only hope you will be the last truly ignorant person this country was unfortunate enough to elect President.

Evan,
First, please, I'm begging you, enlighten me on Bush's positives. I mean, other than that he's apparently a swell guy to have a beer, er, coffee with. I tell my daughter that there's at least a little good in everyone, but I have to admit I'm stumped on this one.
Second, I would LOVE the opportunity to say any or all of what's been said in this forum to Bush's face, but the likelihood that I would ever have the opportunity to be one of pre-screened people who's allowed to get within 10 miles of the president is about the same likelihood that I could look at a picture of Denny Hastert's pecs glistening in the sun without losing my lunch.

Evan,...get your head out of the sand or where ever it is. Nobody has to respect this President. He's inept and if there is a God George W. Bush and his entire administration will see time in prison. As for "no name" (very clever) and Lori, it's quite apparent you haven't been paying attention. You must be a couple of the 10 percenters in this country who think Bush really is King,...he thinks so.
Unfortunately America will suffer for decades as a result of what Bush has done to us, including Evan, no name, and Lori who are blind deaf & dumb to the facts. Of course if Bush picks another war with the wrong country it might not matter to any of us.

Good Lord -- what a whiny bunch!
Like Bush, don't like Bush. Blame him, don't blame him. But lighten up -- a few jokes at a traditional gathering and so many folks are up in arms. And it turns right into Republican vs Democrat (or Liberal vs Conservative) attacks.
I personally like Bush, didn't like Clinton. But I can see the good and bad about both of them. Does every column related to politics always have to turn into crazed attacks?
Posted by: Curt | March 29, 2007 12:44 PM

Really, Catherine, are you starting to agree with me when you look at some of these posts? You can disagree with Bush all you want, but please tell me that I have a point, OK?
I have seen so many off-the-wall, childish posts in the past week from the Left: everything from glee over Tony Snow's cancer, an attack on the mother of a U.S. serviceman, to the childish pitter patter from the Loony Left here and in many, many others.

Why would you care about an attack on the mother of a US serviceman. Does Cindy Sheehan ring a bell?

You seem to have your posts tangled. The ones dragging politics into cancer were written by Paulo, your side, about Elizabeth Edwards. The "loonies", almost to a man, took a "there but by the grace of God go I" approach to Tony Snow.
The serviceman's mother under fire is Mrs. Tillman, and it's coming from yoru firends again, as they try to accuse her of profiteering from her son's death.
I think all of you fools deserve each other -- nothing but a bunch of wannabe Segrettis and Carvilles who think a PC makes you a pundit. To find civil political dialogue is an impossibility with you around. Catherine is right to back away.

Frankly that's some funny stuff from Bush and company (his speechwriters ought to get some "props"). And to see Karl Rove celebrate his uber-whiteness is frankly worth a chuckle if not a groan of embarassment and dread. Bush all in all was a genial thoughtful and actually a humorous guy until he took office and the neo-conservatives tailored him to be the mouthpiece of hamfisted, bullying, braying, shout-down politics that was as corrupt, self-serving and preverted as the "immoral" left--who incidentally need to lighten up. It's more than evident America still needs a catharsis for 9/11 and based on the "neo-conservative" response to 9/11, America needs a catharsis from them.

It seems as though Bush has finally found his calling in life - entertainment. His many attempts at professional life have all fallen short, none falling shortest than his presidency. I love to hear right-wingers try to defend Bush, as they have done so here. He has utterly failed in his post, and those who still support him are the real comedians in all of this. If you are against abortion, homosexuality, alternative energy, the environment, anyone who isn't a christian, standardized health care, and general global harmony, then he was your man. Otherwise, he has been a disgrace to those who have come before him and he has nothing left to do but laugh at himself and the joke that is his administration's legacy. Resign, you foolish, misguided, little man, as many in your cabinet have done so already. Wait! Forget I said that - Cheney would be at the helm. I'm on political hiatus until I can vote for someone who might do some good.

Easy now everybody. I teach my kids that I dislike their actions, not them. Can we please disagree over policy, not the person. This atmosphere of personal attack - hating someone you have never even met (Bush or Clinton) - is what is eroding this country's (and world's) fine fabric.
