The two-star Army general in charge of Walter Reed Army Medical Center was relieved of command today as criticism mounted from Democratic lawmakers over revelations that soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan were housed among mice, mold, rot and cockroaches.

The Washington Post, which last week first disclosed conditions in a dingy former hotel used to house outpatients wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families, reported earlier in the day that the hospital’s command had been aware of the substandard conditions for more than three years.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama of Illinois denounced the episode as “scandalous” as he introduced legislation to require improvements in military outpatient housing and outside inspections of facilities for wounded soldiers.

“The higher-ups in charge of this should have addressed this, and the fact that they didn’t is shameful,” Obama said.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), another presidential candidate, formally requested an investigation from the Army inspector general.

“Not enough has been done to assist these courageous men and women in recovering from the wounds of battle,” Clinton wrote. “We must know what Army leaders knew, when they knew it, and why they failed to take corrective actions.”

The storm of criticism and the rapid departure of Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, who was commanding general of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command as well as Walter Reed hospital, comes at a moment when public and political attention has shifted to inadequate care of wounded soldiers.

In addition to the Washington Post investigation of the military’s premier medical institution, the current Newsweek magazine cover “Failing Our Wounded” found wounded Iraq veterans waiting weeks or months for medical appointments and families sliding into debt while overloaded bureaucrats study disability claims for months on end.

Former ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff, who suffered traumatic brain injuries from an explosion while on assignment in Iraq, returned to the air Tuesday night with a documentary showing brain-injured Iraq veterans regressing in their recoveries because of lack of proper continuing therapy in the veterans health care system.

With both the House and the Senate in control of the opposition party for the first time since the Iraq War began, Democrats in Congress are determined to hold the Bush Administration accountable for failures in waging the war.

While Democrats are divided over how aggressively to use congressional authority over federal spending to limit Bush’s prosecution of the war, treatment of wounded veterans is a politically safe cause that the party can easily rally around while focusing attention on the costs of the unpopular war.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced the Democrats in the House would attach additional funding to address deficiencies in housing for soldiers at Walter Reed when Congress considers an emergency spending bill to continue funding the war.

"Of all of the debts owed to the men and women who serve in our military, and to their families, none is more important than to ensure that those wounded in battle are treated immediately, and for as long as is required, with all of the medical skill, compassion, and effectiveness that can be brought to bear,” Pelosi said. “It is clear that improvements are necessary to make certain that our national obligation is met."

Shortly afterward, Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey announced he was relieving Weightman of his command.

In a brief statement, the Amry said service leaders had ``lost trust and confidence’’ in Weightman’s leadership abilities ``to address needed solutions for soldier outpatient care’’ at Walter Reed.

I heard on the radio this morning that the previous general in charge of Walter Reed heard about these problems back in 2003! And did nothing about them!

So much for "supporting the troops".

The dismissal of Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman will certainly turn out to be an extreem miscarraige of justice. If the General was smart I bet he kept the many written requests for upgrades to Walter Reed that I'm sure he made. If you've ever worked in government or for large institutions you will know, deep in your heart, that there is no money for repairs to peeling wall paint until someone flips out about it. I have a feeling that Gen. Weightman has fallen on his sword to protect his superiors and they will probably retire him with full military honors and pension. The man has most likely done nothing but try to keep a post that was scheduled for demolition open until it was time to close it. As a democrat I'm appalled once again by my own party leaders who are jumping on the wordsmith-spin-doctor-bandwagon and trying to lynch this guy. They are just gleefully spewing testimonials and should just grow some dignity and fix the problem.

That sure is SOME "support of the troops" the Republicans like to rant about. It's not enough to just depive them of armor and training. Now they heve to suffer through deprivation of humanity.

Actions speak louder than words and Republican words are now proven hollow!

More heads need to roll. I doubt this one guy was really responsible for the entire mess.

Lt. Gen Kevin Kiley must have very important friends in very high places. He has been in position to take care of the out-patient problem for several years. Gen. Weightman for seven months.Gen. Kiley has condoned the problems. He has denied the problems. He has defended the failures and he has spun the problems at a press conference. The buck stops a foot short of Gen. Kiley. That's political power.

Several years ago, 60 minutes, 20-20, or dateline had put hidden cameras in the V.A. hospitals. It was great T.V. but nothing was ever done. Nothing has changed.

This story all falls back into the lap of the Clinton Administration. If they didn't cut the military budgets by 50% and leave the military $53 billion short, this story never would have had to happen. Many of the heads that will roll over the conditions at building 18 were Clinton appointee's...B.J was just a draft dodging military hating baffoon.
Thank-God we have people like Dale Peters out there to keep an eye on things,we all him a debt of gratitude for exposing himself.
Paulo

The W. administration has known about this since 2003,also as I recall we had a lockstep REPUBLICAN CONGRESS during this time.

What a joke that the party that claims to support the troops knew about this all along and did........nothing.

I can't say that I'm surprised, look at the clowns on this site who are robot Republican drone followers,John D.,Paulo,Bruce,Don B.....do I need to say anymore??? these are the kind of people who have been in charge of our country the last 6 yrs.

I hope people realize that the military and the W. administration are privatly disiplining the troops at Walter Reed who exposed their incompetence to the media.

Where the hell were Obama and Clinton when my father was suffering in a delapidated VA hopital in Florida? He couldn't get so much as a blanket or any decent care because of liberal cutbacks to military funding! These disgusting hypocrites would rather see every veteran dead than lift a finger and NOW they go on record? HYPOCRITICAL SLIME.

What does George Bush have to say about this?? He's been mum ever since the story broke. It goes to show you what he really thinks about the troops, especially the critically wounded ones.
Bush is an incompetent moron. The absolute worst President this country has had.

Michael,

Sorry for your father's suffering, but the VA and Pentagon have been under the jaundiced eye of the executive branch of W (and rubber stamped by a GOP led Congress) for the past six years.

Dale Peters,

You should chime in on this one.

KB,

My guess is that DP is gone for good. I sense that you think he was wronged. If so, it's obvious that you didn't read the links about him.

Read (NOT the "Free Republic" one, BTW) then judge.

Just announced: the Secretary of the Army has "resigned" over this scandal.

Leo T,

I consider this a forum to discuss the issues presented (as has Dale), not to participate in character assassination. I won't take "Quicksilver"s word for it any more than I take "Leo T"s word for it. Blogs ain't the truth, pal.

Judging from his offerings on the Swamp, Dale has been a champion of veteran's rights, which is more than I can say for 99% of Swamp entrants.

Hear,Hear Kenny B.!!!!

Dale P was not only "swiftboated" by Leo T/no name,he was also hacked up by yuppie young Republican Billy/Jeff.

"Leo" likes to think he's in control of this forum.

DALE P.,IF YOU'RE OUT THERE COME BACK,WE DON'T BELIEVE BILLY/JEFF AND LEO T/NO NAME!!!!!!!!!

I salute "Dale's" advocating for veterans. I always have and I always will.

However if you look at the facts (and its obvious from your remarks that you haven't) it's clear that "dale" is not what he has always pretended to be.

I can't go into detail here anymore, but there have been some unfortunate consequences about that.

Forget about this "Quicksilver" guy that you're hung up on. Liberal blogs, political organizations and Vets' advocacy groups have encountered "Dale" and said the same thing: but it amounts to not what he has always pretended to be.

DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT! Read the information and then decide.

Some comments about semantics.

KB, my understanding of the phrase "character assassination" is to maliciously lie or at least distort the truth about a person. Jeff and I (and Jeff gets the principle credit for this, BTW) did no such thing.

We did not present crazed obscure blog rantings as fake evidence. Rather there is very solid, documented trail of DP's activities and his background (or lack thereof). This came from probably the most Left/Liberal source in America, BTW, so it's not a Right Wing conspiracy.

Read it, then judge.

John E,

The term "swiftboating" has entered the common lexicon of Liberals to mean lying about somebody's record to discredit him/her.

The word does NOT mean...

- Anything John E disagrees with.

- Any idea too complex for John E to comprehend.

- Any truth that John E finds discomfitting or just inconvenient. (with a tip of the hat to Al Gore)

PS, Should DP return and start talking about combat experience a lot of people will call him on it. As they should.

PPS, Kudos to Jeff on this. Now let's all just put it behind us.

Oh, and by the way, John E,

You have been calling me "John D" for weeks... so now I'm "no name"? Can you just settle on one and stick with it?

Here's a thought: maybe I'm just Leo T!

I had noticed that DP appears on the pownet site. They are dedicated to rooting out the military records of people pretending to be vets that may not be. It seems that have done a search on DP go read it for yourselves. Not exactly a left wing site.

God is there anything in the world that goes wrong that George Bush doesn't get blamed for? The next thing you know you liberals
will be blaming him for hurricanes. Wait a second,,,,,Katrina was his fault too !

"God is there anything in the world that goes wrong that George Bush doesn't get blamed for? "

No.

Hey, he wanted the job. Did he think it would be easy?

Hey GWB; Welcome to Bill Clinton's world.

C. Morris,

In the world I live in Clinton is good ol' Bubba, and when he was Prez life was perfect and nothing bad ever happened to Americans.

What world do you live in?

Leo T,

Disingenuousness does not become you.

You really don't remember Slick being blamed for everything that went wrong in the Nineties?

Heck, the intellectually bankrupt *RRRC are still blaming him
for everything that ever went wrong anywhere.

Here's the biggest lie told by the conservative right;

'Bill Clinton is a liberal'

Now, if you have read anything I have ever posted on this subject you will know why I say that.

* Rapture Ready Republican Conservatives

"You really don't remember Slick being blamed for everything that went wrong in the Nineties?"

He's still being blamed for everything now. Just watch the Swamo, and see how many threads produce ad hominem attacks against Mr. Clinton. 9/11, the Iraq War, heck tom even blamed Clinton for the rise of China and OBESITY!

I don't agree that everything that has gone wrong is Mr. Bush's fault, just the overwhelming majority. The levees breaking was not Bush's fault, failing to send in the Guard and lock down the city after the fact was. The Hurricane wasn't Bush's fault, but failing to assert active leadership in encouraging evacuations and protecting the civilian populations was. Putting a horse showman at the head of a critical Federal agency is certainly Bush's fault.

Finally, the government, through its ongoing efforts to hold back Lake Ponchatrain and the Mississippee, encouraged people to live in flood-prone areas. Without the massive Corps programs, no one lives in the 9th Ward. Therefore, the FEDERAL government owes a unique debt to those people. A just solution would involve paying to move the inhabitants of the lowest lying areas to higher ground elsewhere. Turn those areas back into wetlands, but take care of the people who were drawn to those areas because of decisions and investments paid for by the Federal Government.

C. Morris,

Yeah, you know I'm just yankin' your chain... all in fun.

My point is that although the Right blames him for everything, America as a whole sure doesn't... never did in fact.

I agree, Bubba's no Liberal. Maybe that's why the Right hates him so much... because he stole the Conservative's thunder?

Leo T,

Tend toward agreement.

Its amazing how the same people who decry the state of health care at Walter Reed on the other hand advocate some form of govermental socialized medicine. Walter Reed is a goverment hospital! A goverment run medical facility. Look at the problems at Walter Reed and you are looking at a foreshadowing of what socialized medicine may look like.
