The tax deadline looms.

With any luck, however, your tax bill won't look like President Bush's or Vice President Dick Cheney's. The president reported today paying $186,378 in income taxes, the vice president $413,326.

President and Mrs. Bush reported taxable income of $642,905 for 2006, the White House reports.

Cheney and his wife reported an income of $1.6 million.

The first family's 2006 income included both the president's salary of $400,000 and investment income from trusts in which his assets are held.

The Bushes also contributed $78,100 to churches and charitable organizations, including the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, the federal government’s Combined Federal Campaign, Operation Smile, Martha’s Table, the Salvation Army, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Yellow Ribbon Support Center.

The vice president's income included his salary of $208,575 and a pension benefit of $27,500 which he received as a former director of Union Pacific Corporation. He became eligible for this last year, when he turned 65.

The tax return also reports Lynne Cheney’s book royalty income, which includes a partial advance on a book she is writing about growing up in Wyoming. It includes income from her work at the American Enterprise Institute and a pension benefit of $32,000, which she received as a former director of Reader’s Digest. The pension benefits, the White House notes, are not dependent on any changes in the earnings or revenues of either company.

During the course of 2006, the White House reports, the Cheneys paid $464,789 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments. The Cheneys elected to apply the resulting $51,463 tax overpayment to their 2007 estimated tax payments.

The Cheneys donated $104,425 to charity in 2006.

I bet those Halliburton dividends were doozies!

"With any luck, however, your tax bill won't look like President Bush's or Vice President Dick Cheney's."?

With any luck, I'll have the income big enough to pay taxes that come out so large.

Tipical libral media.

So what if our leeder and vise leeder are rich.

They worked hard for there money.

They deserve evry pennie of it.

Johnny D is more giving than Darth Cheney

Bet they'd really make a bundle if they knew how to do their jobs.

Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)

(Marvin Gaye/James Nyx)

Dah, dah, dah, dah
dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have nots
Money, we make it
'Fore we see it you take it
Oh, make you wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
This ain't livin', This ain't livin'
No, no baby, this ain't livin'
No, no, no
Inflation no chance
To increase finance
Bills pile up sky high
Send that boy off to die
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Hang ups, let downs
Bad breaks, set backs
Natural fact is
I can't pay my taxes
Oh, make me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God know where we're heading
Oh, make me wanna holler
They don't understand
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah

Obviously none of this was performance based pay.

OK.... this really isn't news. Although it does set up a good punchline.

I honestly wish the President were paid more. It's kind've sad, but the job of President of the United States pays less than 1/3 as much as the job of being the last guy off the Bulls' bench.

dave,

The last guy off the Bull's bench has more talent.

Dave,

They're not in it for the money.

Anybody running for president is swimming in money to begin with by our standards. Plus, afterwards they have massive lecture fees and book deals.

But besides just not needing the salary, it's primarily about ego -- and hopefully about some kind of political vision.

Clearly all the derision the Loony Lefts shows to those who donate to charities is solid proof that most Loony Lefters don't give. No surprise. Loony Lefters want other people to give in taxes or donations, but not themselves. Can't put their money where they mouths are. Again, no surprise.

The moral, emotional emptiness that is the Loony Left.

That isn't going to come close to covering what they've cost us.

Roman,

I've seen your brains on display here, you are going to need luck.

Nice... I laughed

Our country has such a large deficit, yet individuals making so much money are only paying in effect just over 25% of their taxable income gets me sick!

Something needs to be done with our tax laws to make those who can easily afford it to pay more taxes and help reduce the treasury deficit.

John D,

My, aren't we painting with a broad brush.

And you know "Looney Lefters" don't contribute to charity how?

Just keep repeating lies, half-truths and innuendo long enough John D and maybe, just maybe somebody will believe you. You know, like the dead-enders who still think (like you) that Dubya & Darth have a clue.

Interesting that the Tribune web page chose not to report on Mr. Cheney's visit to the American Girl Place in Chicago. He was mobbed by little girls seeking his autograph and to have their photos taken with him. A nice human moment...obviously not worthy of print in the Tribune web page. It would be a pleasant change to see more human interest articles about people from both parties. It would help to diffuse the rancor that we see reported daily from Washington.

Would that be their ego or yours,Juanblabo!

Let's see, according to my lucky brain;

George Bush flies in the world's most expensive corporate jet, lives in the most expensive, biggest home in Washington, has a fleet of the most expensive limousines, has the world's best security, has the nicest office, & the best office, cooking, cleaning, maintanence staff in DC, yet only paid $186,378 in taxes.

I wonder who picks-up the rest?

Maybe the rich need another tax-cut.

I think the lottery is your only hope.

Should the President of the United States take the Greyhound Bus? live in a 1200 sq ft, 3 bedroom home in the middle of DC?, drive a Chevy Caviler? be unprotected?, work in a 6' x 8' cubicle? and et at McDonalds?

Considering the office only pays $400K per year for the most important job in the world, the "perqs" are probably warranted.

All of those "perqs" are part of his job. The office calls for 24/7/365.

I wonder when, an if, the time comes a democrat is occupying this office, if you will complain as loudly?

Kasha, I'm sure it was a wonderful photo op. A pre-screened group of campaign contributors send their little girls to clamor for cheney's autograph while they shop for $100 dolls. And he didn't shoot any of them...how touching. Maybe they'll cover it in that Moonie owned Republican rag, the Washington Times. Oh sorry, is my rancor showing?

While true, the fact is if these little girls understood the horrors this man is responsible for throughout the world, they would have ran in terror.

And what the heck was Cheney doing at American Girl? Ir would have been a "nice human moment" if he visited some of the children that have no hope of affording an American Girl doll.

This is the kind of luck I need;

I need a father who was smart enough to go to Yale & generous enough to donate millions back to them. This way, with grades so crappy that I can't get into Yale on my own, I'll just coast thru this ivy league school because I'm lucky to have legacy status.

The rest of us, like myself, just need to earn our way to a college degree.

I'll only complain about having a democrat in office if tax breaks to corporations & the rich happen agian.

As to people who are in the upper stratosphere of income levels, please, quit crying about how much your taxes are.

Well, Terry, conservatives and people who are anti-Democratic politicians (like yourself) have raised a huge stink over former Vice-President Al Gore's electrical bill in his 10,000 sq ft house - which is also his office for him and his wife, not to mention his Secret Service detail. And that his natural gas bill so many of your kind bitched about covers the building housing his Secret Service detail too, not just his house. Or how many of your side of the political spectrum have raised a huge stink over John Edward's house that he's building, paid for by his profession as a lawyer for many years. All of your kind act as if he has NO RIGHT to build the kind of house that he wants and can afford.

I haven't seen a Republican or a conservative say, "Hey! They EARNED the right to live in a house of that size because of what they do for a living, how long they've done it, the success of their investments, etc. So everybody shut up!" Can you post some links to web sites where Republican and conservatives say ANYTHING like that regarding Democratic politicians? Can you?

George Bush... lives in the most expensive, biggest home in Washington
Posted by: RomanB | Apr 14, 2007 8:50:21 AM

Not even close. I live in DC, grew up in Chicago, and there are mansions inside this city that dwarf the White House and are most directly comparable to a Lake Forest estate. No city I have been to has such magnificent single-family properties within a stone's throw from downtown.

BC,

I have no problem with Edwards, Gore, etc.... living in big mansions, using private jets, having large utility bills, leaving a huge carbon footprint - if you will.

My problem is when these same people will tell middle America to trade in their SUV's, donwsize their housing, and do all this other "environmentally friendly" behaviors, but they don't lead by example.

It's called hypocracy. Do as I say, not as I do!

Roman,

Would that include daddy's who were US Senators? How about US ambassadors and sent their children to European prep schools?

Who are these children you ask? These are the last two democratic presidential canidates, who by the way have a lower IQ than the Harvard MBA whokicked their butt.
