President Bush is speaking about the Iraq war supplemental appropriations bill at an American Legion post in Fairfax, Va.

The Senate is debating stem cell research legislation this week.

April 9 - 15. WORLD BANK/IMF

April 10 - 11. MEDICAL ISOTOPES-URANIUM — The National Research Council sponsors a conference on making medical istopes without highly enriched uranium. Most medical istopes are produced by irradiating highlgy enriched uranium, which can be used to make nuclear weapons. This meeting is being held by a National Research Council committee to examine the feasibilityof using low-enriched uranium in the process, making it a less dangerous option.

April 10 - 11. NANOMATERIALS-MEDICINE — As part of the Sackler Colloquium Series, The National Academy of Sciences sponsors a symposium to explore the development of nanoscale materials that can be used medically -- for example, to detect and diagnose tumors.
6 p.m. George Whitesides of Harvrd University delivers the keynote lecture.

April 10 - 12. ENERGY MARKETS — The Federal Trade Commission holds a conference, “Energy Markets in the 21st Century: Competition Policy in Perspective.”

April 10 - 13. SMART CARDS — The Smart Cards Alliance sponsors the 6th Annual Smart Cards in Government Conference 2007.

8:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. US-CHINA RELATIONS — The Council on Foreign Relations sponsors a discussion of “U.S.-China Relations: An Affirmative Agenda, a Responsible Course,” a report of an independent task force. Participants: Dennis C. Blair, Institute for Defense Analyses, and former Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Command Task Force chairmn; Carla A. 10:30 a.m. STEM CELL RESEARCH — Senators Tom Harkin, Arlen Specter, Ted Kennedy, Orrin Hatch and Dianne Feinstein join Sean Tipton, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research; Caitlin McEnery, Georgetown University student; and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for a press conference to urge the Senate to pass the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (S.5).

10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. WOMEN-RECONSTRUCTION — The United States Institute of Peace, Women in International Security, and the Joan B. 11 a.m. HOLOCAUST MUSEUM-DARFUR — The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Google will announce a unique initiative that will bring attention to the ongoing crisis in Darfur. It is the first project of a Museum initiative using Google Earth technology to highlight the problem of genocide worldwide. Speakers at the event launch who will be available for interviews are: Elliot Schrage, Google Vice President, Global Communications and Public Affairs; Sara J. Bloomfield, Director, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; John Heffernan, Director, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Genocide Prevention Initiative; and Daowd Salih, a Darfurian refugee.

1 p.m. LATIN AMERICA — Georgetown University holds a discussion on “A Bipartisan Vision of Latin America, with International Republican institute President Lorne Craner and National Democratic Institute President kenneth Wollack.

1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. HOMELAND SECURITY-INFRASTRUCTURE — The Department of Homeland Security’s Infrastructure Advisory Council holds a meeting.

2 p.m. OIL USE — Energy Secretary Bodman, EPA Administrator Steve Johnson and National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator Nicole Nason hold a news conference to discuss EPA’s final Renewable Fuel Standard, which increases the use of alternative fuels and modernizes CAFE standards for cars.

5:30 p.m. FAA-DISABLED VETERANS — Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Marion Blakey and Department of Veterans Affairs Undersecretary for Benefits Adm. Daniel Cooper will hold an unveiling ceremony for a joint FAA/VA Veterans Employment Program called “A Hero to the Nation--A Hero to the Skies.”

5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. SWEDEN-ICE EXHIBITION — Press tour and Inaugural reception for the House of Sweden’s “Water and Environment” display, which will will introduce two fresh ice exhibitions from Northern Sweden. The blocks of ice began their journey 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the Swedish village of Jukkasjdrvi and will circle the sundial in front of House of Sweden, accompanied by photographs of ice and water from April 10-22. So, the right-wing Chicago Tribune this morning comes out in favor of the EPA regulating Greenhouse Gas emissions in cars.

Bruce, Paulo and Jeff must be going nuts.

I hope the Tribune also made note of the four lunatics on the Supreme Court who fought against such a decision. I'm sure the Trib helped put them where they are.
