Organizers for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's first Chicago fundraising effort did a good job of playing down expectations, saying for weeks that they only expected about 50 donors and $100,000 at the Palmer House Hilton Monday night.

By Tuesday morning, sources associated with the New York senator's presidential bid were saying the event drew about 300 people and raised $310,000. Not bad for a few hours of work.

In attendance was J.B. Pritzker. The Tribune first reported Monday that he has signed on to her campaign as the national chairman of Citizens for Hillary, a new campaign initiative that will be charged with grass-roots outreach, fundraising and policy matters. His sister, Penny Pritzker, is Sen. Barack Obama's national finance chairwoman.
