The alleged terrorist plotters accused today of seeking to launch an attack using assault weapons on the Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey were, if the law enforcement officials are correct, precisely the kind of violent jihadists group that has been seen more in Europe than in the U.S.

The arrests of the six men will likely place renewed focus on the nation's border security since several of the alleged terrorists were here illegally.

It's too soon to know how strong the federal government's case is though the case outlined by law enforcement officials today appeared very compelling.

Here's part of the Associated Press story about the arrests.

By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Writer

FORT DIX, N.J. (AP) — Six foreign-born Muslims were arrested and accused Tuesday of plotting to attack the Army's Fort Dix and massacre scores of U.S. soldiers — a plot the FBI says was foiled when the men took a video of themselves firing assault weapons to a store to have the footage put onto a DVD.

The defendants, all men in their 20s from the former Yugoslavia and the Middle East, include a pizza deliveryman suspected of using his job to scout out the military base.

Authorities said there was no direct evidence connecting them to any international terror organizations such as al-Qaida. But several of the men said they were ready to kill and die "in the name of Allah," according to court records.

Their goal was "to kill as many American soldiers as possible" in attacks with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and guns, prosecutors said.

"Today we dodged a bullet. And looking at the weapons they were trying to obtain, we dodged a lot of bullets," said FBI agent J.P. Weiss.

Weiss also saluted the store clerk who noticed the suspicious video as the "unsung hero" of the case. "That's why we're here today — because of the courage and heroism of that individual," Weiss said.

Investigators said they infiltrated the group with an informant well over a year ago and bided their time while they secretly recorded the defendants, five of whom lived in Cherry Hill, a Philadelphia suburb about 20 miles from Fort Dix.

"This is what law enforcement is supposed to do in the post-9/11 era — stay one step ahead," U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said.

One of the most striking moments was when Christie was asked how much damage he thought the alleged plotters could've done. He cited the Virginia Tech shootings to show what just one determined gunman could accomplish. It was a chilling thought. And meant to be.

According to reports I've read, these guys weren't too bright--they made some kind of terrorist recruiting video, then took it to a commercial place to have copies made. Naturally, the clerk alerted the authorities.

These people just don't scare me. They're bright enough to be Bush appointees, but that's about it.

This group of nitwits is almost as dumb as the Miami bunch.Probably not much of a real threat but you never know. The "cells" that have been uncovered have been groups of losers. Thankfully, they been people that have very limited abilities. A quick, severe punishment is called for here. With emphasis on quick to get the message out to misfits that there is a price for their pipe dreams.

If law enforcement infiltrated this group a year ago and these dummies were trying to buy weapons from an FBI informant what is the significance of the video store clerk?

Sounds more like the FBI dodged six pinhead wannabes.

Shades of the Miami, Liberty City "terrorist army" maybe? According to the FBI in that case, Narseal Batiste wanted to build his Miami jihad with $50 grand. That would support an army of ten for about two weeks. His al-qaeda contact turned out to be an FBI informant too. More than likely Batiste thought he could scam the guy out of $50K. What ever happened to those guys?

homeland security indeed, LOL.

You never know whether you can believe these guys or not anymore, they announced the arrests of these wannabe's the day after the poll numbers came out showing W. at an alltime low 28% approval rating.

Is this part of the bunch we're fighting over there so we don't have to fight them over here?

Emphasis on "ALLEGED."

John E,

Are they wannebes like you are a wannabe veteran? Go mow the lawn at Huskie Stadium you liar. Nice job saying you fought in Iraq you loser.

Rich Hill

Increasingly methinks you deranged leftists are all products of the Chicago school system, right? Or was no school involved??? Just asking.

I thought if we fought them in Iraq, terrorists wouldn't be walking down Main Street, USA?

The "religion of peace" strikes again.

More from the AP story (the part Frank James omitted):

"In addition to plotting the attack on Fort Dix, the defendants spoke of assaulting a Navy installation in Philadelphia during the annual Army-Navy football game and conducted surveillance at other military installations in the region, prosecutors said.

One defendant, Eljvir Duka, was recorded as saying: "In the end, when it comes to defending your religion, when someone ... attacks your religion, your way of life, then you go jihad."

The six were arrested Monday night trying to buy AK-47 assault weapons, M-16s and other weapons from an FBI informant, authorities said.

They appeared in federal court Tuesday in Camden and were ordered held without bail for a hearing Friday. Five were charged with conspiracy to kill U.S. military personnel; the sixth was charged with aiding and abetting illegal immigrants in obtaining weapons.

Four of the men were born in the former Yugoslavia, one was born in Jordan and one came from Turkey, authorities said. All had lived in the United States for years. Three were in the United States illegally; two had green cards allowing them to stay in this country permanently; and the sixth is a U.S. citizen.

One defendant, Mohamad Ibrahim Shnewer, spoke of using rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons to kill at least 100 soldiers, according to court documents.

"My intent is to hit a heavy concentration of soldiers," he was quoted as saying. "You hit four, five or six Humvees and light the whole place (up) and retreat completely without any losses."

"It doesn't matter to me whether I get locked up, arrested or get taken away," another defendant, Serdar Tatar, was alleged to have said. "Or I die, it doesn't matter. I'm doing it in the name of Allah."

The men trained by playing paintball in the woods in New Jersey and taking target practice at a firing range in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, where they had rented a house, authorities said.

They often watched terror training videos, clips featuring
Osama bin Laden, a tape containing the last will and testament of some of the Sept. 11 hijackers, and tapes of armed attacks on U.S. military personnel, erupting in laughter when one plotter noted that a Marine's arm was blown off in an ambush, authorities said."

Note the bin Laden and 9/11 mentions Frank James left out of his article, perhaps because mention of this would cause people to focus on the enemy we face. And that enemy isn't crazed Mennonites or Jihadist Lutherans.

Good Work! by WHICHEVER group -- DHS, CIA/FBI, local police, or combinations thereof -- who stopped this from being a tragedy.

Unfortunately, this incident only makes it obvious that the "we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here" argument is patently porous. Fighting (and, actually CREATING) terrorists in Iraq doesn't make us any less at-risk in this country, or anywhere else in the world where terrorists could potentially strike.

Bruce, the jihadist christians are busy blowing up abortion clinics.

Would an attack on Ft. Dix really by a "terrorist" attack? It is, after all, a military installation. Was Cho's assault at VA Tech terrorism? Or are only Islamists capable of doing so? Is bombing an abortion clinic terrorism?

What exactly is terrorism? Or is it simply a fungible political term designed to mean simply what politicians wish it to mean to justify their ends?

Unfortunately it's the latter. Several liberal media outlets, Sen Tom Daschle's Senate office and others were exposed to Anthrax following 9/11, yet goons on here say that there has never been a terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11. Then Cho went rampaging and a few right wingers compared him to Bin Laden, Zarqawi, and Tim McVeigh and yet when prompted again they claim that there has not been an attack on the US soil since 9/11.

PS The Anthrax killer is still at large 5 years later

An article in today's New York Sun that no Tribune reporter will tell you about:

"Islamist-Left Alliance A Growing Force

"Where else can you sit down in a single evening and listen to senior people from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, people from the revolutionary left and the antiwar movement from around the globe?"

— British Trotskyite John Rees at the Cairo Anti-War Conference, April 2007

Over the past year, multiple international conferences have featured leaders of the anti-global left and Islamist groups working together. Go to any anti-war or anti-globalization demonstration in the West and chances are you will see the flags of Hezbollah and Hamas waved by people wearing Che Guevara T-shirts. And at some of these meetings, members of such radical Islamist groups as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and Hezbollah have enjoyed starring roles.

The roster of Islamist-left alliances quietly grows every day: Massachusetts Institute of Technology linguistics professor Noam Chomsky praises Hamas and denounces America on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television. London Mayor Ken Livingstone invites a leading Islamist, Sheikh Yosef Al-Qaradawi, who is known for supporting suicide attacks, to visit his city. Iranian President Ahmadinejad calls for a world without America even as he plays host to a Tehran peace conference attended by American Mennonites, Quakers, Episcopalians, Methodists, and leaders of the National Council of Churches.

The key forum at this year's annual Cairo Anti-War Conference was titled "Bridge-building Between the Left and Islam," and focused on practical ways to increase cooperation. The aim of the conference sessions were described in one piece of literature as tackling "the challenges and prospects facing the international anti-war and pro-intifada movements" and planning "strategy and tactics for bridging the gap and uniting Islamist and leftist ranks in the face of U.S. imperialism and Zionism."

The Arabic press has lauded this phenomenon. An article in Egypt's Al-Ahram Weekly praises what it refers to as "Arab activists taking the lead in the growing anti-war movement worldwide.

..."

The article goes on to detail successful Islamicist efforts to infiltrate "anti-war" and other fringe left websites.

Bruce,

Oh no, Mr. Bill! It's the Islamic/Leftist alliance! Run for your lives! Thanks for the enlightening us to the new Islamocommunist threat Bruce. I'd never have guessed that those Atheist Lefties would join forces with the Islamic Fascists. It sounds like we're facing the WWE tag team from hell!

If nothing more urgent comes up, I promise I'll duck and cover as soon as I stop laughing. Kudos to the NY Sun for uncovering this insidious plot. (Is that a moonie paper or a supermarket tabloid?) They sound like they could be a formidable competitor to The Onion.

Bruce,
You left out Republican ambassador David Duke's visit to Iran to attend a gathering to deny the Holocaust. Why? Oh yeah and President Bush and VP Cheney kissing and holding hands with Saudi Arabian royal family

Bruce:
Do you know the voting record of Steve Stalinsky for the last 4 presidential elections? Don't you think we here at the swamp deserve to know facts like this before we read his article so we can objectively review his potential bias? How about yours or do you still not feel like exposing your own potential bias to the other readers here?
