McCain to Obama: It's 'flak jacket': The Swamp

The Swamp

Posted by Mark Silva at 1:10 pm, updated 2:15 pm CDT

Here we go: You know the campaign is heating up when Sen. John McCain of Arizona takes a full-bore shot at Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois -- "two years in the U.S. Senate'' -- for misspelling flak jacket.

Never mind that it's some young campaign worker who actually types these things, but the McCain campaign proved quick on the draw just now when the Obama campaign responded to McCain's complaint that Obama's vote against the supplemental war funding bill amounts to "a white flag to al Qaeda.''

The Obama campaign took its own sweet time in responding to McCain's original attack. But this is what Obama said in response, in a written statement circulated by his campaign:

"This country is united in our support for our troops, but we also owe them a plan to relieve them of the burden of policing someone else's civil war. Governor Romney and Senator McCain clearly believe the course we are on in Iraq is working, but I do not. If there ever was a reflection of that it's the fact that Senator McCain required a flack jacket, ten armored Humvees, two Apache attack helicopters, and 100 soldiers with rifles by his side to stroll through a market in Baghdad just a few weeks ago.''

The McCain camp came back with this: "While Sen. Obama's two years in the U.S. Senate certainly entitle him to vote against funding our troops, my service and experience combined with conversations with military leaders on the ground in Iraq lead me to believe that we must give this new strategy a chance to succeed because the consequences of failure would be catastrophic to our nation's security.

"By the way, Senator Obama, it's a 'flak' jacket, not a 'flack' jacket."

It's Obama's turn. (One Crakerjak Swamp commentator quoted below already has offered a cue, with another sort of jacket.)

Nice try "Baghdad is Safe" McCain.

The Republo-fascists are really afraid of Obama. Pretty soon they're going to have to start eating each other or they can just go ahead and hand the GOP keys over to CrossDresser Rudy for 08 right now.

Senator McCain is right - Spelling is a far more important skill for a President than being able to make realistic assements about the security situation in Iraq.

Senator McCain, how do you spell deluded?

For you Mr.McCain it's called a "Straight Jacket".

Questions for McCain

How do you spell the following words

Reality
Civil War
Quagmire
Occupier

Other Questions

Why did we go to Iraq again?

Have you ever read a history of Iraq? If so who was the last country to successfully invade and occupy Iraq?

How many troops do you really think are needed to successfully occupy Iraq?

Seeing as how our military is so over extended that troops are being forced to extend their tours and National Guard troops (many of whom don't have the proper equipment) are being sent to Iraq how do you propose we save the military?

Is it okay with you that many soldiers are on their third or fourth tours?

If we plan on staying in Iraq and military experts say that 300,000 troops are needed to complete "the mission" would you be open to a draft?

Is their a "backdoor draft" going on right now? Is that okay with you?

If their is a "backdoor draft" how does that "support the troops?"

Define "support the troops."

Many think that your tour of the market in Baghdad was a (poorly conceived and poorly performed) publicity stunt. Is it all right with you to use soldiers as publicity for your presidential election?

If it is okay to use soldiers for publicity would you ever consider flying onto an aircraft carrier to give a speech in front of a "mission accomplished" sign?

I could just keep going and going......

By the way, R.L., it's straitjacket.

but wouldn't having this vast fund of strategic knowledge we are all sure BO possesses entail knowledge of military issues and use? are we to take it on faith that BO has the foggiest idea of any issue related to national security based on being a law lecturer at U of C? has he been there recently assessing the situation or does he get what knowledge he needs from the Daily Kos?

McCain's campaign team includes Terry Nelson, one of the nastiest strategists in the business, and the king of attack ads. For someone who wants to appear above ugly politics, McCain will surely wake up with fleas.

Don't set me off Mark! Have a great weekend.

Barak is all talk, no ability to fight evil. He supports death to the innocent, death to children through abortion, but protection of the wicked, evil men involved in terror. Thank God for McCain speaking the truth in love.

Where Mr Obamais correct, in stating that McCain
needed such protection to walk through a market
higlights the fact that the legally elected and democratic leader of Iraq would need that much protection, or more, and so would his legally
and democratic government. So would any govenment, even if the any faction of the muslim extrime takes over, and commits genocide, which they seem intent on doing, they would also need protection. the difference is that our government
in partnership with the elected government of Iraq, DOES have more of the Iraqui public safety
in mind for the present. I too welcome a change,
but at the time, more would die with out our help.
Insulting either politician does not help! Of course they don't care so much here in Chicago because it's a community with less political options than most of the country, and rabid knee
jerk opinions, or even slighltly insulting opinions, are common, but not helpful.

You couldn't make this up.

Hey Mark,

From Answers.com:
strait·jack·et also straight·jack·et (strāt'jăk'ĭt)

More questions for McCain:

You consider yourself a fiscal conservative but continue to fund a dreadfully expensive war and tax cuts for billionaires. Given the astronomical cost of the war and the exploding national debt do you think tax increases are needed?

Since you don't (come on, no way he will say yes to the above question) think tax increases are necessary do you think it is all right to just charge the war on the national credit card?

Every child born today will inherit a $40,000 tax bill for mistakes made by a Republican Congress and a Republican President. Some call this a "birth tax." How can you consider yourself "pro life" when your (and your parties) actions are dooming the unborn who do get born into a life as a debtor?

Our deficit is largely being funded by countries like China, Saudi Arabia and others who don't have America's best interest in heart. Is that a good thing?

OH SNAP! You got him increasingly irrelevent John!

ZING!

Say, you should start correcting Dubya's grammar. After all, it was when you hitched your wagon to his falling star that your campaign really started to show how stale it is.

If I can recap: when Bush was popular, you frequently (and rightly) called him to the mat. With each drop in his approval, you stepped up the ferocity of your defense of him and his ruinous policies.

Who's the dummy here again?

...and to boot, you're wrong. Either spelling is correct. OOPS!

"...no ability to fight evil"

Seriously, Erik? No ability to fight evil?

Did you accidentally veer off of the Dungeons and Dragons board?

It's a telling sign of Obama's military knowledge if I've ever seen one.

I love the sarcasm this is dripping with, too:
"While Sen. Obama's two years in the U.S. Senate certainly entitle him to vote against funding our troops..."

Give it to 'im, McCain!

1. Flack is a legit alternative spelling. Look it up.

2. In the case of Mr. McCain's "Mission Accomplished" moment, I think the most common definition of flack works too. Maybe someone made a freudian slip?.

- to serve as a press agent or publicist
- to promote; publicize
- one who provides publicity
- to provide publicity : engage in press-agentry

That's an awesome correction, Silva. I'd like to see some of these jokers in a newsroom. I don't think they'd last.

Chripes... that'd be a weak retort amongst a couple of bickering fourth grade girls.

"Like, it's spelled F l a k. Duuuuhh! What...everrrrr!"

Is this really what our politics have become. Could you imagine the dignified presidents of the past... Thomas Jefferson, Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, etc. resorting to such juvenile public displays?

This is embarassing.

Why is it, almost invariably, when someone thinks they can attack someone else by pointing out a spelling error, they either are wrong themselves or make more spelling errors.

According to Webster's dictionary, flack is also a variant spelling of flak. So Obama was not wrong, and McCain was just grasping at straws.

nisleib...good questions all, here's the central question posed by Lt. General William E. Odom, U.S. Army (Ret.): "What's wrong with cutting and running?"....ASK THIS:

You're all wrong. It's flak jaket.

In my opinion, Senator McCain was simply counter-punching a jab thrown by Senator Obama's camp. Which should be expected.

It's all fair in 'politics about war'.

If this is as nasty as the rhetoric is going to get between these two ... it will be a good thing!

That's my $00.02

Troops wear flak jackets.

Politicians wear flack jackets.

Got it?

From the next Conrad Black,Billy/Jeff.

McCain has lost it. He's like a relic from a different age. Most likely the stone age. Silly old fossil. Please retire!!!

Bill/Jeff,

You should know better since you're a rightwing copyboy, huh?

It would appear that Senator McCain is trying to wrap up the "Spelling Queen" vote. Hmmm, taking flack from a flake over flak.

Senatur McKane has lossed it.
He shoud go bak and sing his "Bom Bom Bom, Bom Bom Baran"

Whatever it is...it's what you need to walk through Bagdad in any market place.

Jeff/Bill,
It's pretty pathetic that this is what your campaign has to stoop to in order to generate excitement. No new ideas, no vision for America, just pointing out a spelling error made by a junior Senator. This reeks of desperation. Send him more money Jeff/Bill!!

Are spelling attacks worthy of the Senator who worked both sides of the aisle in Congress?

Spelling attacks are far less important than fixing the problem with the House Ethics Committee back in 2004. And Senator McCain, who could work both sides of the aisle was to play a role.

That was the year that the House Ethics Committee showed it mettle with the annoying American citizens demanding an investigation of Mr. Tom DeLay - one of the House Ethics Committee's own.

But it was said that Senator McCain would work with a multi party team to cleanse the House Ethics Committee.

The House Ethics Committee would have its name renovated - it would be called THE NEW HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE.

Job done!

I don't know what's worse, that they bothered to point it out or that it actually got someone like Jeff so excited.

It's funny. Correction. In light of the fact that American soldiers are dying and McCain is making a spelling correction as if it is some hard-hitting point is a disgrace. Even worse is losers like Jeff are high-fiving eachother over it. Talk about lack of perspective. American politics really are a sad joke sometimes.

Why would McCain's campaign think it is wise to bring up the correct spelling of flak jacket. Didn't this monster send our soldiers to war with inadequate and in some cases no flak jackets as well as poorly armored vehicles?

What McCain should realize, being the veteran that he is, is that most of the soldiers from, this war with multiple amputations and severe head injuries would have died in Viet Nam. The only reason the death toll from this war is as low as it is right now, is modern medicine and lessons learned from previous wars.

54,000 people died in 10 years in Nam. How many of today's permanently wounded soldiers would have been among the dead 30 years ago? That is the question to ask ones self when discussing this war and its statistics.

Tribune care to write an article and get an opinion from any career doctors in the veteran's administration? They've seen it all.

McCain's desperate.

When a "Baghdad's safe" combat veteran is getting his behind kicked by a "varmint hunter" in Republican Land you know Alice in Wonderland is the saner of the two.

Mark, you just keep dishing up the great parody song ideas!

This could be Mr. McCain's campaign song, or perhaps even the Republican National Convention theme song!

(B Joel)

I've been stranded in the combat zone
I walked through Hanoi alone
Even flew a Thud105 in the rain
And you told me not to fly
But I made it home alive
So you said that only proves that I'm insane

You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just might be a lunatic you're looking for
Turn out the light
Don't try to save me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right

Remember how I found you there
Alone in your electric chair
I told you dirty jokes until you smiled
You were lonely for a man
I said take me as I am
'Cause you might enjoy some madness for awhile

You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for
It's too late to fight
It's too late to change me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right

You may be wrong but you may be right
You may be wrong but you may be right

I really want to like McCain, but how can you take anything he says seriously? During Vietnam we were all pummeled with the dire certainty of the "domino effect", the unbridled spread of Communism if we lost the war. Now I look at the tag on the inside of my shirt and it reads "made in Vietnam".

McCain says that leaving Iraq would be "catastrophic to our Nation's security." If that's really the case, why haven't we implemented a draft? Why aren't we raising taxes to pay for the war? Where is the rationing, where are the war bonds? Where is the sacrifice at home?

Instead, we're told by Bush to shop till we drop. Those you don't have loved ones in Iraq think sporting a yellow ribbon on their SUV constitutes sacrifice. If you believe Bush and McCain, western civilization as we know it depends on the U.S. succeeding in Iraq, whatever that means.

I call b.s. on the whole argument. I also call b.s. on the ongoing Republican strategy to compare the quagmire in Iraq to WWII, the U.S. Civil War, and on and on. Yeah, a few thousand Al Qaeda jihadist' are equivalent to the German Wehrmacht, Al Qaeda's Luftwaffe is in the air as we speak, U-boats are preying on our harbors. Stop it already.

Oh, but next they'll be smuggling nukes into the country, we're told. Well if they could, the war in Iraq wouldn't effect their ability to do so one way or another. Besides, which Middle East Country is most responsible for exporting nuclear technology to hostile regimes?, Pakistan. Yeah, our ardent allies who also harbor the person most responsible for 9-11, Osama bin Laden.

Then there's the relative casualty b.s. 17,000+ plus Union and Confederate troops died in "The Wilderness" over a period of three days, so what's the fuss over 3500 troops in Iraq over five years?, argue the right-wing pundits. As if a war of choice in Iraq based on lies in any way compares to the Civil War either in circumstance or consequence. Bruce is the expert here, yet he perpetuates this bogus analogy.

Supporters of the Iraq fiasco will go to any length to try and justify the unjustifiable. They say they support the troops yet have no qualms about throwing scores more into the Iraq meat-grinder, for what, Bush's version of "Peace with honor"? How many years and how many lives need to be sacrificed before the chickenhawks are satisfied that Iraq cannot be fixed by military means?

They can't tell you. They can't even define success. They can't even define progress. In Bush's twisted logic the "surge" must be working because the terrorist are perpetuating more violence because they're afraid we'll "stay the course".

Or, there's the alternate logic. If violence is down in one area where we have a concentration of troops, never-mind that things are disintegrating all around (McCain himself, called it the "whack-a-mole" phenomenon), the "surge" must be working.

So, you see, these clowns will twist things around any-which way to support their failed strategies. And those fine patriots on Reich-nut radio will echo the lies and keep the 28%'s fervently behind perhaps the biggest foreign policy disaster in American History.

C. Morris,

That may be your best song parody yet (although "Propane" was priceless). I'm sure Leo T. and Johnny D. would agree.

Looks like we got them all riled, up, eh Mark? To the uninitiated: Flack is a slang term for a spokesperson or other PR mouthpiece that's generally nothing more than a shield for his or her boss. Flak is a term for actual bullets. One is derived from the other but flack is spelled differently to denote that it's an actual person and the spelling change is also there because it's closer to the term "hack," which means a lousy writer. Journalists work daily with public relations professionals and vice versa so the back and forth that goes on between the two groups (and many journalists move from one group to the other) puts them in both adversarial and symbiotic relationships. Therefore it's often the case that journalists think PR people are flacks and PR people think journalists are hacks. But the term "flack" has nothing to do with actual war, unless you're talking about the briefing room.

To the people posting the "dictionary.com" listings, I have news for you: you wouldn't last very long in the newsroom. Why not try a definition with some credibility? Like, I don't know, maybe Merriam-Webster's New World Dictionary? Used by most media organizations? You know, the direct lexicographical heir of Noah Webster? In 1843, the company bought the rights to the 1841 edition of Webster's magnum opus, An American Dictionary of the English Language, Corrected and Enlarged and has published the most complete U.S. dictionary every year since.

Here's what Webster's has to say about "Flack:"

Main Entry: 1flack
Pronunciation: 'flak
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
: one who provides publicity; especially : PRESS AGENT
- flack·ery /'fla-k(&-)rE/ noun

What's that? No bullets? But, but the Obamessiah can't be wrong, can he? Newsflash, kiddies, you're all wrong and someone who knows what they're talking about corrected you. Again.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=flack

p.s. Loon, Conrad Black is not now, nor ever was a reporter or journalist. He is a businessman who owned newspapers but the only bylines he ever got were for editorials. I guess it's too much to expect you to actually READ the articles you get your talking points from, eh? Keep up the name-calling kids, it's invigorating me.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary & the Columbia Guide to the English Language either spelling is acceptable. Whats sad is that McCain thought this was important enough that it needed to be called out. Whats sadder is that other people thought it was important enough that it needed to be reported on.

Whatever side you're on,the next Civil War some of you will face will be right here! And like the South, the good guys will lose and the greed of the politians will have given the world another 3rd world country.

I'll be teh lsat to criticze any apelling errors

To those who defend the incorrect spelling; "flack" jacket...
The flak jacket was developed during WWII in order to protect pilots and air crew from the the explosive force and shrapnel thrown off by flak, not "flack". What is flak? -- It's antiaircraft artillery... Known by the German term, Fliegerabwehrkanone (shortened to flak).
But, these types of spelling errors happen all the time, especially when dealing with military terminology. Another example of this is how most people spell the 1 1/4 ton vehicle utilized by the US military: the "Humvee". It's not a "Humvee", it's a HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle).

To McCain...
Come on man. You have more to offer than spelling corrections.

Julie, what's the point of your post? That military medicine should be worse? Would you rather they be dead? The whole reason that Bob Woodruff survived is because the unit he was with had a neurosurgeon in the field. I say, thank God military medicine has made such advances.

dt,

I hope JThom doesn't indict me for 'plagerism'(sic).

PS: 'Lunatic' posting.

Before some right winger goes nuts pointing out that the F105 Thunderchief was an Air Force strike fighter, not a Navy A6 Intruder, save your breath.

I am aware of that fact. These parody songs are meant to be 'impressionism' not 'super-realism'.

Have a nice day.

Wow Jeff,

I see the Medill School of Journalism helped you stay on top your game, at least as far as etymology is concerned. Yeah, you're a regular Anthony Burgess. But before you get too smug and "invigorated" by your perceived superiority, remember, you're one of the 28% er's ready to walk off the proverbial cliff with this administration. Too bad Northwestern wasted all that effort just to crank out more Ovis aries for the Neocon movement, or in your case, the Theocon movement.

Jeff:
Did you look at all 4 entries Websters has for 'Flack'?
http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=flack
How about entry number 2:
Main Entry: 2flack
variant of FLAK

How about that, Merriam-Webster's online dictionary seems to think that 'Flack' is an acceptable variant for 'Flak'. Imagine that, according to the source you cited as the authority on the English language 'Flack' actually does have something to do with real war. Whats really funny is if you look a little deeper into Websters you will find that they say 'Flak' in acceptable variant for 'Flack' So, all in all, what we have here is much ado about nothing, isn't it?

P.S. One of McCain's aids just pulled a sheet over Obama with this one. Maybe he should leave war to the adults and stick to the kids table, eh?

"Obama wouldn't know the difference between an RPG and a bong."

McCain may be a bit past his prime, but to paraphrase Toby Keith:

"I ain't as good as I once was
But I'm as good once as I ever was"

What a GREAT start to the weekend. A decorated veteran kicking the Senate's most know-it-all newbie effortlessly to the curb. If only Obama would've taken the opportunity to shut up when he had it.

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Is this the 7th grade posting section? Republo-fascists? Fascists? In case you don't know this, you whining, carping little imp, you - you, personally - have more freedom and liberty than 99% of all human beings who have ever lived. If you think that's fascist, why don't you go live in a country where the govt tells you when to have sex, or when you can get a haircut? LOL.

EVERYTIME you hear anyone say this was a vote to support the troops call them, email them, write them, and tell them those theat voted NO are the ones that support the troops. This line of BS needs to stop NOW. It IS possible to support the troops and oppose this lie of a war. And why does the media let W say "everyone thought Iraq had WMD." NO "everyone" DID NOT. The weapons inspectors for one......but it continues and we will hear attacks on patriotism and calls to support the troops. What a disaster.

Obama reminds me of the prince of England's lover in the movie "Braveheart", when he tells the king he "is trained in military tactics and warfare" (right before the king throws him out the window).

Barack is a likable guy, but way over his head with this president thing he trying to do. We are at war, Senator Obama, with thousands of muslim fanatics that want us dead. Making believe they will disappear if we look away will invite another 9/11 attack. Please, tell us how you will protect us. Criticism is easy, but having a realistic plan has evaded most politicians, including our favorite son, Barack Obama.

dt-

A HUGE difference between Vietnam and Iraq is that the Viet Cong did not want to kill everyone all over the world like the muslim terrorists do; the VC wanted us out of their country. I can certainly understand why many Iraqis would like us out of their nation (as do most Americans), but it will not stop there. They want you, me, Obama, McCain, and everyone else in America and other civilized nations dead. We know where McCain stands on fighting terrorism, but Obama is in lala land with regard to defending the US. I like the guy, but his inexperience and naivete are starting to show.

And so does yours.

johnf-
I am not running for president; Obama is. He has no plan on how to protect us (or do you believe muslim terrorists are really peaceful, loving people who are misunderstood and just need a hug?) Time to grow up and face reality.

"A HUGE difference between Vietnam and Iraq is that the Viet Cong did not want to kill everyone all over the world like the muslim terrorists do; the VC wanted us out of their country."

Let's see... who was the right-wing boogeyman we were in 'Nam to fight, anyway? What were they called again? Oh, yes - THE COMMUNISTS!

Check with your masters, "Liz" - they can fill you in on all the previous fearmongering.

Liz,
Is this Elizabeth Bennett? Re. Nam. I don't think it was the V.C. that we were taught to fear, at least as far as our homeland security was concerned. It was Communist Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China who were aiding the communist factions in Vietnam.

Certainly Russia, with the nuclear capacity to incinerate the world a few times over, posed a bigger potential threat to the U.S. than a few thousand Muslim terrorist, yet somehow we survived.

Furthermore, there are compelling arguments that our current policies in the Middle East are creating many more terrorist, weakening our military, distancing our allies, and making us considerably less safe than before the Iraq fiasco.

Had we kept our eye on the ball, Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden, we would have had nearly universal support and been focused on a winnable war. Thanks to Bush's misguided and unnecessary Iraq invasion, things there are now totally FUBAR. Please tell me how our continued military presence there will improve things, there or here.

And please, don't tell me we're fighting the terrorist there so we don't have to fight them here. One has nothing to do with the other. If they want to engage targets in the U.S., they will, regardless of what we do in Iraq. if anything, we should devote more resources to protecting potential targets here instead of wasting hundreds of billions in Iraq.

Try it today!! The New McDonald's sandwich- The McCain BrainBurger!! It's insane!!!

Go, McCain. There's a reason Obama doesn't know how to spell flak---he has no exposure to any military operation outside of surrender, and so has no need for the word.

Let's face it, everybody: Democrat liberals can't be trusted with defense. For the entire duration of Bill Clinton's presidency, Americans were attacked in the embassy in Somalia, on the USS Cole, and last but not least, the World Trade Center in 1993, which Clinton didn't even visit until more than a year had passed. The importance of the 1993 attack, launched successfully on 9/11 by the same group, was lost on him. He was offered bin Laden by Sudan in 1998 when they had him on a plane about to depart, and Clinton waved him on for lack of evidence. Eight years of Bill culminated in 9/11. Six years of Bush, with angry muslim extremists breathing fire, and still no repeat attack. And it isn't because they suddenly decided to put down their arms and sing kumbaya as the way to world peace. It is because of the Patriot Act, detaining suspected terrorists picked up on battlegrounds, tightening the borders, and all the other "nefarious" deeds of self-defense that the Democrats fought every step of the way.

I like to believe that the Democratic candidates mean well, but no one would be happier if the Democrats came to power than the extremists, Al Qaeda, Al Sadr, et al.

No thanks. Even now, Democrats can still offer no cogent solutions. All they bleat is: "not whatever Bush is doing, we hate Bush". We need more than that for leadership.

Senator O'Moron strikes again.

He's a lightweight trying to box in the heavyweight division.

My concern is not so much that Obama can spell something correctly. It is whether he and his staff pay attention to detail. Which he and his staff seem unable to do. This has been a constant problem with him. Just one example - He and his staff missed the fact that there was already a Medical Reserve Corps in place when he announced that he was introducing legislature to establish one.

He talks very well, but give me any concrete evidence of what he has actually accomplished in the two years that he has been in the Senate. Only thing that I can think of that he has accomplished is to give aid and comfort to the Terrorists, and stabing our troops in the back. He does show up at various special events, but anyone can do that, and it is not accomplishing anything except the waste of photographic time. His record does not indicate to me that he deserves to be elected to any public office.

He does show up at various special events, but anyone can do that,

Maybe you should talk to McCains home state. They are in an uproar over his missed votes on immigration and his work on the current immigration bill.
I also find your handle funny....darkwater...kind of like gods own army..Blackwater.

All you non serving wannabe war quarterbacks(i use sports words because most americans are to stupid to relate to anything outside of sports) listen up!!

i am in the USMC and all we here are how everybody on the right is for the troops and the left is against.

The american public is so far removed from this war it is pathetic.

We need a draft and we need it now. Also mandatory war bonds must be bought by all american citizens to support this mess.

The stock market reflects the lack of compassion for the fighting men and women of this country.

Defense stocks are rising and the people are fine with this. of course nobody wants a pullout it would destroy business as usual.

as for your petty game on who misspelled what. i am glad you couch potatoes have nothing better to complain about except which canidate makes spelling errors.

is your son or daughter serving? chances are they are not. you want the volunteer service to continue to keep your weak gened children from having to actually serve the country.

serving the country now consisit of a yellow sticker on the back of your soccer wagon (SUV) wow what sacrifice you make from your oversized barns. (yuppy house)

please keep your simpl minded selfish attitude away from the troops. we do not need any more false care.

To those who are still saying that flak jacket is the only correct spelling: tell it to the military...

John McCain wants to start a spelling bee war with Barack Obama? This could be the start of something beautiful.

Instead of using guns and bullets, people with differences could face down in a spelling bee.

Which brings to mind, there is so much hatred expressed in the SWAMP. Perhaps the SWAMP should take its act to Baghdad. Perhaps then the Sunnis, Shite and Kurds would "write out" their differences instead of "shooting out" their differences.

P.S. Even though I served, I'm pretty sure I would have mispelled "flak jacket" and I KNOW I never would have gotten "straitjacket" right in a spelling bee.

"To those who are still saying that flak jacket is the only correct spelling: tell it to the military...

If the military is spelling it as "flack", they are making a spelling error. As I posted before, the term comes from the shortened form of the word, "fliegerabwehrkanone" (FLiegerAbwehrKanone). There is no "C" in that word.

Just like they are spelling the acronym HMMWV wrong...

Is this "flack" is acceptable argument like the other Obama snafu:

"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed."

Twelve or 10,000, same deal, right? Remember the Obamessiah can do no wrong. The frat boy who would be president does this kind of stuff all the time.

I am not talking about McCain's record. Just as I would not vote for Obama, neither will I vote for McCain. I really do not care what McCain's Constituents think about his record. I am concerned with Obama's record since he represents Illinois.

If you want to blast what I write go right ahead, but to attack because you do not like someone's nickname is plain childish and ignorant. (hint: I am of Scottish Ancestry)

Liz,
Your post didn't single out terrorists, but indicted all the Iraqi people. Reread your post . Perhaps it was unintentional on your part, perhaps not.
Certainly, there are terrorists that seek to do our nation harm, but totally believing the overwrought, overplayed, and xenphobic narrative that "they hate us for our freedoms", "they want us dead" and "they'll follow us here" is naive as well.
Naivete is believing the current administration wouldn't use these slogans to serve their goal of getting the public behind their war of choice.

Jeff

Yipe, another case of not knowing the details! Heaven Forbid that we even dare to be critical of his royalness Obama the First. NOT

Talk about attention to detail, W invaded the wrong country.

Senator O'Moron strikes again.

He's a lightweight trying to box in the heavyweight division.

Get in the ring knuckledragger!!!

Alas, a kindred spirit. Join me fellow Highlanders, Bruce and Darkwater, let us all sing along:

Scotland the Brave

Hark when the night is falling, Hear! hear the pipes are calling,
Loudly and proudly calling, Down thro' the glen.
There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping,
High as the spirits of the old Highland men.

Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame,
High may your proud standards gloriously wave,
Land of my high endeavor,
Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever,
Scotland the brave.

High in the misty Highlands,
Out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat Beneath Scottish skies.
Wild are the winds to meet you,
Staunch are the friends that greet you,
Kind as the love that shines from fair maiden's eyes.

Towering in gallant fame etc.

Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish faces,
Yearning to feel the Kiss Of sweet Scottish rain.
Where tropic skies are beaming, Love sets the heart a-dreaming,
Longing and dreaming for the homeland again.

Towering in gallant fame etc.

I simply can't believe that this "flak" vs. "flack" debate is even an issue.

"It's a darn poor mind that can think of only one way to spell a word." Andrew Jackson

It's obvious that we need another 9/11 to convince these bleeding heart liberals that this is a war that will not go away with a Barak Obama surrender. How sad they can't see what is right in front of their faces. Can anyone say 1939? Wake up! Your hatred for George Bush has impeded your logic and strategy for victory and superiority over these villainous sand fleas.

this is coming from the same man that voiced how safe Baghdad had become by going out with a "flak" jacket, a plethora of armored humvees and snipers to protect him.

ahhh, now if he only started to correct the way the president spoke...

Wow, no wonder politics is so screwed up. How many of these post have come up with a new idea. If you aren't attacking or name calling the person who doesn't agree with you then you would have nothing to say. I thought politics was about different parties having different ideas on how to work through problems. This debate on spelling clearly shows that no one wants to deal with the problem. The problem is this "How do we get out of Iraq and not plunge Iraq into a worse scenario then it already is in". I have not heard of any Democrat ideas other then put conditions on Iraq through the budget. The Republicans want more troops to help police the worst areas. Well of those two options neither will work! Instead of name calling and standing behind policies not working lets use all this energy to come up with a solution that WILL work! As for the person from the USMC, I solute you and your commitment. My father recieved a purple heart in Vietnam and my family has a deep respect for all who serve. I ask you and all other Americans lets stop this political debate and find solutions that are practical. Spelling debates in politics won't solve the war.

Hey Reamer!

Nice one. Makes me want to put on a kilt.

I'm sooo disappointed. All these posts, and no one's suggested a vast mis-speller conspiracy involving Dan Quayle and 'potatoe' back in 1992. How soon we forget....

On the good news front, Media Matters isn't getting as many comments as Mark Silva on this - must be the photos:

Media flacks for McCain's false "flak" attack on Obama's spelling

So when Obama says something that sounds good, he's a statesman, and when he says something stupid, it's some functionary in his camp? Convenient.

All you Obama fans are faithful people. You like him because he did well in school, and he's good at reciting what his speech writers tell him to say. You take it on faith, with no rational basis, that he will somehow become a leader and will be equipped to manage the government. You ignore the fact that he has never managed anything and never really lead anyone. Even he can't decide what he stands for, so he stands for whatever he thinks is going to get him elected.

Maybe he should actually accomplish something before he becomes the President, ya think?

That's right, you don't need to think. You are the faithful followers who live on hope and platitudes.

Remember, things aren't turning around in Iraq and it's a quagmire... unless of course someone reports what's actuall happening, like the relative peace that's come to Al Anbar province as an influential tribe turned against Al Qaeda. More proof that the political solution and democracy in Iraq are possible.

C.Morris,

Your "Propane" parody song was awesome!

Seems like just a few years ago the demorats made a big deal out of the spelling of potato.

WOW. WHO HONESTLY CARES. COME ON. IS IT THAT SERIOUS? LOL

Hey,
Tom had a really great point, when Dan Quayle incorrectly spelled a word people jumped all over him. And of course when President Ford stumbled due to a bad knee, juvenile pundits made jokes about him relentlessly, so who cares if McCain makes some backhanded comment to zing Obama? Is it really that big a deal? I think they both have some thicker skin than that!

Jeff-

Meanwhile, the rate of sectarian violence in Baghdad goes back up.

Take off those John McCain brand rose colored glasses, Jeff.
