Sen. Barack Obama is busy running for president, but he is still trying to pay attention to what is happening in his home state.

With Chicago grieving the shooting death of Blair Holt, 16, a Julian High School student killed Friday as he was riding a CTA bus home from school, Obama recently reached out to the boy's mother. His Senate office issued the following statement:

"Michelle and I grieve today for Blair Holt, the family and friends who loved him, and the entire Julian community he left behind. It is both stunning and heartbreaking that we have lost twenty Chicago Public School students to acts of violence just this year. And it is beyond tragic that the alleged gunman, a gang member, was reportedly given the automatic weapon he used to kill Blair by a fifteen-year-old boy.

"When children are arming children to kill children, we must step back and take stock of what kind of society we're living in and what kind of country we want to be. When I spoke with Blair's mother, Annette, she told me that she was committed to making sure that something powerful would come of this tragedy. And I told her that I will work with her in any way I can to help stop the killings and save our children.

"One way to do this is to redouble our efforts to get assault weapons off our streets and close the gun show loophole that facilitates sales to gangs and drug dealers. But we should also remember that in the end, no government can fill the hole in the hearts of children who kill other children, which is why the most important thing we can do as parents and as a community is to love our children and teach them to love one another."

Wayne LaPierre also called and explained if young Blair would have been packing heat,he could have protected himself.

Even though gun nut LaPierre was born in 1948,you won't find any service in Nam.No,young Wayne was busy hiding with Cheney,Bush,Krystol and all the other Repugnant Chickehhawks.

Um, Earth to Obama: While this is a tragedy, there is a MAJOR difference between a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun and automatic assualt weapons.

Jeff C., why would a little thing like the facts get in the way of Obama's political rant? After all, he cares so, so much.

Besides, isn't it illegal to bring a handgun into the city of Chicago? Boy, I'm sure glad that law's really working. I'm REALLY glad it's not just insuring that only the gang members and criminals are the only ones that have hanguns. Oh, wait...

Bill, what kind of "journalist" agree's with Rush on this?
I'll tell you what kind, a guy whose such an unpopular "journalist" in his own right that he doesn't even have his own blog-site so he spends all day long posting on Mark and Frank's Swamp blog-site.

Jeff,
Great idea!!, let school children carry guns to school. "Here's your lunch Timmy, oh and don't forget your .45. I've loaded it with hollow points, your favorite!" (smiles and pats child on head as husband puts his arm around the waist his gorgeous wife) Jeff/Bill for President! Jeff/Bill for President!

Hey Chicago Tribune, are all reporters on the Barack Obama payroll? Is this newspaper even capable anymore of objective journalism?

Oooohhh, Obama issues a press statement in regard to the tragic shooting of a high school student! What's next, Obama issues a press release over the tragic slaying of a little dog by a coyote?

And before you Loons jump on me I am not equating the loss of this fine young man to that of a dog. My point is that this is just more PR work by the Chicago Tribune for the Obama people.

My point is that this is just more PR work by the Chicago Tribune for the Obama people.

Posted by: John D | May 16, 2007 1:22:10 PM

I don't think this is going to be the PR they want, especially now that he's made a political statement out of false information. If Obama's PR people would have read the Trib before they wrote their statement, they could have skipped the whole "assault weapons off the street" angle, seeing as how the suspect wasn't even carrying an automatic weapon, as the press release indicates.

Look! Jethro's found new ways to put words in other people's mouth. Still waiting for the explanation about how that semiautomatic handgun (not an automatic weapon like Obama says) got into gun-free Chicago. Or the hundreds of other handguns used in gun crimes here everyday. This ban is going about as well as the foie gras one.

The child also invited a new word: "blog-o-site." And THIS guy questions Bush's usage?

The loons are definitely out in full today.

The parents of these hoodlums should be held responsible and serve some time in prison.

Where is mom when her 16 year old can't read but can hang around looking for trouble?

Looks to me like John E didn't take his meds again this morning. Didn't mummy and duddy tell you to take them every morning, John E.?

What exactly is the point of your post and who exactly are you referring to? Jeff, Bill, me??

Say good night, Johnny E!

Jeff/Bill,
The gun was obviously smuggled and for you to blame anyone other than the perp is ghoulish.

Yes, jethro, the parents of these kids who murder people, they are not at fault, no, not at all!

Good night, Jethro.

Jethro wrote (above):

"Jeff/Bill
The gun was obviously smuggled and for you to blame anyone other than the perp is ghoulish."

You got somethin' there Jethro. The kid who furnished the weapon and the kid who pulled the trigger, combined, violated more than a dozen Federal, Illinois and Chicago laws and ordinances regarding firearm possession, transfer and usage, not to mention the criminal laws against ADW and murder. So why does Barak Obama think the answer is more anti-gun laws? If the existence of all these laws didn't stop the tragedy, why will more laws lead to a different result?

The answer is that there will be no difference. Passing laws seems to be the way politicians make themselves look like they are doing something, while doing nothing at all. That way they get to wash their hands - Pilate like - of the ills of society.

Gang culture is a culture of violence, where shootings and murder are rites of passage. Under these circumstances, you will never have law and order unless you hold people personally responsible for their own criminal behavior, as well as for the violence caused by the gangs with which they are affiliated. It is no longer enough to make crime not pay. Crime must now hurt the criminal to be an effective deterrent.

But more laws aren't the answer. What needs to happen is enforcement of the laws already on the books. Laws are not laws unless they are enforced. The answer lies in spending more time, money and effort hiring police and training them to properly root out gang violence and bring the bad guys in.

This is an example of why Barak Obama shouldn't be a Senator, much less a President. He doesn't have the character and independent thought necessary. In a time of crisis, he turned out to be an ideologue, following the anti-gun party line: punish the guns, not the people. If you look closely enough at him, you might even see the wires with moveon.org hovering above.

John D & Ilk,

I have seen the light.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

When flame throwers & howitzers are outlawed, only outlaws will have flame throwers & howitzers.

Using your goofy, convoluted logic, you don't have a problem with Iran having nukes, right?

Little Johnny Droolsalot, are you still calling yourself a "journalist"?

What happened to your HVAC business?

I was talking to the other self-titled Swamp Wingnut "journalist", not you.

John Chimp E,

The question remains, as always --

WHAT IS YOUR POINT?!

Yet again, you think you found a "gotcha" but you haven't.

What exactly is it that you think that Jeff is "agreeing with"?

Also, it's pretty obvious to anybody with a brain that Jeff is in fact a journalist, whether you like that or not. It's clear from his writing style, the way he organizes his thoughts, has a ready command of the facts etc.

Chimp E,

Now I'll save you the trouble and reproduce your 2 favorite posts of mine, the ones you you love to copy and paste on nearly a daily basis --

"As far as Obama goes, I like him and will probably vote for him if he makes it."

[I'still like him. It's looking less likely that I'l vote for him tho.]

and...

"Even you can figure that out."

[That, of course was in reference to you repeatedly using a variety of anti Latino ethinic slurs in the Swamp.]

Jethro, then what's the point of such a ban if it can be defeated so easily by criminal smugglers? This is one of MANY high profile gun crimes in Chicago. Who, exactly, is the ban serving? And how is asking that question placing blame? Criminals are ALWAYS responsible for the crimes they commit and it would be nice if they were always punished, but pointing out the obvious truth, that this ban didn't stop gun violence in this and many other situations, is not diverting blame from the transgressors. It's recognizing the facts.

Would you want to live in a bad neighborhood and take public transportation every day with people you KNOW are gang members and who you KNOW are packing illegal handguns that they "smuggled" into the city? With absolutely no way to protect yourself from them and their weapons other than a police force you KNOW is unresponsive in your community? I wouldn't. I wouldn't want my family in that situation. That's all. And moving just isn't an option for most people in these neighborhoods.

Sadly, most politicians simply ignore the violence and, as you just did, chalk it up to "the gun never should've been there in the first place, it was smuggled, isolated incident." Well, bad news guys it WAS there and it happens all the time in this city. Obama has shown his ignorance of the subject by demonstrating that he doesn't know the difference between an automatic and semi-automatic weapon which is a sadly typical uneducated response from an Illinois politician on gun issues.

p.s. Chimpy, it's not what you or I write or say that makes me a journalist, it's my bylines and the company that pays me for them ;)

Awwwww, poor little Johnny E can no longer find where I work!!! He went to my former employer's website and saw my contact info is no longer there. What a shame.

You see, Johnny E., I'll clue you into a fairly normal practice for those of us in the employed world: I am capable enough to be able to switch jobs, get better paying jobs, jobs with better titles. It's called talent, work, ability.

But I know living in mummy and duddy's basement and having no better job prospects than to go from janitorial job to janitorial job is the best you can ever aspire!

Jeff,
Come back to reality. Yes murder by gun happens in the city. It does NOT happen all the time. You are falling for the fear factor news cycles. Violent crime has been decreasing over the years, I believe bruce or John D posted DOJ data to support the Bush Administrations accomplishments in this area. I live in a bad neighborhood and I go about my business everyday knowing that there are many numbers of things that could happen to me that could cut my life short. I'm more afraid of getting hit by a car or bus while riding my bike to the train station than I've ever been walking down any street in the city. I ride everyday because it makes me feel more alive than I ever could if I let fear control me. You are more likely to lock your keys in your car than get shot while walking around Chicago.

PS If you KNOW someone is carrying a gun and is in a gang, why are you not notifying the proper authorities? Would you let al-Qaeda roam around like this?

Also if you want to carry a gun go to the Police Academy. Not only will you get to carry a gun, but also you will get a shiny badge, great benefits, and you can run red lights. If you don't want to do that Jeff/Bill just get out there and stop letting thugs kill you slowly, you didn't let the terorists do it.

John D,
What do you have against janitors and since when did your job define who you are? I can tell you're a jerk, not because you are an HVAC specialist, but because of the filth you spew each day and the way you talk down to women.

P.S. Also, if it was someone in my family who was the victim I absolutely would NOT accept "it was smuggled in" as an excuse for why a criminal was illegally armed. Those who allowed it to happen should suffer consequences for allowing a gang member to obtain a gun.

Janitor Joe or that really John E? If you're a janitor, great for you! As far as someone's job defining who they are, well that is a practice done quite often here by elements of the Loony Left.

Awwwww, poor little Johnny E can no longer find where I work!!! He went to my former employer's website and saw my contact info is no longer there. What a shame.

John D,

Am I understanding you correctly? Coach Chimp E McBubblehead is trying to track you down?! That's REALLY creepy! Especially since this is the guy who likes to "joke" about shooting you and other people.

A word of warning to all: Never use anything even close to your real name on a blog. There's a world full crazies.

Leo-

You're right about the crazies on the internet.

I'm sure Johnny D probably changed jobs to stay one step ahead of the Secret Service investigation into his repeated death threats against the Democratic Leadership.

Leo T., yes, Johnny E has been tracking me down, where I live, where I work, etc. In fact, he posted under my full name in a Swamp today, one in which "I" take a swipe at you.

Jethro, have you ever been to the far West Side or the deep South Side? Have you any idea how unresponsive the police presence is in some of these communities? Do you actually think calling or going to the local precinct and telling them gang members with guns are in your neighborhood will make them do anything about it? Even if the area has had gangs working out of it for generations? Someone's living in fantasyland for sure, and it's not me.

It's true that violent crime is down nationally on the whole, but locally there's no correlation that the gun ban has anything to do with it and violent crime in our city's schools is way, way up.

Just for you, Jethro, here's a list of "banned" handgun crimes that have happened in the city and I pray that you open your eyes and ears up to what's happening around you, because up to now you've CLEARLY not been paying attention:

Schools Chief Arne Duncan called the deaths "horrifying." If 20 students were shot and killed in Winnetka or Barrington, the outcry would be deafening and residents and politicians would mobilize for gun control, he contended.

"But somehow, because these are inner-city kids from Chicago, people see their lives as less valuable or more expendable," Duncan said. "Overwhelmingly, these were children doing the right thing, trying to get an education."

A Hyde Park High School student was killed last Monday in a shooting. Blair Holt, the 16-year-old Hero who this post is about, got caught in a gang shooting on a CTA bus and sacrificed his own life to protect a friend. He was the definition of an innocent victim!

Jethro, I do not mean to put words in your mouth or pretend that you condone any of this. But your assertion that "You are more likely to lock your keys in your car than get shot while walking around Chicago," has got to be clearly questioned by the litany of killings I've just rattled off in the last month, especially if you're walking to a Chicago public school where one student was shot and killed every ten days last year.

Surely, you have to at the very least concede that the gun ban isn't working in the cases of the school shootings. And don't you think it's a little laughable to suggest that people just tell the cops that gang activity is going on in neighborhoods like Calumet? If the cops don't already know that they're ignoring the reality that's going as much as I think you are, Jethro.

I guess I just find this amount of gun violence in less than a month unacceptable.

Remember, it’s Jethro’s assertion that one student dead every ten days from a gun crime is not “all the time.”

Actually, Tony, I am friends with a Secret Service agent. It may be prudent for me to make him aware of you and your buddy John E though!
