While the White House and Democratic congressional leaders try to reach a compromise on supplemental Iraq War funding, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has shown no signs of slowing her attacks on President Bush.
Appearing in Chicago Friday at Rep. Jan Schakowsky's "Ultimate Women's Power Lunch," a fundraiser hosted by the North Shore Democratic congresswoman at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, Pelosi called the war “the biggest ethical issue facing our country.”
Pelosi questioned whether it was ethical to send troops into war “under a false pretense without a strategy for success,” without proper equipment and training and without “demanding accountability from the Iraqi government while we dishonored our commitment to our veterans here at home.”
“In the elections, when the American people were calling for a new direction, the one place where they called for it in the clearest possible way was in the war in Iraq,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) told an audience estimated at about 2,000 people. “They wanted the war to wind down,” Pelosi said. “Instead, the president has escalated it. He has a tin ear in terms of listening to the people and a blind eye as to what is going on in Iraq.”
Earlier, Pelosi defended Democrats from GOP criticism that their now-vetoed Iraq supplemental contained a U.S. troop withdrawal timetable that amounted to a script for insurgents or Al Qaeda to take over the country, creating new opportunities for terrorism.
“We’ll fight terrorism,” she said. “There is absolutely no question about the Democrats commitment to fighting terrorism.”
Of warnings from the White House and Republicans that Al Qaeda is actively working in Iraq and threatening the country’s stability, Pelosi said that Al Qaeda wasn’t present before the U.S. invasion. She said Al Qaeda represents “a small percentage of the insurgents and militias and those who are fighting there.”
“The Iraqis will take care of Al Qaeda and we will fight terrorism wherever it exists,” Pelosi said. “But that doesn’t mean we have to have our troops dying in a civil war that is not making our country safer.”
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who attended the event, said the president’s veto of the spending bill means the process is “back to the drawing board and there are three drawing boards”-the House, the Senate and separate negotiations between the White House and congressional leadership.
Durbin said that while “profound disagreements” exist, he believes there is “a constructive and positive attitude” toward trying to reach a compromise by the end of the month. But Durbin also noted that congressional efforts to “deauthorize” the war, such as those discussed by presidential contender and U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) would be fruitless.
“I’m not sure deauthorizing the war would end it,” Durbin said. “This president as commander in chief is likely to continue this war even if Congress sends him a deauthorizing bill. I can’t imagine he would ever sign it.”

What a hoot and irony. Pelosi says Bush has a tin ear while all the democrats, and especially Pelosi and Harry "We Surrender to the terrorists" Reid have chicken' livers.

1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization, and subjecting our military personnel to unnecessary harm, debilitating injuries, and deaths.
2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
3. Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.
4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.
5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.
6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.
7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.
9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.

IRAQ.....????????????"

It didn't. It passed an authorization to use force.
The Spanish-American War began with a Congressional authorization to use
force, followed shortly by a formal Declaration of War. They are not the
same thing, no matter what Joe Biden says about it.
Any thinking person knows that a Congressional authorization to use force
should only cover a very short term, emergency use of force. A few weeks
at
most.
When it drags on into months, at that point both common sense and the
Constitution require that either a formal Declaration of War be made by
Congress, or the military action be terminated.
The First Gulf War lasted half a year and was a violation of this
principle.
The Balkans action was also a violation, but at least that was over in
four
months, with no American combat deaths.
JFK, LBJ and Nixon in Vietnam were egregious examples.
If Bush were to be impeached and convicted over this fiasco (and it
couldn't
happen to a nicer guy), future Presidents would act in a more sober and
restrained manner. And the Founding Fathers would approve of that.
please mr secretary general of the united nations,

Nancy is right. Bush does have a tin ear to the American people. Bush thinks he can hide behind the "protecting the troops" theme, but he in fact started a war without adequate plans or preparation for the impacts to America or the troops. Bush is the elephant in America's living room. Bush's war is a failure and America has paid enough to cover for his failure. The American people are just waiting for the democratic system to correct Bush's failure.

How long is this nonsense going on. All of the
young adults that are dieing are really still
babies. They think it is an honor to go to war.
This is a conflict that will never be won. We
always have to stick our nose into everything and
now all the countries hate us.
Bush will go down in history as one of the worst
presidents & instead of bringing our kids home and apologizing to the American people he will keep being stubborn and risk more lives.
Posted by: Marge Ferretto | May 5, 2007 11:33 AM
And couldn't Bush have just attached a signing statement stating would ignore those parts he didn't agree with? He has often done it before. If they were legal this would have been legal. If this one is not legal then neither are all the others. Was the temptation for political posturing to great to issue the statement and get his money, knowing there would be many opportunities to change things, there always is.

Better a tin ear than an empty head. Pelosi and her ilk are fools. Will the dems bring everyone home immediately in January '09 if they win? Not hardly. Why? Because for all the bluster, they know we can't just walk away and leave a vacuum ready made for those who would murder anyone whose religion differs from theirs.

Pelosi summed up the Iraq situation accurately where you noted: "Pelosi questioned whether it was ethical to send troops into war under a false pretense without a strategy for success, without proper equipment and training, and without demanding accountability from the Iraqi government." Bush has demonstrated the acumen of a school bully and provided a hotbed for terrorists, without regard for wasting billions of dollars. Also he is responsible for doing away
with the man who maintained stability in Iraq the only way possible.

I blame everyone who voted in favor of going into Iraq. Bush, Hilary, Cheney, Pelosi and Carey... they're all a bunch of idiots. Their is no single pereson to point towards.
What makes me a Republican is that the GOP doesn't change policies to get votes from the vocal minority or the gay community, they stick to their guns and do what they truly believe is correct. Dems chase votes for power more now than ever before... I think JFK and FDR would roll over in their graves if they saw what became of their party.

Deauthorize? Misunderestimated?
This failed president has given rise to a whole new vocabulary.
Extraordinary renditions is just kidnap. Advanced interrogation techniques is just torture.
Verbalizing new utterances cannot mask what Bush is. He is a liar. Gonzales is a liar. An attorney general who clearly stated he had nothing do do with attorney removals...he's just a common liar.
And here is the troubling thing; he is presently hiding behind a sensationalist agenda in pursuing the internet predator "generation", (if you truly believe their "50,000 of 'em on-line every moment" mularky). There are so few predators out there...and lets be sensible about this, that police departments across the nation are using beauty pageant girls to do their bidding, wasting BILLIONS of dollars in your tax dollar resources contacting these guys, pretending to be 13 year old bait, grooming them for weeks, months, and in some cases years, and then trot out this as an example that is representative of their true progress. And Gonzales loves these stories, because it fills a spot on the evening news...that is not filled by HIM.
In actuality, it's far easier for him to be at a photo-op of a group of "saved by the feds" school children and their moms, than showing his useless as* up at ANY hearing where he has to answer any question truthfully.

Think about it:
If someone invades this country, I would fight to the end to destroy the aggressors.
That is what some Iraqi's are doing. As much as I hate to see our US servicemen getting killed, which are the lucky ones, and thousands of others getting mamed for life, I don't blame anyone for defending their country.
The people of Iraq were probably better off under the rule of Saddam. He would not let the people fight amongst themselves as are they are today.
The Iraq Parliment is in this mode now. No one can agree to the future with their own beliefs on their own religions.
We need the Iraq Parliment to get off their duffs and set some kind of agenda for our military to exit Iraq.

Terrorism takes many forms. The President talks about terrorists in Iraq and that country’s stability while here in the U.S., the media, our scientists, and many members of congress and the senate have been ‘terrorized’ into silence, submission and compromise.
The people of the United States have voted -- that is our voice. If we are so certain that we want to show the rest of the world that democracy is the best route, then compromise is not an option at this point. When the person in the President’s position does not listen to the majority vote of the people then we are no longer operating in a democracy.

President Bush is living proof that we need an Amendment to the Constitution which will not allow recovering alcoholics to run for office. The damage he has sustained to his brain is obvious, since he cannot speak in complete sentences. Alcoholics Anonymous should use him as a Poster Child to teach kids about the dangers of alcoholism.

Oddly enough, they, the enemy, think you whiny weenie liberals with your beliefs in nothing represent thought here in the USA. So when they have knocked off all those of us who are traditional American in thought, they will come for you and you will whine again as they kill you, wondering where your defender Geoge W. the dems have always wanted to cut and run this is not a secert. but the american people are blind to the danger that "WILL COME" to this country if the insurgents get a strong hold in iraq the twin towers will be only a drop in the pond so to speak to what i feel will happen, then you will hear the american people scream "you should have done more overseas to have stopped this before it ever happened." People wake up this is not the era of "Leave it to Beaver", you have racials that want nothing more in this life than to see Americans dead and dismembered on their tv's. the dems and 46% of americans are in a fanasty world where the little butterflys come to them and make them think life is a bed of rose that have no thorns.........WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE...this are times when people will kill you for your brief in any other god than theirs.
give the troops what the need to outright win this then come home...STAY THE COURSE!

To all you extremists (yes democrats)
You say your speaking for the American public......Where is the proof? I for one would love to see a Special Federal Voring system. When matters such as the war at at the leve it is today and everyone is pointing fingers saying this and that and everyone is an idiot or stupid or a liar..we can have a vote by ALL US CITIZENS including ALL OF OUR MILITARY and let US THE AMERICANS decide...do we stay or do we pull out.
That would SHUT EVERYONE up as We The People would have the FINAL SAY SO!
My Son is on his 2nd tour and says the media here is full of BS and guess what he is a registered Democrat but believes we are doing the right thing it it would be disasterious for us to pull out.
But see theres my opinion and his...hense all the bikering.
Lets Vote and thats that!
One thing that should change in this country...let the people ACTUALLY decide!
Thats my point!

"The GOP doesn't change it's policies"??? You are full of it Tom.
Since when did the Republicans support BIG government? That is what they have given us, the biggest in US history. Since when has Republicans been for fiscal irresponcibility? They spend like drunken sailors, no Democrat governement has ever spent like this before.
But the oil companies have never had such profits before in their history, so in that respect, the corporate welfare still goes on, and I guess that is the aspect of the party you love so much.
How about some proper national security? Lock down the ports? No. Defend the border? No. Secure chemical/nuclear plants? No. All of that was promised by Kerry, but was rejected in the last election. Go figure.

American's stand up for your rights, we do not live in a dictatorship. George Bush created a
war based on lies and deceit. It is now time for the people to take back their government and the sooner the better.
This used to be a country of great manufacturing pride, where the great majority of our product was manufactured by americans. The workers shared in this manufacturing of product by receiving a living wage. Remember when our kids grew up with a parent at home to take care of them, because Dad made enough money to take care of the families needs.
We need to send more of the crooked politicians to jail until they learn that being a crook is not limited to a those who steal out of poverty or ignorance.

I am ashamed of the posturing of both sides. The war is a joke, and the leader of the United States is the world's foremost court jester,but... We have soldiers fighting for what they think is a good cause, standing behind the buffon, for whom most Americans voted.
If you want the soldiers to come home, then own your mistake and do not put a bufoon abd a bully in office again. Vote intelligently. It is not replican or democrat it is issue. Do not vote because your husband or wife thinks you should put an extremist in office.
Remember if we have a court jseter for president it is because somebody voted for him. It is your priviledge and duty to correct that mistake, now. Do your homework and vote for the best man or woman, not party! Just make sure it is not another Bush!
Remember Nostradamus predicted the town imbecile would become the leader of the greatest nation on earth in 2000, so who do YOU think that is?
Posted by: Deborah | May 5, 2007 12:06 PM
this is ridiculous. the US won the war when Saddam Hussein was ousted from power. We are now an occupying force in the midst of a civil war, and we're there to build a permanent infrastructure to control Iraq's oil. Both Democrats and Republicans continue to call this sham a war when it's not.
When Germany defeated France in World War 2, the war with France ended and the resistance began. The insurgents are Iraq's version of the French Resistance in WW2. The fact that we are there to control their resources is well-known to all. And it doesn't help that our attitude towards them on the ground are as prejudiced as they are. 80% of Iraqis want us gone, and 55% of them see nothing wrong in killing Americans to get us out of there (from a poll taken by British military intelligence).
When we stop calling this a war and start admitting to ourselves that it is an agressive and prejudiced OCCUPATION of a FOREIGN COUNTRY and nothing more, this ridiculous war rhetoric that both the democrats and republicans are on will stop.
Finally STOP CALLING THIS the WAR on Terror! That is about as meaningless as the WAR ON DRUGS! Attacks by terrorists are thwarted by intelligence and police action, NOT a military focused on attacking and occupying whole countries! Do you really think that Al Qaeda is going to INVADE the US?

To the idiots who believe the terrorist will come here if we withdrawal. You people are a bunch of freaking morons, how are they going to follow us here? If the Bush administration started focusing on our homeland security they would not be able to get here would they. We would be able to detect radiation in shipping containers, we would be able to stop potential from entering illegally and legally, we would still have the 100K police on the streets that Bush took off the streets. We would have over 200 billion a year to help fund the protection of our homes rather than giving it to Haliburton and their sister corporations in their no bid contracts. I suppose the terrorist will jump in the oceans and just swim here. But you idiots keep on feeding on the Bush administrations BS and keep on supporting the deaths of our soldiers. Their blood is on your hands.

Everyone in America isn't BLIND whether they have had strokes or not. With the majority of the American population totally against this occupation, Congress needs to use effective force to stop the occupation completely, including impeachment.
The evidence is clear, actions and words show he is running this country as if he were King.
People that are not even in the military are asking, "why don't they just remove him, as he driving this country into the ground" ? In my neck of the woods he is known as the destroyer. I wouldn't be surprised to see a major Out Cry by the majority of the population relative to removal.
I agree the time has come for total removal of these illegal gangsters.
Inside the Military represents Katrinia for all concerned.
Bush doesn't support the troops at all. He sends them on extended deployments, no equipment, not enough training, no dwell down time, no quality medical care, not enough speciality doctors, not enough Brain Injury Top_Notch Care, (although outside Military forces offered to help), No follow up and follow through relative to medical care, Research of IED explosives, Preventative IED Equipment, retired military are favored for products verses products that actually work and now sending wounded troops on deployments. The lists are growing by the day of the abuse.
Criminals are seated in full force by this administration.
The troops are being abused more and more by this administration day in and day out.
Past administrations such as Clinton, the republicans cut_off the funds for wars. The Democrats need to cut all funds to stop soldiers from being killed in this reckless war.
Where is the accountability? There is none! There hasn't been any for 5 years.

We all seem a little uninformed, the current president of IRAN has informed the Islamic war is being waged aganist the whole WORLD. He also told the world that Iran will have a nuke and if we attack Iran's bomb factories, he has trained 10,000 suicide bombers to spead around the earth.
The world needs to know that the Muslim population is over three hundred million and some estimate that over 100,000,000 maybe raticals ready to murder all of us and our children. They believe that the left wing nut world view that all problems are America's fault.
In fact if you read or listen to the Democrates, you will clearly find America's blame game cards being played for purely political reasons. The Democrates voted to give the president the right to take military action, read their speaches after 9/11. Oh how nice to point fingers and call others liars when they spoke the same words in their forgotten speaches.
If we flee as Congress wants, there will be $ 7.00 a gallon gas and rationing, because the Iraq war will spead to a regional war. The Sunni vs Sheia will pit one oil producer aganist another.
This war will bring on a global economic depression and million of deaths from war and starvation.
POLITICS can not lead a effort to win stability on a global basis. Look at the UN and tell me what or where their efforts have resulted in any stability or improvement in lives of the oppressed.

The Tom's and Joes of this world amaze me. Doesnt matter what actual facts are presented, they parrot the lies of their incompetent masters (Bush et al) and basically use short "your mother wears army boots" rebuttals for everything.
Hysterical for the woman, DEMS dont support troops, "personal attacks on Poor George Bush (Mr. Nice, and even though he has totally disrespected constitution, "we must think of the Office! The President *taa daa!* " yeah, right...). And where do they get that DEMS will surrender to "the terrorists,".? They never can deal with the fact that this is not many foreign terrorists but more a civil war we have unleashed.
Oh, and how about "I am GOP because they stick to their guns (no matter what) ." You got that right. Even in the face of reality, they keep on the path of failure (and greed, and violence),of course to be God-like.....
Being GOP means never having to say you are sorry, or deal with facts. I hold those who elected BushCo responsible for the utter failure of Bush and where our country is headed.
I guess my mom wears army boots now too. At least she aint in Iraq. Any time the GOP boys want to talk facts and numbers and real world geopolitic and history, well, then we might get somewhere.....
I rarely post to these things.... Cant get through to these guys anyway, they dont get it, dont listen, are in a "fact-free zone" as much as possible.... This is for my fellow anti-GOP'ers. :->
Hopefully we will get our country back and on the Constitution again soon.....

" the US won the war when Saddam Hussein was ousted from power."
Wrong. Iran and al Qaeda won the war when Saddam was ousted from power!
Now Iran has nothing there to keep them in check. Except us, and we are not a good replacement for doing Saddam's dirty work - it makes us look bad. We need another demon to replace Saddam now, I have no doubt one will be found, and it will be just another reason for the world to hate the US all over again. Thanks Bush.

NONE of the posters get it.
They have the anger of a Liberal accusing Bush of stealing elections.
They will never get over it.
Will the posters remember their vitriole when radical islamists (which means most of them) behead their loved ones?
Did 9/11 just mark the United States blowing up the World trade towers (if you believe the idiot Rosie)?
Or was this another killing event of many by radical islam? Will they stop when Pelosi begs them to? More likely they will behead her too.
This war is unlike any other. It is a religious war of beliefs. It is not based in any country but in EVERY country. Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and France, England, Norway, Mexico and The US to name a few.
Some Democrats say Americans have spoken. I say, no, they have not. The democrats were voted in with the hateful propaganda of the Media, not with real issues and examination of American values.
Remember, it was not so many years ago that another propaganda machine, The GERMANS, came to power, started WW2 and killed millions in gas chambers. Oh, I forgot, islamists don't believe this ever happened. Will you forget?
War is not gentle, it's not civilized, and it is never clean. This war is no exception. IF the democrats have a real solution, let them bring it forward, with exactly HOW they will stop radical islam and terrorism. Until then, I consider Pelosi and company traitors to the United States.

Withdraw the Democrats from Congress and Send more troops to Iraq. America has not been attacked since 9/11 because of President Bush's policy and his war against Terrorism. Do any of the Congressional leaders remember the President's Speech about the War in Iraq on September 21, 2001? Read this Madam Speaker:
Americans are asking, "How will we fight and win this war?"
We will direct every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence, and every necessary weapon of war -- to the destruction and to the defeat of the global terror network.
Now, this war will not be like the war against Iraq a decade ago, with a decisive liberation of territory and a swift conclusion. It will not look like the air war above Kosovo two years ago, where no ground troops were used and not a single American was lost in combat.
Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes visible on TV and covert operations secret even in success.
We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place until there is no refuge or no rest.
And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation in every region now has a decision to make: Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists.
YOU SOUND AS IF YOU ARE WITH THEM MADAM SPEAKER!

A reply to Fred, who spouted one of the more ridiculous notions presented in this thread: Fred, if the terrorists are going to fight us here, how will they get here? The Navy of Islam? The Islamic Air Force? No, no...they will use the transporters of the Prophet's heralded Space Force, how stupid of me.
And Tom, if Republicans don't change their positions, why is Mayor Giuliani all of a sudden against gay rights and abortion? If Republicans are supposed to be the party of small government, why are Republican administrations responsible for so many TRILLIONS of national debt?
We are tired of your untrue and ridiculous talking points. They were hatched during the Reagan years by Lee Atwater, spouted incessantly by his minion Roger Ailes on Fox News, as well as the Unholy Trinity of Limbaugh, Hannity and Weiner (Savage) and perfected in the new century by Karl Rove.
Do your homework, guys...when was the last time a Democratic administration supported a secret, illegal war running arms to one side with funds obtained by selling more arms to an enemy? Against the expressed will of Congress? This is what Reagan did in Nicaragua...oh, yeah, HE FORGOT!!! (Spare me, please). In most places, selling arms to an enemy is called TREASON!
When was the last time a Democratic administration started an illegal war on lies spun by sycophantic political hacks? (HINT: "Never")
There are two things that make Republicans so dangerous; first is their philosophy of government. (Thanks, Thom Hartmann; I think you're right on about this) Republicans believe that the only legitimate functions of government are police and armies, and to smooth the way for robber barons to suck up as much of the economy as possible. The second, and even scarier trait is that the R's are so convinced of their moral superiority that they believe they can do anything, commit any crime, cause any mayhem, trash any portion of the Constitution in order to acheive their ends. It has happened time and time again; Nixon gave us Cambodia and Watergate; Reagan/Bush gave us "Arms for Hostages", death squads in Nicaragua, the CIA running drugs, BCCI (in which a DEMOCRATIC FAT CAT WAS BROUGHT DOWN BY A DEMOCRATIC SENATOR, John Kerry; the savings and loan scandals; Bush II gives us stolen elections, 911 (uh, yeah, they were responsible for the security of our country on that day, yes?) Iraq, treason in the form of outing an undercover CIA agent, who, ironically enough was working against Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
This is only a partial list of the CRIMES Republican administrations have perpetrated against our country in my lifetime. Don't bother fussing about it; these are all extremely well documented, if you only take the time to look.
So please, if you think that the country is going to hell in a handcart, please support change. Vote Democratic.

This is unfortunately not the great country I came to many years ago. I cried when Bush invaded Iraq, and I desired not to be part of this horror. Even though it is too late for all who died and for their families, I hope very much that it is not too late to reverse our reputation in the world by doing the right thing some day soon. How can we as the people act upon our rights, when we can't find the tools that were taken away by this administration? Where has our democracy gone?
Posted by: Sivvi | May 5, 2007 1:09 PM
"Wrong. Iran and al Qaeda won the war when Saddam was ousted from power!"
Wrong. the US won that war. handliy. with prejudice. When the military gets involved in an actual war, they kick ass, and they did. Iran and Al Qaeda are trying to fill in the vacuum created from that war when the administration screwed up after the military did what they were asked to do. THEY knew what they were doing. The idiots in Washington didn't.
Rumsfeld once said something like 'Don't talk to me about reconstruction'. HE didn't want to hear it, and we're now paying the price because of his, Cheney, and Bush's absolute stupidity in dealing with a newly defeated country with urgent needs. There was no insurgency -- no Iran, no Al Qaeda in Iraq. Then. And there wouldn't have been if the administration hadn't fired Iraq's military and the rest of the government who knew what they were doing.
So what do we have there now? There are almost as many foreign contractors in Iraq as there are American forces. Iraq is about to be subjected to the loss of control of their oil fields. 80% of the money gotten from Iraq oil fields will go to US companies. Permanent military facilities are being built in Iraq. WHAT does that tell you? We're occupiers the same way that Germany occupied France. Maybe not with as much absolute cruelty as the Germans, but occupiers nonetheless.
This has nothing to do with so-called 'Islamic Fascism' (another GOP manufactured label) and everything to do with power and greed. The military are just pawns in the eyes of the administration. They could care less what happens to our soldiers once they return. They don't WANT to fund the military if it means spending money JUST to protect soldiers unless there is something in it for THEM.
'nuff said.

Who do we blame when we pull out all our toops and then we end up with a war of terrists here in the U.S. I have a grandson who did two tours in Iraq in the 82nd airborne div. he said we are doing the right thing by staying and keeping the terrists away from the U.S. If this happens are the Democrats going to blame themselves for in forcing Prsident Bush to retreat. Oh they will figure some way out to prove it wasn't because their insisance for President Bush to pull out of Iraq.

Democrats are IDIOTS! They are the party of CUT AND RUN and Surrender Dates. The party of Pelosi/Reid/Dachle/Kennedy/Clinton/CNN/NBC/CBS/O'Donnell/Sorros and all other liberal groups. When everything is going well they are with us but when things are tough and not looking good for the USA they immediately start waving the White Flag...... What kind of message are we sending to other countries.. "We'll be there at the beginning as long as things are going well, BUT, if things are not going good, You are on your own, We will Retreat and tell our enemies when we are going to Surrender". I would rather align myself with the Party of Ronald Reagan, Pappa Bush and Son.
Posted by: A | May 5, 2007 1:54 PM
I don't know what the situation on the ground is in Iraq. Arline, I hope your grandson stays out of harms way.
But you have to ask why they would try to invade the US. WHO would invade? Are we putting our kids in harms way in Iraq in order to stop 10 to 20 terrorists from attacking the US in some way? It doesn't take a lot of people to do another 9/11. How can the military fight THAT?
Do you remember when Reagan pointed to Nicaragua and said in so many words that they're not far from Texas? Do you really think that Reagan believed that Nicaragua was going to INVADE Texas?
Not too long ago a group of 20 terrorists from Indonesia 'invaded' Singapore. When they got caught, they were all summarily executed. Did Singapore invade Indonesia? Would it make any sense at all for them to do that? No. To them it was a police action -- anyone caught in Singapore with a gun is subject to an automatic death penalty. No exceptions. They don't have problems with terrorists in Singapore.
I don't see how fighting in Iraq is going to stop terrorists in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan from perpetrating a new 9/11 atrocity in this country.
Finally, when was the last time New Zealand was attacked by terrorists? China? Taiwan? Norway? Iceland? If this is supposed to be the start of global war, why aren't all non-islamic countries targeted? Why the US and not Brazil? Argentina? Chile? Mexico -- after all, Mexico is heavily Christian.
The answer is that there is no global war except in the minds of conspiracy theorists and a hopeful GOP trying to retain power.
Posted by: roger hall | May 5, 2007 2:05 PM
@Dave, were you under the impression that the UN authorized the war in Kosovo? They didn't. So if that is your standard for a "legal" war, then look no further than Clinton for the last Democrat to conduct an "illegal" war.
How will the terrorists get here? The same way they got here on 9/11. Remember, the invasion of Iraq is not the root cause of Islamic terrorism against the United States, it had been going on for a long time. Is returning to the days of 9/11 really the good old days?
Posted by: Michael | May 5, 2007 2:05 PM
Republicans are responsible for the Iraq war. The invasion and occupation of Iraq were and are based on lies, half-truths, distortions and nuance, aided and abetted by not just a compliant, supine mainstream media, but by a complicit corporate media harboring closet sympathizers and, in all likelihood, government-funded agents. The liberal mainstream media are a myth perpetrated by Fox and Limbaugh. No such animal exists. Most likely, deep in the bowels of the neo-con crime machine, the inventor of the forged, Niger yellow-cake document, slithers about flicking its tongue for scent of the next victim. The Iraq war of aggression is an international outrage, though “business as usual”, and its perpetrators must ultimately be held to account. The Nuremberg criminals were hanged.
Many congressional Democrats who voted for this war must have known what the ascendant neo-cons stood for, who they were and what the hoped to achieve. I can’t believe they knew not of the University of Chicago’s Leo Strauss and his regressive, Machiavellian beliefs of civilization and governance. And surely many knew of their Project For A New American Century, with its subtext of endless war and fervor to equate Israel’s well-being with the interests of the U.S.
Every time I hear Democrat politicians like Nancy Pelosi obfuscate about our disastrous, empire’s-last-gasp, Middle East debacle it simply reminds me that we have not attained the “end of history” but only the end of politics that work.
Despite polls showing dismally low ratings for the current anti-democtatic, fascist-tending administration, our nation is split down the middle. But for a clear physical boundary like say, a Mason-Dixon line, civil confrontation would be inevitable. On one side would be the Christo-fascist elements, beating Bibles and condemning Darwin, the “my way or the highway”, “love it or leave it” crowd, and across the line a more accepting, non-militaristic, globally and environmentally aware (though locally engaged) crowd.
The recent L.A. Police Department attacks of civil rights demonstrators may presage conflicts of greater reach, perhaps even involving Federal troops turning on their own citizens. The “clash of civilizations” may ultimately play itself out right here at home.

Shiites?
Sunnies?
Kurds?
Saudi Arabia?
Al-Qaeda - even thou they're only there in small numbers and weren't there before W. and Cheney invaded?
Turkey?
Iran?
Syria?
Whatever happened to finding Osama Bin Forgotten, the guy who was actually responsible for 9/11?

Pelosi is correct when she says the president doesn't have plan.
Her critism of the president's handling of the war is apt.
Although sometimes I wonder if to her the president is the enemy, not thousands of Iraqis with guns and bombs.
Pelosi is correct when she says Americans voted for a winding down of the American involment in Iraq in the last election.
But Pelosi and other democrats lack credibility because:
1. While they have complained that the French and Germans aren't helping us in Iraq - they never complain that the Mexican government isn't helping us either. The Mexican government is vocally and dramatically against US activities in Iraq.
2. The democrats are for open borders, for the most part, and so they are not serious about making America safer. Pelosi is one of the most open border democrats in Congress. San Francisco is a sancutary city where tens of thousands of non-Americans recieve subsidized public housing.
3. If you're for open borders you are also for turning America into a Mexican nation. This is not an exagerration. The majority of the US population on the US coasts under age 18 is Hispanic. Domestic migration out of Los Angeles is at an all time high.
4. Over 80 percent of Hispanics (and especially Mexicans) would be against US involement in Iraq, even if were a success. To most Mexicans America is the big dictator supporter.
Bush's ignoring US border issues is directly related to American majorities being against the war.
All this follows from the fact that American's don't elect politicians that represent Americans, they represent international corporations whose only interest is to make money. And if more money can be made by investing in China - that money is going to China.

I find it hard to believe that ANYONE of sound mind still supports the Bushites and their neo-con henchmen.
The reasons against **MORE OF THE SAME** and govermental failures are obvious for progressives but it is the conservatives that I would question here...
Bigger more invasive goverment, Unsecured spending, Despotic behavior at home in the form of loss of personal freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and Constitution and abroad in the form of foreign wars of imperialism and aggression? What form of conservatism can this be that securing borders are ignored at our peril? What true conservative could condone much less defend the current climate of corruption and incompetence? Im doubtful a reasonable argument can be made against these statements or shall we count the indictments?
Lets all try to remember...Transparency in Goverment, Respect for our Institutions, Respect for the Citizenry of this nation, These are True conservative values NOT talking points.
Recent events and a unique mixture of what appears to be intentional institutional ineptitude, religious fervor in idealogy contrary to all reality, and an inability to say what is meant and mean what is said, SCREAM for accountability...
Iraq, Immigration and Border security, Outsourcing, Katrina and her aftermath, FEMA?, Alberto Gonzalez and the AG8, the trade imbalance, the budget deficit, Food safety and the FDA, The greatest income inequality since just prior to the great depression...All this and more has been wrought by the Republican Revolution...Are YOU better off now then you were 6 years ago? Nuff said.

When will people smarten up?
You can't have a war on terror that doesn't perpetuate more terror. The mentality of war creates & perpetuates terror.
The US public (overall it seems, not everyone of course)are letting themselves be herded like sheep to believe things that don't exist. Public in other countries do likewise.
Governments worldwide in this age, and in most others, amount to catastrophes. How can so many human beings allow themselves to be governed, guided and coerced by such greedy, self-serving, in-human fools?
Its all a gigantic joke. And a consistently deadly one.
But to have true and mature human leaders you first need a population that is mature and true and human.
Everyone needs to stop whining about this & that, us & them, and grow up.
There is no "us & them". There is just "everyone, all at once".
The government and what it does is a reflection of the people. You just can't get away from that. In every country, every culture. Come to terms with that and things will probably change.
But if we keep blaming others terror and war will be our common lot. It is our lot, as we speak. Has always been. Every generation experiences this, perpetuates this... in some form or other.
The War on Terror is a mighty lie that people seem to believe... amazing. If it was called the "War to Create Ever-More Terror for All Beings Everywhere" that would be a more honest description.
And the change starts with each one of us. Grow up, all of us!

So how about forgiving and loving your enemies? Nah, probably will happen as much as the Muslims becoming more liberal.

After reading most of these posts I have come to one conclusion. We should surrender to the Arabs and seclude ourselves as isolationists. The problem in Iraq is to whom do we surrender? Is it the Syrians, Iran or Al Qaeda? Some people believe there is not a terrorist threat. It would do well to remember Colonial Oliver North. Remember him?
He announced the threat of Osama Bin Laden long before he had amassed a large enough terrorist group to be a direct threat to our Country. Congress directly attacked him and went so far as to vilify him for using government money to install a security fence around his home. Both Republican and Democrats choose not to heed the warnings. Why should we expect better now?
The fact is that the Democrats are doing all in there power to make sure Bush does not succeed before the election. It is called gaining votes.
It clearly time to tuck our tail between our legs and run home, seal our boarders and let the rest of the world destroy themselves.

The whole of this world put together cannot win in Iraq militarily. How do you fight someone who is ready to blow himself up? What we need is diplomacy and dialogue.
We need to stop policing the world and stop deceiving ourselves as the ruler of the world. Can anyone imagine how secure we would be if we had used the hundreds of billions of dollars spent in Iraq in building security measures here at home?
It's share arrogance, sturboness and foolhardiness for anyone to think we can win militarily in Iraq. It's very shameful that we don't know when to back off a failed agenda. This reminds me of the saying that 'there comes a time in a war when a general has to retreat so as to be able to fight another day'. Even if we continue to stay in Iraq for 20 years, there will always be sucide bombers willing to carry on attacks on Iraqis and our troups.
We all need to fast and pray for God to open the eyes of this president to descern the truth and know when enough is enough. Even the Holy Bible says that when someone is to be destroyed, his heart is hardened first. When are we going to stop sheding innocent blood of our troups and that of Iraqis too?

Bush vetoed the War spending bill. He was dead wrong. Look at the facts. Look at what he stated to the world community: Whoever is not for us is against us, Axis of evil, They can run but they cannot hide, Smoke them out and kill them or bring them to justice. Certainly, other nations are more concern about Nuclear weapons because they do not trust the United States anymore. Since we went to war on a lie, and President Bush became trigger happy, and started the war without it being the last resort, certainly other countries will be concern about their security and threats of another war on their land. You know that this is the way dictatorships work. They are right and everybody else is wrong. They promise their people wonderful things. Then when they get in power they control and abuse them by using force, fear, divide and conquer techniques, etc. Bush knows dam well that the only common ground he is going to find is when the democrats agree with him. It is a crying shame that we do not have laws on the books that protect the American People from Bad and Corrupt Presidents and Vice Presidents. They came close to impeaching President Clinton due to some personal moral issues which in fact is nobodies business. The irony of it was that he was one of the best and smartest Presidents we ever had. And yet Bush and Cheney through their twisted minds, unjustly started a War that murdered hundreds of thousands of people, and are destroying this country and others, and they are still at it, and they want to do more of the same. Holy God, we cannot even start impeachment proceeding against Bush and Cheney. God help us, and have mercy upon the United States of America.

I have spent 15 months in Iraq, and am willing to go back. I believe in what we are doing there, and know when we leave before we are done, lots of blood will spill, first in Iraq and then sometime in the future there will be a big attack on the United States. It is sad that the Democrats attack everything Bush does. I have realized the democrats do not care about the United States... to them it is all about power. I have not heard anything meaningful out of the democratic party in years. I voted for Gore, but since 911, the democratic party has done nothing but attack Bush. It is pathitic!! The democrates say they are concerned about the troops, but yet they cut our funding. If you are concerned about us and/or the United States, let us do our jobs. If you cut our funding or make this "Limited Warfare", it will become Veitnam II.

The Bush administration's support of a foreign government for our so-called "National Interest," is, in reality, in the interest of "Big Money," and not, necessarily, in the best interest of the citizens of the US nor of the citizens of the government we support. Our troops are on foreign soil; foreign troops are not on our soil. The Republican led Senate and House voted to give retroactive immunity from prosecution for illegal acts committed by individuals of the Bush administration after the Supreme Court, ruled illegal, the wiretapping and torture permitted by the Bush administration. Our two hundred thirty-one year old nation, a "teenager" relative to the longevity of many of the world's nations, has interfered in the destiny of another nation with brazen disregard for its sovereignty and little support from other nations of the world. Would Americans have allowed a foreign nation to meddle in our Civil War, and if so, would we be the same nation today? The Middle East has been engaged in skirmishes for centuries, and when we pull out of where we are not wanted, their own people will, most likely, take care of their own matters. This administration has attempted to sew fear against pulling out of Iraq, by claiming it would be devastating to US interests, however, the damage, caused by our occupation, is already done. Humpty-Dumpty has already fallen off the wall, and "All the kings horses and all the kings men, can't put Humpty-Dumpty back together again." Investors who financially support a business which continues to flounder, will eventually, if prudent, decide to no longer continue to invest resources in that business, although those investors would surely have wished for the success, rather than failure and loss of their investment. Stop the administration's plundering of our resources and good name. Give us back our constitutional protections. Let us not be swayed by government propaganda designed to influence us to continue an unjust occupation. We can again have good reason to admire this great country that we love. Let's end the "United States of Fear."

DAVID A BELANGER, what are you doing? You just took my respect level down a notch.. do your job - that's what you joined for.
Posted by: twistedneck | May 6, 2007 5:45 AM
Most of you people fail at thinking.
There's a lot of HOPE that if the US pulls out, Iraqi's will be ablt to take out AlQaeda.
BS. AlQaeda is better prepared than they are.
Worlds largest oil reserve - in the hands of AlQaeda, Syria, or Iran would be bad.
There's this little cartel, that operates very similar to a Mexican drug cartel - its called OPEC and its controlled/operated by a conglomeration of Islamists. This cartel has US-Big-Oil by the balls. (and somehow you daft 'thinkers' blame the US's big oil.) Yet, Britain's faced the same OPEC leveraging.
We ask The Islamic League (er.. I mean OPEC) to permit religious freedom in their territories, citing it as a Human Right. They raise prices, and tell us to butt-out. Christians, Jews, Buddhists are not welcome in their kingdom - and though they still exist there, they are an oppressed minority.
I certainly appreciate a certain amount of Nihilism from our populace. It's the way Americans' have been cultured - through our music, our media, our movies, etc. We've grown up viewing the Govt as "The Man", and do anything to keep "The Man" from controlling our lives....
and yet... the irony is - "the man" is in disguise, in a real-to-life Wolf in sheeps clothing. The democrats have successfully shrouded themselves, and propogated myth and fear to win themselves congress, all the while proclaiming that republicans were the only ones campaigning on fear. (The democrats have fostered the belief of an American Tyranny - somehow 'idiot' Bush crossed the threshold of idiocy to become a mastermind. God I wish they'd decide one way or another - the shifting back and forth has caused me motion sickness.
Misunderestimated rings true. Bush is more than underestimated obviously - what with all the hoop-lah about John Kerry's bragging about his grades in College - we come to find out ol' Georgies grades were better.
Here's something else to sink your teeth into. Despite all the Democrats accusations, name-calling, and vitriol. Bush has never stooped to their level, and rarely defended himself against their BS.
This has made him 'appear' weak, and caused more arsehats to dogpile. This is why his own party is wavering. Bush likes being underestimated. In this day and age, its about the only way he can keep everyone guessing, or distracted from what hes been doing, and keep secrets from leaking.
So much blind faith has been put into the Democrats, forgetting that Sandy Berger stole and destroyed information from the National Archives pertaining to Bill's bumbling actions prior to Bush's presidency. Rather than it being seen for what it is - a coverup of unprecedented magnitude - He gets off scott-free, and the coverup is successful. (BECAUSE BUSH IS THE BAD GUY!!!!)
What will you do, when America pulls out and gas prices go to $6/gallon? 10$? 20?? Are you going to ride a bike for that 30 mile work commute?
Are you FOR or AGAINST OPECs ability to bribe/blackmail our Country and our Government?
Energy independance is key. But we still can't have any oil exploration, and we can't build any new rigs in the US, thanks to the EPA and other Enviro-whackos. So we're doomed here, unless some genius can figure out how to run a car on water and distribute such knowledge throughout the US BEFORE agents of OPEC have them assassinated. (RIP, Stan Meyers)
The hotbed, and source for 90% of these Terrorist organizations is Tehran - starting back in the Islamic Revolution (Ayatolla Khomeni) SINCE then, we've been terrorized, hijacked and attacked in one form or another for one reason or another.
So why Iraq? Many reasons. Sanctions weren't supposed to have gone on as long as they did. The sanctions were killing civilians, and not harming Saddam in any way shape or form. NOONE on the Security Counsil would even CONSIDER lifting them while Saddam remained in power.
In our fight with the Taliban in Afghanastan - Saddam shot at our planes in Northern and Southern Watch (A NATO administered, UN Mandated blockade to protect the Kurds, and Southern Shia.) This dishonored the CEASEFIRE TREATY that ended the Gulf War 1.
...and then you look at a world map...
Iran is on Iraq's Eastern border. Iran is on Afghanastan's Western Border. IF there were to be any leverage in influencing Iran - its in the threat of Armies on both of its borders - in effect surrounding them. A threat that rings hollow when half of our 'Government' seems eager to withdraw.
This gerrymandering by Democrats has undermined any conceivable 'pressure' (real or imagined) we could have put on Tehran.
As a result, Tehran is growing more violent and defiant. This is where the roots of Hezbollah, Hamas and others remain. If the Democrats were sincere, and serious about combatting terrorism, they should at least understand, or have acknowledged the basic principle advantage of having a hostile regime surrounded on all-sides.
But they don't. They want us to withdraw. Which begs the question...
How do they propose to leverage against Achmenijahd (sp?) and the army of Islamic Revolutionaries inside Iran when we pull out??
Iran will continue to use these groups as proxies to attack us, and our interests until we withdraw from the middle east entirely - and stop supporting Isreal. (so they can commit genocide, and recreate the Holocaust in their image. After all, the first holocaust was just a fake sham used to sieze Arab turf.)
Sure, we have problems. The problems are not America. (Though the enemy sure would like us to believe it is.)
With democratic rhetoric to back them, and sympathy from the media - The terrorists are STILL winning the propoganda war.
With nihilism so rife, and popular in todays American culture, we should've realized a long time ago that we couldn't win a propoganda war against anyone if we wanted to.
...and the idea of a 'Sanitized War' has made the job even harder - when we should've just stated, "The goal of DIPLOMACY is to prevent the horrors of War. War happens when DIPLOMACY FAILS, and in order to better preserve the want for DIPLOMACY over war, WAR should remain a deterrant, and remain as unsanitary as possible."
We didn't get the Japanese to back down by pussy-footing around, cherry-picking only military targets. We won because we destroyed a huge section of its governments tax base - its habitable land - and supporters.
That tends to make a Government think more clearly about 'Consequences'. It makes them want to work harder to talk things out, rather than fighting it out.
There's a reason people don't want war. There's a reason civilized people would prefer to talk things out.
Someone called us out, believing we don't have the will anymore. All these 'feel-good' politicians, and liberal arm-chair generals are well on their way toward helping to make that reality.
Yah. American needs to wake up. But not in the way most of the other comments here would like you to believe.

Can the rest of the world be wrong and only George Bush be the only one blind to the sufferings of the Iraqis? Since when has the US become so careless of the hardships occuring across Iraq and yet so unfeeling to their plight. The US has never been held in such contempt and disgust everywhere in the world! There were the days when American citizens has always been looked upon and be counted on to defend the weak, where we are looked upon as morally forthright and strong in principles.
Not anymore today, all thanks to George Bush.

Pelosi is right, of course she's the one who won't listen to Petraeus or the generals on the ground but she "knows" whats going on in Iraq.
Funny stuff.

ARTICLE I. FAILURE TO PRESERVE, PROTECT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION
In violation of the oath of office, which reads: `I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States', George Walker Bush, in his conduct while President of the United States has demonstrated a pattern of abuse of office and of executive privilege, and disregard for the Constitution itself.
This conduct includes the following:
Manipulating Intelligence and Lying To Justify War
In violation of the separation of powers under the Constitution and his subsequent obligation to share intelligence with the Congress, George Walker Bush, while serving as President of the United States of America, in preparing the invasion of Iraq, did withhold intelligence from the Congress, by refusing to provide Congress with the full intelligence picture that he was being given, by redacting information by, for example, removing portions of reports such as the August 6, 2001, Presidential Daily Brief, and actively manipulating the intelligence on Iraq's alleged weapons programs by pressuring the Central Intelligence Agency and other intelligence agencies to provide intelligence such that `the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy' as revealed in the `Downing Street Memo'. To this end, President George Walker Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld created the Office of Special Plans inside the Pentagon to override existing intelligence reports by providing unreliable evidence that supported the claim that Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction posed an imminent threat to the United States of America. By justifying the invasion of Iraq with false and misleading statements linking Iraq to the attacks of September 11, 2001, and falsely asserting that Iraq had a nuclear weapons program for which it was importing aluminum tubes and uranium, these assertions being either false, or based on `fixed' intelligence, with the intent to misinform the people and their representatives in Congress in order to gain their support for invading Iraq, denying both the people and their representatives in Congress the right to make an informed choice, George Walker Bush, President of the United States, did commit and was guilty of high crimes against the United States of America.
ARTICLE II. ABUSE OF OFFICE AND OF EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE
In violation of his oath to `faithfully execute the office of President of the United States', George Walker Bush, in his conduct while President of the United States, has consistently demonstrated disregard for that oath by obstructing and hindering the work of Congressional investigative bodies and by seeking to expand the scope of the powers of his office.
This conduct includes the following:
Failure To Uphold Accountability
In abrogation of his responsibility under the oath of office to take care that the Laws be faithfully executed, by which he agreed to act in good faith and accept responsibility for the overall conduct of the Executive Branch, a duty vested in his office alone under the Constitution, George Walker Bush, failed to take responsibility for, investigate or discipline those responsible for an ongoing pattern of negligence, incompetence and malfeasance to the detriment of the American people.
Those whom George Walker Bush, as President of the United States of America, has failed to hold to account include but are not limited to the following top-level officials in his administration:
(a) RICHARD CHENEY- In violation of his oath of office to support and defend the Constitution, Richard Cheney, Vice President of the United States of America, played a key role in manipulating intelligence in the interest of promoting the illegal invasion of Iraq by pressuring analysts at the Central Intelligence Agency to `fix' their intelligence estimates of the danger posed by Iraq in relation to weapons of mass destruction, whereby Richard Cheney, Vice President of the United States, did commit and was guilty of high crimes against the United States of America.
(b) CONDOLEEZZA RICE- In violation of her Constitutional duty to share and provide accurate and truthful intelligence information with the Congress, as former National Security Advisor to the President, did play a leading role in deceiving Congress and the American public by repeating and propagating false statements concerning Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction program, including false information that the purchase of aluminum tubes demonstrated that Iraq was pursuing a nuclear weapons program, false information that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium and false information that Iraq sought help in developing a chemical and biological weapons program; whereby Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State of the United States of America, did commit and was guilty of high misdemeanors against the United States of America.
By neglecting to superintend the conduct of these officials and to hold members of the Executive Branch responsible for their negligence or violations of law, George Walker Bush, President of the United States, did commit and was guilty of high misdemeanors against the United States of America.
Wherefore, by their aforementioned conduct, George Walker Bush, Richard Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice warrant impeachment, trial, and removal from office.
ARTICLE III. FAILURE TO ENSURE THE LAWS ARE FAITHFULLY EXECUTED
In violation of his duty under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States of America to `take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed', George Walker Bush, during his tenure as President of the United States, has violated the letter and spirit of laws and rules of criminal procedure used by civilian and military courts, and has violated or ignored regulatory codes and practices that carry out the law.
This conduct includes the following:
Illegal Domestic Spying
In violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) [50 U.S.C. Chapter 36], George Walker Bush did clandestinely direct the National Security Agency and various other intelligence agencies, in secret and outside the lawful scope of their mandates, for purposes unrelated to any lawful function of his offices, to conduct electronic surveillance of citizens of the United States on U.S. soil without seeking to obtain, before or after, a judicial warrant, thereby subverting the powers of the Congress and the Judiciary by circumventing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) courts established by Congress, whose express purpose is to check such abuses of executive power, provoking the presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to file a complaint and another judge to resign in protest, the said program having been subsequently ruled illegal (ACLU vs. NSA); he has also concealed the existence of this unlawful program of spying on American citizens from the people and all but a few of their representatives in Congress, even resorting to outright public deceit as on April 20, 2004, when he told an audience in Buffalo, New York: `any time you hear the United States Government talking about wiretap, it requires . . . a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so', whereby said George Walker Bush, President of the United States, did commit and was guilty of high crimes against the United States of America.
In all of this, George Walker Bush has repeatedly and unapologetically misled the American people and has sought to undermine the system of checks and balances established by the Founding Fathers. Wherefore George Walker Bush, by such conduct, and in the interest of saving our Constitution and our democracy from the threat of arbitrary government, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

President’s Narcissistic Personality Makes Him Deaf
Bush demonstrates a tin ear and a blind eye on a wide range of issues, not just Iraq.
Here are the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, 1994, commonly referred to as DSM-IV, of the American Psychiatric Association:
1. An exaggerated sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
2. Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. Believes he is "special" and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
4. Requires excessive admiration
5. Has a sense of entitlement
6. Selfishly takes advantage of others to achieve his own ends
7. Lacks empathy
8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him
9. Shows arrogant, haughty, patronizing, or contemptuous behaviors or attitudes
President Bush meets all of the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder. He is not going to change; but he is apt to get a lot worse when he is crossed.

To those of you who think we went to war on a lie, I would like to know what the supposed lie or lies happen to be.
If you tell me it was Bush's statements about Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction, I have a quiz. The winner will get 20 points. The quiz is as follows:
1) Who made the following statements? and,
2) when did he/she make the following statements?
"...., I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.
"The responsibility of the United States in this conflict is to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to minimize the danger to our troops and to diminish the suffering of the Iraqi people. The citizens of Iraq have suffered the most for Saddam Hussein's activities; sadly, those same citizens now stand to suffer more. I have supported efforts to ease the humanitarian situation in Iraq and my thoughts and prayers are with the innocent Iraqi civilians, as well as with the families of U.S. troops participating in the current action.
"I believe in negotiated solutions to international conflict. This is, unfortunately, not going to be the case in this situation where Saddam Hussein has been a repeat offender, ignoring the international community's requirement that he come clean with his weapons program. While I support the President, I hope and pray that this conflict can be resolved quickly and that the international community can find a lasting solution through diplomatic means."
(Clues omitted and replaced with "....")

For those of you who want to see Congress impeach President Bush, you must remember that Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution demands removal of office for someone impeached and convicted of Treason, Bribery or a high crime or misdemeanor. So, you have listed a lot of stuff about Bush that you don't like. Tell me how all this stuff constitutes grounds for impeachment. In other words, I would like book, page and verse that says he committed impeachable crimes.
For those of you who think that we are being cruel to the Iraqi people, my question to you is: What will happen to: a) the Iraqis; b) the Middle East; and c) the United States - when we leave? In other words, do you genuinely believe the blood letting will ease up, or cease, get worse or spin out of control? If so, why? If you think there will be peace, explain in your answer how domestic tranquility will spring forth, taking into account the political and cultural history of the area.
Be warned: I smell Woolite.

Dear C.S. Mills,
We are all in trouble. The American Psychiatric Association's definition of "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" bears a grim but familiar resemblance to some of the pseudo-liberal NEA's goals for school children. Maybe the NEA's success explains why children care more about getting something than doing something to earn what they get. Maybe it explains why children grow up unable to think for themselves, and why they merely content themselves with bleating the party line. "Bush lied, Baaaaaa. The war is lost, Baaaaa. Impeach Bush, Baaaaa."

Here you go, John W -
Federal law - Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 113C - Torture. Section 2340A.
(a) Offense. - Whoever outside the United States commits or
attempts to commit torture shall be fined under this title or
imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both, and if death results to
any person from conduct prohibited by this subsection, shall be
punished by death or imprisoned for any term of years or for life.
(b) Jurisdiction. - There is jurisdiction over the activity
prohibited in subsection (a) if -
(1) the alleged offender is a national of the United States; or
(2) the alleged offender is present in the United States,
irrespective of the nationality of the victim or alleged
offender.
(c) Conspiracy. - A person who conspires to commit an offense
under this section shall be subject to the same penalties (other
than the penalty of death) as the penalties prescribed for the
offense, the commission of which was the object of the conspiracy.
Conspiracy to commit torture overseas. Is that serious enough for you?
Posted by: tony | May 7, 2007 9:57 AM
Dear Tony,
Nice try, but I don't think there's a new Kewpie doll in your future. I, along with the rest of the public, am entirely unaware that Bush knowingly agreed to the infliction of extreme emotional/mental or physical pain on: 1) a U.S. national, or 2) a non-U.S. national present within the United States. There have been some vague allegations that torture has been inflicted on non-U.S. citizens outside the U.S. - like at Guantanamo Bay. But that would not bring Bush's or anyone else's conduct within the scope of the cited law. See U.S.C. Section 2340A, (b)(1) & (b)(2). Furthermore, conspiracy under federal law requires more than proof of some U.S. agency committing torture. One would have to show that Bush both knew about the proposed torture and did something to procure its commission. So, unless you are able to furnish facts of torture against a U.S. national or torture against a non-U.S. national inside the U.S., AND that Dubya knew of an procured that activity, your claim will fall flat on its face. Want to try again?

Pointing to video's of prominant Democrats agreeing with the Bush assessment that there were WMD back in 2002 does not negate the fact that these Democrats today say they (and the nation) were misled with false infomation that was handed to them by their leaders.
Posted by: Tony Martin | May 7, 2007 4:46 PM
Dear Tony Martin,
Was that a reference to the lengthy quote I posted? Look at it again.
It was Nancy Pelosi who said all of this. She was convinced that Saddam Hussein had WMD's and that he had to be forcibly removed because of his record as an international scofflaw.
But you are dead wrong on the date. It wasn't 2002.
She made the quoted statement on December 16, 1998. "[T]he president," to whom she made reference, was Bill Clinton. He had just authorized air or missile strikes against targets in Iraq.
That was almost two full years before Dubya was elected. Pelosi was a member of the House Intelligence Committee when she said this.
And Pelosi wasn't the only one either. Numerous Democrat politicians - including Kerry, Schumer, Levin, Feinstein, Dodd, President Clinton, and Madeline Albright - were making the same noises. The obvious truth is that the Democrats believed Saddam had WMD's and that he had to be taken down - long before Bush came to power.
Who was lying to the Democrats when they were in power to make them believe this stuff? We know it wasn't Dubya. How can they claim it was one of Bush's lies now, when they had deceived themselves into believing it then? Ask yourself honestly: Who is lying now?
Sadly, it is only because people are too memory challenged, deceived by the media and too trusting of their Democrat politicians that they bleat the party line: "Bush lied, Baaaaaaaaaa."

God I hate when I see that lame argument "nothing has happened to us since 9/11", "the world is safer without Saddam". BS!!! How many years before 9/11 had we had a terrorist act that killed over 2000 people? Answer: NEVER! To say that just becuase in 4 years we haven't had another attack is the most ridculous piece of logic that I have ever heard. The world is safer....jeez now that's even more laughable, how many killings a day did you hear about in Iraq prior to the war, 1 or 2 ever couple months...now 10 to 100 are being killed EVERY DAY. This just is more proof that Bush supporters are a bunch of idiotic, simple minded hypocrits with rely solely on what is being spewed to them from the administration. They don't think for themselves and rely on God or Bush to "tell them the truth". Idiots! It is a sad state of affairs in this country...very sad.
