Bloomberg for President? Not in New York: The Swamp

Mayor Bloomberg for president? It's not even realistic in New York…

A Quinnipiac University poll released this morning found that if Michael Bloomberg, who Tuesday left the Republican party and became an independent, ran for president, he'd have a tough time against some fellow New Yorkers.

Bloomberg, now in his second term as mayor, has said he is not interested in the White House, but speculation has soared in the last day about his intentions. Bloomberg has been said to be interested in the race, and is seen as a viable candidate if only because he could spend millions on the race.

But the survey, which asked 1,369 New York state residents their choices for president, illustrated what a tough time he would have even at home.

It asked respondents to assume nominees would be Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, now in her second term as a senator from New York, and Republican Rudolph Giuliani, who served two terms as New York City Mayor.

Clinton topped the poll with 43 percent, followed by Giuliani's 29 percent. Far behind was Bloomberg, at 16 percent.

More potentially distressing for the current mayor was that even in New York City, he lagged far behind. Clinton polled 54 percent, Giuliani 14 percent and Bloomberg got 22 percent.

And that was his best showing. Bloomberg was the choice of 21 percent of suburban voters, and 10 percent of upstate voters.

"Bloomberg for President? Not in New York State," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a statement. Without Bloomberg in the race, Clinton would top Giuliani by 15 percentage points in New York and beat Arizona Sen. John McCain by 24. About the only Republican with a decent showing is when Giuliani is matched against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. They tied with 43 precent each.

And unsurprisingly, Clinton is by far the choice of New York Democrats, winning 44 percent support. Second is former Vice President Al Gore, who has not shown an inclination to make the race, at 18 percent. New York Sen. Christopher J. Dodd is listed as a dash, meaning he polled less than 1 percent.

Among Republicans, Giuliani tops the list with 46 percent. Second is former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is expected to announce his candidacy soon, at 14 percent.

Other than the Beltway media and the man himself, who takes a Bloomberg candidacy seriously?

Meanwhile, in the biggest political news of the week, Fred Thompson has overtaken Rudi Giuliani for number 1 in the GOP presidential race in one poll (Rasmussen). The lead (28%-27%) is within the margin of error. McCain and Romney trial at 10% each.

This is the first time, in a national poll, that Rudi hasn't been number 1.

This being the Republican race, you won't hear about it in the DNC's "Swamp".

Rasmussen also has Clinton up 11% over St. Barack.

Bruce,

From the TRIBUNE, looks like Rudy had "better" things to do rather than participate in Baker's Iraq Study Group.

You mean he's not really the hero of 9/11 those in the G(ullible)O(dd)P(utzes) think?

Do YOU have spellcheck Bruce??

Bruce,

What does it say that a not-quite-announced candidate best known for being an actor and having a lax work ethic even for a Senator is now leading the GOP field? And what happened to your incessant "buh buh buh the 'liberal media' just doesn't understand us, it makes perfect sense that Rudy Giuliani is leading the field for the GOP even though he's socially liberal."

Any comment on NYers preferring Hillary nearly 2-1 over Giuliani? This should not be surprising as anyone who knew Giuliani's NYC would have LAUGHED if you told them that Mr. Giuliani would ever lead the GOP field for President.

Kenny B.,

Let's say your Rudy. You're on your way to give a $$$ speech $$$. (This is after blowing off the Iraq Study Group.)

Anyhoo...

You're on your way to give a speech and you suddenly see a woman you'd dump your current wife (currently on #9?) for and she's also selling a pair of pumps that are to die for!

What do you do?

If hearing the calls on Washington Journal are any indication these numbers are probably very close to haw people feel. On the other side...Ever hear of answering a poll in a way just to skew the numbers?

As Bruce's "poll" will acknowledge, I think it says alot about the state of the Republic Party when a B-list actor from Hollywood, who spent most of his career as a corprate lobbyist and was involved in more backroom DC deals than Jack Abramoff ever was AND is not even officially running for office yet....is leading in the polls for the Wingnut Party.

I've heard that the dead body of Ronbo Reagan aka "Zombie Reagan" is still polling at 13% for the Republican Party 08 nomination.

lochness,

Don't pay attention to Brucebot's "poll" numbers, the robot gets his info from the RNC in the morning and spits it out the rest of the day....it makes me laugh because he thinks that people still beleive that Republican propaganda crap.
