It was head-to-head Democratic fundraising Monday evening in Chicago.
Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois set up shop at Fulton's on the River for an event that was expected to raise about $100,000. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York was about six blocks south at the Palmer House Hilton for one that was expected to raise about $750,000.
Reporters were not allowed into either gathering.
Obama, meanwhile, was expected to attend a second Chicago fundraiser Tuesday morning, at the very same hotel where Clinton held her event. His was scheduled less than 12 hours after her guests were to clear out.
All of the presidential candidates are racing toward a June 30 deadline for second-quarter fundraising that will be used by some to help judge their viability as candidates.

Comments
Hillary Clinton's fundraising performance in Barack Obama's home turf demonstrates that her much greater political experience, name recognition and wealth of connections is beginning to be felt on the campaign trail. Without question, Hillary Clinton is cementing her front-runner status, while containing the challenge for the Democratic presidential nomination from Senator Obama.

The firefighters forum was postponed so I guess Barack scheduled another fundraiser at the last minute for tomorrow.

I'm going to donate money to both of these fine Democratic candidates campaign's for President.
The last thing America needs is another Republican President.

Sheldon,
Barack Obama raised over $1M in NYC a few months ago. This is Hillary's big fundraiser in Chicago. Obama has held several already.

I like them both and have given each of them money. I also echo Shermans sentiment. The last thing America needs is another Republican President. Yes neo-con wing nuts I've made up my mind. I was open to a candidate from either party but the Republicans are fielding nothing new. Just the same old pandering to the base that has left our country in a world of hurt!!!

I wonder which candidate Myron Cherry will be donating to. Maybe both.
Read about Tony Rezko's friend Myron Cherry here:
NEW YORK - A Chicago lawyer linked to the public corruption scandal involving Barack Obama's controversial political patron planned to co-host a fundraiser Monday for Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Myron Cherry, a longtime Democratic fundraiser, appeared in a federal indictment against Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who faces extortion and fraud charges related to an Illinois public pension fund....

Go Hillary!
But, unlike others, please don't resort to cheesy gimmicks like "win a free date with the candidate and his wife!" just to outraise your opponent for the quarter.
After all, this is the presidency we're talking about. As rough and tumble as the race may be, a bare modicum of decorum is still expected...

In many ways, Obama is a clear underdog when you compare him to Hillary.
She has the pedigree of being the wife to a two term USA president, she has been in Senate longer and she enjoys immense personal connection of super rich and influencial personalities within and outside Democratic Party.
Clearly this battle may actually look like a perfect mismatch, remember David and Goriath?
Goriath had the the physical Muscles, alot of War experience and a huge "well equiped army". The only strength that David had was his intelligence, faith, courage and self believe.
Goriath had the power of the army but David had the power of God and the people.
Hillary may have all the power of the big money and name recognition but Barrack Obama makes up for these with his brilliance, youth, faith, self believe, courage, physical energy and most important he has the majority of American people behind him.
Remember the result of David and Goriath Duel? She may have the upperhand now, but that may change dramatically in the next few months. The power of the people always favour the underdog and the results of this duel will certainly not be any different.GOOD LUCK OBAMA.

As much as I like Senator Clinton I am convinced she cannot win a general election.
If she wins the nomination she's got my vote (here's the but part) BUT she is 1) viewed by many as getting where she is because of Bill 2) That Bill will be the master behind the throne.
These and other reasons are while you hear the RNC and Faux News, Limpbag and other Machivallian operatives talking about what a strong candidate she is. They think she is the most easily beaten out of the Democratic crop of candidates.

Hey racist guy. Stop with the insult muslims thing. Continuing to bring up Obama's middle name in this fashion is blatantly racist and should not be tolerated here in The Swamp. Not to mention that your a psychotic little dolt. Please remove racial and ethnic slurs from this blog.

Paulo, your constant racist attacks against Barack Obama are truly pathetic. Go back to being a slumlord and leave The Swamp for more intelligent people.

Just biding my time until these two put on the boxing gloves and show their true colors. The "evil Hillary' has yet to rear it's ugly head. but it's coming, mark my word. She will stop at nothing to win the nomination. Just ask Vince Foster....oh wait, you can't...he's dead.

Logic Prisoner, do you know what Paulo was subjectively thinking when he made his post? Maybe he was saying people are not going to elect someone with the same name as a notorious dictator, rather than having anything to do with being Muslim. You are quick to call him a racist, but I question your motives. First, Islam is not a race. Rather, a good example of racism is Marko's post, which you are notably silent on. Could it be because Marko didn't take a shot at Obama?
Posted by: Herbie H. | June 26, 2007 12:27 PM
Anthony- Good post, and I hope you're right about Obama, but please buddy: it's Goliath. With an L.
___________
Obama's genuine disposition and intelligence really give him one up on Hill in my mind. I always loved Bill, and eight years ago I was really excited about supporting Hillary. And she'll still get my vote in the General should she win the nom, but for now, I'm strictly a Barack man.

Senator Hillary Clinton can win the general election. She has the experience, brains, guts,
recognized all over the world for her savvy knowledge of our country and foreign countries. I have nothing against Obama except that he is too young and inexperienced. We need Hillary Clinton as President. She is the best!

So does the '12 presidential campaign start early next year?
I'm already sick of the campaigning and the election is over a year away. I think people who don't vote or don't vote in every election are going to be completely turned off by next November.
Posted by: Cheryl | June 26, 2007 1:54 PM
Herbie,
What if a notorious dictator was named John or Michael? No one could ever run for president if their middle name was the same? I would hope Americans are brighter than that and would vote based on the issues not because of someone's birth name. And for Paulo to keep posting the same thing over and over is immature and pointless. Perhaps he could enlighten us with some actual reasons to vote for someone other than Obama?
Come to think of it, anyone named George shouldn't consider running for president in the future since America's first dictator is named George.
Posted by: Marko | June 26, 2007 2:15 PM
Marko, your post is not responsive to anything I said. I'm not saying people of a certain name shouldn't run for president. My point with Paulo's post was simply that on its face, it was not necessarily racist. I can't say the same for yours.

I have a friend in Arizona who saw a TV ad supposedly sponsored by Obama that put Hillary's head on a muscular body and had her smashing things. This ad angered my friend enough that she is now supporting Hillary. Before, she had sent money to both.
Was this a legitimate ad from the Obama camp?

Correct on both points Herbie. I won't defend or condone attacks such as Paulos on an entire religion and those with Muslim names many of who come from Islamic countries. Racisism or attacks on someones religious beliefs you get the drift. Prejudice in print should not get through the rigorous Swamp screening process. Paulo and Markos comment cross a line that should be drawn to maintain a slight hint of decorum. Clearly Marko's comment posted after mine. Paula please present an arguement that doesn't reveal you to be the insulting little intolerant, xenophobic, malcontent that you appear to be. But that's what you bring to the table. Nothing.

The only hillary is highly recognised and esteemated by the media and people is because of Bill Clinton. Hillary and Bill don't even live together up till today. The only reason why Bill is beside her during campaing trials is because how Amricans would react if Bill isn't helping her. Look people! take it or leave it. Hillary will not make a good president. Believe me! Obama is the bomb. Go Obama!!!

Carolyn, your friend in Arizona is very overprivileged. I wish I could see that commercial. I'm sure I would be laughing my *ss of right now. Anyone who changes their candidate based on one commercial needs to learn to read. It probably wasn't an Obama sponsored commercial. If it was, at least the man has a great sense of humor.

With the mess that has been made of our country on both the domestic and international fronts, there really is only one candidate that can hit the ground running and carry out the will of the American people. That candidate is Hillary Clinton. We saw what a disaster "on the job training" is with President Bush. Let's not let the "who you want to have a beer with" mentality reign again. Competence over style is what Hillary has to offer.
Posted by: Hans | June 27, 2007 2:10 AM
It is unfortunate that Obama has decided to "go negative" so early on in the race for the presidency. It is, of course, ironic that the least experienced candidate among the Democrats chooses to take aim at the preparednesss of one of the most experienced leaders in the field. I had hoped that Senator Obama would have the judgment not to "swift boat" a member of his own party..the candidate most likely to succeed as the Democratic nominee. Although Obama would certainly be an improvement over President Bush, Senator Clinton is clearly the better option. The next president of the United States will have the unenviable task of repairing the horrific damage of the Bush administration and charting a new course toward peace and prosperity. May the wind blow at your back Hillary.

The disappointing thing about Senator’s Obama and Clinton is there need to win at any costs. Along with any of the candidates this election is expected to pass the Billion with a B mark in terms of spend, and that money quite frankly could be used in better ways then to make salacious attacks on one another and people you will inevitable have to work with again. By the way for those who want to judge on a persons race, faith or gender – GET A LIFE!
As to the political fundraising prowess – who cares? 21 million, 23 million, 10 million – whose counting and for what – when it is said and done hundreds of millions will be collected and spent all to see who get to pick up after sloppy boy Bush – not an enviable position quite frankly!

Hilary is good, and would make a fine president, but, after reading Obama's books, remembering his distaste at the war from the getgo, and listening to his outstanding speeches, I would consider myself an idiot to not rally behind him. The man is a genius, and the fact that he is even puttingup a fight, with his age and so called "lack of experience," should tell us something about how great he really is (besides, if Hilary was elected, that would mean the last 2 deccades would be run by the same two families. Democracies shouldn't roll that way). And furthermore, he has been drawing several comparisons to John F. Kennedy, who I think would have been considered the greatest president ever if he wasn't assasinated. And think of how much of an upgrade his charisma and sophisticated rhetoric would be to this Texan who shouldn't have gotten passed grammer school.
Posted by: Shayan | June 27, 2007 4:36 PM
Btw, I doubt Hilary will end up raising more than Obama by the end of the year. What everyone fails to point out when talking about her first quarter total is that $11 million of it was from her Senate campaign. Furthermore, Obama had more than twice as many donors, who donated smaller amounts, and whom he can go back to later. The same is not true for Hilary, who, after recieving a list of 200,000 donors from her husband, was only able to convince 40,000 to give her money. Most of these donors gave the maximum 2,300, so she will not be allowed to go back to them. THis simple fact is what is going to pull Obama far ahead by the end of the year.

Its so funny reading comments from campaign executives, pretending to be normal readers, writing comments. I like Hilary and would vote for her in the general election but a good leader is supposed to be able to be in a state of empathy with the people and I am not sure she can do it. For now, I am voting for Obama.
Posted by: Benjamin | June 27, 2007 4:54 PM
For those of you Hillary doubters remember she was not to win New York either.
The funny thing about politics is not about he who raises the most money - but rather she who has the most clout!
In the end Obama may be the more charasmatic of the bunch, but the one who can fix (and I do mean fix) America's issues is Clinton.
She not only has the right pedigree to do the job, but she's tough as nails and quite honestly the best to do the job successfully given all that has happened over the past 8 years.
BTW - Obama may have a really hard time getting the nomination if he cannot demonstrate his positions - that's the problem with him acting like Switzerland - neutrality and not taking a stand can work very much against you.
At least you know where Hillary stands.
Posted by: Adam | June 28, 2007 10:32 PM
BTW -
Obama has yet to reach out for the Black vote - and simply because he is black does not automatically give it to him. In fact more African American organizations are rallying behind Senator Clinton then Obama.
We should also not underestimate the power of Bill! He will be a major factor to contend with for the Obama groupies and his advisors trying to disparage and go negative.
While Obama may have Oprah's endorsement, Hillary does have Bill!
Ten to one on the political stage Bill carries far greater weight then the talkshow queen.

I think it is odd that a female presidential candidate is constantly being rated by her husband's accomplishments/downfalls. No one cared about whether or not JFK was a good husband or father. The same with our current president. It amazes me how much men get away with and can still be considered credible in American society. Hillary went to Yale, graduated at the top of her class, worked in the whitehouse under Jimmy Carter -- helping him pass several bills at that time that are still in effect for the protection of the poor and underpriviledged, has been volunteering since the age of 23, and has given speeches around the world that have been considered paramount. It amazes me that so many people (especially women) overlook all of these accomplishments that she's made on her own, and try to judge her through other people, and not by her own accomplishments. It's sad, and that it why one of the greatest presidents we could ever have may not be in office. She has worked HARD and she covers the ground on which she stands. On her own. If you are going to criticize her, at least know who the hell she is!
HILLARY 2008!!!
Posted by: Hill-Supporter | July 10, 2007 4:17 PM
its sad that oprah is taking sides. she does not believe in marriage. she love children but dont want any of her own. hilary experienced the hardship and reality of marriage but learned to forgive. who has a better understanding and better judgement in life?. more power to you hilary. your strength will overshine all the others. you are also very qualified for the job. women who will not vote for you, are blinded with no good reason at all. you have my vote and my prayers.

It amazes me how people go on judging someone because of his colour. When will this end? Americans you're showing bad example by playing politics on racism lines. Obama is young, energetic and very intellectual. I'm a kenyan and it really does not matter to me who wins. But atleast vote for someone whom you think has the best policies that will help the people of America, not because someone is black or white and that probably that one has a muslim name in between his name. I thought you're much smatter that? when are you going to grow up and stop the hate thing? Whether white or black, whether muslim or christian, whether arabic or hindu, we are one, we're human beings. And believe me if we leave like this regardles of what religion you are, regardless of whether you're black or white we will never have regional disputes and wars. All of us will be friends. Stop the stigmas that exist, about religion and who is the super power and who is not. So if you want to vote Obama or HIllary as the next president of America then vote them according to their policies and idiologies not because Obama is black and not because Hillary is woman who happens to be the wife of ex US president. Leave Clinton and leave the muslim name out of this and vote them on their policies.

I agree with Shayan, It is time for some freshness in the whitehouse. I have read both candidates websites as well as Senator Edwards. From what I have read, Obama stands out above the rest. He not only has clear goals but details of how to accomplish those. Furthermore, his record may be short, however it is full of bypartisan initiatives. This country needs a leader who can work across party lines, and who can bring some unity to our nation. Thus I am supporting Obama.
