Conservative senators ask Bush to enforce current border laws: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

Some of the Senate's most conservative Republicans who oppose the immigration-reform bill in its current state, sent President Bush a letter before today's lunch meeting with Senate Republicans.

It asked him to put in place already authorized border security measures, regardless of what happens with moribund bill put on ice last week after its supporters couldn't muster enough votes to end debate. In otherwords, they were asking, just like the women in the Grassfire.org advertising campaign, "Where's the fence?"

The letter and it's timing is what's normally called a pre-emptive strike.

Here's the press release containing the letter:

For Immediate Release Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Senators Ask the President to Enforce Current Border Security Laws

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley along with several of his colleagues have asked President George Bush to enforce the border security laws already authorized by Congress regardless of whether the Senate passes an immigration reform bill.

The request comes prior to Bush’s visit to Capitol Hill to address Senate Republicans during their regularly scheduled policy lunch.

Here is a copy of the letter.

President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

We respectfully ask that your Administration enforce the border security laws that have already been authorized by Congress regardless of whether the Senate passes the immigration reform bill. The bill assumes that several critical border security benchmarks can be achieved within 18 months. These security triggers are already authorized under current law and can be completed without the immigration bill. We believe these enforcement measures are vital and should not wait until Congress passes additional immigration reforms.

Securing the border is the best way to restore trust with the American people and facilitate future improvements of our immigration policy.

Sincerely,
Jim DeMint of South Carolina
Tom Coburn of Oklahoma
Michael Enzi of Wyoming
David Vitter of Louisiana
James Inhofe of Oklahoma
Jim Bunning of Kentucky
Chuck Grassley of Iowa
John Ensign of Nevada
Jeff Sessions of Alabama

Republican smack down!

Cool!

I think it is pretty obvious from the comments here that the Democrats are in favor of this amnesty bill. Republicans are almost universally against it (except for Bush).

I think Bush should let this die and let the Democrats run on immigration amnesty as part of their 2008 platform.

"I'm not apart of a redneck agenda"
GREEN DAY

My rough estimate is that the Democrats are 80/20 in favor while the GOP is 60/40 against. McCain and Giuliani are in favor.

What is the right's vision for this fence? Hundreds of miles of barbed wire, dogs, gun towers, floodlights? Do they construct border guard cities out in the desert to man this fiasco? Are they going to extend it out to sea, up to the Canadian border?

What do they do at the existing crossings? Inspect every vehicle and back up traffic for fifty miles or just close them and shut down the local economy?

Sounds like the old Iron Curtain or the Berlin Wall. I thought the hero of all right wing bible thumpers and other hillbillies, Ronnie Ray-gun, was against that sort of stuff?

The repugnicans should try to find a solution that might really work instead of one that only appeals to flag waving simpletons.

Why can't politicos understand. We do not want those "Meskin" servants as citizens. We want them just where they are, mowing lawns, picking tomatoes, and fixing roofs. If they were citizens they would go after better jobs and who will pick tomatoes then? Besides, they are short, dark and have big families. In ten years there will be thirty million if them.

Gary Dee,
McCain and Giuliani are in favor.

Giuliani is NOT in favor.

Hmmm, polls show the country is against this amnesty bill by 75/25. Republicans moreso against it but so far a majority of Democrats are against it as well. It's mostly the Left that is in favor of amnesty because the Left believes there should be no borders.

And, while the Left says it's for higher salaries, the reality is that illegal immigration drives down salaries. More proof that the Left is nothing but LIES.

John E posteth and sayeth:

John E:

It seems to me that this event undercuts your monolithic view of the Republican Party as being full of neo-cons. If they were all neo-cons, then they would march in lock-step with the President - just like you have said many times before.

Well, look at them. They are marching to the beat of a different drum. They are standing up for the rule of law, and not for Duh'bya's vision of cheap labor for big business. Isn't that refreshing? Sounds like they might be (dare I say it?) - real conservatives in the Republican Party.

Bill H,
Sounds like the old Iron Curtain or the Berlin Wall. I thought the hero of all right wing bible thumpers and other hillbillies, Ronnie Ray-gun, was against that sort of stuff?

So the Democrats are against a fence, right? I think they should run on that in 2008. No fence.

Johnny D and S. Sherman,
Please tell us how you plan to get rid of 12 million illegal immigrants. Who pays? What is your alternative plan? Complaining is not a plan.

John D.,

You forgot the "Looney" part.

"No borders"

Please.

John, whatever credibility and/or opinion swaying you might want to have goes right out the window with the way over the top nonsense.

Little Johnny Tsunami,

I know an RR robot like you probably still won't understand this but I'll give it a go anyway:

THIS BILL IS BEING PUSHED BY A REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATION!

Where's your outrage at them, Little Johnny?

John E.
thanks for giving me another reason the hate Green Day.

I always wonder what another of the left's pet ideas, the increase in the minimum wage, will do for illegal immigration.

I suggest that it will increase the incentive for employers to hire illegals. Illegals bid down the price for low-skilled labor, such jobs as landscaping, mowing lawns, busing tables. Employers can't hire a citizen or a legal immigrant for less than minimum wage, but can hire illegals; after all, who is someone here illegally to complain to? "Oh, Mr. Garza, you're illegal. Well, we've got a bus loading for Mexico out back right now. You're in seat 12-C." Increasing the minimum wage will increase the spread between what an employer can pay an illegal and what they have to pay someone here illegally, and will create more jobs for illegals and fewer for citizens.

Jethro,
Please tell us how you plan to get rid of 12 million illegal immigrants. Who pays? What is your alternative plan? Complaining is not a plan.

No mass deportation is necessary.

1) Tighten up the border. (Build the fence and hire more guards)
2) Come up with a tamper-proof ID card
3) Increase penalties for employers who hire illegals.

This isn't rocket science.

John W,

I give you credit for being a "some-what" independent thinker (for a Republican) and I'll sit back and watch while the Necons crush you again.

P.S. Lay off the Shakespeare stuff, will ya?

Um, if I remember correctly the 1986 bill called for punishing employers who hired undocumented workers. If employers didn't hire these folks, there would be little incentive to cross the border illegally. I don't see the Republican hue and cry to actually enforce THAT part of the law.

oh, wait, THOSE are the people giving money to the Republican party. Never mind. Let's build a fence!

Let's build a fence!

And Halliburton can build it! A twofer!

Joining the alleged haters ,eh.

Jethro, please tell me where i have said throw the 12 million back. Never said that. And, yes, it's not completely feasible. However, there still needs to be a process for them to either stay and pay some fines or go back to Mexico. And the border needs to be tightened up. This bill is flawed in many ways, yet I don't completely agree with the Tom Tancredo position, nor do I completely agree with the Bush/Kennedy/McCain position.

And, demented johnny E., as usual you are completely clueless.

So the Democrats are against a fence, right? I think they should run on that in 2008. No fence.

sherm,

I think we should probably keep the fence around your institution. It wouldn't be too good to have you running loose.

I'm just suprised that John E. could spell Tsunami.

Catherine,
As usual, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Border fence is no magic bullet and here's a few reasons why:

And I know many of you don't give a crap about the environmental consequences, like the threat to wildlife and a fragile desert ecosystem, but here it is:

"No mass deportation is necessary...This isn't rocket science."

You left the part out about what you'd do with 12 million illegal immigrants. If you aren't going to deport them and you don't want them to have a path to legalization what is your solution?

Jethro,
You left the part out about what you'd do with 12 million illegal immigrants.

If a tamper-proof ID is in place and employer sanctions are increased, it will become impossible for most to get work. If they cannot get work, they will go back to their home countries.

When I was a kid, we moved to California but my father could not get a job he liked there so we moved back to Chicago. This happens all the time.

If they cannot get work, they will go back to their home countries.

Posted by: S. Sherman | June 13, 2007 11:44 AM

If?? If?? What if they don't leave? If they don't have jobs how are they going to buy a plane, bus or train ticket home? How bout we dump them on your doorstep until they scrounge up enough money to go home....thousands of freaking miles away.

In the 1970's, the liberals of this country were concerned about the rising population growth of The United States . And what the effects of this rise in population would have on the environment. They were concerned about more land use , more pollution, more urban over crowding, and more use of energy. All of which would increase with a continually growing population. They came up with a slogan called Zero Population Growth. At that time the country had about 200 million people in it. The theory of Zero Population Growth is to drastically limit immigration and also to limit the size of families to 2 offspring each. All of which would equal the number of people who die each year. This theory would deal with the unintended consequences of an ever increasing population by keeping the population of the country at about 200 million. Now The United States has about 300 million people it . What happened to Zero Population Growth? I guess we need more people in this country. More people who will need housing which will create more urban overcrowding. More people who will use energy which will create more pollution. More land use to create agriculture that a larger population would require. Not to mention the increase cost to the tax payer for the social services that a larger population would need. Also keep in mind of the competition for employment opportunities that are forever decreasing. Do we really want to add more people to this country. People should think about the long term consequences of this bill. I guess the Left of this country doesn't believe in it's rhetoric!

If Bush is in favor of this legislation, it can't be very good for the working people or the middle class of this country. The same people who are being denied a decent wage from their employers. Or the ones who are being fired because of corporate restucturing.Which is an excuse for "we want cheap labor." I guess the corps need the cheaper labor that this bill will give them.

Jethro,
What if they don't leave? If they don't have jobs how are they going to buy a plane, bus or train ticket home?

This is silly. How did they get the money to get here???

Believe me, they will make it out. For those who can't afford it, I would be happy to have the government buy them a ticket home.

The current immigration bill envisions a certain number of people being denied "Z visas" and being deported. We will be paying for their transportation home anyway.

Giles,
I love how fringe movements get tied to all "liberals". Guess that means that I should be asking you what happened to the Nazi movement on the right. Don't you believe in your rhetoric?

To John: Zero Population Growth wasn't a fringe movement. When I was a student at Berkely during the late 60,s and early 70,s it had the following of the student union there which spread this philosophy to the other student groups through out the nation. Infact, The United Nations still encourages ZPG for developing nations. And it is easy to label a person a Nazi when that person does'nt beleive in ones political philosophy. I guess, I could label a person who does'nt believe in my political philosophy a Stalinist. Should I? I use to be a liberal, until I had to work and pay taxes. I don't know if your an unemployed college student with ideals as I was. If you are, wait till you have to support a family and pay taxes to support others.

I guess a lot of liberals have a high opinion of the president when he does something that fits with their political beliefs.
Something like immigration reform.

Hey John . Tallking about fringe ideas of the left. As Churchill said," Those who aren't liberal by the time their thirty have no heart and those who aren't conservative by the time their forty have no brain."
Please ,I don't want to hear from those who have no brain. But I probably will.
