DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Standing in the bed of a silver pick-up truck, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama kicked off a nationwide door-to-door canvass here Saturday afternoon.
"In a presidential campaign, we've become so accustomed to TV ads and big money and big fundraisers and debates, but the truth is that's not how change happens," he told several hundred people gather in a baseball field behind an elementary school here.
The effort was designed to gain media attention and test how well his campaign's online supporters can be converted to real life field organizing.
"The reason we are canvassing today is to make sure that everybody in Dubuque and all across the country understand that we are in one of those moments where we can really make a difference," Obama said.
Under clear blue skies, the Illinois Democrat was set to knock on some doors himself, as thousands nationwide fanned out to do the same.
"I appreciate the big guy upstairs for creating this great weather," he told the crowd. "I hope everybody put on their walking shoes. I hope everybody is ready to get some exercise. We're going to knock on some doors. We're going to talk to people. And when we do that, I guarantee you, we're not just going to win a campaign. We're going to transform the country."

Obama is an Illinois Senator. Why is he in Iowa? Aren't we his constituents? What's more important here, the people of Illinois or his career?

So B. Obama says:
"We're going to knock on some doors. We're going to talk to people. And when we do that, I guarantee you, we're not just going to win a campaign. We're going to transform the country."
It seems to me that, to transform the country by knocking on doors and talking to people, he would have to have a transforming message. So, what's the message? What new and "audacious" plan does he hope to convey?
He will be making a big mistake if he thinks he can get away with simply re-packaging the party line in his fresh new face and optimistic outlook. If all he can offer is more socialism, I'll say, "No, thanks, my life is already harder than it needs to be." Then I'll close the door and go back to watching Beany and Cecil on that beautiful sunny day with blue skies.

And for the news Obama's Swamp publicists don't want you to know about.....
The latest Rasmussen poll has Republican Rudi Giuliani (who gets less coverage than Bono in the Swamp) beating Hillary and beating St. Barack by double digits.
"In an Election 2008 match-up of the early frontrunners, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani leads New York Senator Hillary Clinton 47% to 44%. Last month, the two New York politicians were tied 45% to 45%.
Clinton has consistently been competitive with Giuliani, but has typically trailed the Mayor by a few percentage points throughout the early polling on the race. A poll released earlier this week showed Giuliani has opened a double-digit lead over Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D)."

Barack is building a great deal of momentum that will get him both the nomination and the presidency. He's exactly what this country needs. The GOP candidates are making the idiotic mistake of embracing Bush's policies.

Big deal, you're going to vote Republican anyway.

Oh great. Now you've done it.
Now The Swamp will post a snarky hit piece about Giuliani.

Hey Bruce,
Pro-abortion gay loving Giuliani has no chance making it through the GOP contest. I repeat, NO Chance. Same for John McCain.

Obama is an idiot. It's sad that a moron like him can run for President. Fortunately he has no chance of getting close to elected.

Obama is a "empty shirt" because nothing new is coming out of it !
He keeps playing his "African-American" status when we all know he is as much white as he is black.

Bruce - For a guy who seems to be so gung ho about Mr Guiliani, and one who has shown himself to be able to spell on all other occasions, why is it so hard for you to get Rudy's first name right? It ends with a "y" not the ever so much more effeminate "i" that you seem to be unable to keep yourself from using.

Oh, well. I thought with this new look and the admonition that posts would have to be approved that the tone of this blog might improve, that we would see an end to the personal attacks and name-calling. But, alas, no. Make a requirement that posters must log in with their user name (which is tied to a valid address) and that name-calling will result in banishment. you have a lot of weeds and undergrowth that is choking off lively progressive discussion.

John E:
You keep suggesting that I will vote Republican. That is not a sure thing. I voted for Bill Clinton when he ran against Dubya's daddy. Why? Daddy-Dubya's leadership was flat, taxes were going up, he couldn’t control the size of government, and I couldn't stand four more years of worrying about Vice-President Rain Man being a heart beat away from the presidency. Bill, in contrast, sounded more conservative than the so-called conservatives. As it turned out, Bill was far more fiscally conservative than Dubya. The problem now is that I don’t see another Bill Clinton-like candidate among Democratic Party contenders. Maybe it’s the media’s fault, but all I hear are candidates vying for even larger spending programs at the expense of the market. That’s not good government in my book. So you shouldn’t make snap judgments about my voting tendencies based on party lines. I vote based on my perception of long term policies, and not out of loyalty to a single party.
And, yes, I do want to see the GOP change direction. No GOP contender will get my vote if he or she is not committed to fiscal responsibility and accountability; efficient, small government, constitutional orthodoxy, and disentanglement in foreign affairs. We are simply too far in debt and in too much trouble in the rest of the world to afford anything else. If the GOP can’t deliver on this, I may very well vote as an Independent to express my views.

Socialist hate Obama. They trash him all over their sites. (Try Google instead of making stuff up.)
The tired "taxes" stuff is worn out. The GOP has turned into the most fiscally irresponsible party we've seen in a long time.
Obama is what we need. He's smart, articulate, knowledgable, charismatic (yeah, ya need that to get people to listen and respond, ya'll) and seeks out views and people's perspectives instead of just convincing himself he's right because he said so - like all the other candidates. Refreshing and much needed.
Obama '08!

John W,
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
The Neocons will continue to dominate the Republican Party until, and only until, the Republican Party is out of power and members inside the party excise them.
Until that time comes, nuts like Bruce and Sherman will contine to Captain the good ship Republican Titanic.
GOBAMA IN 08!

John W,
All of the GOP candidates are going to try to sell you on them being the party of fiscal responsibility, that's part of their schtick, it's sort of like when they call themselves the "Party of Family Values", what a joke..
Since the W administration took over in 2000 with a complete Republican controled Congress our National debt went from 5 Trillion to 9.5 Trillion, this is a dept that took over 150 years to get to 5 Trillion in the first place and these guys nearly doubled it in 6 years.
...and these are the same guys who are trying to scare people away from Democrats by saying that they'll raise our taxes?....please!

In relevant part Lee P posted and said (above):
"Socialist hate Obama. They trash him all over their sites. (Try Google instead of making stuff up.)"
Lee P:
I will concede that some socialists may dislike Barak Obama. He is not, for example, a Marxist; in which case those who favor a revolutionary struggle of the proletariat against capitalists will find little use for him. However, that doesn’t exhaust the entire field of socialists or socialism.
Socialism is generally descriptive of any system of collectivism which subordinates individual rights to the collective good, and which is funded by a commonly owned pool of capital or from periodic wealth redistribution. When Barak Obama says that everyone in society is interdependent and responsible for the welfare of everyone else (like he did last night), and also says we must collectively pay for this interdependence out of the common fund of tax money accumulated from the property of individual citizens (which he has done numerous times) – he defines himself as a socialist, intentionally or unintentionally, entirely apart from any particular socialist organization. I might add, however, that the Democratic Party generally endorses his socialist views, as do such individual candidates like Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.
I might also point out that the Chicago DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) have endorsed Obama for political office in the past. I hear, however, that some DSA members now favor Hillary because of her collectivist vision of a future America.
I don’t make this stuff up.
Lee P then said:
“The tired "taxes" stuff is worn out. The GOP has turned into the most fiscally irresponsible party we've seen in a long time.”
You are right about Dubya’s mishandling of the budget. But don’t put all GOP-ers into the same pile. Many people in the GOP are steamed over Dubya’s shameless spending.
As for the taxes, I think anyone who promises not to raise taxes this time around is either a liar or a madman (or madwoman). The government must raise taxes because failing to do so will only make things worse. Dubya’s practice of deficit spending now means we must raise revenues to fund normal government spending as well as to retire the debt and pay down the interest. This wouldn’t have happened if we only funded our government through taxation. We would also do well to find a way to limit appropriations for plunder and impose accountability standards on government agencies.

John E,
No neo-con or Bush supporter (if there is any difference) will get my vote - period. Neo-cons are not "conservatives" in any valuable sense of the word.
As for our national debt, I blame both major parties for this debacle. Both parties are addicted to shameless spending. Deficit spending wouldn’t have occurred were it not for the cooperation of both Republicans and Democrats in sending all those shameless spending bills to the President’s desk. The President still carries much of the blame, however, because he could have vetoed a lot of it.
As a result of all this spending, taxes are going to have to go up regardless of who wins the White House. We can’t afford more deficit spending. Where I disagree with the Democrats, and people like John Edwards and Hillary Clinton in particular, is in the notion that we can substantially increase domestic spending and enlarge government while decreasing our accumulated debt. That simply won’t work without increasing taxes to an unbearable level. We not only need to increase taxes, we need austere restraint in future spending. We cannot remain beholding to our debtors one minute longer than necessary.

WHAT LIE IS BEING SPREAD IN THIS BLOG? THE FOLLOWING ARE FRIENDS AND ALL OF THEM HAVE ENDORSED OBAMA. AFL-CIO IS SET TO ENDORSE HIM.
Democratic Socialists of America
Communist Party of USA
Chicago DSA
New Party (in different names)
Progressive Alliance
Progressive Movement
ACLU
ACORN
CODEPINK
MOVEON
All radical labor unions
Black liberalisms (too radical in views)
and so on.
There are so many of them. Bill Clinton acknowledged them as the Far Left.
Common, guys. Tell us who you really are. Are not proud Socialists? When your youth chapters are doing the house to house, they are not abashed being socialists.
Why are you ashamed of your true color. WE ARE NOT IGNORANT. WE KNOW HOW EASILY YOU CHANGE YOUR POSITIONS TO BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE PEOPLE.
Barack is going centric just to get the votes. But his flip flops also show that HE CAN'T BE TRUSTED WITH HIS OWN WORDS. HE IS A LIAR.
Like you socialists, you lie about your identity. You should be proud instead, Harrington's Fusion Strategy has successfully invaded Democratic Party.
Congrats!
OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST!
