ROSTOCK, Germany -- At the Baltic Sea resort where some of the world's most influential leaders are meeting for three days, starting with a dinner at a manor house tonight, activists are calling for less talk and more action.

The White House's resistance to a "one-size fits-all'' approach to combatting global warming is only one of the stumbling blocks to the sort of consensus that a lot of activists would like to see come out of this year's summit of the Group of Eight industrial nations.

It has been two years since the G-8 met in Glenagles, Scotland, where the leaders committed their nations to doubling aid to Africa by 2010. The White House says the U.S. is "on track'' to meeting its commitment, and so is the United Kingdom -- where Prime Minister Tony Blair, spending his last year at the G-8 this year, was a prime mover on African aid.

How much attention will be paid during talks this week to making the rest of the nations "pony up'' on that commitment made two years ago?

Dan Sullivan, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for economic, energy and business affairs, reverted to diplomatic today when asked that question, saying with a knowing smile: "There has been discussion about the importance of the G-8 meeting those commitments.''

That Greenpeace banner is up now: "G-8 Stop Talking Act Now.'' With a little added advice for protesters here: "Keine Gewalt'' -- No Violence.

Yes, the dingiest of mankind, the Far Left, are protesting. Shouldn't they be protesting in places like Venezuala, Sudan, Somalia, Iran, China, Russia where true crimes against humanity and the all elements of the world are taking place 24/7???

What word describes the exact opposite of "in-depth?" Right. That word would best describe this article.

John D:

When the leaders that make up the G-8 conference meet in those countries, you'll see just as many protests occurring.

Yes, BC, the quintessential Loony Lefter, the guilty people are the leaders of the G-8, and not Chavez, Castro, or the folks who are committing genocide in Sudan and Somalia (and where 10 ships have been hijacked by Somali pirates since the beginning of the year). Yes, BC, the U.S. is the evil entity. Go back to sleep, BC.

Pat Buchanan, Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly are far left?

Anti-free trade exists at both ends of the spectrum in some countries ... US, UK and Switzerland. In Canada and Australia, it's all-left. I haven't yet come across a place where anti-free trade is all-right (South Korea, maybe, but I've only been there once and just briefly).

Right wing anti-free trade is nationalist, unwilling to trade off sovreignty for individual freedom and private enterprise. Very anti-libertarian.

I have to agree. This is a pretty lame article. Hey Trib, you are part of the problem by not in-depthly covering the G-8 conference. What happened to watch-dog journalism? Too expensive?

Wow, there are that many anti-capitalists in Germany, one of the main industrial powers of the world?

That rocks.

An example of the Loony Left:

Peace, for your information, capitalism hass proven over and over again to be THE single best form of economics.

Oh and more information for you, these "anti-capitalists" come from all over, not just in Germany. And, how exactly did these "anti-capitalists" get there? By means of things largely created by capitalist -- planes, cars, trains, buses.

Sounds like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, John D, for you to get so whiny and attack me personally as your reply to my post.
