by Frank James
Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign picked "You and I" by Celine Dion as its new campaign song after a contest in which the presidential candidate invited the public to vote on what her new official tune should be.
Of course, Dion hails from Canada, which will probably lead many to accuse Clinton of outsourcing her campaign theme song. Also, it doesn't have much of a dance beat so it's going to be hard to jam to the song at rallies.
Clinton introduces the choice in a video featuring former President Bill Clinton with a vignette from a character actor who will be recognizable to fans of The Sopranos.
If she wanted a jamming song titled "You and I" there was always the Rick James tune. (See James's lyrics here.) Of course that would have led to other criticisms.
Anyway, here are the lyrics to Dion's "You and I:"
High above the mountains, far across the sea
I can hear your voice calling out to me
Brighter than the sun and darker than the night
I can see your love shining like a light
And on and on this earth spins like a carousel
If I could travel across the world
The secrets I would tell
Chorus:
You and I
Were meant to fly
Higher than the clouds
We'll sail across the sky
So come with me
And you will feel
That we're soaring
That we're floating up so high
Cause you and I were meant to fly
Sailing like a bird high on the wings of love
Take me higher than all the stars above
I'm burning, yearning
Gently turning round and round
I'm always rising up I never
Want to come back down
Chorus x2
You and I were meant to fly

A great choice if the Dem convention was being held next to the Belaggio fountain in Vegas. Blech.

"You and I were meant to fly"
I have to go hork.
My vote was for Led Zep's Whole Lotta Love.

My God, thank you for completing this important cog in the election wheel. It is the difficult, morally trying issues such as this that define a candidate. Now that she has her song, she can focus on the little things like the war, economy, etc. Opps, I'm sorry, picking a song is about as compicated Mrs. Clinton can get.

Wow, I can feel the upswelling of support now! Ooops, sorry, it's actually upchucking I hear.

Dion's theme from The Titanic might be more appropriate.
Posted by: S. Sherman | June 19, 2007 12:25 PM
I don't know if I can support someone with such awful musical taste.

What? "You and I were meant to be flies"? What is this? Evolution theory?
...Oh, "You and I were meant to fly." Nevermind.

Let me say that I will be voting for Mrs. Clinton in the primaries and in the general election. That said, this song choice calls her zeitgeist instincts into questions. Is she deliberately trying to alienate all men and half of young voters? Celine Dion? It's not as if there weren't female singers among the nominees that don't irritate in KT Tunstall and Tina Turner. Oh, well, just a campaign song, I guess?

I think Clinton picked this song because she wanted to find someone with less sex appeal than herself.
Posted by: kevin | June 19, 2007 1:41 PM
I've been very impressed with Hillary's performance in the debates so far, she knows her stuff so well that she'll win in a laugher if she ever gets to debate one of the Republican robots.
"Killer Queen" by Queen should have been her 08 theme song.
Posted by: John E | June 19, 2007 1:41 PM
I'd have thought the sound track from the original JAWS movie would be better for Hillary. That sound of impending doom fits with my image of Hillary as president.
Posted by: Lynn | June 19, 2007 2:00 PM
Wow, like I really needed another reason to NOT vote for Hillary.
I think S. Sherman is right: "Dion's theme from The Titanic might be more appropriate."
I also think Becks "Loser" would be good for her.
Maybe Meredith Brooks "B*%#*" might be more appropriate.
Or, if she was thinking of what she intends to do to us, the common American citizen, she should have gone with Nine Inch Nails "I want to %## $& like an @%*&%#@."

Don't know that I really care for the song as a campaign song. Like the story says, there really isn't a beat to it. However, I have heard a remix of the song in a club and it did sound good that way. How do i send an mp3 file to Hillary? She really needs the remix!

Figures John E (whatever happened to Obama in 08 and Gore in 08, now you'fre back to Hillary??) would be on board with this fiasco. Perhaps the theme song from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would be better, for Hillary and John E! Or Fatal Attraction?
Posted by: John D | June 19, 2007 3:01 PM
First, Who gives a rat's --- about her campaign song..'
Second if she most have one I'd go with nisleib's suggestion
I also think Becks "Loser" would be good for her.

I prefer "It's all coming back to me". Well, if not for her campaign song, it will fit perfectly into her impeachment hearings.
Posted by: JoAnne | June 19, 2007 4:06 PM
It's a song - who cares.
But "Evil Woman" by ELO would have been better.
Posted by: Terry | June 19, 2007 4:22 PM
Witchy Woman by The Eagles.
Cold as Ice by Foreigner
There are a host of songs that fit Hillary. Or for her and Billy, isn't there some rap song called "Pimp me up"???

I love Fleetwood Mac, one of my all time favorite groups. Yet, even after all this time, I get nauseaus every time I hear "Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow" , and the sickening vision of Hillary's fixed and vacuous smile, her arm around Bubba. She is nothing more than a cyborg, her mission in this life - complete and utter power over all of mankind. It's been that way since since her childhood in Oak Park. Fortunately, she will never be elcted president, and at least the Clintons will not have had the opportunity to ruin another good Fleetwood Mac song.
Posted by: JoAnne | June 19, 2007 4:48 PM
Terry,
BULLSEYE!! The only one that might be better is Elton JOhn's "The *^%$@ is Back".

Beanie boy, good comeback on the song after that monstrous gaffe the other day about gay people.
Posted by: Raving Loon | June 19, 2007 4:56 PM
Did anyone actually click the video? That was some funny stuff. Her people are really on point on this one. I HATE Celine Dion, and could care less about theme songs, especially so early in the game. I gotta give her a 10 on the video though, it was funny, relevant and in tune with current pop culture . All the things her "theme" song isn't.

Perfect: a hallmark greeting card singer and a hallmark greeting card song for a hallmark greeting card candidate...nothing bold, nothing original, nothing ventured...and about as inauthentic as posibble.
Posted by: John N | June 19, 2007 5:24 PM
How about that classic old Polka, played at Polish weddings, "I don't want her, you can have her, she's too fat for me"? It's got a good beat, is fun to dance to, and seems to be a good fit for the candidate.

For a self-described "Hillary supporter," that's an odd selection.
Hillary has enough troubles fighting off the image that she's too rough to be president. AS if what we want in this age of terror is someone with "soft edges."
Posted by: Bud McFarlin | June 20, 2007 7:50 AM
Did you notice on the video that Hillary tells Bubba.."I
ve ordered for the table"?
That's just the way us normal Americans order food for ourselves and wives.
With all the liberals crapping on President Bush for EVERYTHING EVERYTIME...now it's payback!!!
Ahhhhh...I'm starting to feel better !!!!

What gaffe about gay people?

Someone should tell Hillary's people that this is possibly the worst choice of campaign songs. It only appeals to women 52-56 and it is sung by a Canadian who is the poster child for lame.

Interesting that she spoofed the Sopranos, she has always seemed so high and mighty about violence on TV and video games. So she picks a show with a lot of violence to do a spoof commercial of. Not to mention, they used the n word quite a bit on there as well. I can remember her being up in arms for Imus' harmless comments, since everyone else was. I guess since Sopranos was accepted and popular thats ok. What a hypocrite. She stinks and I dont like her

Wasn't there claims that Steve Perry [formerly] of Journey had to sign off on The Sopranos using 'Don't Stop Believin'? He perportedly only did so after being told of the ending just days before it was aired.
It begs the question did he also sign off on Hilary's use of the song too in a political promotion?
Posted by: Peter | June 20, 2007 2:52 PM
This is the creepiest of videos I've ever seen. Maybe the Bill and Hillary campaign will benefit from it, but I think not. Maybe the two of them can sing the song in a duet on American Idol.
Posted by: GW | June 20, 2007 3:03 PM
Does any one else find it interesting that a candidate for the President of the United States of America chose a campaign song sung by a Canadian?
Posted by: Shane | June 20, 2007 7:58 PM
Aaron, I stand corrected. I still hate the b****!!!
Posted by: JoAnne | June 20, 2007 9:57 PM
How about, "Stuck in the Middle With You"?? "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you......
Posted by: JoAnne | June 20, 2007 10:02 PM
Shane, Not really. Why? Because she salivates and wraps her socialist arms around the thought of a North American Union.
Posted by: Becca | June 20, 2007 11:28 PM
First, the song is not important. The video is a funny spoof--that's all. Second, there is nothing wrong with aiming to be president your whole life. It's more than most people are willing to do for their beliefs. Forget about her image--voters should listen to what the candidates are saying for once. She's bright and would do a lot of good for this country. Vote for a woman for once!!
Posted by: Gabby | June 21, 2007 12:49 PM
Yes Shane, a song sung gasp by a Canadian..it's all part of our master plan up here in Canada to take over the United States.......
Our beer is already better, our women hotter, our comedians funnier, now what's left for us to conquer? The White House.
Hope you like back bacon eh.
Muahahahahaha

I can't understand why anyone would vote for this criminal, she has always been about money and always will.
If this woman wins I'll be visiting you Nataliya to see just how hot the women are in Cananananada

Typical American comments. You were asked to vote, and the fact of the matter is you chose this song. So blame yourself. If you hate Celine Dion so much, you should have known better not to vote for that song. But since you Americans blame everything on everybody else but your sorry selves, I'm actually happy this song won. HAHAHAHA A canadian!LMFAO!
Just like you are complaining about Bush, you were asked to vote too in 2004 and YOU chose to elect him. In part you decided he would come back to screw your country some more! Celine rocks.
