The Republican National Committee is hitting Sen. Barack Obama this morning for his backtracking from his long-held support for a controversial plan to promote the use of coal as an alternative fuel to power motor vehicles.
The attack, sent in an e-mail to reporters and other interested parties, suggests Obama made the change to "pander" to MoveOn.org and environmentalists, despite his traditional support of the significant coal industry in his home state of Illinois.
The attention was triggered by a story about Obama's switch in today's Los Angeles Times.

Comments
From the LA Times:
"With pressure mounting on Democratic presidential candidates to adopt hard-line positions on curbing global warming, Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday backtracked from his long-held support for a controversial plan to promote the use of coal as an alternative fuel to power motor vehicles."
This is the real story, not the fact that the RNC pointed it out. If the writers at The Swamp were actual reporters rather than Obama publicists, they would have made Obama's flip-flop on coal the story.

Why is the Trib spouting RNC bromides? This isn't a story, it's a press release. It used to be that newspapers shied away from printing press releases.

Every Senator supports the industries of their state. Looking forward to an alternative is what Barack does best and makes him so attractive to voters.

From real clear politics, the latest presidential polls show that Obama is trailing by double digits despite the best efforts of "Swamp" reporters to jump start his campaign.
The RCP average of the latest 7 polls has Clinton 34%, Obama 23%, Edwards 16%.
On the GOP side (the side the Tribune Tower wing of "Obama for President" isn't interested in) Giuliani is at 26%, Thompson and McCain 16%, and Romney 10%.

This is another example of how disingenuous and desperate Republicans are.
Republicans had no problem dishing out corporate welfare in the form of government subsidies to the coal industry to promote economically inefficient, carbon belching coal-to-liquid
technology , particularly after they were intensely lobbied this winter and spring by coal producers.
Republicans abandoned some of their core principles - free markets, self sufficiency - as soon as the lobbyists appeared at their doors.
Now that's pandering.

Another fine example of how scared the Republicans are of Obama and the Democrats.
I thought they said that they had 08 all but sewn up? Bruce said so himself.
GOBAMA IN 08!

Gee what a shock. The pro Obama swamp has absolutely no mention of the fact that the Sun Times uncovered a letter that Obama wrote on behalf of Tony Rezkos co. in order to secure a loan for Rezko on a CHicago property on which he purchased for $1. THis is the way it is done in IL and that is the exact reason why NO MEMBER OF THE CHICAGO MACHINE IS FIT TO SERVE ANY NATIONAL OFFICE. Meet the new boss same as the old boss.

Folks, don't you know the Chicago Tribune and the Barack Obama campaign office are one and the same? From the time the LIBune torpedoed Jack Ryan and his "sex bombshell" that he wanted to have sex with his wife, the Tribune has been in Obama's hip pocket, or into something with Obama!

Very good point S. Sherman. The LA Times (which I believe is a Tribune affiliate if I'm not mistaken) published the article, not Republicans as far as I can tell.

You repubs should listen to yourselves. If Romney changes his position on abortion he's had an epiphany. It couldn't be that he's pandering to the RR republican base.
But Obama changes his position on coal use, so he's a "Pander Bear"? This really is the politics of desperation.

dt, I am not supporting Romney, largely because of the flip flopping. That's why Romney is only around 10 to 14 percent in the Republican polls.

The point of this, as I have said many times before, is that Sen. Obama has been portrayed constantly by his campaign and much of the press as being inherently better, more saintly, somehow, than any other politician in the world today. In fact, we have been told for the last three years by many that he is, in fact, not even a politician after all, but rather the last great hope for our nation. So, my question is: Why should such fictional notions be allowed to stand when there is so much evidence to the contrary?
