Rudy likens his leadership role to Reagan's: The Swamp

Increasingly, Republican presidential frontrunner Rudolph Giuliani is delivering an implicit but crucial message: He has better leadership skills than President George W. Bush.

At a Flag Day rally in Wilmington, Del., Thursday, Giuliani said he was concerned that public opinion polls show nearly three-quarters of Americans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

Without specifically naming Bush, the former New York City mayor and author of a book titled "Leadership" blamed the poll results on Bush's failure of leadership.

"What we're lacking," Giuliani said, "is strong, aggressive, bold leadership like we had with Ronald Reagan."

His stark message was clear: Bush isn't Reagan.

Thursday's comment follows Giuliani's not-so-subtle putdown of Bush in response to a reporter's question Tuesday about why he thought he could succeed with school vouchers when Bush had failed.

"That's what leadership is about," he said. "Leadership is about doing things that in the past other people weren't able to do."

That message was clear: Bush isn't Giuliani.

It's a delicate matter for a presidential candidate to criticize a sitting president of his own party -- even when the president plummets in the polls.

So Thursday Giuliani walked a fine line by also appearing to stand by Bush while claiming Reagan as his mentor.

"I have tremendous admiration for President Bush," he said, noting he backed Bush in the first GOP presidential candidates' debate in May as others bashed him.

"I think President Bush made the single biggest decision of his presidency correctly. He put us on offense against terrorism," Giuliani said.

"But as far as the things that developed my ideas and thinking," he said, "it was Ronald Reagan."

Reagan, he said, recalling his two years in the Reagan administration, was a "very big influence on me."

That message also was clear: Giuliani is like Reagan.

An aide denied Giuliani was criticizing Bush, saying he "always makes a point to praise the president for his leadership and his decision to take America on the offense in the terrorists' war on us."

But Giuliani and his aide had nothing to say about Bush's leadership on Iraq, Hurricane Katrina or many other issues.

If the hallmark of leadership is being able to convince gullible people that you are more than what your really are, then Rudy is a great leader in the mold of Ronny. As a matter of fact our most esteemed and reverent George the First also convinced the gullible herd that he too was in the mold of Ronny. Have we gone full circle with the I'm like Ronny thing? In the words of Pontius Pilate "I knew Ronny. He was a friend of mine, and Rudy, baby, you are a Ronny - slick, protector of the privileged."

As the article points out, Giuliani does not want to compare himself to Bush II. This underscores that alot of Republicans were not happy with the last 6 and a half years. I know alot of Republicans who voted for Reagan and have an extreme dislike for the current President. The alliance between the Suburban Republicans and Rural Republicans is fraying.

"That's what leadership is about," he said. "Leadership is about doing things that in the past other people weren't able to do."

Yeah, like end the 3 day a week workday at 3 pm. Chop some wood, get a photo op with the Iron Lady, write some poems to Nancy so see won't get jealous, and sell arms illegally to the wrong people. Sounds like a real mentor, Rudy.

Right now Rudy is by far the best candidate. He has the best record to run on by far. I could see myslef voting for him should he come out of the GOP primary. Hillary would be my 2nd choice. The only thing that Rudy lacks is military experience. As a former Marine it is hard to bypass that fact. Rudy is the only true moderate in this entire race. He lead the most liberal city in the world as a Republican and was constantly attacked by the press in NY yet the people loved him and think he is the best mayor in NYC history. RUDY 08!!!!!!

Ah, the usual nonsense from Kenny Bunkport and GW. I just can't wait to see John E and Doogie Zook bring up Rudy in women's clothing.

Folks, Reagan was perhaps the best president this country had since Teddy Roosevelt. The fact that the Left hates him to this day is one additional reason for Reagan's greatness.

little Johnny,I believe Newt Gingrich said it best.

He call the Booshi admin and you dysfunctional!

"Reagan was perhaps the best president this country had since Teddy Roosevelt."

Ah HA HA HA HA HO HO HO HA HA HA HA...Whew! That one's a keeper!

Why don't the crybaby Republicans just dig up the body of Ol' Ronbo and run "Zombie Reagan" for President?

The guy was a phony when he was Prez and his legend built up by the loser Republicans is even more phony.

Oh yes. We need strong, aggressive, bold leadership, willing to do things no one has done before because the Bush Administration has so far given us weak, passive, peaceful, timid leadership, willing to care what people want, the constitution says, that there are limits to executive privilege, or care about history. Ahhumm. The past two terms were nothing but STRONG, AGGRESSIVE, BOLD, (lets add FORCEFUL, I KNOW WHATS BEST I DON'T CARE ABOUT MY RATINGS) acts motivated by a pea brain with one monolithic agenda surrounded by a cabinet working with the catch-all-everything-stems-from-and folds-into-terrorism umbrella. I'll pass.

And he's flip flopping already. I represent such and such a leadership, but not Bush's. But, I supported Bush's leadership even though he doesn't meet my leadership "standards."

That is really a good one. Even better that loony John Demented's usual RNC babbling.

Let's see, this is the great ronnie ray-gun who gave us Iran-Contra.

In the Iran-Contra Affair, several administration staffers were convicted of crimes ranging from lying to Congress to conspiracy to defraud the U.S.

Elliott Abrams agreed to cooperate with investigators and in return was allowed to plead guilty

National Security Advisor Robert C. McFarlane, pled guilty

Alan D. Fiers was the Chief of the Central Intelligence Agency's Central American Task Force. He pled guilty

Richard R. Miller - Partner with Oliver North in IBC, an Office of Public Diplomacy front group, convicted of conspiracy to defraud the United States

Richard Secord was indicted on nine felony counts of lying to Congress and pleaded guilty to a felony charge of lying to Congress

John Poindexter, Reagan's national security advisor, was found guilty of five criminal counts including lying to Congress, conspiracy and obstruction of justice

Oliver North was indicted on sixteen charges in the Iran/Contra affair and found guilty of three

Then came ronnie's HUD scandal.

The HUD controversy involved administration staffers granting federal funding to constituents, and defrauding the US government out of money intended for low income housing

Who can forget ray-gun's triumphant Savings and Loan deregulation.

largest political and financial scandal in U.S. history: The Savings and Loan crisis. The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around USD$150 billion, about $125 billion of which was consequently and directly subsidized by the U.S. government, which contributed to the large budget deficits of the early 1990s.

And ronnie sure did himself proud with the environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency Scandal arose when it was discovered that the administration was releasing Superfund grants for cleaning up local toxic waste sites to enhance the election prospects of local officials aligned with the Republican Party.

Yep, old ronnie was sure one of the best repugnicans in history.

225 different people in the Ronald Reagan administration quit, wer fired, were arrested, indicted, or convicted of either breaking the law or violating the Ethics Code

I believe some other pres may have modeled himself after ray-gun, booshie-booshie

Of course Giuliani is like Reragan - both cheated on then divorced their first wives to marry their mistresses.

"Republican Family Values!"

Vinny,

I hate to break it to you, but most NYers do not support Rudy. Guess they remember the pre-9/11 days when he was a tyrannical egomaniac with serious personality flaws (ask his estranged son and daughter). As for post 9/11, many think it's sick that he's built his surging career on fear and the lost lives of the World Trade Center. Now that first responders are dying of lung-related diseases, many are questioning what Rudy knew and when he knew it when the GOP-run EPA whitewashed the air quality at ground zero.

My Lord, what is the conservative love affair with Reagan all about? At what point does Mitt Romney just go for it and hump a life size cardboard cut out of the man? What exactly did Reagan accomplish that was so monumental to conservatives, other than get elected twice and not leave with 29% approval ratings? Bill H left out the arming of Saddam from his Reagan accomplishments. Remember the 25 year old picture of Rumsfeld shaking his hand -- Hey Saddammy, you're doing a heckuva job! I'd like John D to let us know exactly why Reagan was the greatest president since TR, and fyi, he didn't magically end the Cold War on his own, so don't even try it.

Oh, you Loony Clueless Lefties, Reagan accomplishments include:
1. Brought back pride in the country.
2. Began the strongest economic run in the nation's history.
3. Cut taxes.
4. Strengthened the military.
5. Defeated communism.
6. Yes, he won the Cold War and Gorbachev himself notes Reagan's success on that front.
7. Helped free millions of Eastern Europeans and former Soviet satellite states.
8. Signed actual arms reduction treaties with the Soviets, which largely became successful because he walked away from Gorbachev in Iceland.
9. Social Security reform.
10. Brought honor and dignity back into the White House after Nixon and Carter, who truly was this nation's worst president and worst ex-president. That honor remained in the White House until the Sexual Deviant Willie entered the place.

Need more, perpetually clueless lefties?

John D,

The legend that Reagan single-handedly brought down communism is baloney.

On the domestic front, supply side, aka trickle down, aka voodoo economics didn't work then and doesn't work now. Ask the bastard's father, David Stockman, who admits that no one in the Reagan administration knew what was going on in the economy.
