Attorney General Alberto Gonzales called a press conference this afternoon to hail the indictments of three Salvadorans for racketeering in connection with the U.S. activities of the violent MS-13 street gang.

But Gonzales fielded as many questions about the U.S. attorneys firing flap, now in its fifth month, as he did about the indictments.

Gonzales took 11 questions, five about MS-13 and related matters, five about the U.S. attorneys and one about Scooter Libby's sentencing.

For the record, he had no comment about the Libby sentencing and little new to say about:

 - former Deputy Attorney General James Comey's account of then-White House counsel Gonzales' visit to the hospital bed of former Attorney General John Ashcroft to try to get him to re-authorize the government's warrantless surveillance program.

- former Gonzales aide Monica Goodling's testimony that Gonzales reviewed the sequence of events in the firings with her at a time it was increasingly likely that she would be a witness in the investigation.

- Congressional resolutions of no-confidence now pending on the Hill. "That'll be up to Congress to decide how they want to spend their time working on," Gonzales said. "I'm spending my time focused on what's important to the American people, which is ensuring our country's safe from terrorism, ensuring that our neighborhoods are safe from things like gangs, ensuring that our kids are safe from pedophiles, and ensuring the public trust by prosecuting public corruption."

Gee, I can't decide who's more pathetic - Chimpy McFlightsuit, or Abu, the human shield providing cover to Chimpy and Karl Rove. I guess if you're anywhere in the food chain of this administration, you've got to be willing to take a bullet for your boss(es) - witness Abu (for Chimpy and Rove), and Scooter (for President [oops, I mean Vice President] Cheney) . . . .

The pace of dung drops on Gonzales head has slowed down for now. However, it can be picked up again on any slow day. there is plenty of ammunition ready to use. Immigration has all the attention now.
