If anyone is getting that Yogi Berra sense of the action on immigration reform being “deja vu all over again,” it’s probably because what Americans have witnessed the Senate and White House go through in recent weeks follows the pattern of what happened last year.
Here are some Chicago Tribune headlines from last year’s effort ill-fated effort to get legislation passed. We could have reused the same headlines this year.
Maybe instead of resembling a giant wedding cake, the Capitol really ought to be in the shape of a very large hamster wheel.

Okay Smart Guy,
Tell us what you would do to enforce our laws? Non-enforcement is no longer an option because the American people demand enforcement. The government failed to enforce the Simpson-Rodino act of 1986, and that failure encouraged more illegal immigration. Unless we now have enforcement of our current laws and/or of any law passed as a result of the current proposals, we will again be doing nothing but inviting more illegal immigration. This is what the American public believes.
Most Americans don't trust Congress to do the right thing when it comes to Immigration reform PRECISELY because of the enforcement failure. So, you may as well face the political reality that this bill is going to die a quick but painful death in the House of Representatives without some strong, practical enforcement mechanism.
So, let's say you no longer have the luxury to play passive politician and simply hurl criticism. How then would you proceed?

John W-
The wall will be a failure. Attempting to end a smuggling situation by interdicting supply is usually a failure. It dioesn't matter if we're talking about smuggling drugs, alcohol or people, as long as there is a demand, the smugglers will find a way to get the product in.
Cutting demand is the only solution to the problem. But we know the Republicans will never go for a solution that involves going after their business buddies. So they build a useless wall.

John W,
First off "smart guy" I'd start by telling you that you don't need to copy down other peoples posts when you respond to them (we can read, bozo).
Secondly, I would have the current crop of criminal Republicans in the Whitehouse and Congress rounded up and deported to a South American rain forest where they can study global warming first hand for the rest of their miserable lives.
Have a nice weekend "W".

Tony:
I never suggested that a wall, alone, or even a wall with other measures would do the trick. I asked my question because what is often heard is only criticism of current plans without any further, constructive suggestions for alternative measures.
I think you have a good start on the supply and demand issue. I think people who hire illegal aliens should be severely punished. I think people who repeatedly hire illegals should go to jail, and chronic offenders should also face property forfeiture. Even then, such measures aren't enough.
We also need to think outside the box a little. Let's try to do something with, or to, Mexico to solve the problem - if possible. We can no longer play silent victim to the policies of the Mexican government. They have to be held accountable for encouraging people to violate our borders. Perhaps some remedy in the shape of punishments and rewards for Mexico, as need be, would help gain their assistance.
In any event, the equation for solving the problem can't rest entirely on our side of the border as long as things are going the way they are down there. Their mucked up system, which deprives their own citizens of a livelihood, is surely one of the main reasons we have such a willing supply of cheap labors desperate to come here.
And, yes, we also need a stepped up effort at enforcement - even if it doesn't mean building walls, fences, trenches or mine fields. We cannot favor illegal immigrants over the legal ones. We have to return to some sense of fairness to those who come here legally.

Tony,
But we know the Republicans will never go for a solution that involves going after their business buddies.
Why is it that, whenever the Feds raid a business looking for immigration violations, it is the DEMOCRATS who squawk, not the Republicans.

John E,
I new I couldn't count on you for a straight answer because you don't try to think for yourself. All you ever do is spew the party line and criticize everyone else.
BTW - I copy portions of people's posts so everyone knows what I am responding to. It doesn't always happen that my reply immediately follows the post to which I am responding. So, instead of making people dig through all other prior posts, I give them the subject matter. I'm trying to be helpful, which is more than I can say for you this time around.
Second, we need to send the current crop of criminal Democrats to accompany the current crop of criminal Republicans. Neither of them work in our best interests any more. A pox on both their houses and their earmarks too.
Have a nice weekend "E."

John E blames the Republicans for illegal immigration and their business friends. Then, why oh why Johnny E is the Dumbocrapic party solidly behind illegal immigration? Harry Reid, Hillary, Barack, Schumer, Feinstein, Boxer, Dodd, Kerry, Kennedy, etc., etc. are all for open borders, illegal immigration galore. In fact, Sen. Shady Land Deals Reid calls illegal immigrants, "Undocumented Americans."
But then reality and your world never have been one and the same. Just stick to the basement John E., you and the rest of mankind are better off that way!

Perhaps because in most of those cases it is only the worker that is signifcantly punished, not the employer?

Why is everyone afraid of a wall? The border is supposed to be crossed at regular policed places. These places would still be there. Everyone would have the same legal access as before. The only people bothered by a wall would be those making unauthorized crossings. Why worry about smugglers and illegals having a problem. A wall will work if policed. I suppose you have noticed that Israel has stopped ninety percent of bombings with their wall.

A thought-provoking and legitimate point made by C Perry regarding a border wall. It seems C Perry is NOT a member of the Loony Left! Hence, C Perry will get attacked, just like Leo T and John W do, even though they took and take both sides to the cleaners on occasion.

John D. I am indeed a member and a proud member of what you describe as the looney left. I am "yellow dog" Democrat old enough to remember that Democrats brought electricity to our farm. I just think that the wall is a phoney issue. Our problem is that we must keep the illegals coming or they will overthrow the failed Mexican Governnment. We fear the result.
Posted by: c. perry | June 16, 2007 11:24 AM
I must respectfully disagree with c perry on one point.
We absolutely need the Mexicans to change their government. It is the corrupt, inefficient, and lawless government at local and national levels that makes the lives of its citizens difficult, savages foreigners and exploits the United States and its people. That government will never change its ways as long as the Mexican people let it; and they will continue to tolerate it as long as there is an emigration safety valve.

Frank James,
I read the "headlines" from last year. Respectfully, it would have helped to stay current.
Why,
Because for "all" of those blaming the Republicans, and the Bi-partisian illegal alien bill, wait for it now (everyone)
The bill can be passed by the Senate without any help from the Republicans because Congress is CONTROLLED by who- "the Democrats".
