Vice President Dick Cheney, who wears a heart defibrillator following four heart attacks, will undergo minor surgery on Saturday to replace a device in need of a new battery.
“During the vice president’s annual physical examination in June, testing of his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator indicated that the device’s battery has reached the level where elective replacement of the device is recommended,” said spokeswoman Megan McGinn, Doctors must replace the entire device to replace the battery, she said, and that will be done at George Washington University Hospital.
The defibrillator was implanted in June 2001 to shock his heart if he suffers an irregular heartbeat. Cheney, 66, has suffered four heart attacks and has undergone quadruple bypass surgery, two artery-clearing angioplasties and the operation to implant the defibrillator.

OH NO!
Now Cheney will have to turn over control of the Federal Gvmnt. to Boy George!?

A quote by Jonathan Karl, Senior national security correspondent for ABC in his review of the book Cheney in today's WSJ:
".. a prominent foreign-policy expert in Washington who has also known Dick Cheney for years told me--seriously--that he thought the change could be chemical, that, somehow, when Mr. Cheney had his pacemaker installed in June 2001, it triggered a reaction that affected his brain and drained him of common sense."

Some many jokes, so little time...
Darth Cheney headed to the Death Star for a tuneup...wait, he actually has a heart?...ect,ect...

Chainsaw Dick's body has been dead for at least twenty years now, the Repubs must be keeping his brain on life support at some "undisclosed location".

Will Dick Cheney be handing over the presidency to George W Bush while undergoing surgery?

Cheney has a heart?
Posted by: Kevin Quail | July 27, 2007 5:58 PM
Does this mean that the Cheney Administration will have to invoke the 25th Amendment again so Vice President Bush can assume the role of President while Darth gets his Energizers changed?:

God Speed back to Health Mr. Cheney.
I'm not a child so it's easy for me to be human and wish well to any person(s)in the world.
He has the look of someone who is getting ready to take advantage of the best medical care that his money and the taxpayers pocket can buy. Doesn't appear to be a Tricare or Tricore related expense either but it's covered. Only to put his "VETO" ink on the rubber stamp that will express the New GOP Assestation towards the Children's Healthcare Bill that comes before the Senate soon. It's too much money, and it takes away from Homeland Security and the foresaken fence we so hope to have by 10/08.
The GOP Stamp of approval and one of "Executive Privilege."
As we're all aware that any extra monies or "YOU" as person that may impede reconstruction of Iraq (120,000 contractors and that and that 4 billion dollars that just fell off the truck that no one knows where it went will be doomed to that on (July 17, 2007) Supreme Dictator/Decider/Commander Guy a.d. 2001. Has now proclaimed that he has the "Executive Privilege" above life in America as we know it and take all your possessions as he orders through the "Secretary" then through "Secretary of Treasurer" All Yo MONEY and yo kids and yo dog, and yo house, and yo car, and yo ipod, and yo new IPhone.
God Speed Sir.

The point is, the most powerful man in the world has a serious heart condition. That's newsworthy, no?
As far as the derogatory comments...if the shoe fits. There's a reason Darth is the most unpopular V.P. in recent history:

The point is, we have news, commentary and color here in the Swamp. The VP going to the hospital is news, albeit relatively small news, three paragraphs. Just like the president's medical exam last week, and the results of it. News. That's the point. Get it?

I'd rather have V.P. Dick Cheney, difibrillator and all, watching our backs than John ($1200.00 Haircut, effeminate)Edwards or for that matter Al (global warming)Gore.
GOD Bless You Mr. Cheney!

If Robert Hindes, et al. had knowledge of Dick Cheney's historical record
re: cardiac events, surgical procedures,
ongoing treatment...they
would be shocked at the
threadbare public information available.
Cheney's Medical Records
ALWAYS have been closed
to journalists, others.
His private GWU Medical Center physician team
provide very little specifics. Any press briefings are strictly
PR-arranged & presented.
Reporters cannot even obtain Cheney's Cholesterol,
Homocysteine, and/or Cardio CRP results!!!
S-E-C-R-E-C-Y no secret.

Cheney is rejecting the heart that Abraham Lincoln intended for the Republican Party.

Somehow I keep thinking that this has been a remake of the movie "Dave". They replaced Cheney with Don Rickles.

Posted by: mark silva | July 27, 2007 7:11 PM
Mr Silva,
Well of course it's news, and you're right in pointing out that it's very small news indeed. But if I may speak for Robert Hindes, it seems as tho you've posted it here in "the Swamp" only so that the peanut gallery can can spout the same unoriginal jokes we've been reading for months.
Because there's little opportunity for thoughtful commentary inherent in this item... although Roger Morris (paragraph 3) managed to find it... a tip of the hat to him.
If there is such a thing as divine justice, then I would guess that a terrible fate awaits Dick Cheney. But until that happens, I for one will not gloat about his, or anybody's, health problems.
Those who do surrender any claim to the moral high ground.

Imagine....Printing a piece about a medical procedure on the Vice President. What vile liberal bias news. "Because there's little opportunity for thoughtful commentary inherent in this item"... That makes it not news worthy?
Do you fear the free press more or less than terrorists?
Posted by: bill r. | July 28, 2007 10:16 AM
bill r,
I didn't say it's not newsworthy. I agreed with Mr Silva that it is.
I just wondered about his motive for posting it here, particularly. But I should grant him the benefit of the doubt about that; after all, he let me speak my piece.
Anyway bill r, wouldn't you agree that there is something disturbing about people mocking any human being's health problem -- regardless of who it is? Or are you OK with that?
ABE,
You raise a good point. Bravo! Good post. And this guarded secrecy certainly lends credence to the notion of Cheney as the Shadow President.
Posted by: [INSERT CLEVER POST NAME HERE] | July 28, 2007 11:16 AM
And in Bruces' neverending quest for unbiased news, he will ask: Will you cover this when he gets "out" of the hospital?
Posted by: bill r. | July 28, 2007 12:34 PM
Clever...I agree 100%. I have seen plenty of hate on "both" sides when stories like this appear. I just don't believe that justice is served by questioning the messenger.
Freedom of speech can be a terrible thing when in the hands of those that don't deserve it.
Posted by: bill r. | July 28, 2007 12:56 PM
bill r,
I take your point.
Mark Silva,
I apologize.

GO AWAY BLOG MOM!

I thought a defibrilater and a pacemaker were entirely different things and yet they are used interchangeably by the press. What's wrong with this picture?
Posted by: dorothy Petrovich | July 28, 2007 4:21 PM
Having been a heart patient, as millions of others like me will agree, the making of inane, childish comments about Mr. Cheney's heart reflects only on the immaturity and lack of sense of those making those comments. Criticize a politician's decisions and policies, but have at least a modicum of common decency when it comes to health.
Posted by: Shields | July 28, 2007 10:40 PM
Perhaps some of the commentators making jokes about heart surgery would like to visit the heart treatment wing at one of the local hospitals where a friend of mine lies in a coma from a failing heart.
Think of all the laughs they will get there.
Posted by: Addison | July 29, 2007 8:17 AM
Addison, when Tony Snow's cancer recurred, the Dingbat Left partied like no tomorrow. When there was a Taliban attempt on Cheney, the Dingbat Left partied, but would have partied more if they actually were successful. When the tires of Air Force One blew out in Indonesia, again the Dingbat Left was full of glee, but that glee was tempered because Bush wasn't killed. One of the Dingbat Left even wrote, "too bad it wasn't in mid-air."
So, making jokes about Cheney and his heart is not out of the ordinary for the Loony Left.

Little Johnny D' GrabSomeBench,
I could care less about the health of a mass-murderer like Darth.
Posted by: John E | July 29, 2007 3:09 PM
I doubt the new, improved deFibrulator is going to stop the lies of this criminal. Heart, what heart? One organ that is for sure man-made on this Dick.
Posted by: Rick/Sneads Ferry, NC | July 29, 2007 4:42 PM
Throw Cheney to the wolves. Smarmy Cheney could care less about ordinary law abiding U.S. citizens. He is a criminal.
Posted by: Doug R. | July 30, 2007 9:03 AM
Ah, the maniacal rantings from the Loony Left. Really, rather than death to Cheney, it would do you guys and the rest of mankind some good, if you folks would just put yourselves out of your misrery!
