The Swamp

by David Lightman of the Hartford Courant

Connecticut Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman today said that "the Iranian government has by its actions declared war on us," after a top U. S. military spokesman said Tehran's senior officials were aware of efforts to encourage violence against Americans in Iraq.

As a result, said the senator, "The United States government has a responsibility to use all instruments at its disposal to stop these terrorist attacks against our soldiers and allies in Iraq, including keeping open the possibility of using military force against the terrorist infrastructure inside Iran."

And, he said, withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq at this time "will give Iranians exactly what they want most," an "epic victory" for forces of terrorism.

He stopped short of advocating a military strike, but said that "while I sincerely hope that diplomacy alone can convince the Iranian government to stop these attacks, our diplomatic efforts are only likely to succeed if backed by a credible threat of force."

Lieberman also hoped the latest news about Iran would help quash calls in Congress to withdraw U. S. troops.

"Iran's purpose in sponsoring these attacks against our soldiers is clear," he said. "The Iranian government wants to push the United States out of Iraq.

"For Congress to mandate a retreat from Iraq," he said, "will give the Iranians exactly what they want most. A retreat would not only represent a catastrophic defeat for the United States, but an epic victory for Iran, Hezbollah and the forces of Islamist terrorism."

Lieberman's comments came after Brigadier Gen. Kevin Bergner said today that Iran's Qods Force was involved in a January attack in Kerbala. Gunmen posing as Americans found their way into a government compound and killed five people, including a U.S. soldier.

According to wire services, Shi'ite Iran denies involvement in violence in Iraq, and blames the U.S.-led war on Iraq for the problems.

But Bergner said otherwise, telling a press conference that "Our intelligence reveals that senior leadership in Iran is aware of this activity. We also understand that senior Iraqi leaders have expressed their concerns to the Iranian government about the activities," Reuters reported.

To Lieberman, this news was further evidence that the U.S. should get tougher on Iran.

"These revelations should be a wake-up call to the United States about the threat posed by the Islamic Republic of Iran," he said, "as well as a reminder why Iraq is, in fact, the central front of the global war on terror."

He said Iran's "sponsorship of terrorism in Iraq fits into a larger, dangerous pattern of behavior we see across the Middle East today."

Lieberman cited events in Lebanon, Palestine and Afghanistan. "Despite a mounting economic crisis in its own country and growing international isolation," he said, "the regime in Tehran is sacrificing the blood and treasure of the Iranian people to fund terrorism against its neighbors."

Pay no attention to rightwing goon LIEberman.

He hates all things Arab and he has no intention of serving for the good of the USA, he's all about serving for his own personal bigoted beliefs.

What's the end game senator?

Think it through.

Poor Holy Joe: does anyone really care what he thinks?

Ah, the anti-Semetic loony left lead by Chief Loon John E., and his buddy Robin, er Doogie Zook, rears its ugly head.

Yo, Johnny E., please explain how Lieberman is a right wing goon, OK? Other than the War on Terror and its offshoot Iraq, please tell me ONE issue, Lieberman is right-wing about? And even then how is he "right wing" about the war?
And how is Lieberman is bigot? Is it because he understands the threat from radical Islam? And Johnny E., please tell us what has been in the news the past few days regarding radical Islam. You too, for that matter, Doogie. And Doogie, what is the end game? Tell us how you would handle radical Islam, Ok?

at the risk of playing the common sense game.. why wouldn't Iran want to influence the Iraq war??? Why is this a debate?

Joe must go !!!!!!

Oh I forgot- then this war could not be called a bumper sticker by Mr. Edwards.. and dang it, it actually might require whoever "wins" the presidency to act on the threat with more that rhetoric..

What to do now? say the Dems - do I stick to non-binding resolutions and sticking it to small business with a minimum wage hike, or defend the country ..

Yet another politician who requires "stalinesque" political re-education....................................................

Umm, to all our Republican friends, and Senator Lieberman, who are so anxious for a war with Iran, I have a question-

Where are the troops going to come from?

Don't tell me it will just be an air war. If we start bombing Iran, do you honestly believe they will not become far more active on the ground in Iraq. Iraq, where we are already overstretched?

Again, Where will the troops come from?

Did Lieberman have anything to say about Bush commuting Libby's sentence.

Lieberman is a Jew and he's doing Israel's bidding. That's understandable. But if he's going to support the president, he needs to know the devil he's dancing with.

And how is Lieberman is bigot?

"an epic victory for Iran, Hezbollah and the forces of Islamist terrorism."

Well john Demented, when joe lumps together "Iran, Hezbollah and the forces of Islamist Terrorism" he might as well get a "bigot" tattoo.

Geez, maybe you should get out of Streamwood once in a while and see how the world really works. Oh, I forgot, you bush men are too afraid of the terrorists behind every tree.

Lieberman also hoped the latest news about Iran would help quash calls in Congress to withdraw U. S. troops.

Joe has lost it. Troops will draw down because the military is broken. The leaders on the ground don't even know what the long term mission is. Way to go GW. Another fine mess you've got us in. Impeach Bush and Cheney.

Yo, Bill H (and another one of you leftist bastards is fixated on where I live???), is Hezbollah a terrorist organization? Does Iran not support terrorism and has for nearly 30 years? Are there not forces of Islamic terrorism in the world?
Bill H., your stupidity is pathetic. On the heels of attempts to kill hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people in England by Islamic terrorist kooks, you question Islamic terrorism??
But keep it up, weird leftist loons. The more you losers talk the better the chances the GOP has of winning, and winning big, in 2008!!

Another fine "debate" John D.

Lieberman's devotion is to Israel and he will follow any policy that will strengthen and protect his Zionist brethren. Think about this, Had Al Gore been elected President, Lieberman would have been his Vice-President. It was a blessing for Gore that he did not become president because knowing how Israel and its loyalists work, the Zionist probably would have eliminated Gore and guess who would have become President? Israel's loyalist son.

(plese refer to http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/index.html
Also, all the architects and Neocons of the Iraq war are not just Jews, but Zionist who do the bidding of Israel - Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Libby, Perle, William Kristol, Douglas Feith, Elliot Abrams.

Richard Perle is a chief architect of the "creative destruction" agenda to reshape the Middle East, starting with the invasion of Iraq. He outlined parts of this agenda in a key 1996 report for Israel's right-wing Likud Party called "A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm."

Lieberman is just another mouthpiece for Israel. Instead of Israeli soldiers dying in Iraq, our soldiers are being killed to further "their" realm.

John D raises valid points, even if he is a bit overheated about it.

Bill H and John E tell us all, please where is the bigotry?

- John E, you've tossed this accusation at Lieberman more than once... please back it up. Cite a specific example of Lieberman saying or acting like a bigot or just shut up.

- Bill H, John D didn't "lump" together" Iran, Hezbollah and the forces of Islamist Terrorism, they lumped themselves together. (Have you ever read a newspaper?) So how is his pointing this fact out, bigotry?

- John D, calm down, please.

INSERT CLEVER POST NAME HERE aka LEO T,

I make it a point not to respond to know-nothing lying Republitards like yourself who are so afraid of dissenting opinion that they don't even have the spine to sign their own name to their post's.

thetruth,

Actually it would have been great if fomer President Al Gore had been awarded the Presidents job that he won in 2000.

Joe Lieberman would be in an undisclosed location right about now instead of spreading rightwing fear tactics and pandering to Israel.

Mr Clever Name, I understand where you come from. You may be new to this Swamp, otherwise you would know that being calm to the Loony Left is like trying to bail buckets of water out of the Titanic. Most of these people cannot be reasoned with, are incapable of any thought other than "Bush lied, people died," "impeach Chimpy," "shoot Darth Cheney in the face," blah, blah.
But thanks for the support in the question department. It shows you are smart and can think for yourself!

icpnh, Read the post, I didn't say john Delirious is a bigot (though he is) I said joe is a bigot.

How can you pinheads think the entire nation of Iran is composed of Islamic terrorists? That is extremely bigoted. Why would you think countries in the middle east are any more homogenous than our own? Do we all follow the bush men's kill 'em to save 'em credo?

Of course there are elements in Iran that are involved in the war in Iraq. They share a huge border. Do you think everyone in the US would stand idly by while another country occupied Mexico or Canada?

I am probably wasting my time with you hannitard repugnicans but I want our country to be the world leader in peace, education, prosperity and freedom. Not the most warring nation on earth and that is what we are today.

You want to believe we are still the "good guys" we used to be but (unlike you) I do travel around the world, often, and I can guarantee you that we aren't. The US is universally viewed as the biggest obstacle to world peace on our planet, not joe's "Islamist Terrorists".

Bill H., as a typical Loony Lefter I understand reading and comprehension are qualities beyond your grasp. Never said all Iranians are terrorists. The nation is a terrorist leader and that means its government support terrorism, aids and abets terrorism, and is a threat to the world.
Also, the U.S. is a leader in peace, education, prospertiy and freedom. Heck, we freed the Iraqis from the Hussein regime and the Afghans from the Taliban. We worked to free Central American countries from the grip of communism. We fought to keep the South Vietnamese free from Communist Vietnam.
Bill H., it is the Left who does not want freedom nor prosperity, nor education for that matter. Anyone who is prosperous the Left wants to take their money away. IN regard to education the Loony Left is in favor of failing schools and not bringing people up to better education because more times than not an uneducated person is wasy fodder for the Loony Left.
And as far who is bigoted, there are no greater bigots in the world than the Loony Left, who believe no minority has the capability to progress without the false helping hand of the Loony Left.

Iran has been fueling he insurgency and supplying weapons to the insurgents for some time now. Why should anyone be surprised by that?? Tell me something don't know loser LIEberman.
The U.S. forces, by occupying Iraq, are also responsible for the insurgency and all the violence that continues to this day.
No military solution here. Not remotely possible.
I think we should let our Supreme Court appointed President tell the American people what the exit strategy is. Moron Bush needs to provide us with specific and detailed plans on an exit strategy, including a withdrawal date or timetable. He is the one that lied to and mislead the American people about the diaster Iraq has become. He is responsible for all of the dead, blown up and injured U.S. personnel this misadventure has produced. He is also responsible for the death and destruction that the Iraqi's has lived through and suffered.

They are Joe? How would any of us know since your buddy, Scooter, destroyed the CIA intel team in charge of Iran?

I mean, Valerie Plame was assigned to Iran, as was the rest of her team. And when her cover was blown, her team and her contacts were compromised. Are you saying that we've already rebuilt 25+ years worth of intelligence gathering infrastructure with regards to Iran? That we have enough access to know whats really going on inside Iran? Or is Holy Joe's bloodlust just getting to him again?

Everyone calm down. There is not going to be a war with Iran. There will not even be a war in Iraq past next June or at least we will not be part of it. There is an election November, 2008. The troops must be started home early next summer or there will be a Gongressional disaster for the Republicans. Those guys can count and know that there will be 5,000 dead soldiers before election day. Joe will run with the rest or he will be asked to cross the aisle when the Dem.s have a huge majority without him. They just might do that, whatever he does.
