Madeleine Albright says Clinton gave best answer: The Swamp

Seeking to attack Sen. Barack Obama’s greatest perceived weaknesses – lack of experience – Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign today used a former secretary of state to subtly question an answer he gave in Monday night’s debate.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a member of Bill Clinton’s administration, did not specifically criticize Obama’s response to a question about meeting, without preconditions, with leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea during his first year in office.

But she did strongly suggest that her candidate gave a much better answer.

“She gave a very sophisticated answer, which showed her understanding of the whole process,” Albright said on a conference call this morning with reporters. “If you look back at real breakthroughs in diplomatic history, what you basically find is that in order to understand where the situation is, to clear the underbrush away, it is necessary to have lower level people make the initial contact.”

When asked the question last night, Obama said he would talk directly to the leaders of those rogue nations.

"I would," he said. "The notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them, which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration, is ridiculous."

Obama went on to remind viewers of the CNN/YouTube debate that other presidents have done the same.

“Ronald Reagan and Democratic presidents like JFK constantly spoke to Soviet Union at a time when Ronald Reagan called them an evil empire,” he said. “And the reason is because they understood that we may not trust them and they may pose an extraordinary danger to this country, but we had the obligation to find areas where we can potentially move forward.”

Clinton said she would not offer to talk so quickly, offering an approach with greater nuance.

"I will promise a very vigorous diplomatic effort because I think it is not that you promise a meeting at that high a level before you know what the intentions are," she said. "I don't want to be used for propaganda purposes. I don't want to make a situation even worse."

Obama’s campaign is spinning hard itself, issuing a memo to “interested parties” today that declares “Obama Wins Debate and Commander in Chief Test.”

The memo seeks to clarify Obama’s response to the question of direct talks between world leaders, as well as suggest that Clinton has reversed her position on the question. It cites this Clinton quote from April: “I think it is a terrible mistake for our president to say he will not talk with bad people.”

But Albright said she did not hear anything that would suggest a change in Clinton’s thinking about how to deal with nations hostile to the United States.

“I would never have gotten out of the debate last night that there was any change in position,” she said. “She has made very clear, over months now, that it is important to engage with people that you disagree with...What she said in the debate is that, basically, it would not be a first act.”

That was fantastic show of courage from the Democratic presidential hopefuls. To give the American people a chance to ask a point blank question takes courage. You can't hide behind the television prompter, you actually have to be a bit more candid than shy. I thought Mr. Obama showed conviction, but no "true grit." I thought Edwards was a little weak, as he attacked a woman in a woman-to-woman arena wherein his wife would do better. That's a little egotistical but yet loving for his spouse. I too would make the same conviction but not face-to-face in a political arena.
Senator Joe Biden, I consider the "Shock Jock" of the Democratic party, as he can throw out reality and put things back into some perspective, even if he flip flops on everything. Bill Richardson, didn't step up to plate and address Immigration. He has the ability to address a nation of people who need leadership not only where they came from, but Mexican Americans. We all know, Attorney General Gonzales has sold their souls to the devil with signing off on the last immigration bill that just fell through (Thank someone). Senator Kucinich, well he speaks for himself, looked a little weak, due to food poisoining, and appeared to show fear as though he got some GOP bread, or a GOP phone call that can cause a brain tumors or electrical impulses that effect the liver only.

Most of all it was very satisfying to see them take to the stage and face America as it is in the living rooms of America.

I don't think we will see the GOP do the same as their are not too many Ronald Reagan movies out their that they can feed off of his legacy. As it seems on CSPAN/ PBS the GOP is under "Executive Privilege" and "Executive GAG Order" when speaking in a "Shoot Straight" manner to anyone, any American, any foreign government or even in to Congress their, his or hers own peers. Not even John McCain, who walks the walk of a "Straight Shooter." WE SHALL SEE.

Bill Clinton never started unnecessary wars (Iraq) when he was fighting the "war on terror" in fact one of Clinton's assistant's told the W. administration right after W. "won" the election in 2000 that they needed to find and kill Bin-Laden.

This all resulted in Condi Rice getting a memo titled "OSAMA BIN-LADEN DETERMINED TO STRIKE IN AMERICA".....which they proceeded to ignore.

The seven dwarfs and no Snow White. Only the mean queen. And a whole lot of boredom going on. To think, this thing has 15 months to go. Mercy, Mercy!

last night's drinking game was take a shot every time
Barack says
"special interests."
drunk, very drunk....

Who cares what she thinks!!! She gets one vote like everyone else. Me thinks the Clinton's are spinning to hard if they think they really won!!!!

The Clinton campaign made an interesting choice when it trotted out Albright to criticize Obama, since Albright actually DID meet with Kim Jong-Il. Albright gave him a basketball signed by Michael Jordan, and got to view Jong's famed collection of pornography.

Do you see the irony in the Clinton campaign sending out a person who met with Kim Jong Il, to criticize Barack Obama for saying he would go meet with Kim Jong Il?

Ok, jeez, once again I have to stick up for Barack Obama?!?!?!?
Anyway, I find it a hoot that Madeline Aldim, the same woman who kicked up her heels with Kim Jong Il and was tricked by the demented little dictator, is questioning Obama's answer? Give me a break!
And, since the combat-legged woman, who says she can leg press 900 pounds, worked for the Slickmeister and Queen B, why wouldn't she be used as a tool by the Queen B?
Clearly the Clinton people are getting spooked by Barack. It ought to be interesting as these two go at it! Be careful, Barack, remember what happened to Vince Foster?!?!?

Why is this a surprise that Obama is lacking? He's always been a puffed up lightweight with no track record on anything other than wearing expensive suits and flashing clever smirks.

Bruce, do you see the irony that you appear to be one of the Children Left Behind? From the orginal post:
“She gave a very sophisticated answer, which showed her understanding of the whole process,” Albright said on a conference call this morning with reporters. “If you look back at real breakthroughs in diplomatic history, what you basically find is that in order to understand where the situation is, to clear the underbrush away, it is necessary to have lower level people make the initial contact.”

When asked the question last night, Obama said he would talk directly to the leaders of those rogue nations.

In the example Albright sites, its a lower level person (lower than the President) who she says should make the first contact. Which is what she did with Jong II. Not the President himself, like Obama is saying he would do. She did not say that no one should talk to rogue leaders. And she cites history as giving plenty of examples of this approach working. I would the Cuban missile crisis would be one.

I thought Barack had the better answer myself.

Soooo... someone from the entrenched political class that brought us this mess agrees with the candidate from the entrenched political class that brought us this mess on the issue of how to handle this mess?

I'm shocked.... shocked.

All the more reason to choose Obama over Clinton.

We need to change course, not choose the candidate that will just give us more of the same moronic, inconsistent, immoral, and undisciplined foreign policy (regardless of whether they've got an "R" or a "D" next to their name).

I'm sick of arming these third-world a$$holes while they're our "friends", just to have them punch us in the nose 5 years later, when they all the sudden become the "big bad guy", even though they've never really changed at all... just fell out of favor of our mouth-breathing politicians.

Use diplomacy. Don't arm them, then ignore them, then attack them. It's a stupid, vicious cycle.

Sometimes I wonder if Americans speak, hear, and understand the same language. Obama said he would speak directly to foreign leaders. Hillary/Bill said they would not because they would not want to be used for propaganda, but lower level people could clear the way. How is what Hillary/Bill said so sophisticated? Everybody with any sense knows and understands the process begins with low level officials. Direct talk does not mean that he would pick up the phone and call those leaders.

Mr. James, While you indicated that Amb. Albright worked for Pres. Clinton's administration, you failed to clearly illustrate her role in the current Hillary Clinton campaign (saying only that Hillary was "her candidate" ... it's more than that).

It might help explain why a former Ambassador to the UN is attacking a Democratic presidential candidate for saying the same thing Hillary said a few months ago....

I see little irony in Hillary trotting out Albright to criticize Barack for saying he would meet with Il when Albright herself had. Albright's example only underscores Hillary's point last night that she would not forgo dialogue altogether, but she would not be a dupe.
This example illustrates her thinking, with clarity. President Bill Clinton sent a high-level diplomat to meet with the guy and "test the waters" just has Hillary suggested she might. He did not lend the prestige of the presidency to the guy by meeting with him himself.

John D.,

Your regurgitation of Vince Foster's suicide is sick.

REA, ALL CAPS ARE NOT NECESSARY.
ALSO, PLEASE LEARN SOME ENGLISH, GRAMMAR, SPELLING, WRITING STYLE.

YOU ARE BASICALLY INOCOHERENT.

FINALLY, BUSH NOT MORON GUY, UGLY, BAD.

HILLARY: VERY UGLY AND BAD AND EVIL. SHE MAKES RUTH BUZZI LOOK LIKE PLAYBOY PLAYMATE (am I dating myself with Ruth Buzzi??)

Although Obama was criticised by so many people for not giving a sophisticated answer, I believe that he will not talk directly to the rogue countries without preparing of lessons. He is not that stupid as the cretic thought.

However, that's Politics. And experience is really important in undertake each task. I think Obama is a competitive VP candidate while Hillary as the major candidate. They two together will win the election.

Doug, there is much not settled about Vince Foster's alleged suicide. There are still many questions that have gone unanswered. Here are a few:
1. Forensic experts will tell you when someone shoots himself in the head, the gun goes flying and usually lands several feet from the body. The gun was still in Vince Foster's hand. Why?
2. Why did the White House bar investigators from entering his office until AFTER White House staff had a chance to pilfer items from his office?
3. Things were taken from Foster's office and withheld from investigators, why?
4. Many investigators in the scene said it appeared the body had been moved. Why would they say or believe that?

Vince Foster MAY have tragically taken his own life. But there are many unanswered questions, the least of which is why did he do it? Apparently he left nothing behind giving any indication as to why he did it. While that does happen, it's also not the norm.

But, hey, if your breed can make statements like 9/11 was an inside job and that Smirky and Satan Cheney planned it all out(which I have never seen you condemn by the way) then how are my questions -- as well as others -- unacceoptable and "sick"?
