One day after Sen. John McCain’s campaign revealed it was in deep financial trouble, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney announced that he’s raised $14 million in the second quarter of this year and loaned himself $6.5 million for a hefty total of $20.5 million.
More important, Romney has $12 million in cash on hand, $10 million more than McCain’s campaign reported. Altogether, Romney has raised $43.9 million this year, making him the leading money-raiser among all Republican candidates.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who raised $15 million in the first quarter, has not yet said how much money he took in during the second three months of this year.
Romney needs as much money as he can get, because he is burning through it at a fast clip. The Nielsen Company said Monday that Romney had placed more local TV ads than all the other presidential candidates combined, with 4,549 showings through June 10, mostly on local broadcast stations.
The ratings company said Romney had run his ads in seven markets, including the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
Those ads, however, have paid off: Romney has boosted his profile, and his poll numbers, in the early primary states.

$20 million may not get you a lot of varmints, but it does allow Mitt to look for varmints in more places.

Romney has placed more local TV adds than all other candidates combined? I never would have guessed. I can't recall seeing any of his adds. But maybe that's because I have already excluded him from serious consideration.

Mitt's the biggest flip-flopper since Aunt Jemima. We've just witnessed what a flip-flopper does once he's in the White House: whatever the hell he pleases.

Mitt Grizwald. You have to wonder about the priorities and competence of a man who would put a dog on top of a car for a 12 hour drive, and all the luggage required for the trip inside the car.
