The Swamp

by Leora Falk

Joe Moore, an alderman from Chicago, was rebuffed at the White House Gates earlier today as he tried to present President Bush with letters and referendums from towns, cities and states speaking out against the war in Iraq and asking that Bush bring the troops home now.

Voice over the intercom: Can I help you?”

Moore:
Yes My name is Joe Moore, I am a member of the Chicago City Council and I am here with some other elected officials and state legislators from across the nation and we had written a letter to president bush asking for a meeting, and we didn’t get a response so, we have copies of resolutions that our state legislators and city councils have passed regarding the war in Iraq, and I was wondering if there was someone from the President’s staff who we could deliver these resolutions to.

Voice:
Sir, please stand by.

He then stood by, telling press that local elected officials “have their finger on the pulse” of the American public, whose opposition to the war is growing, and posing for photographs with the resolutions. White House security asked people who were trying to leave the White House to use the next gate over so as not to let in the activists and local officials who were crowded at the gate . At one point, one of the group told a member of the press who was leaving to use the other gate, and people groaned, asking “whose side are you on?”

Then a police officer approached the gate.

Moore:
Hi how are you. I’m Joe Moore I’m am a member of city council. How are you doing?

Police
: I’m good.

Moore: And I’m here with a bunch of, dozens of local elected officials and state legislators from cities and states who have passed referendums or resolutions against the war in Iraq, and we would like to present those to either the President or a member of his staff. I have a folder containing some of those resolutions, and I was wondering if I could deliver them to someone in the White House.

Officer: I appreciate your concern the problem is it would be against protocol to accept them. What you can do is mail them. It goes through all the proper channels and will reach its destination.

Moore: So your indicating that there is no one right now in the President’s staff who is willing to accept the resolutions passed by local elected officials representing about 150 million Americans?

Police: this wouldn’t be the forum to do that.

Person in the front of crowd: Officer, what about the First Amendment right of petition, the first amendment is for people to petition [inaudible].

Officer:
yeah we’ve got security issues we can’t accept packages unless they are from a government courier

Moore: Well, I am a member of local government and I am acting as a courier for all these local government officials today. There is no envelope. It’s uh …no sealed envelope, just a folder with petitions and resolutions right inside.

Woman shouting in the crowd: The people are speaking!

Officer: We’re not going to be able to bring them inside

Moore: Well, I appreciate your time. I know you are just carrying out orders and delivering what other folks told you, but it is disappointing that the president or any member of the staff couldn’t meet with local elected officials

Officer: Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Moore: Thank you

Woman shouting: Take the resolutions!

Man shouting: Throw them over the fence!

He didn’t throw them over the fence but later presented them to Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) who looked like she was in a huge rush to be somewhere else, but promised to display them at the next Out of Iraq Congressional Caucus meeting.

"GOOD SHOT, WE THANK, I THANK YOU FOR YOUR VALID EFFORT IN REACHING OUT TO THIS PRESIDENT."

Your name is not Terry Schiavo and he doesn't need your vote. Maybe his GOP buddies, but not him. He needs you to just pick up the phone so he and AT&T can "LISTEN TO YOU TO SEE IF YOU ARE IMPOSING A THREAT TO HIS 'RECONCILIATION" OR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF IRAQ AND OR HIS EMBASSY THAT IS BEING JAMMED DOWN THEIR THROAT. No thats Germany owned VERIZION / T-MObile.

HE DOESN'T HAVE TIME TO DISCUSS HEALTHCARE. HE HAS ALREADY DECIDED, STATE FARM LOST TOO MUCH MONEY ON NOT BEING ABLE TO RESIGN ALL THOSE KATRINA VICTIMS THEY DIDN'T HONOR.
"Mr. VETO aka Mr. Decider has his ink out, even after hours.

WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR VALID EFFORT. HE DOESN'T EVEN ANSWER SUBPOENAS, WHY ON EARTH DID YOU THINK HE WOULD MEET WITH YOU. GO FIGURE.

Why doesn't the alderman worry about the "sectarian" (gang) violence in his own city.

The "man shouting" and "woman shouting" at this gate gave me another impression. Villagers gathering outside the palace gates with rake and hoe in hand shouting "off with his head" and "let's kill the beast." It's unfortunate they made it that far, but had trouble passing along the resolutions for security purposes.

Terry,

He's multi-tasking.

This man's ward has problems galore and he is either worrying about foi gras or running the nation's foreign policy. Perhaps he'd better read the job description for an alderman. Then he should take a tour of his streets and see the trash, the grafitti, the dirt, the potholes and cracked sidewalks, and after that, ask a few of his constituents how safe they feel.

...oh come on Joe...as much as I hate this stupid war, you must have something better to do than this...isn't there some chopped goose liver to be saved, or something...

Doug,

Some old saying about "he who lives in a glass house..."

I guess that smoking has been banned...

Yeah, god forbid Joe Moore has an opinion that transcends his ward. After all, the world ends at the boundaries of his ward. After that, there is nothing else. And I am SURE his constituents have nothing on their minds EXCEPT what is going on in their ward. Of course, based on Terry's logic, Terry needs to shut up about all things outside of his little world and stop worrying about what people think about president shotgun "I was wrong about the end of the insurgency" chainsaw and his little mouthpiece earboy. Terry thinks people need to worry only about what is happening in their neighborhood. So see ya' Terry, since we don't cover where ever you live that often.

Addison-

You live in the 49th? Seen all the trash, the grafitti (actually, it's graffiti), the dirt, the potholes and cracked sidewalks? How does a cracked sidewalk make a person feel unsafe? Or a pothole? Or any of the other stuff you mention? Lamer. I believe the job description for an alderman could be summed up as "to represent the constituents of its ward". If the majority of the ward think the illegal occupation of Iraq was a bad idea, he's doing exactly what he was elected to do.

Well, this may come as a surprise to some, but I do support Joe Moore in his foi gras ban. We don't need to inhumanely abuse the animals we eat.
Having said that, this little stunt of his was pathetic. But then what do you expect from a Chicago alderman?

Slumlords.
Drug dealing on Morse Ave. and pretty much everywhere.
Crumbling infrastructure.

These are the major three problems in Rogers Park. The streets are unsafe and the drug dealers deal openly. Yet our alderman is staging "look at me" events in Wash. DC. We always knew he was using his post here in Chicago to launch a national profile. When that day comes, reporters and the general public will have a field day about just how much he has neglected this ward. We have stories.

This is typical responses from a few nit-wits. The point of the matter is we are now living in a country that refuses to listen to the American people. I believe that we are given the right to petition the government under the Constitution and this administration refuses to abide by it. IMPEACHMENT IS THE ONLY ANSWER

Hello Assorted Leftists!

Say, instead of acting out of turn on international affairs and spouting the usual Che Guevara-type rhetoric, how about focusing on local issues FIRST? You know, 49th ward type stuff, such as trying to decrease gang violence and open air drug dealing in your ward, graffiti, jobs, and so forth? I realize that this wouldn't give the alderman and his freaky-left supporters the national exposure you crave. However, it does strike me as "democratic" to first focus on what matters most to your community!

Warmest Regards,

Alex

Alex Garcia,

You seem exceedingly angry.

That aside, don't you think it's bit of a stretch to compare a cold-blooded murderer like Che to an alderman exercising his 1st Ammendment rights?

Now that that the worm is starting to turn in Iraq, the "surge" is now starting from the far-left who are heavily invested in our defeat. These childish and self serving antics will now increase at a dizzying pace. Staged events, like Mr Moores' will now put the Defeatocrats' on notice that they are hoping and praying for failure. About the only thing it will accomplish is a splintering of their party and ensure another Republican Prez. Rudy will then paint them as not taking terrorism seriously, and tax raisers, which will surely queer this robust economy. After the 2008 elections, you will then hear their national anthem once again, "they stole the election from us". Their intense hatred for Mr. Bush will once again get in the way of clear and logical thinking, and it will be "Good Night Irene" once again for the Defeatocrats.

Hello Doug:

You seem to have an exceptional amount of free time on your hands! a quick scan of this blog and others seems to indicate that your life is somehow intertwined with "The Swamp".

Anyway, is Moore exercising his constititutional rights in taking a trip to Washington for a publicity stunt, or is he grand-standing for personal political gain, and appealing to the hammer and sickle waving fringe in the process?

Some have said that the most dangerous spot is between Joe Moore and a microphone or TV camera. Quite simply, promoting job creation and stemming crime in his ward do not offer him as much personal exposure as say, banning goose liver, fighting Wal-Mart, railing against involvement in the Middle East, or promoting gay rights.

Warmest Regards,

Alex

what a dork!

How does Moore think that it is ok to pass anything by hand through the white house fence? Can I walk up to the WH and expect them to take a package from me and pass it to the presidents staff? NO!

For those who are supporting this poser from the 1st amendment POV - he is not standing at the white house fence as a private citizen, he is standing there as - in his own words- a member of the government- so it is valid to challenge this goofbal to ask why are you wasting chicago/cook county taxpayer time for your excellent White House adventure? Get back to your Ward and do what you are paid to do- whatever that is... again, what a dork!

Thanks for trotting out Defeatocrat Don B. 70% of the country are Defeatocrats and "invested in our defeat"?? LOL Your jokes are hilarious! For your next comical post can you remind the Swamp about your belief that urban areas are dangerous because they are teeming with "inner city male Democrats" who will "rape, murder, and rob women"? The first time you said it I split my sides from laughing so much.

Hello Alex,

As a semi-retired, self-employed electrician I do indeed have free time with which to opine. Lucky you!

My only beef with you is you comparing Moore to Che.

And of the people beefing about Moore, how many of you live in Moore's ward? Regarding the gang problem. Until Moore gets his own police department and/or budget to build factories to employ people, just exactly what is he supposed to do about gangs?

Hey right Janet...the cities are very safe, not doubt that's why soooooo many people are rushing to move back. Let's see we average about 85 murders a day in the U.S., no doubt the bulk of them done by Republican suburbanites.. by the way did they catch that rapist in Wrigleyville yet ? You wouldn't be finding the truth hard to swallow now would you Janet ?

Just when you thought that there was no way there could be any more screwballs
on the Chicago city council than there have been, along comes Joe.

Malvina, Paulina and Lunt.

Funniest joke about Chicago I ever heard. The best part was it was a chick who told it to me.

Donny B,
All you have to do is come and take a look at he South Loop of Chicago. Plenty of high rise condos are being built. What looks like one criminal committing heinous acts is not going to make me cut and run to the suburbs like you. Crime can and does happen anywhere. Just ask the Police Chief of Delavan, WI. Or visit Aurora or Elgin. You can come out from under the covers, Donny B. You are more likely to lock your keys in the car in a major city than you are to be a victim of a violent crime.

Clueless Janet, yes there is much rebirth going on in the South Loop. I'll tell you what though, I dare you to move into the Austin neighborhood, OK?
But thanks for pointing out that crime exists in Elgin and Aurora (Democratic areas by the way). They are urban centers and there is crime. Sort of proves Don B's point, huh?
