Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) has opened a new line of attack on Att'y Gen. Alberto Gonzales – calling for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate whether Gonzales misled or committed perjury in testimony before Congress.
Schumer, who was the first to call for Gonzales to resign in March, clashed with Gonzales during his appearance before the Senate on Tuesday over his past testimony, which Schumer said other Bush administration officials and members of Congress had contradicted.
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), who also has raised the possibility of a special prosecutor in the congressional investigation of the firing of federal prosecutors, said today that it appears clear that the Bush administraiton is not going to appoint any special counsel.
“I think that much of what Sen. Schumer has done has been politically motivated,’’ Specter said at a press conference today.
In a letter seeking the special counsel, Schumer and three others senators level three charges of contradicted testimony by Gonzales -- charges that in themselves are somewhat complex.
They charge Gonzales misled Congress when he claimed there had been no serious internal Justice Department disagreement about the controversial warrantless wiretapping program but others testified there had been concerns raised; that the program questioned internally wasn’t the warrantless wiretapping program acknowledged by the president, when others said it was; and that he had not discussed the prosecutor firings with his staff that was involved when one of the staffers said he had.
Joining Schumer in the call were Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island.
Gonzales denied the charges on Tuesday.
White House spokesman Tony Snow this morning sought to come to the aid of the beleagured attorney general in his morning “gaggle” with reporters. “Unfortunately we get into areas that you cannot discuss openly. It’s a very complex issue. But the Attorney General was speaking consistently,” Snow told reporters.
But pressed by reporters about statements from other administration members contradicting Gonzales’ testimony, Snow sounded oddly similar to Gonzales on Tuesday: “It’s simply more complex than that, and I can't go into any more detail.”

Wow. The Democrats have are politically motivated here? I find Attorney General Gonzales actions to be politically motivated. Firing prosecutors who investigate Republicans or won't investigate Democrats. Or wire tapping American citizens. Or going over the head of the acting Attorney General to try to pressure a sedated post operative John Ashcroft to allow them to wire tap American citizens.
Attorney General Gonzales has forced the Senate to take up this position. It is evident that he has weakened the Justice Department and he claims that he has to remain in his job to fix it. Normally, a cabinet member would quit to spare the President from having to fire them. Gonzales won't quit and Bush won't fire him.
What would you have the Senate do under those circumstances?

Bill Mann:
What a silly question. They expect the Senate to do what it has done for the last six years: nothing. Of course, that was a Repulican Senate.
They are probably baffled as to why the Senate and House aren't lining up behind them and doing whatever they say. Isn't that the Senate's job? To back up Commander Cod Peice Guy?

Yea, Yea, Yea.
I do disagree with the Special Prosecutor. That gives Senator Spector a way out, and the ability for the "entire" Administration to now fall under the President's new "Executive Gag Order Privilege."
As I said you see Tony Snow, all man one day, then the next morning. "Its an ongoing Investigation and we do not discuss ongoing Investigations."
Senator Spector should be the most outraged as it was on his watch and pen through a backdoor latenight meeting outside the hospital, right after that sound "Underdog attempt" by Alberto to get Ashcrofts signature on the on going "Illegal wire taping" of American Citizens that King George stood in front of the American People and said "when you hear the word wire taping" It takes a court order. Hurry up Alberto, get that signature before the American people I just told that too finds out that we didn't really have the authority, get it and I will make you "Attorney General." He said Okay.
Too bad former Speaker of the House Denny Hastert wasn't so far up Mark Foleys black berry we might have been able to have some type of oversight then. Maybe some of the key elements in the Patriot Act that triggered the now DHS Supreme Power over all of us not been enacted.
Gonzales sold out Mexican Americans across the land by becoming Bush's legal thwart boy. Now we have laws that don't make sense or coincide with Constitutional Law. We have Karl Rove Law. Harriet Miers Law. Monica Goodling law. Sara Taylor Law. Regents University Law. Which I guess in this administration is the "Divine Right of all licensed attorneys in America."
Too bad he didn't have the "Immigration Nationalality Act" when he was just a little boy because he might have a clue.
Duh Duh Du Duh.
May his legacy be recorded as such.

I bet the right wingers attitudes toward Waco would have been vastly different if the Branch Dividians had been a Muslim fringe group that fired on federal agents rather than a Christian fringe group that fired on federal agents.

Specter is such a fraud. He talks about special prosecutors and congressional oversight, but he does absolutely nothing. Schumer isn't the only one who's words and actions are politically motivated. Specter is trying to get re-elected in a blue state by talking like a Gonzales critic while he carefully avoids taking any action that might offend GOP partisans.

AG Gonzales could quote that famous presidential canidate and simply state "I don't recall".

Chuckie Schumer is the biggest con man in Washington--he waxes on about everybody's sins if their Republicans. Schumer served as RNC Senate Chairman last year after John Kerry fired Joe Wilson for lying to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Schumer picked him up dusted him off and showed up with Wilson for a TV network barrage of cameras to accuse Bush of everything.Schumer is a narcissist and an opportunist he will never prove the AG did anything wrong-- all Schumer has is sleaze to build a false case he and our own Dickie Durbin are the most despicable members of Congress but don't forget Henry Waxman the ugliest man in America and John Conyers who won't respond to sexual harassment charges from office employees for these characters to impune Bush or Gonzales takes real chutzpah in Schumer's case --he is the most dangerous fraudulent man in the U.S. Senate. He is abrasive, mean and shrill in his constant jabs and attacks that are like the sound and the fury signifying nothing. Gonzales will whether the the storm and so will Bush after millions have been spent proving Jackasses can't govern. Jerry White, Springfield,IL

Although I commend the Dems for exercising their Constitutional right to investigate, we all know where this is going. Of course, Gonzales, is just one more greasy weasel from the Bush farm. Of course he perjured himself. He couldn't answer one question without stuttering and stumbling all over his excuses and lies. Gonzales won't resign, there will not be a special prosecutor, and this will go away. Even if the Dems are successful in charging the AG, it will be pointless. In the Bush administration, perjury is legal. Rove will ignore his subpoena and this nighmare will go on. THIS is the Democracy Bush wants to spread around the World? Most of these countries already HAVE a dictator. And to those of you who keep complaining that Congress should just legislate (meaning pass Bush's defense spending bills); Congress and the American People have a right to investigate the legality of OUR GOVERNMENT'S actions. The Patriot Act was a treasonous assault upon the American People. When the Dems take the White House you can believe the Patriot Act will be repealed.

More nonsensical rantings from "Jerry White from Springfield," who clearly sits in a rocking chair on his porch holding a shotgun in hand, demanding to keep those darned kids off his lawn.
"Schumer served as RNC Senate Chairman last year after John Kerry fired Joe Wilson for lying to the Senate Intelligence Committee."
What in the love of criminy are you talking about, Jerry White? You are either insane or senile or both.

While Gonzo plays the hapless, clueless conspirator in this administration's elaborate sting operation on the American people, you can't help but feel a speck, a Who-ville of sympathy for him, akin to that felt toward the predator when Chris Hansen steps out from behind the curtain and confronts him with his words and deeds and intentions: Cretinous he may be, but still within human skin.
But in both cases, that iota of sympathy is dwarfed and squashed by the bulk of the misdeeds, and you gather at the public hanging in a festive mood amidst the barkers selling their snake oil and rat-a-tat drummers keeping time for the brass band. Just one last question remains: Will he accept the hood, or will he see our smiles to the very end?
