The Senate vote on the Democrats' amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill which would have required a U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq, failed 52-47, after the all-night debate. The Democrats needed 60 votes. Republicans were able to hold together for the most part.
Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) the Senate Majority Leader, decried the fact that Republicans were requiring 60 votes and not a simple majority on the Levin-Reid Amendment.
Leader of the Senate Republicans, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kty) cited the line by Claude Raines who played Captain Renault in the film "Casablanca," the police official character who said he was "shocked, shocked" that gambling was occurring in Casablanca and told his underlings to "round up the usual suspects."
.
The point McConnell was making was that the Senate always requires 60 votes on controversial matters and since the Iraq war is certainly controversial, there certainly should be 60 vote majority.
Reid shot back: "This is not a movie we're debating. This is one of the most serious issues facing the U.S." He went on to say the reason the Republicans insisted on 60 on the defense bill's amendments because they knew a simple majority existed to pass the Levin bill and others.
Now the Democrats and Republicans are tied up in a procedural knot created when Reid took the defense bill from consideration and tried to move the Senate first to a Homeland Security bill, which McConnell objected to, then to an education bill, which Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) objected to.
Even the usually mild-mannered Specter was clearly riled up over the Democratic tactics, especially the all-night session that kept senators from getting much sleep last night. He essentially called it a huge "waste of time."
Needless to say this is not the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Democrats and Republicans

I don't understand, why is nobody calling this a fillibuster? This is exactly the same thing that happened four years ago with Bush's pyscho judges. At the time Republican's were threatening to use the "nuclear option" to get past the fillibuster and it was all the press could talk about. Now the press seems to be allergic to the very word fillibuster. Why is that? How much does the white house pay you?

The draft dodging, bug-eyed McConnell should gear up and hit the streets of Baghdad in support of the 'surge'. Let's see how patriotic this queer is. He's another tough talking Republican chickenhawk with absolutely zero military experience.
Iraq is a complete diaster with no end in sight. Military solution not possible. Puppet Iraqi government powerless and incompetent.

Why can't the Chicago Tribune call the Republican efforts to derail this legislation by it's true name? The Republicans stayed up all night FILIBUSTERING this bill to kill it. The Democrats did not pass the bill because the Republicans filibustered it.

So the Republicans are on record backing Commander Guy and his illegal occupation.
Got it.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV,) the Senate Majority Leader, decried the fact that Republicans were requiring 60 votes and not a simple majority on the Levin-Reid Amendment.
Hilarious!
Harry Reid, Dec. 14 2004 in the Washington Post
"If they, for whatever reason, decide to do this (propose a simple majority vote to defeat filibusters), it's not only wrong, they will rue the day they did it, because we will do whatever we can do to strike back," incoming Senate Democratic leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.) said last week. "I know procedures around here. And I know that there will still be Senate business conducted. But I will, for lack of a better word, screw things up."

It has been a pleasure watching these pro-war chickenhawk Republicans defend an already failed Iraq policy.
It's time for the wimpy Repubs who have actually spoken out against W.'s civil war in Iraq to put their votes where their mouths are.

Actually, both parties are in on the same huge play, a black comedy that features a lot of show boating and posturing and making sure nothing really gets done. What we need in this country is a strong third party that would clean house--or the present theater.

Harry Reid, took a stand and if we all did the same thing then maybe some action would be taken in regard to this war. With Al Quida on the rise, are we at risk??? ask yourself that question and then let your mind rest and consider our fighting men, they are closer to the problem then we are, are we jeopardizing their lives because Bush wants our boys to remain there and fight a losing war??? I stand with harry Reid, BRING OUR BOYS HOME!!!!!!!

It is amazing reading leftist postings on this blog.We are winning the war in Iraq with this surge.
The despicable stunt pulled by Reid and Durbin was to satisfy their kook base and to try to extort Republican votes for surrender.
The Democrats in the Senate and House are invested in defeat. They own defeat in Iraq. They say they want to fight AlQuaeda and AlQuaeda is fighting in Iraq so, we have to be in Iraq till we complete the security of Iraq and the region.
The driveby media showed the cots being hauled in the Senate. Barbara Boxer had a meltdown on CNN complaining that the GOP made them get 60 votes. Boxer is one of the many Dems trying to secure defeat for her own personal and political gain.
But, watch out Democrats the American people saw your stupid games complete with dog and pony shows led by the meister Dingy Harry Reid with his cohort in crime Dickie Durbin. By the way, Hillary sounded like anybodys worst ex-wife yelling about pulling out of Iraq.
Remeber Tom Daschle he pushed to keep the 60 votes now it doesn't please the Jackass party. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Funny, how just last Fall and Winter, the Queen B was saying pulling out of Iraq would not be a good thing to do. Now, she screetches it like she's yelling at Bill to take out the garbage.
At least Barack has been consistent.

It's fun to see the leftists calling Republicans "chicken hawks." Here's the dictionary definition of chicken hawk: "a hawk that preys or is believed to prey on chickens." Guess who the chickens are.
They all have the letter "D" after their names!

Doug R,
McConnell was not a draft dodger, he VOLUNTEERED for the military in 1967 but was given an honorable discharge for medical reasons soon after.

"Your whole play is If it's President Bush it's wrong?"
Well...has he ever been right about anything?
Posted by: Timmy Crook | July 18, 2007 2:35 PM
bobdog, are you insane?
We are losing this war because the chickenhawk liars that started it were not smart enough or brave enough to do it the right way. If we wanted to win this war there would be a draft, that way we wouldn't have to keep extending troop tours. But no, Bush doesn't really want to win it, not if the cost is a draft, which he fears instinctually because he (and most of his advisors) spent their youths hiding from the draft.
Nobody has helped our enemies more than Bush. This war in Iraq is EXACTLY what Bin Laden wanted. He couldn't have asked for a better recruiting tool. Of course Bush might have been told to start this stupid war by the Bin Laden family, the same family that bailed him out of several businesses Bush ran into the ground in his youth.
And if you think hanging on in Iraq just a little longer will turn Iraq into a wonderland maybe you should look at the history of the area. Look to see how the British faired when they occupied Iraq.
It was a fundamentally stupid war from the get go. I doubt it would have worked if we had the "several hundreds of thousands of troops" General Shinseki suggested but it certainly didn't work with the NeoCons ill conceived shock and awe strategy.
You Goopers are so naive and gullible... I pity you.
Do the world a favor, get out of the gene pool.

If we could start up the draft again and some of these toughtalking chickenhawk Republic Party members would start seeing some of their family members actually having to go over and fight in W.'s stupid civil war in Iraq....maybe....just maybe, we would actually hear them speak the truth about Iraq.
Posted by: John E | July 18, 2007 3:06 PM
To the Goopers who think we "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here."
No, the most recent NIE says exactly the opposite. Our fighting them over there is making it MORE likely that we will have to fight them over here.
Go read it. Then take and anti RTP (Republican Talking Point) pill, turn off fox news and try to grow a brain.

at the point in time commonly known as 9/11, the decison to invade iraq was treason-- pure AND simple-- the evil filth in the white house decided they had the excuse to grab the iraqi oil they were lusting over...
bush/cheney & co. is guilty of murdering each and every american soldier who has died in iraq-- if u are such an absolutely brain dead moron that u can't see that-- u are like a babe in the woods...
this has nothing to do with how big a putz and a prostitute reid and pelosi are... we all know they are bought and paid for by the same big shot corporate chieftans as the republicans...
i'll leave u with a thought... if u are going to the movies and MAKE A WRONG TURN, what do u do?, admit it, suffer some small dose of embarrasment, turn around and get to the movie on time; or do u drive all the way around the world because u feel in your heart that u can make it, eventually, one day?
u blood and soil types need to get a grip... u sound like a bunch of nazis from a recently bygone era...
defeat????? little crybaby whiny republican wimpy poozies... blame the dems for the defeat?? lol... u repugs own this own baby lock stock and two smoking barrels...
any defeat suffered in iraq, any loss of prestige, any damage done to the psyche of the military - WILL ALL be on the heads of the republican party, and this sick evil administration in particular...
so just admit the truth-- acknowledge that he liberals had it dead right from th start-- that the neo-Cons used u like pretty-boy's rear end in the pen...
the only thing worse than being a knuckle-dragging, right-wing pituitary retard who thinks its amusing that the president of the united states is a cowardly dry-drunk smirking monkey who likes to play with working people's children's lives-- is to not know u are...
frankly, I think we are headed to civil war... i don't know that the country can survive the cancer that you represent... the filth of your evil mind has already spread to far... we'll see...
this may be our last chance to put u back in a box where u belong...

Bobdog, what planet are you from? Your statements indicate that you have little or no familiarity with economics, world history, or the complex geopolitical situations at hand. I dislike liberals and conservatives. The world is too complex to be at either end of the spectrum.
The "war on terror" is a modern day fear tactic (similar to cold war) employed by the government/military-industrial complex designed to subvert the population in order to gain political, economic, and military control. Just look in a history book and replace the word "communist" with "terrorist". The communists didn't destroy us and neither will the terrorists.
The economy "sucks". Record trade deficits, plummeting dollar, and an astronomical level of spending that has us racking up record debts. What would happen if China called all of that debt Bobdog?! Bush has never been able to run a profitable business - why would he be able to run the largest economy on the planet?!?!

You know it's funny that you Loony Leftists keep talking about Republicans being chickenhawks when the fact is most of those in the military come from Republican homes, come from Christian families, come from Red states not Blue states. Most in the military are Republican not Democrat.
So, I guess that means the democrats are the true chickenhawks.

The all night session was a joke. Funny how soon the same party that thought filibustering was a great idea when they were in the minority, now see filibustering as a capital offense.
The dems point is mute. Even if they did pass it with simple majority, the POTUS would veto it and they wouldn't be able to overide the veto.
Stop wasting everyone's time with the drama of all night debates that you know will fail. Its all for show.
So much for all the change the Dems were promising last year when they were running for office. They turned out to be as incompetent at changing anything as they made their opponents out to be.

boobdog, u are an idiot or a liar or both...
try this on for size... iran had a democratically elected government in the 50's... women had the right to vote... mosaddeq was elected by a majority of the iranian people... when he decided to increase the royalties the foreign oil companies were paying to extract iranian oil the cia had him deposed... the protoNeoCons installed the murderous shah...
this is what led to the islamification of iran...
