The White House, casting doubt on the Justice Department's interest in pursuing any contempt charges against officials filed by a congressional judiciary committee, maintains that officials still are willing to answer questions -- just not giving the sworn, public testimony that members of Congress are seeking in an investigation of the firing of federal prosecutors.
"‘It seems now that we have a fishing expedition that is woefully short on fish,’’ said Tony Snow, the White House press secretary, maintaining that the administration has broken no laws and only exerted its own privileges in both the firings and relations with Congress.
The White House is casting serious doubt on the Justice Department’s willingness to pursue contempt charges against the White House -- while leaving that question, of course, to Justice, which, of course, is headed by Bush appointee and close friend Att'y Gen'l Alberto Gonzales, responsible for the firing of the federal prosecutors in question.
“It is important to note that the tradition in dealing with these maters, that for separation of powers reasons, it likely goes to the Justice Department,’’ said Snow, noting the Justice Department's reluctance in the past to take up such charges and citing Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy’s comments on the question of any alternative route to contempt proceedings against the Clinton administration in 1999.
In the high-tech world of the newly renovated White House press briefing room, the 45-inch flat screens flanking the podium were ready with the Democratic senator's old words.
“Holding the attorney general under contempt of Congress would require a trial on the Senate floor,’’ Leahy said at the time, said Snow, ready with a transcript of his own today at word of the contempt question. "In my view, such a spectacle would be an embarrassment to this institution.’’
Snow also said that the White House offer of having administration officials answer congressional questions behind closed doors – without a transcript or oath – stands, and that they would be obliged under such circumstances to tell the truth to Congress.
"We continue to offer a way of cooperation,’’ Snow said at his daily press briefing. “We continue to hold open the possibility of cooperation… It would be a lot more constructive for Congress to find a collaborative way to get all its questions answered.’’

Comments
That's the usual stance from these Republican knuckledraggers, continue to ignore it or call it a "political circus" when someone trys to call them out for blatantly breaking the laws of our land.

I hope they go with inherent contempt of Congress. I don't think Bush can pardon anyone that way.

It's obvious that Bush's partisan hacks have no intention to ever tell the truth. Why won't they testify? It can't be for security reasons. They have already proven that politics trumps everything.

Nabobs! How I do hate them!! Shoot them! Shoot them all!

Cheryl,
I'm with you on inherent contempt, but sad to say that presidential pardon is absolute.
Right, wrong or otherwise, stem to stern, sea to shining sea, any sitting president can pretty much do anything they want to do pardon wise, with the possible (untested)exception of pardoning themselves.

Zooky,
We should make the Commander Guy do it anyway.

Not to use Mr Snow's fishing analogy but....
The fish in question are bottomfeeders and the water they swim in is murky at best. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they're not there.

The buck stops nowhere. As is the case with frivilous lawsuits, this country no longer accepts blame. Simply defer and continue on with your daily life (morally ambiguous or not). Personal accountability is out the window.
Goodbye, American values.

perfect for DC "The Swamp"

Actually, there are a lot of fish in Congress. All of them are over three days old and you know what that means.

Congresswoman Snow:
People are not fish. The vote of a man or woman is not a piece of fish in the sea. "CAGING" is a crime as fishing is not.
Did you receive a personal GAG order before going on television Sunday? Did your GOP Daddy tell you to keep your mouth shut also or I will extend my "Executive Privilege Paper out on you and order your not to talk, to Anyone?
If your son was in the military and his vote was CAGED to keep you in office, I mean your GOP partner, you wouldn't have a problem with that either?
Well WE KNOW That. So can you save the rhetorical crap about fishing and call it for what it is.
Caging of fish, and you know 87,000 of them couldn't swim, but they knew how to get to the football stadium.
Now that the SCARED GOP, would like to "NOW" recognize "Some" of the constitution that the Decider guy aka Commander guy allows you to. Do you remember what part was okay and what part is still on hold for House/Senate debate as it is confusing to the Department of Justice all of sudden. If it was OJ they would have that email. What a Joke, we are big people here in America. Let the Lies about this come out,
let that 12 year old reboot those computers and download those emails instead of sending them to friends and then "Oh my God" Who turned off the servers in the night.
Let America heal itself with due dilligence, well Congressional dilligence at least.
Let the ASSESTATIONS come out Congresswoman and stop hiding behind whats left of the GOP Diaper wearing men. Now your telephone number is not going to show up, is it?

Snow's comment about the "fishing expedition" being "short on fish" only makes sense when you realize that Cheney's executive branch leads the (formerly independent) Justice Department. It is this very same Justice Department upon which Congress is required to rely in order to "fish" -when the Executive branch refuses to comply with Congress's subpoenae.
In Snow's analogy, he's not telling you that it is the Justice Department (as the enforcement branch of the federal government) that (for Congress at least) owns ALL of the fishing boats, ALL the gas, the GPS, the depth-finder, ALL of the bait, ALL of the rods and reels, ALL of the hooks, ALL of the line, ALL of the sinkers and bobbers, and are the ONLY fishing guides available. It's pretty hard to fish under such conditions . . . .

Love the fish analogy. After all, a fish always rots from the head down.

Buster,
Great post, but you left out the people that sell the licenses, and DNR enforcement. Fortunately, the customers have left the state - i.e. - the voters, so earboy and president shotgun only control "truth" for another year and a half.

Roger Morris, seek help. Also for your information, Tony Snow is not a congressMAN, but the White House press secretary.
Sheesh, are ALL of you Loony Lefters this ignorant?

This is a little off point, but it has been on my mind lately. The spokepersons for the Bush administration have become highly adept at spinning facts in order to make Bush et al. look good. My worry is - after spending their entire work days spinning, do they spin when they go home? Do they spin their spouses, children, extended families and friends? Do they get to the point where they are so acclimated to spinning that they can't recognize or articulate a true statement? While we all look at reality through our own unique prisms, Bushies have used advanced word play to bamboozle the American public. They should have used that energy and talent to accomplish some good instead.

Tony Snowjob twists, turns, and spins the truth each and everyday. If you watch his briefings, he is incapable of answering questions that are asked of him. He is probably uncertain about what the truth really is.
In a way I feel sorry for Snow. He is a sick man, riddled with cancer. It shows on him more each day. He should resign and spend his reamining time with his family.

Phyllis, let me clue you into something, Tony Snow goes home and actually makes the spin around!!!
