The Swamp

by Frank James

A quick guided tour of some of the morning's most important or interesting (or both) Washington-related stories.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was hospitalized overnight with tests finding no cause for concern after he experienced a seizure at his Maine summer home, causing him to fall and receive minor scrapes at a dock near his house.

President Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown strove to keep a unified front over Iraq and the fight against terrorism during the British leader's first visit as his nation's premier to the White House.

Federal agents raided the Alaska home of Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican in the Senate in history, as part of a corruption investigation involving a friend of the senator's and other Alaskan lawmaker who was convicted on bribery charges.

The Army has taken a new approach of assigning combat veterans to monitor the overall progress and advocate on behalf of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a response to the scandal surrounding outpatient care at the facility.

The first application to build a nuclear power plant in the U.S. in three decades has been filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Agency for a proposed plant in Maryland, a response to global-warming and energy concerns.

A little noticed and short provision slipped into the Senate energy bill would boost the expansion of the nuclear power industry with billions of dollars in federal loan guarantees.

The Bush Administration is anxious for Congress to approve a treaty that would spell out who has rights to oil and minerals in areas where Arctic ice has melted.

The House approved legislation to make it easier for workers to win lawsuits in pay disputes with employers, a move meant to override a Supreme Court decision which was seen as raising the bar on workers in such suits.

A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel kept the GlaxoSmithKline PLC medication Avandia on the market despite finding links to heart attacks.

I guess the bridge to nowhere actually leads to jail.

Ah, the summer of Republican discontent:

Hookers, booger sugar, and kick backs.

Bring on the dog days of summer.

MOSCOW — As global warming makes exploration of the Arctic sea floor possible for the first time, Russia has launched a massive expedition to help secure the region's vast resources.

In the next few days, two manned minisubs will be sent through a hole blasted in the polar ice to scour the ocean floor nearly three miles below. They will gather rock samples and plant a titanium capsule containing the Russian flag to symbolize Moscow's claim over 460,000 square miles of hitherto international territory — an area bigger than France and Germany combined in a region estimated to contain a quarter of the world's undiscovered oil and gas reserves.

The issue of who owns the North Pole, now administered by the International Seabed Authority, has long been regarded as academic since the entire region is locked in year-round impenetrable ice. But probably not for much longer."

The race for the North Pole??

While I don't think The Swamp follows the Trib's right leanings - I find it odd that there's no major story about the Stevens raid.

Nearly every other important paper is running their own story on the development.

From the leftwing blogger Wonkette, who's been cited several times in the "Swamp" (among others, Frank James used her as the source for a 10-10-06 article), comes this message of love and caring:

"Chief Justice John Roberts has died in his summer home in Maine. No, not really, but we know you have your fingers crossed."

These people are hate filled. And unbalanced. And followed by "Swamp" reporters.

So, Ted Stevens has been building the bridge to nowhere in his basement? Good use of taxpayer dollars there!

And, Russia is officially claiming the arctic sea floor? Does that mean we get the moon, Mars & Saturn? I hear there's lots of natural gas available on Saturn - no, wait - that IS Saturn.

Finally, like him or not, (I don't), let's not wish ill health on our Chief Justice or anyone else. Karma: remember Karma.

Another day breaks and the last one's gone
You dig deep just to carry on
Your debt's paid off but it don't feel gone
So you slip outh the back and you're moving on

I can never figure out how to make a case
That this don't amount to a fall from grace
She wants to know can I replace
This tired wool with satin lace

She says you're on a bridge to nowhere and you're gettin' there fast
Put it in the past, put it in the past
If this is a race then I hope you come last
You're on a bridge to nowhere and you're gettin' there fast

Pressure builds till it breaks the dome
You can build a house you can't build a home
And it's a fool who believes love is bred in the bone
And there's no guarantees that you won't get stoned
Yeah, I'm a fool who believed love is bred in the bone
And there are no guarantees that I won't get stoned

Says you're on a bridge to nowhere and you're gettin' there fast.........
