Imagine you're the district attorney character on, say, television's long-running "Law and Order." You have five witnesses who say they either saw the accused, or learned contemporaneously, that the accused did the alleged bad thing.
Then imagine the accused's defense is essentially a variant of "I don't recall. There's no paper trail. Nope, I didn't do it." And the accused has a friendly witness who at first doesn't recollect if the accused did the bad thing, then ratchets up to "It didn't happen."
If you're the DA, you probably still think you've got a case, right? Maybe you'll just let the jury decide.
That appears to be where we're at in case of The People v. Fred Thompson, the people being family-planning types who say they hired Thompson to lobby the first Bush White House to overturn an anti-abortion executive order. The story was broken by Michael Finnegan of the Los Angeles Times.
Thompson, the former Tennessee Republican senator who appears to be running for president even though he hasn't yet officially announced, says, through a spokesperson, he didn't do the lobbying at all back in 1991. That's a surprise to the family-planning folks who say that's exactly what they hired him to do back during his Washington lobbyist days, to specifically lobby then-White House chief of staff John Sununu.
This matters, of course, because Thompson has been wooing the anti-abortion activists and social conservatives so important to winning the Republican nomination. They're on the jury.
If this story gains legs, that increases Thompson's challenge in winning over that group. If the people who recall signing on Thompson to lobby the first Bush White House are seen as more credible, Thompson will not only suffer with those opposed to abortion but also more generallly because his truthfulness will become an issue.
Cue the "Law and Order" theme.

This LA times hit piece was exposed yesterday at redstate.com:
"Want to know who the Clintons are worried about? Witness tomorrow's coordinated Los Angeles Times article attack hitting Fred Thompson. Despite being a newspaper story tonight, it was posted after 6:30 p.m. and less than an hour later Kevin Drum was already hitting Thompson.
Let's put this in perspective. As the American Spectator notes
In the story that the L.A. Times will report out within the next 24 to 48 hours, the paper will claim that Thompson was "hired" by the National Family Planning and Reproductive Rights Association, whose director, Judith DeSarno, was acquainted with a then-partner at Arent Fox, former Congressman Michael Barnes. In fact, DeSarno worked as a senior aide to Barnes during his time in Congress. According to Arent Fox insiders, Barnes, who now directs the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, and DeSarno are both well-known left-wing activists. Most recently, both were active against the nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Thompson was an adviser to Roberts, and served as his Senate "sherpa" during the confirmation process.
Michael Barnes is a former Democratic congressman who was so left wing, Maryland voters rejected him in the Democratic Senate primary against Barbara Mikulski. DeSarno worked for him in Congress. They are both connected to Arent Fox, which is now a Democrat leaning lobbying firm filled up with Clintonistas.
Here's the deal: Fred Thompson made one phone call for a friend on a matter pertaining to Haiti and felt compelled to register as a lobbyist. Here, the claim Fred was retained to help an abortion group and yet there is no registration paperwork, there are no logs at the White House on the matter, and the former President's Chief of Staff has no recollection of it.
The only two people who do are two fringe lefties.
Meanwhile, Thompson has a 100% pro-life rating while in the Senate and is an "enemy" according to Planned Parenthood.
Two final details: remember, this is the same newspaper that wrote a "serious" news article about Fred Thompson playing an anti-semite in Wiseguy back in the 80's was going to cause him electoral problems in 2008. I guess the LA Times has decided to abandon all sense of fairness. Also, the reporter has issues with being soft on Dems."

Just another BS Repub.

Whether Thompson is being honest on this makes no difference. He reguraly denies he was once pro-choice, despite several questionaires he filled out and videos of him saying he is. The guys honesty is already showing a few dents.
Thompson also spent his 94 campaign driving to event in a red pickup, to show he was a common man. The funny part is, he rented the truck. He didn't even own it. He also claims to be a washington outsider. I guess his definition of an outsider is being a lobbyist for over a decade and member of the senate.
Well he did move to hollywood, so I guess he gets some credit.
The guy is a fake.

You kinda sorta left some stuff out, didn't you? Thompson didn't just deny he did the lobbying, but stated that there are no records to prove it. Also, Sununu, who he was supposed to be lobbying, denied Thompson ever spoke with him about it.
"Thompson spokesman Mark Corallo adamantly denied that Thompson worked for the family planning group. "Fred Thompson did not lobby for this group, period," he said in an e-mail.
In a telephone interview, he added: "There's no documents to prove it, there's no billing records, and Thompson says he has no recollection of it, says it didn't happen." In a separate interview, John Sununu, the White House official whom Thompson was hired to contact, said he had no memory of any lobbying and doubted it took place.
Sununu said in a telephone interview: "I don't recall him ever lobbying me on that at all. I don't think that ever happened. In fact, I know that never happened."

The "family planning group" (which is made up of donors to Sen. Clinton's campaign, btw) and the LA Slimes (with its spotty record for accuracy) can easily prove their case and simultaneously knock Fred out of the lead in the GOP race.
All they have to do is produce billing records. My money says they don't have any.
Another day, another hit piece on Fred performed by a willing liberal media for its beloved Clintons.

Hollywood lobbyist Freddy Thompson has more than just this one lobbying instance to explain, there are many more questionable clients that this b-list actor worked for and still needs to answer for.
If he makes it to the general election he has to explain his funding of and support for Scooter Libby.
Is this fat slob even going to get in the race?
I'm beginning to think that he's just going to sit on the sidelines and let the Wingnut crowd compare him to Ronbo Reagan.
Lazy bum!

SCSoxFan,
Thompsons former lobbying clients have all the proof they need that Fat Freddy worked for them i.e. cancelled checks etc.

Bruce everyone knows that you are an RNC stooge. Your propaganda falls on deaf ears. The party you represent has been highjacked by neo-cons who have rendered it unable to govern effectively. Corruption and stain on America will be Mr Bush's legacy. I really don't know how you can support them, but then again your comments have marginalized you. Truely pathetic.

...let's get to the really important issue in the Fred Thompson story...
...with him leaving "Law and Order" and Sam Watterson moving up to the big DA chair, who will replace Jack McCoy as assistant DA?...
...we retort...you decide...

What source can you cite backing up your statement that Fred Thompson is an "enemy" of P.P (according to P.P )?
Thanks.

Jim,
FDT didn't move to Hollywood. He's been living in the D.C. Beltway since he sold his house in Tennessee after retiring from the Senate. Last month I heard his campaign was looking for a house for him to buy in the Nashville area since FDT doesn't want to run as a Northeast Virginian.
Posted by: anonymous | July 7, 2007 5:01 PM
LOL, Man the radical left is having a heart attack over Fred. I have never seen simple in house tele-conversations or consultations called lobbying, or even an interview by a prospective client.
It is simple!
If he did lobby then the proof should be easy to obtain. Not his firm but him. Billing for a lobbyist is similar to a law firm. The invoice will specify the lobbyist and number of hours billed.
This should be challenged at every turn. It is obvious that Hillaryland is using all tools available to fabricate evidence to harm Fred's credibility.
HEY HILLARY! WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO VINCE FOSTER?

Posted by: Catherine | July 7, 2007 8:12 PM
Whether Sturm is a pro troll or not, he's got a point. If Thompson was hired, where's the proof? Aren't journalists supposed to have proof of something before they publish? Or is it OK for Jayson Blair to find a job at a paper of record again?

Note the lack of a disclaimer that the Tribune Company owns the LA Times, which specializes in hit pieces against Republicans. Most notable was a series
with no attribution against Arnold Schwarzeneger published three days before his gubernatorial election. And people wonder why the Times' circulation is dropping like a rock.

Incredible!!!
Bruce uses as singular source, THE AMERICAN SPECTATOR (same Right-WingNut publication that
propagated & mainstreamed
the infamous 'Arkansas

regurgitated Clinton-hating
lies, conspiracies, virulent
campaigns-illegal activities
toward destroying the Clinton Family; W.J. Clinton
Presidency/Legacy; Hillary
Clinton public service career & elected political
aspirations-achievements).
Even referencing such a
vile publication vis-a-vis
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, IS
inexcusable, to be sure!?!
I repeat: Incredible.

Clearly not a literal reference. Hunting down the facts on issues. Fred is a dinosaur with a trophy wife. Besides I'm not a gun advocate. Law enforcement has better things to do with they're time than visit a blogger. A sense of humor you lack. Cue Law and Order music.
Posted by: Dinosaur Hunter | July 8, 2007 3:35 AM
Winghunter as I digest your insinuation that a bad joke on a blog has sinister intent, it makes one think about what a Thompson administration would look like. I feel like your painting me out to be a real life version of John Malkovich from In The Line of Fire? Great movie by the way. You folks really need to get a grip. What the heck is the republican party becoming. A person makes a joking comment about an actor being old, regarding an article in a newspaper focusing on Fred's family-planning stance during his Washington lobbyist days and voila axe murderer. Fred my apologies for a dumb comment. Happy now Winghunter. Freedom of speech just watch what you say. Chilling!
Posted by: Dinosaur Apologist | July 8, 2007 4:44 AM
Is this guy really the best the GOP can come up with, now that it's clear none of the people running can win?
Oh I see. Run another actor. Yeah, that'll fool the people again.
Not.
Posted by: Cheryl | July 8, 2007 3:35 PM
Yoohoo, Frank. It appears Mr. Finnegan may have edited his original article (without informing his readers) to eliminate some information which might discredit Ms. DeSarno's claims. I have a feeling it's Mr Finnegan who should be worried- not Fred Thompson.
Posted by: jimboster | July 8, 2007 4:48 PM
Thompson is clearly gearing up for a run as evidenced by this Sunday mornings talk shows. I hope they do run him. I see no difference between Thompson and the rest of the republican dreck trying to get elected. All show and no go. To bad they can't field a candidate with some real ideas so that the American people would win no matter which party got elected. Alas this is not the case. Seems to me that the republican party has been highjacked by a bunch of macho old guys who like to spend lot's of our hard earned tax dollars. Conservatives take back your party. Neo-cons have trampled anything good that the GOP stood for.
Posted by: Former Brainwashed Republican | July 8, 2007 5:31 PM
I'm laughing listening to some of the Wingnuts on here blaming Hillary for exposing Hollywood lobbyist Fred Thomp$on'$ past lobbying jobs.
Why would Hillary care about a fat GOP b-list actor who doesn't even have the nerve to get in the Presidential race until after this fall when he can claim that he was always against the Iraq war?
I wonder if Freddy is going to rent a red pickem' up truck again to make rednecks in the south think he's one of them and not the high paid Wa$hington lobbyist that he really is?
