The Agriculture Department, which has custody of the pit bulls in Michael Vick's Virginia dogfighting operation, has contracted with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to "conduct an assessment of the dogs.''
The ASPCA will spend about three weeks evaluating the 50 pit bulls before making recommendations to USDA officials regarding disposition of the animals.
The Justice Department issued this summary regarding the plan Download file for dealing with the dogs.
There has been speculation that many of the dogs have been so damaged by the dogfighting lifestyle and training that they will have to be put down.

HERE'S AN IDEA HOW ABOUT FOR EVERY DOG THAT HAS TO BE PUT DOWN THEY GIVE VICK AND HIS BUDS A YEAR IN JAIL AND I MEAN A FULL YEAR EACH ANIMAL NOT NO SUSPENDED TIME

How about hancuffing Vick behind his back, tie a porkchop around his neck and let him play with the little doggies?

Perhaps Vick's dogs can be used to help
guard the cell block where Vick will be
hanging out for hopefully a long time.

Michael Vick deserves everything coming to him and then some.
There is one concern I have here, though. In recent years we hear reports of judges giving probation to child rapists. Mr. Cooey, raper and murderer of Jessica Lunsford, had abused children countless times. The media barely covers this criminal justice and in fact, many members of the media have been covering up and protecting judges who give probation, six months, one year, etc. to folks who repeatedly rape and abuse children. These kids are scarred for life. In fact, in many respects their lives have been taken from them.
So we have folks who want Michael Vick and his buddies sent up the river for a long, long time (and so do I), but where is the outrage when liberal judge after liberal judge lets child rapists off time and time again?

I know from expereince many of these dogs could be saved. But it would NOT be easy. It is sad really. Some of the nicest dogs you will ever meet are pit bulls, but once they are tainted by subhumans like Vick getting them healthy (physically and mentally) is a real challenge.
A lot depends on the dog in question. I hope they aren't evaluating the dogs in mass. Each dog needs to be evaluated seperately. I will admit, some of the dogs may be beyond redemption. But not all of them.

Very sad that fifty more dogs might be killed because of Michael Vick. How many dogs were killed in the six years they were running this dog-fighting property?

I'm hoping that at least some of these poor creatures can be rehabilitated and will find a home to live out their lives. Granted, they will not be able to be in a home with other pets and will probably have to avoid dog parks. I hope there are people who are willing to take the time and effort to save some of these dogs.

You're right. The sweetest dog I've ever met in my life was a Pit Bull. THAT is their first nature. Sadly it is because they're so strong that they're turned into fighters by "humans" like Vick.

Please John, judges of every party, left, right, black, white et.al. let people off. The corruption of judges has not limits or boundries.
I say let Michael suffer the same fate as his dogs. May help other people think twice.

The picture of this dog -- her demeanor and face -- says it all. Wants to be good, wants to serve, but will probably be destroyed for those traits.

If the dogs are spared, and by chance they end up being adopted out--I want to make one thing extremely clear: DOGS, LIKE PEOPLE, HAVE POST TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME. They may appear on the surface very friendly and may pass every evaluation--but flashbacks do happen. Which means a child, another dog, or elderly person, may get tore up and get ripped to shreds.
It could mean a major lawsuit against the adoption agency. SOmeone may get killed. And I'm sorry when it comes to compromising HUMAN SAFETY I draw the line--human safety comes first.
Unless these animals are kept AWAY from family homes, I cannot support the measure to save these dogs. If it's 100% guaranteed these animals never be adopted out, then that's fine. But someone has to flip the bill to care for them in a facility.
THESE DOGS ARE A POTENTIAL DANGER TO HUMAN LIFE AND SAFETY. THEY ARE A DANGER TO CHILDREN, OTHER PETS, AND THE ELDERLY. I cannot over emphasize that. They must be kept away from human society.
It's not the dogs' fault, but it WILL be the fault of people if they are allowed to be adopted out and they end up mangling or killing someone. YOu have no idea how serious this is.

Dear Mr. Luke Thomas:
With all due respect, I cannot accept your alarmist viewpoint without any proof to back up your warning.
Please provide proof that you are, in fact, an authority on animal behavior or refrain from pretending you know what you are talking about.

Mr Thomas, are you saying this about ANY dog that has been in an abusive situation, or are you saying this is a situation that could occur because the dogs in question are Pit Bulls?
I work for a University Trauma Center and can say that Pit Bulls are NOT the leader in human attacks. However, the liberal media will not bother to waste airtime on a Golden Retriever or Labrador, instead they want to grab the headlines with the "vicious" Pit Bull. Granted, the Pit Bull has the capacity to do serious damage, but as someone who has seen firsthand the victims of dog attacks in my area, I have realized that ALL dogs have that potential under certain circumstances. One of my worst memories was a woman that came into our clinic missing her bottom lip because her COCKER SPANIEL (no, I am not kidding) bit off her bottom lip. She went thru several surgeries and months of therapy just learning how to speak and eat and drink again. But was this reported in the news? NO. We have several dog-bite victims a day, and maybe once every few weeks one of the dogs is a Pit Bull, and they are the only ones that make the news. The media does indeed like to alarm the public when it comes to Bullys, just like the wrong people, no matter what the color of their skin, like the dog for the simple fact that it is a status symbol, and as long as people like Michael Vick and others that have not one shred of human decency can get their hands on a Pit Bull, Bullys will continue to be vilified by most people. And once Bullys are gone, or banned, they will turn to the Rottweillers, the German Shepards, or any other powerful breed that they can get their hands on. God forbid all the big dogs are banned, they could start picking on your Chihuahua or Jack Russell Terrier next. Bottom line is that all breeds can attack, and as long as people with bad intentions can get their hands on any dog, we will continue to have this problem. I personally support any laws that protect animals from this type of abuse, as long as they are not Breed-Specific. These dogs deserve a chance to live a good life, if they are capable, under certain conditions. I have a rescue Bully myself, and yes, it takes a certain understanding of what the dog has been thru, and that is the abuse, not the breed. It all boils down to being a responsible pet owner.

I run a rescue home in fort wayne, in. I have rescued over sixteen american pitbull terriers over three years. I know it doesn't seem like alot but, to this breed everyone counts. What Mr. Vick did is unforgivable. People like him make it hard for someone like me to maintain a high number of this breed. The first thought that comes to mind is that I'm like him but thats not the case. I beleive each dog has a heart and deserves a second chance no matter of their past. Mr. Vick has showed a prime example of the phrase " Don't hate the breed hate the deed". I hope with the months he serves in federal prison he is faced with pictures of what he did to those innocent creatures who looked towards him for guidance and training. He let them down and pitbull us owners around the world down.
