The Bush administration, girding for a political storm in September, has dismantled its two tallest lightning rods before Labor Day.

With the resignation of Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales announced today, and with the departure of chief political adviser Karl Rove announced earlier this month, the White House has deprived the Democrat-led Congress of its two highest-value political targets in continuing investigations into the firings of federal prosecutors and anti-terrorism tactics.

The administration is heading into a month of potentially bruising hearings on Capitol Hill, facing not only probes into the Justice Department’s dismissals of U.S. attorneys and the warrantless surveillance of suspected terrorists, but also a renewed congressional debate over the disputed “surge’’ of U.S. military forces in Iraq.

While both Gonzales and Rove are leaving of their own apparent volition, the president’s acquiescence after months of controversy over the roles that the embattled attorney general and chief political operative have played could serve to defuse much of the continuing criticism, analysts say – or at least push it off the front pages.

As attention turns toward continued funding for the war in Iraq – with the president promising a progress report before Sept. 15 – the White House will need all the good will it can muster among congressional leaders searching for ways to force a draw-down of troops.

But the president will have to press his case – most importantly his insistence on patience with the mission in Iraq – without some of the biggest players of his administration.

Gonzales is the newest in a long line of departures from the administration as it nears its final year: He follows Rove, Dan Bartlett, ex-counselor to the president and another longtime adviser from Texas, former budget director Rob Portman, former White House counsel Harriet Miers after Republicans rejected her nomination to the Supreme Court, former chief of staff Andrew Card and ex-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who resigned the week the GOP lost control of Congress in mid-term elections influenced by opposition to the war.

“You always see, in the final two years of a president, a hemorrhaging of key staff,’’ said Norm Ornstein, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, citing “people who have been around for six years... Or people who are just burned out… along with those who get caught up in scandal.’’

But, “you put those things together with this president’s deep-seated reaction of never wanting to admit a mistake,’’ Ornstein said. “Now they want to cut their losses.’’

The White House maintains that it already has replaced the recently departed with “first-rate talent.’’ Tony Snow, the White House press secretary who has allowed that he too will leave before the end of Bush’s term, points to Iraq war adviser Gen. Doug Lute, legal counsel Fred Fielding and nominated budget director Jim Nussle.

“The president’s agenda is sufficiently bold, and the stakes sufficiently high that talented, experienced and dedicated people are going to find this kind of service attractive, exciting and rewarding,’’ Snow said today. “It also obviously will be important to assemble a team that can remain in place through the home stretch.’’

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said Gonzales had reached his own decision, in an attempt to “put this period behind us and move on.’’

Yet some say this administration’s agenda is beyond salvaging, that even Gonzales’ departure will not quiet the controversy over prosecutor firings and terrorist surveillance – that confirmation hearings for a successor will only become a venue for more criticism.

“I don’t know how many arteries you can have spurting and still have any hope of staying alive,’’ said Jim Jartris, a Republican lawyer working for a Washington lobbying firm. “You expect any administration at this point to be in somewhat of a lame-duck stage, but when things are going as wrong as they are for these guys I don’t know how they can recover.’’

Jartris, who served the Republican Policy Committee in the Senate and worked on the confirmation of former Atty Gen. John Aschcroft, also suggests that, whomever the president nominates as a new attorney general, the hearings will only open a new battleground over the attorney firings and terrorism surveillance.

“Whoever comes after (Gonzales)... they are going to ask him, Was he right in firing these guys, was he right in the warrantless wiretaps, Jartris said. “I don’t think things are going to get better when you look down the road.’’

Getting rid of lightning rods is a good idea. I think the whole republican party needs to spend "more time with their families".

MR. LAME DUCK SQAUKLING OVER THE NEXT 18 MONTHS.

SO WHO WILL POLICE THE WHITE HOUSE NOW?

CHETOFF, YEA RIGHT!

By all means, let's get it on to the Iraqi Civil War fiasco.

Yes, the Dems don't like anti-terror tactics. The Loony Left and their operatives in the media want the U.S. to be victims of terrorism day in and day out. Anything to bring down a capitalist, democratic country and turn it into another Hugo Chavez Venezuala, that is the goal of the Left and the media in the U.S.

Since the Clintons are such good friends with the Bushes, how about Bill for
attorney general...that is, if he got his law license back from being disbarred.

Shrub is hoping to keep his civil war in Iraq going until Jan 09 when he can pass off his self-created mess to the new Democratic President.

Repugs are so stupid, W. doesn't care about you, he's worried about himself, nothing more, nothing less.

Off topic but guess what, another Republican Congressman has been busted for being a pervert! Yep, Idaho Senator (Republican of course) Larry Craig tried to get some dude to get it on with him in an airport in Minnesota.

I know, it's not relevant. But you just got to love the "family values" of the anti gay GOP.

Is there anything they don't lie about?

Hey John D!!!

Dems also don't like criminals -like you sick buddy Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho)who was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plain clothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a “he said/he said misunderstanding,” and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, “What do you think about that?” the report states.

I heard W's speech re. Gonsales; He sounded drunk. Unreal.

Congress needs to give up on all the hearings and just get on with the impeachment of bush and cheney. that is why gonzo resigned, he didnt want to be a part of bush and cheney getting kicked out of office.

Random Thoughts
If Bush wants to make Iraq his last stand, by all means, as he once said, "Bring it On".

John D's special brand of sunshine makes Bruce seem just kinda quirky and unique.

Craig, Rob Allen...what is it with the GOP and men's restrooms?

Off subject;

Another family values Republic tumbles out of the closet;

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/08/sen-craig-arres.html

This has been completely suppressed as far as I know, until now.

Rethuglican bloggers totally amaze, yet disgust, me with their pedestrian narrow-mindedness and their penchant for parrotting the mantra of stale AM radio hacks like Hannity and Limbaugh.

Now here's why:

Ask any of my journalistic contemporaries, James Frank, Jill Zucker, Clarence Paige, Stewart Smoot, "Moose" Mike Tackett, and they will be quick to tell you that the world of reporting has changed; not only do we have the spontaneity of the Internet but here is a golden oppportunity to present opposing points of view with the rapier-like wit of a liberal member of the Fourth Estate.
Here is your chance to take the liberal media to the verbal woodshed, clean their clocks, and wipe that small college educated smirk off their white wine sipping, organic strawberry nibbling faces.

But no...

The best you troglodytes can muster is ditto-headed rhetoric that would be sliced to ribbons by anyone who actually gave credence to anything you say, trollish remarks that would shame any self-respecting blog troll, and utterly meaningless phrases like "loony left".

I came here expecting you boys to step up to the plate. You did, but ya struck out, looking...on 3 straight pitches with the bases loaded.

Check this out. Another 'family values' Republican;

My oh my, how many posts in here are there about Larry Craig? You Loony Lefters are the true hypocrites. As I have stated before a friend of mine is gay and came out to me a few years ago. I was shocked cause he never had a hard time getting the girls and always had them around. And hot looking girls too. Served in the military too.

After he came out to me (and we are still friends, by the way), he talked about how hard it was for him to live the two lives and have "other thoughts" while with his girlfriends.

Apparently there are more guys than one would think who are gay but married and with kids. Shoot, my mom worked with a man who one day came home and told his family (two teenage kids) that he was guy and getting a sex change.

Anyway, rather than castigate these married men who may be actually gay, I sympathize with them. I don't condemn them nor do I make fun of them or put them down.

My gay friend is one of the nicest and classiest people one could ever come across and for 15 years he lived a double life, going out with girlfriends, getting girlfriends whenever he wanted them, but in reality his interests were elsewhere.

We don't know the full story about Larry Craig. Maybe he's gay, but married with kids. Rather than put the guy down and spew the usual hate and bullnonsense you blithering losers on the Left put forth 24/7, I will choose to have some understanding of the guy.

If he practiced some lewd behavior then he must deal with the consequences. Otherwise, Loony Leftists and by the way, the worst mankind has to offer, why don't you all go to that place down under?

Since the Clintons are such good friends with the Bushes, how about Bill for
attorney general...that is, if he got his law license back from being disbarred.

More dribble from "Journalist" Johnny D.

Dimwitted for life Johnny E.: Darnell is Darnell. I post as me and me only. We all know you cannot say the same. And we all know you have posted as me too.

"GOP" now stands for "gang of perverts". What does it take to keep the GOPper ZIPpers zipped? When did "family values" start meaning "molesting guys in airport bathrooms in Minnesota"?

A reluctant resignation from Gonzales is the sign of Americans’ strong voice of their disapproval towards the Bush administration. It is no surprise to anyone that our president and his administration have stirred and cause scandals within White House and hid truth from the American public. Similar to the dealings with the war in Iraq, this administration has been feeding lies to the public. Now the war has proven to be a failure and is causing more violence, terror and poverty in this world. According to the Borgen Project, it only takes $19 billion dollars annually to eradicate world hunger and poverty. However, our government has already spent more than $450 billion dollars over this fruitless war in Iraq. It is time for the Bush Administration to take a real interest in the lives of the American people as well as people who are in desperate needs around the world.

"Anyway, rather than castigate these married men who may be actually gay, I sympathize with them. I don't condemn them nor do I make fun of them or put them down."

No, I expect that you sit down in a big circle jerk and sing "Kumbiyah" while doing lewd things to the guy on your left.

Look, asshole, leave the corny chick stuff to us Democrats. We do that stuff right. You stick with the "biting heads off rats" that you Repukeliscum do so well. You can't do the sympathy stuff. To do that, you actually need empathy, and Repukeliscum don't do empathy.

john D. I'm impressed. you aren't a homophobe. Did you ever think that the religious right contributes to gobs of pain through vilifying and stigmatizing gays? Families break up when one of the parents stops hiding their true identity. Girlfriends, wives, husbands are all very hurt by the closeted "double life". Not to mention the trauma of the person going through it.

Then to find that the ones slinging the arrows are closet cases themselves. That's too much. Say hello to Ted Haggard and the loony right.

John D. still doesn't get the big picture. I have nothing against gays, have many friends of same-sex orientation. The problem with Sen. Craig is that he's part of the "family values" crowd. Craig voted for the Defense of Marriage act and openly condemns homosexual behavior. In other words, he's a hypocrite. As for the "lewd" behavior in bathrooms..get a room, dude.

This story from New West Boise of nearly a year ago, alleged that three separate men reported sexual encounters with Craig over the past four years.

Senator Craig's office flatly rejected the claims. "The Senator says this story is absolutely ridiculous-almost laughable," said press secretary Sid Smith. "It has no basis in fact". Hmmm.

http://www.newwest.net/index.php/city/article/idaho_sen_larry_craig_denies_allegations_of_same_sex_affairs/C108/L108/

John D-

You have slung mountains of sexual mud against Democrats such as Clinton, Dodd, and Kennedy.

Now suddenly you're the voice of tolerance and sympathy for Senator Craig.

It's really sad how you let your anger and fear twist you into such a blatant hypocrite.

Tony, no hypcrite. You just don't get it.

And, Trib censors, please explain how the post from the allged POed Lib (more than likely John E) is acceptable. This ASSHOLE can call me an asshole??

And this comment is "acceptable": No, I expect that you sit down in a big circle jerk and sing "Kumbiyah" while doing lewd things to the guy on your left.

I get it, when the Loony Left calls folks assholes or makes lewd and disgusting comments, that is OK in the eyes of the LIBune censors.

Right, guys???

JohnD, it is nice to know that you have tolerance for homosexuality. But how is the loony left more hypocrital than the Republican religious right? The exploitation of the homophobic fears of the RR is one of the ways Rove won the election for Bush. That and the fear of non-white ethnic groups.

No Johnny, I don't get how discussing an action that Senator Craig pled guilty to is unacceptable in your eyes, but slandering Democratic politicians with hearsay and lies is perfectly okay. Care to try and explain?

John D,

You have looked past the differences with one individual and dwelled on what you have in common, and treated that person with respect. That is wondeful. Why can't you do the same here? If you're the bigger man, like you so often claim to be, show it. You throw daggers and hold up horrible double standards and then act surprised when people respond in kind. Try it another way, give it some time, and if you still get s#$@, then you can at least say you tried and know you are the better man.

Kb, good words, which I have done on several occasions only to get bitten in the butt, not to mention all the posts under "my name" not just here but also in Eric Zorn's blog and I am sure elsewhere.

Anyway, Tony, the actions of Clinton, Kennedy and Dodd are not lies or hearsay.

Also, Tony, it seems to me that someone like a Clinton and Kennedy who continually cheat on their spouse time and time again, is a little different than a married gay man. I'm not excusing his actions or his cheating, what I am doing is understanding his situation (and Loons, do not read more into that you probably would like) and fact that Larry Craig is a man who is caught between his family and another aspect of his life that he occasiojnally fails to overcome.

So cheating with a woman is worse than cheating with a man, Johnny? That's stretching even for you.

But the real point here is that you, personally, make more sexual allegations than just about everyone else around here combined. For you to claim that any sexual allegation, let alone an admitted one, is out of bounds is just beyond belief.

Sometime when YOU are about to attack a Democrat for infidelity, or any other sexual issue, Remember this discussion and see if you really want to make that attack.

Posted by: John D | August 28, 2007 2:23 PM

Your a tool, John. You're 10 lbs in an 8 lb bag. "understanding his situation" my arse... you're understanding his Republican-ness, no more, no less. It shows in your constant lack of "understanding" when Democrats are in similar situations vs. your weak attempt to excuse your family-values Republican today. Why can't you just be honest with yourself. You must cry yourself to sleep at night. You are a tool.
