Cindy Sheehan, who lost a son to the war in Iraq and has camped outside President Bush's ranch in Texas in a campaign of protest against the war, made a tearful announcement today of a new campaign.
For Congress.
In San Francisco, today, citing her son as inspiration, Sheehan said she will run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has represented her district in Congress since 1987.
The anti-war activist is running as an independent.
"The country is ripe for a change," said Sheehan, who spoke at a podium with a photograph of her son, Casey, taped to it. "It's going to start right here and right now."
Casey, 24, was killed in Iraq in 2004.
His mother last month announced her intention to run against Pelosi if the speaker didn't move to impeach Bush by July 23.
Today, Sheehan admitted she has no money for a campaign, but planns to start raising it.
Earlier, Sheehan had said she was finished as a leader in the war protest movement.
“The thing that brought me back in to this faster than I wanted to was when George Bush commuted Scooter Libby's sentence, which I think is treason, and the Democrats didn't do anything about it.”—Sheehan said on CNN"s Situation Room today.
Daniel Ellsberg, veteran of another era's war protests and who was arrested twice with other protesters outside Bush's Texas ranch, showed his support for Sheehan today.
"There is a historic opportunity here for a campaign to help restore our republic and get us out of Iraq," said Ellsberg, a former Pentagon analyst who in 1969 leaked the Pentagon Papers to Congress and the media.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This poor lady. She just skips from one misguided endeavor to another and the media egg her on. She's lost her son, her family and a whole lot of empathy. She needs someone to take her under their wing without trying to use her for their own cause.

I feel sorry for her loss. I think this will be an uphill battle.

Ms. Sheehan has every right to run for Congress. That said, I think what the woman really needs is professional help. I don't mean that in a disparaging way - she needs help.

"LONG LIVE NANCY PELOSI"
WHAT IT ALL BOILS DOWN TOO IS - "BEING A NATION OF LAW" again is what this nation was built on, and if this is her platform. SHE MAY BE THE DARKHORSE OF THE FEMALE GENDER.
MAYBE NOW AFTER THIS LONG OCCUPATION CALLED IRAQI OIL LIBERATION AKA "FORCED RECONCILIATION" REVENUE SHARING SHE CAN ANSWER WHY OUR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN HAD TO MAKE THIS CALL TO DUTY. WHY NOT AFRICA OR THE SUDAN IN 2001?
I WISH HER WELL, BUT NANCY PELOSI WILL CLEAN HER HOUSE, ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME.
SHE ALSO KNOWS THE GOP NIGHT CRALLERS ARE LISTENING RIGHT ALONG WITH KARL ROVE.
MY VOTE WILL COUNT.

It is very heartening to see someone run for congress with a purpose other than ego-tripping. By running she will represent the interests of millions of patriotic Americans, as well as her constituents, who believe that Congress should not be a rubber stamp for the chief executive, and who stand ready to challenge that office when it is necessary to maintain checks and balances. I know that's not what the righteous right wants to hear, but that is what Congress had not done.

Doug, I agree with you, seriously. Course, she has every right to run. She also has been used by the Left wing whack jobs. But she's also abused herself and has been traitorous herself -- appearing with Chavez, for instance, denouncing this country. And, yes, she does need professional help.

A misguided left wing wacko from California who needs professional help? It sounds like she will be very representative of her San Francisco district. Sheehan wins in a landslide.

I think Roger Morris said it best. I'm just kidding. Roger, keep using ALL CAPS in your posts so people can easily tell which ones to skip.
This situation with Sheehan is weird. Why single out Pelosi? If she really wanted to end the war, wouldn't she challenge a Republican House seat?
Everytime I see Sheehan appear in public I feel pity for her. She obviously has suffered a great loss, and I think she is receiving bad advice.

I agree with Cindy Sheehan, I'm disappointed that Speaker Nancy hasn't started Impeachment hearings for Shotgun Dickie and the Yale Frat Boy.
In this generation there have been no White House more deserving of Impeachment than the crooks in the W. White House.

You should call her john, see if you can get a two for one discount.

Normally I won't waste a key stroke on you any more because I can recognize your posts in the first sentence and ususally just scroll through them, but this is too much. And you too Doug, although you and I always agree. Mainly in your phrasing, Doug. Ms. Sheehan doesn't need "help". That makes her sound as if she is unstable. She most likely needs Grief Counselling. None of us can ever understand the soul crushing grief of losing a child unless we've had to live through that experience. My friend was murdered by his girlfriend 20 years ago, and his mother has never completely been the same. Life goes on for her, with a painful emptiness she must now handle. Ms. Sheehan's son has been dead now for 3 years. Give the woman some time. You did get ONE thing right, John. She does have a right to run, no matter how futile. As for your typical comments; speaking out against an illegal occupation of a sovereign nation does NOT make you a traitor. Those in a position of trust lying to the American people to support their illegal and pre-meditated war agenda makes them traitors. None of us are buying this feeble, insincere name-calling as sympathy.

If a person loses a loved one to cancer and becomes an advocate for cancer research, does that make them a liberal whack job? Or from AIDS? Is asking and protesting for more government help treasonous?
Ms. Sheehan has been protesting to find the root cause of the disease that killed her son and she's getting no answers from the people who DO know and won't tell.
They called Michael J. Fox a raging liberal for requesting more funding for stem cell research over Parkinson's. Don't blame the victim.

Mrs. Jesus,
I agree with you. I should have been more careful with my wording.
Posted by: Doug Zook | August 10, 2007 8:01 AM
You are all correct to one degree or another. The woman lost her son and now has lost her mind. There are almost 4,000 women out there who lost their kids in Iraq and many more whose kids have been damaged and only one who was bitten by the urge to be a celebrity.
She's now lost her family and is about to lose an election, if she can get enough backers to finance her effort. She's being used badly by some hard-ball playing folks who will use her until it's no longer to their advantage and then kick her to the side of the road.
It would be nice to see the fools from either side of the policical wars just ignore her and let her go away. If she becomes a force in California, let the local media handle the matter. Why does the national press think this news and feel compelled to report on it?

Casey Sheehan was a brave hero who died for America. He knew why he went to serve his country.
Cindy has tarnished his memory. I'm sorry she lost a son but, she said some 3 weeks ago she was going home and shut up and renew her relations with her other children.
I think her ego has to be assuaged she has illusions of grandeur.
I think Nancy Pelosi is one of the worst people in America certainly in Congress.
But, this Cindy is not going to beat her and W is not going to be impeached.
If Cindy carried off an upset she would be a member of 435 people in Congress. She would never be elected Speaker. Sad sad case is what Cindy is. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Jerry O. Sr says: There are almost 4,000 women out there who lost their kids in Iraq and many more whose kids have been damaged and only one who was bitten by the urge to be a celebrity.
That's kinda cold. Especially when W. could have defrayed this whole situation by meeting and speaking with her in the first place. One conversation with Bush, and this would never have happened. She started out very calm about something thousands of parents wanted answers to. HE'S the one who goaded her into seeking celebrity - not a bunch of liberal whackos. Always blame the liberals.

Yes Cindy, the country needs change. Raise the banner: " A better World is Possible " for a gigantic people's movement for peace with justice. We are with you.

Giraffe,
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
President George W. Bush met with this lunatic and her family right after Casey was brought home!!!
The wacko liberals are behind this latest media whoring.
She's a loon and a TRAITOR!
If anyone needs to be tried and jailed it’s her and her ilk.
Bone up on real history before spouting off.

I think she should go home and make amends with the rest of her family. She has really embarrassed her son, herself, her family and all vets. She is the same as Jane Fonda was in Viet Nam. Get a life woman...
All due respect to her son. He was and still is a hero...

I am glad she has the guts to run-I have heard her speak and she is not crazy or disturbed-she's mad as hell, and I can't understand why all of you aren't-Nancy Pelosi doesn't understand the oath she took, as most of the Republicans also don't get-we are a nation of laws-the Constitution is the only protection America has-the president and his staff have broken the laws and need to be removed-this isn't complicated folks-if you want to live in a dictatorship, you're in the wrong country-if you want to live in a monarchy, you're in the wrong country-I think you all will be surprised at the support Cindy gets from everywhere, not just her area-a large portion of the country wants impeachment started and they are right-Cindy's action is just the beginning.

People that make a difference come from the grass-roots. I saw Cindy when Pelosi and Conyers had her testifying in the basement of the White House where they (Pelosi/Conyers) both declared that they were going to start the Impeachment Process against Bush/Cheny, prior to their winning the elections last year. As soon as they got into office the first thing they did was take Impeachment "off the table." They are the wacko and the mentally-ill. They used Valarie Plame, Cindy, and anyone else they could to substantiate their rise into the positions they now hold, yet they quickly distanced themselves and are now lame ducks, incapable of doing anything except ingratiating themselves with taxpayer's money. They are defunct and useless and I, for one am exceedingly happy that Cindy has taken such a bold step.
For all you whiners and losers who wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone do anything and probably don't even vote, you are the sick ones and this country reflects more of your mentall illness and not Cindy. You believe anything this lunatic in the White House tells you...have you ever looked at any of the Hitler footage where the masses were mesmerized with everything Hitler said? That is what you are reminiscent of...and in case you don't know history, which I am certain you don't..."those who don't remember the atrocities of history are doomed to repeat them. Wake up Stupid!!!

Sharla, you couldn't possibly be a woman. Is this your drag name? Quit telling these blatant lies. We all know that Bushie was too much of a coward to meet with Ms. Sheehan. He can't answer a question that isn't scripted. You are a traitor if you're supporting the illegal occupation of another country. The blood will trickle down (that's a concept you should be able to get) and spill on your hands. I bet you had one of those "W is for Women" bumperstickers. You almost make me wish I had a penis just so I wouldn't have to be classified with you in the US Census.
