The sad thing is there are plenty of laws on the books to ensure these people are either deported or punished. The crime is that federal, state and local officials have been content to look the other way while our laws are ignored. Heaven forbid a cop asked about the immigration status of someone he stops for a violation. It is discrimination if we impound the cars of someone driving without a license.

JM, we have sanctuary cities and Chicago is one of them that protects illegal aliens. We've had illegal aliens in this country kill people through DUI and judges let them go. We've had illegal aliens kill cops and then flee back to Mexico. We've had illegal aliens rape and murder children. In many such instances the authorities knew they were illegal and they had committed other crimes besides being here illegally, only to have judges free them and cities protect them.

Most police chiefs have decided illegal aliens will quit reporting crime and cooperating as witnesses if local cops get involved in enforcing immigration laws.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with this policy, but that's the rational that's offered.

For the time being perhaps Dubya's cranked up workplace employment law enforcement coupled with border security enhancement is the way to go.

If you're referring to municipalities deciding that it's not their police department's role to enforcement immigration laws that would include the vast majority of municipalities throughout the United States.

This issue is one that makes me glad I'm not a union rep any more. SEIU and I parted ways on this subject a long time ago. As IMHO, non-enforcement of immigration/employment laws serves to depress wages and benefits of lawful workers/union members at the low end of the economic spectrum. I caught a lot of grief for this opinion.

Basically, John D is right. There is a lot of bad things that happen within our borders that we should be more diligent about. Unfortunately, when you spend most of your time and resources trying to be the world police (Iraq, as example) you find yourself with limited resources to handle these domestic issues. Sure, this is an overly simplistic view of the situation. The answer to these types of problems are never as simple as they appear on the surface. The simple part is simple people (ie: Newt) trying to agitate the simple minded. This is, and many others are, very complex issues that need deep and serious thought and then serious and even handed solutions. A bunch of sound bytes that cater to the lowest common denominator designed to cause ill-thought overreaction is counterproductive.
We need serious people with serious ideals (beyond their own glorification) dealing with this type of issue. Unfortunately, Newt is not that type of person.

Maybe what we need is to establish a specific or expanded "law enforcement" division of the INS to work directly with local law enforcement in "hot spot" areas of the country. Similar to the way the Treasury Dept. worked with local authorities (the honest ones anyway) during prohibition. i.e. Elliot Ness and the Chicago Police. Of course, hopefully, there are less "crooked cops" today.

We have more criminals per capita than any other civilized society. "Aliens" are a tiny slice of the problem. The "illegal" part of "illegal alien" refers to a misdemeanor, not a violent crime, most "illegals" are peaceful and hard working. Aside from their resident status, most are more law abiding than the citizens who oppose them, much more friendly too.
That being said, if you can not act appropriately in my home, you must leave, if you live in my home and act inappropriatley, you will be disciplined. My door is open to all who want to make my home a better place as well as those who need a helping hand. Newty is not welcome.

I suggest we put the Ku Klux Klan's hatred to good use by authorizing them to deal with illegal immigrants. Especially those guilty of violent crimes.

Identify, jail and then deport them? Are you kidding me?!?!?! We need to spend more money housing illegal immigrants who committ crimes in this country? Send them back where they came from, that is punishment enough for them, or they wouldnt choose to be here.

Illegal immigration is corporate welfare by another name, class warfare by another name, and another way for corporations to suppress wages and expand profitability on the backs of working people. Yes, some liberals support it on social grounds. But the big money and the big backers are big business, brother.

Why do you think President Bush has ALWAYS been so gung-ho about amnesty? You think he suddenly developed empathy on this and only this one singular issue. Call me cynical, but puhleaze. As a liberal, I have been strongly opposed to illegal immigration since I was a teenager, for many reasons including the economic ones enumerated above. The immigration debate crosses party lines and is therefore an especially interesting one in these polarized times.

You can't pin this on "liberals" when the man MOST supportive of illegal amnesty is the right-wing President George W Bush.

Why does it seem like immigration law is the only law that isn't enforced? If I get a lousy parking ticket, and I don't pay it, the fines will increase until finally my license is suspended. But if you're an illegal alien you are left alone.

2. drive without license, regisration & insurance (crime)
3. have baby do not pay- = theft
4. take USA benefits for baby = ripping USA off
5. steal and use SSN = identity theft (felony)
6. health, education etc all subsidized = ripping USA off
7. education for non citizen child = theft
8. return after deportation (crime)
9. ignore deporation orders(crime).
10. don't pay taxes(crime)
11. work illegally

And yet people want these guys to get amnesty and jump ahead of legal immigrants who are law abiding!

The illegal immigration problem can be dealt with ... if only our "representatives" would represent the legal american citizen. Just make SS#s instantly verifyable(just like Visa nd Mastercard) and build a fence. Without a valid SS#, no illegal could obtain a job or obtain social services .... end of the illegal problem, as most would self deport themselves back to their own countries. Gingrich himself has advocated such a solution.... and it is a sound, rational. and executable plan.
While liberal bemoan the loss of less than 4000 volunteer serviceman, we have 25 innocent men, women and children killed daily by illegals. Is it the loss of life, or the american military that liberals find so distasteful?

Several Midwest States have or are looking to pass laws that allow local law enforcement to enfore the federal laws dealing with illegal immigration. {Since the Feds don't} Oklahoma passed one recently, about time we took back America.
