Anti-Iraq War groups have been attempting to pressure Republican lawmakers seen as vulnerable politically, lawmakers who have also questioned progress to date in Iraq, in order to win more votes in Congress for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq sooner rather than later.
But a new conservative group called Freedom's Watch is attempting a counterstrike, launching ads today to pressure those same lawmakers to stick with President Bush who refuses to accept a timetable for withdrawal. Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer is a strategist for the organization.
According to a story in today's Washington Post:
And now the Democrats, along with wavering Republicans, will face an advertising blitz from Bush supporters determined to remain on offense. A new pressure group, Freedom's Watch, will unveil a month-long, $15 million television, radio and grass-roots campaign Wednesday designed to shore up support for Bush's policies before the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Army Gen. David Petraeus, lays out a White House assessment of the war's progress.
The emergence of Freedom's Watch has raised the hackles of the anti-Iraq War groups. Americans United for Change, a liberal organization which has received funding from organized labor.
Following is part of an AUFC press release which includes a table that shows Freedom Watch's advertising buys. The column heading of "GRPs" stands for gross rating points.
By the way, a website for the Center for Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University:
"Gross rating points," or "GRPs," measure how much advertising exposure is going to a particular population on a per capita basis. For example, the measure of 100 GRPs indicates that the population received an average of one exposure per person (although this could have come from 50% of the population seeing the advertising two times). GRPs are the mathematical product of reach and frequency: if the reach is 80% and the average frequency is 2.5, then the GRPs total 200. GRPs thus provide a comparative measure of per capita advertising exposure. They incorporate both how much advertising exposure exists and how much of a particular population was likely to have viewed that exposure.
Here's the AUFC press-release excerpt.
And where are they running their ads against Republicans who are vulnerable electorally and who are under tremendous pressure back home to change course in Iraq. A close examination of the ad buy shows that Freedom Watch is targeting congressional Republicans with a direct message - stand with Bush's failed Iraq war strategy. What follows is an analysis of the ad buy and reasons this group may be targeting these Members of Congress.
