GOP ads to press lawmakers to back Bush on war: The Swamp

The Swamp

Anti-Iraq War groups have been attempting to pressure Republican lawmakers seen as vulnerable politically, lawmakers who have also questioned progress to date in Iraq, in order to win more votes in Congress for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq sooner rather than later.

Ari%20Fleischer.jpg

But a new conservative group called Freedom's Watch is attempting a counterstrike, launching ads today to pressure those same lawmakers to stick with President Bush who refuses to accept a timetable for withdrawal. Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer is a strategist for the organization.

According to a story in today's Washington Post:

And now the Democrats, along with wavering Republicans, will face an advertising blitz from Bush supporters determined to remain on offense. A new pressure group, Freedom's Watch, will unveil a month-long, $15 million television, radio and grass-roots campaign Wednesday designed to shore up support for Bush's policies before the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Army Gen. David Petraeus, lays out a White House assessment of the war's progress.

The emergence of Freedom's Watch has raised the hackles of the anti-Iraq War groups. Americans United for Change, a liberal organization which has received funding from organized labor.

Following is part of an AUFC press release which includes a table that shows Freedom Watch's advertising buys. The column heading of "GRPs" stands for gross rating points.

By the way, a website for the Center for Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University:

"Gross rating points," or "GRPs," measure how much advertising exposure is going to a particular population on a per capita basis. For example, the measure of 100 GRPs indicates that the population received an average of one exposure per person (although this could have come from 50% of the population seeing the advertising two times). GRPs are the mathematical product of reach and frequency: if the reach is 80% and the average frequency is 2.5, then the GRPs total 200. GRPs thus provide a comparative measure of per capita advertising exposure. They incorporate both how much advertising exposure exists and how much of a particular population was likely to have viewed that exposure.

Here's the AUFC press-release excerpt.

And where are they running their ads against Republicans who are vulnerable electorally and who are under tremendous pressure back home to change course in Iraq. A close examination of the ad buy shows that Freedom Watch is targeting congressional Republicans with a direct message - stand with Bush's failed Iraq war strategy. What follows is an analysis of the ad buy and reasons this group may be targeting these Members of Congress.

The only way reporter Frank James finds out about what conservatives are doing is by reading what the liberals in the Washington Post and the AUFC say about it.

Note especially that while the article is (allegedly) about what Freedom's Watch is doing, Frank James doesn't bother to talk to Freedom's Watch, nor does he link to anything FW-related. Instead, he links to 2 sources, both left wing, opposed to what Freedom's Watch is doing.

Typical Swamp.... They don't even pretend to be non-partisan any more.

Since the Swamp reporter won't do it, here's the link to the Freedom's Watch website:
http://www.freedomswatch.org/

"KARL ROVE IS BACK AND HE HAS ALL HIS EMAILS IN HIS BACK POCKET"

THIS IS NOT VIETNAM, AND THEY DIDN'T FOLLOW US HOME. WE INVITED THEM! SO TO KEEP SELLING THE SAME OL POPPY CRACK BUSH MAKES REFERENCE OR INFERENCE THAT IT IS THE SAME PLIGHT.

ITS NOT LIKE THE ADS ON FOX ARE TARGETING NO ONE.

BUSH HAS ALREADY DECIDED THAT THE TROOPS WILL STAY IN IRAQ. HE IS THE DECIDER, HE HEARS THE VOICES. A LOT OF PEOPLE OBVIOUSLY HEARD THE SAME VOICES BECAUSE HE CAN SAY BOO AND WE SAY THE TERROR ALERT HAS JUST CHANGED TO BLUE. POPPY CRACK.

SOMEONE HAS TO DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION ANY WAY IT CAN BE DONE.

It is frustrating to see that the majority of the Republican Party still believes in this failed war. American people are fed up with lies and arrogance from the Bush administration. Not only does this war and the defense policies in this country has very little to prove to its people, also it is causing great violence, terror and poverty around the world and in this nation. There are more critical issues that affecting the lives of millions of Americans and people world wide that our president is not taking actions against. Now the war has proven to be a failure and is causing more violence, terror and poverty in this world. According to the Borgen Project, it only takes $19 billion dollars annually to eradicate world hunger and poverty. However, our government has already spent more than $450 billion dollars over this fruitless war in Iraq. It is time for the Bush Administration to take a real interest in the lives of the American people as well as people who are in desperate needs around the world. Stop the lies and stop poverty now. Put away the arrogance and put the needs of the people before political gains.

So the GOP wants Republic lawmakers to pick up the glass of kool aid and drink it. Will they be good little obedient Republic's? Only time will tell. Expect the Democrats to force Republics to stand up and have their votes counted many, many times.

By the way, Bush lied when he said communist Viet Nam was responsible for the "killing fields.

The Killing Fields were in Cambodia and, actually, the Communist Vietnamese ended them when they invaded and ousted Pol Pot.

Remember: Bush ALWAYS lies.

"The only way reporter Frank James finds out about what conservatives are doing is by reading what the liberals in the Washington Post and the AUFC say about it."

Well, with right-wing sources, that's usually the more palatable way to do it. I'm on the mailing list for a number of conservative groups and I have to time my reading so as to be far enough from my last meal so as not to yack and also far enough from my next meal so as not to lose my appetite. Unless I'm on a diet, that is, in which case I read as much as I can.

But as for the website you linked, Bruce, it really doesn't say a whole lot: "Freedom’s Watch is dedicated to educating individuals about and advancing public policies that protect America’s interests at home and abroad, foster economic prosperity, and strengthen families. Through outreach and education, communications to key members of Congress, and bold public awareness initiatives, Freedom’s Watch is fighting for the ideals and policies that keep America strong and prosperous. We welcome all those who share our values to join our efforts." It's pretty hard to argue with that. I mean, personally, I support ideals and policies that keep America weak and downtrodden.... I'm not finding a lot of specifics on their website.

This pro-war/pro-GOP group (Freedom Watch?) is going to do a great job....of continuing to secure the fact that the Republican party will be close to extinction after 08.

Ah, Bruce. Are you really that thick? Don't you see that this group, founded and funded by neocons (you can see who at the link YOU provided) is targeting REPUBLICANS? 37 of the first 41 ad buys are not meant to sway Dem congresscritters, but Republicans trying to distance themselves from your Failed Leader.
I guess desperate times call for drastic actions, but, as a Democrat, I want to thank them for reminding voter of Bush/Iraq/Bush/Iraq AND spending $15 million to do it.

Bruce,

I followed your advice (and your link) and went to the Freedom Watch web site.

There is absolutely nothing of substance there. There is a button to donate money, a button to join and one press release – which basically repeats exactly what was written in The Swamp.

Before you attach a link and ask people to view it you should make sure it has something to say.

On the plus side it did have a lot of pretty flag picturesand a cool looking eagle.

On MSNBC, Democratic Congressman Brian Baird from Washington says the surge is working, the TROOPS told him it was working and that we should stay in Iraq and finish the job.

For the Loony Left unebelievers, here is a link to his interview (By the way, Baird WAS an anti-war congressman)

http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?f=00&g=b1c88fc8-6e63-4629-9f6a-a59d95cabfdd&p=News_Top_Politics&t=c1152&rf=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3096434/&fg=

John D, or is it Bruce?
Something for you:
"The surge has shown some successes. But the real success ... is coming from something totally different, and that is coming from America cutting deals with its former enemies, principally the Ba'athist insurgents, the Sunni insurgents. It's by cutting a deal with the Ba'ath Party on the terms that the Ba'ath Party offered America four years ago and had to wait for America to be battered into submission to accept that the tide has turned against al-Qaida. It's by unleashing the Ba'ath that the al-Qaida bombs are coming down, that the al-Qaida attacks are starting to slow down, not directly from the surge and not from the presence of U.S. troops."
The result of this short-term improvement in the statistics is a worsening of the long-term reality on the ground. Iraq is a more dangerous place, less likely to achieve the results we claim to want, as a result of our recent actions there. Ware again:
"What the U.S. troops are doing is giving a set of numbers, a series of data, a number of lowered attack figures that may give the military the political cover it needs in Washington. But at the end of the day, by cutting these deals the seeds are being sown for a much broader, more entrenched civil war that America will leave behind."
Is the Surge working? It isn't creating a safer Iraq, that's clear. But it's beginning to work very well on Democrats and the media. Its ultimate target is the American people, and its ultimate goal is tolerance for an extended occupation. It may well succeed at that.

Capt. Patriquin wanted the Surge to succeed, but he'll never know how it turns out. He was killed by an IED last December.

The next time somebody tells you the Surge is succeeding, ask them: At what?

Your grasping at straws again Little Johnny Neverserved, stay the course pal because us Dems can't wait for 08 to get here

Greggie, Ariana Huffington's blog is such a reputable source of info.

Loony Lefter: Glad to bring this news to you, but you folks will lose BIG TIME in 08.

Can't wait to hear you folks whine and cry. Well, actually it's what you folks do all day anyway. It'll just be more tolerable to listen and see it in 08.

Is this group the new Swiftboaters?

I love to see Republicans eat their own. We cannot be safe with American power in the hands of Republicans.

You know, they are talking about invading IRAN now!

Did Roger Morris somehow find a way to hack into the Trib's computers?

You Democrats slay me. All this bold printing just means Democrats are still Democrats and there no cure for that. All you leftists want is attention--you don't know what to do--frnakly bold printing won't stop your illogical arguments it will just bring more notice to them.
Wakeup America we're dealing with stupid Senators in Illinois one is running for prez the other is out to lunch. Jerry White, Springfield,IL

Freedom's Watch is a White House front group founded by Ari Fleischer. He is also the spokeperson. Not too biased eh, Bruce.

Do you people know we have been getting our fannies kicked in Iraq for four and a half years? Why are we still at this? Why did our Generals including Petraeus go along with such failed tactics for so long? Why are the Generals immune from blame? Why is their no remorse for the 3,700 dead soldiers and 11,000 crippled soldiers.
These casualties were caused by the incompetence of Bush and his administration and his Generals? He is now aiming to equal the ten years and the casualtioes of Viet Nam.
We must be crazy to still be in Iraq.
