President Bush issued this statement about Hastert today:
"It has been a great pleasure forging a close friendship and working relationship with Denny Hastert. He is a good and decent man, and he was a strong and effective Speaker.
"After teaching government and history at Yorkville High School in Illinois, Denny began making history serving in the Illinois House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives. During his two decades in Congress, Denny rose through the ranks as a hard-working Member whom colleagues on both sides came to admire, trust, and respect – and became the longest-serving Republican Speaker in history.
"Drawing on lessons he learned as a coach, he successfully guided Members of Congress to work together to enact legislation that has improved the lives of Americans. He led Congress to reduce taxes, improve education, strengthen Medicare, bolster our national defense, and support our troops. Our nation is stronger because of his service.''

Good riddance, Tubby
Ol' Denny's district is going Democratic next time around.

Good riddance. Hastert was a foul smelling political hack who infested his district for too long. He was also nothing but a rubber stamp for George Bush and his administration.
We all also need to remember that Hastert has links and is tied to the convicted federal felon Jack Abramoff.

Hastert's greatest legacy is that he was such a poor political leader. He lost the congress....giving voice to communist liberals. Just remember, your socialistic views are not what got you elected, it's horrible republican leadership like Hastert. You should all love him.

Good riddance to a bumbling hack of Tom Delay who presided over the impeachment of a good president and blindly ushered the agenda of a bad president.
He closed his eyes during the Mark Foley sex scandal.
Didn't he profit from a land deal? Did that ever get investigated?
Help me here people, did he do anything but protect his party and himself?

"...whom colleagues on both sides came to admire, trust, and respect...."
Now if that isn't one of the biggest lies I've seen in awhile. Denny was hand picked by Tom DeLay to be Speaker and front man while DeLay controled the House from behind the curtain.
Just one more rat jumping ship.

I don't know of any "communist liberals". Sounds like another conservative scare tactic.
Hasn't anyone learned that conservatives & the GOP need to get a divorce?

I am an extremely happy resident of the 14th District today. Worst Speaker EVER. The chicken hawk "coach" will go down in history as the man who allowed the Bush administration to trash this country without an iota of oversight or accountability (and let's not forget the impeachment debacle). His record as Speaker and Bush tool makes the mythology of "his characteristic ability to seek consensus" laughable. This “Republican” gang has cynically dragged the meaning of the phrases “public servant” and “Christian leadership” through the slime for far too long. Good riddance indeed.

Hastert looks like he has lost some weight.
Thankfully, the big man's refusal to resign in disgrace over the Mark Foley scandal helped the Democrats regain their rightful position in Congress this past November.

I wonder if John D knows how much Hastert pays for his suits.
