Obama campaign says plethora of candidate forums getting in the way of campaigning. Photo Agence France Presse

The campaign for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said today that he would skip the majority of future presidential candidate forums because they are getting in the way of meeting with voters.

"Unfortunately, we simply cannot run the kind of campaign we want and need to, engaging with voters in the early states and Feb. 5 states, if our schedule is dictated by dozens of forums and debates," campaign manager David Plouffe said on the campaign's Web site. "Ultimately, the one group left out of the current schedule is the voters and they are the ones who ask the toughest questions and most deserve to have those questions answered face to face."

The announcement came on the eve of a candidate debate in Des Moines, an event Obama is still expected to attend. His campaign said he would continue to participate in debates sponsored by the Democratic National Committee, but would bypass most of the forums that are sponsored by various groups.

On Tuesday, for example, he is schedule to appear before the national VFW convention in Kansas City. That event remains on his calendar.

Plouffe said that beginning next week, Obama will not accept invitations from the wide variety of organizations and groups that are planning to hold forums that focus on their particular interest.

In recent weeks, the Democratic candidates have had especially busy forum schedules, including two in Chicago that took place within three days of each other (the YearlyKos blogger convention and an AFL-CIO forum at Soldier Field).

“We simply cannot continue to hopscotch from forum to forum and run a campaign true to the bottom up movement for change that propelled Barack into this race,” Plouffe wrote.

The events take time away from campaigning in important early voting states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. They also have not been the strongest settings to showcase Obama, who has drawn mixed reviews in several forums and tends toward lengthy answers that don't always work well on television.

Plouffe said voters and the media will still get plenty of chances to see Obama face-off against the other candidates.

"So far, Barack has attended seven Democratic debates and nineteen candidate forums," Plouffe said. "By the end of this year, Obama will have participated in a total of 15 Democratic debates."

Here is the link to Plouffe's memo.

Here's a new way to keep Obama from
putting his foot into his mouth again...just don't let him speak extemporaneously any more. Make sure he's scripted and he won't talk about bombing other countries or American flyers bombing civilians. Maybe they should just have Rich Little record messages in Barack's voice and have Obama mouth the words.

"Obama to Skip Some Future Forums"?

On no, what are Trader Terry and Little Johnny D' FootinMouth going to do now?!?!

Basically what the Obama people are saying is that Barack says too many dumb things in the debates and we spend too much time trying to put the fires out.

Trickled On Net Roots:

I'll just have to find my laughs elsewhere.

Like most democratic canidates, he'll skip any Fox News debates and only take questions from snowmen.

Good. I'm sick of debates where folks like Hillary -who has the 30 second canned nonanswer-answer- is declared the winner. If your criticism is that Obama doesn't do good in these "debates",then that's fine too. Let's elect someone who's true answers are actually well thought out- like Obama.

Imagine- a president who actually thinks!!!

I agree with jds. I'm sick of everyone who "stays on message" all the time. Let them step in it now and then, lets see what they're made of.

So because their guy doesn't stack up well when in a head to head match up, their new politics is to ignore 'special' interest such as Veterans, Labor, or the many other groups representing ordinary Americans?

This truly is "New Politics" - were if you can't win, you simply refuse to show up. Obama may have the few thousand active members of the 'netroots', but he just lost the grassroots.

As I predicted, he is crashing quicker than Dean did.

Obama is skipping the forums and debates because Hillay beats teh snot out of him everytime.

Good for him, these are now too numerous and are not really debates anyways.

Obama's been to 19 forums and 7 debates so far. He'll be in 15 debates by the end of the year.

That's just crazy. Memorizing 90 second answers and 30 second follow ups, practicing one upmanship, figuring out how to lay silly gotcha traps, that's all useless. These are talents a cheesy lawyer needs, not the president of the United States. He's never going to use them in office and it's no way to get a handle on what the candidates' positions are.

Anyone who's seen Obama in a townhall setting answering questions from the audience like the breakout session at Yearly Kos knows that's a much more productive venue for him and everyone involved.

This guy is a bigger policy wonk than Bill Clinton. He has far and away the most candle power in the field. His answers are comprehensive, persuasive and conversational so they never get boring.

There isn't Hillary's air of ambition for ambition's sake or the self conscious populism of Edwards about him. Just a guy who knows what he wants to do as president and most importantly how to accomplish it once he gets there.

There's always cameras at these events. I assume all the video will be available on YouTube. I highly recommend every voter view them. If you haven't seen him in this kind of forum you'll really be impressed.

I want a series of one-topic debates, not the mishmash of random questions and soundbite answers we've been given so far. These are serious issues, and 30- and 60-'answers' don't do them justice.

This truly is "New Politics" - were if you can't win, you simply refuse to show up. Obama may have the few thousand active members of the 'netroots', but he just lost the grassroots.

You idiot. The Republicans have been doing that for 50 years. That's why you support childish little georgie. If you can't win, you don't vote. You've been doing it for years. Hastert trying to say the Repubs lost the elections because of the American People is hysterical. Yeah, are you getting it? You lost the elections because the AMERICAN PEOPLE don't want you!

gee bowing out and the race just starting huh...he is not even faced with the tough questions yet like his relationship with the briber...oops i meant fundraiser...tony rezko yet.

Good Idea, since Mr Harvard Law manages to stick his foot in his mouth when he's not delivering a canned speech. (He's like Reagan in that regard.)

I'll bet he won't miss any "Celebrations" though... cha-ching!

Well it's just Obama showing the way again, like his proposal on campaign finance. And his opposition to the Iraq war. I bet Hillary will now decide to skip future debates as well. Just wait and see. Obama leads, the rest will follow.

Ahhhhhh,
That's too bad.I was hoping to get more silly platitudes out of Baracky.

Let's review his three strikes! (He's Out!)

1. When the enemy attacks The U.S.A.--- Barack will call, the police and first responders?
2. Barack wants to talk to dictators,with-out pre-conditions,his first year (ha,ha,ha)in office?
3. Barack wants to attack our ally,Pakistan?
How do you spell not ready for the big game? It's spelled --B-A-R-A-C-K-"H"-Obama.
Keep dreaming lefties!

Paulo
P.S. Oh...and he slammed our brave soldiers, like Kerry did!

paulo.. a few things to think about.

1- in the event of an attack, we should make sure first responders are there to keep people safe.

2- pre-conditions haven't helped us negotiate in the current administration

3-Obama never said he would attack Pakistan, he said he would take action to get actionable targets if the quasi-dictatorial gov't of Pakistan does not act. The same thing Mrs Clinton echoed, word-for-word a few hours later.

Which one is the Channel 9 weatherman?

Paulo, you are the typical mouthpiece of hate. You sound like a soundbite from Fox News. How much are they paying you to spin the truth? You are the problem, along with all the politicians and thier bull. In order to make a statement you have to polarize a country, by demeaning half of it's population, in order to voice your opinion on a political candidate you obviously know nothing about.

Liberals are not your enemy. Your fellow countrymen are not your enemy. For some reason you think they are. Change the channel pal. Wake up.

Please, everyone use Paulo's comment as an example of how not to talk about your fellow Americans (aren't you all sick and tired of listening to this hateful crap?) and go get your facts from someplace other than the US news media and politicians. Until you do, we will remain the Divided States of America.

This is a wise decision for the Obama campaign. These forums are more about 30 second sound bites than about real, meaningful, insightful dialogue. He is better at longer, thoughtful responses and Hillary/Bill is better at small talk, short sound bites. When giving longer responses Hillary/Bill manage to find rough spots to get into.

Good. I think this is way too early to hold "debates". The show this morning was more like trying to "bait" the opponents. The debates should be between whomever are the finalists for president be they a democrat, republican, libertarian or independent, and ALL should be included.

GW,

You said it best.

!GOBAMA'08!

Clearly this decision is a direct result of the awful showings that he has had. THey are trying to limit his exposure so he will stop saying things that are so stupid. If you can't win why go?
